[Birdnews]Sad news: Bruce Falls has passed away at age 100

2024-04-30 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
Hello dear birding community,

Bruce Falls has passed away. Such sad news for all who knew him, and a
loss for the birding community. He was instrumental in founding NCC and
Birds Canada. He was the first president of Ontario Nature and the editor
of the first atlas. He was humble and funny and so generous with everyone.

Here is the obit:

[Birdnews] Sad new about Terry Osborne's passing

2021-03-05 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
Dear Ontario Birders:

I am writing to tell you the sad news that Terry Osborne passed away last
Sunday evening.

Terry lived for many years in Erin, then moved to Dundas where he spent
many happy years. Terry was a skilled birder and photographer. He was a
Point Pelee regular, returning every spring for over 30 years. Friends of
Terry will remember his jokes, his friendly smile and his joy in birding.
Terry was always ready to help friends and strangers to find the birds.

Terry had been ill for many months, but this didn't stop him from enjoying
birding from his condo overlooking the Niagara Escarpment, or his regular
postings on Facebook of classic rock and pointed political commentary.

Terry will be greatly missed by his family and all who had the pleasure of
knowing him.

[Birdnews] Announcing OFO's Winter Birding Challenge

2020-11-30 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
After the success of our very first Birding at Home Challenge this
past spring, OFO is excited to announce a new challenge, the Winter
Birding Challenge, running from December 1st to February 28! Get
outside to enjoy the winter; find some great birds; contribute to
community science through eBird; and have a chance to win some great
prizes!

The Winter Birding Challenge will focus on birding your 5MR (5 mile
radius) of your home. How many different species can you find this
winter within your radius? By birding close to home, you can help
reduce your ecological footprint and you will find some new and fun
places to bird.

Watch for announcements on upcoming Webinars that will be both
educational and fun, and get you motivated to bird this winter. We
have lots of great birding tips coming from some of the most
knowledgeable birders in Ontario!

How the Winter Birding Challenge works:

• Anyone interested in birds is welcome to enter the Winter
Birding Challenge - you do not need to be an experienced birder or a
member of OFO to join in the fun

• To participate, go to the challenge page at
http://www.ofo.ca/winterbirding to see the full details and to
register — you will need an eBird account to qualify for prizes

• During the challenge, share your eBird checklists with the OFO
eBird account -- OFObirds

Participants will have a chance to win great prizes including the
grand prize, a pair of binoculars courtesy of Vortex Canada (prizes
will be awarded bi-weekly, grand prizes will be announced March 1st).

[Birdnews] Atlas-3 News: How to get involved and the logo contest

2020-10-16 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
Hello birders,

OFO is proud to be one of the five partner organizations (along with
Birds Ontario, the Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Ontario Nature) for
the third Breeding Bird Atlas of Ontario. We will be posting updates
on the Atlas-3 project on Birdnews from time to time.

How to find out more and get involved

Field work for the atlas begins in 2021, just a few months away. All
birders can contribute by recording observations of breeding birds,
doing point counts, and conducting specialized surveys. If you can ID
a bird, you can contribute, so please sign up!

To find out more and to register, go to the Atlas-3 website at:
https://www.birdsontario.org/

Atlas-3 has its own Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/ONBreedingBirdAtlas (English) or
https://www.facebook.com/AtlasOiseauxON (French). Find the atlas on
Instagram at @ONBirdAtlas or @AtlasOiseauxON, and on Twitter at
@ONBirdAtlas or @AtlasOiseauxON

When posting on social media, please use the hashtag #ONBirdAtlas3 or
#AtlasOiseauxON3.

Logo Contest

The atlas team has prepared five fantastic logos for the atlas, but it
is up to you to vote for your favourite.

Which bird will represent the third Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas?

Could it be the White-throated Sparrow, the Oh-Canada-Canada-Canada
bird? Or the Blackburnian Warbler, flame-throat of the forest? Maybe
you like the hard-to-find but easy to hear Ovenbird? The next two
birds will fly into the Facebook page, Twitter feed and Instagram site
over the next two days, then voting will commence on the Atlas-3
website at https://www.birdsontario.org/

Check out the avian choices on Facebook at:

[Birdnews] OFO Call Notes: OFO AGM, feedback on trips, Certificates of Appreciation Nominations....

2020-08-17 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
Hello all,

Thank you OFO Members for your support and thoughtful feedback about our
decision to cancel in-person field trips until the end of September. Many
of you filled in the survey and we are hearing that the majority are
interested in webinars, self-guided field trips and a fall birding
challenge. We will be working on that.

The survey will remain open until Wednesday at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2ZNTVHX. If you have not already, please
take a couple of minutes to provide your feedback.

*OFO AGM – Monday, September 28th, 7:30 – 8:30 via Zoom*

The OFO Annual General Meeting is normally held during the Convention
banquet. This year, things are a bit different and we will be holding a
virtual AGM via Zoom on Monday, September 28th, from 7:30 – 8:30pm via
Zoom.

The invitation and AGM materials, including Board reports will be sent via
email to members in advance. Please plan to attend.

*Certificates of Appreciation: Call for Nominations Now!*

Each year the OFO recognizes individuals and organizations for their
outstanding contribution to the birds and birding community of Ontario.
This year we will be giving the awards virtually at the AGM. The deadline
for this year’s nominations is *Wednesday, August 19th at 5:00pm*.

*Diversity and Inclusivity Commitment*

We have had a few questions about the status of OFO’s diversity statement.
A group of board members have been working on OFO’s approach and
identifying actions which OFO can take to reduce barriers to birding. The
draft statement will be reviewed at our next board meeting and presented to
members at the AGM. We welcome all opinions and comments on this important
topic.

*Ontario Birds – August Issue*

Most OFO Members will have received their copy of the August issue of
Ontario Birds. The publication will be posted online on our website at:
http://www.ofo.ca/library/list/key/ob this week.

The contents of this issue include:

- Ontario Birds Records Committee Report for 2019

- Feeding niche overlap of grouse species in the Hudson Bay
Lowlands

- Pink-footed Goose: New to Ontario

- Blue Jay spiral flight

- Northern Shrike feeding on suet

- In Memoriam: George K. Peck

Please enjoy reading and learning!

*Documentary Film Project Seeks Birder/birdwatchers to share their stories*

help with a very worthwhile project as follows. If you want to find out
more or if you can help, please get in touch via the email in the
announcement.

[Birdnews] OFO Announcement: August and September In-Person Field Trips Cancelled

2020-08-06 Thread Lynne Freeman via birdnews
*August and September In-Person Field Trips Cancelled*

The OFO Board has made the difficult decision to cancel August and
September field trips because of safety concerns due to the ongoing
COVID-19 situation. Several events have been cancelled in October and
November as well and registrants have been notified. Please check the OFO
website for details.

Weare still hoping that we can go ahead with field trips later in the year,
but will reassess towards the end of September, when schools have been open
for a few weeks and reopening is farther along. In lieu of in-person field
trips, we are working on bringing OFO members and the wider Ontario birding
community virtual field trips and workshops and self-guided outings so we
can all enjoy birding safely.

We would like to hear from OFO members about how we can best support your
birding during this time. Would you go on an organized field trip if these
were offered? Would you be interested in virtual field trips, self-guided
tours, or webinars?

Please help us make the best decisions for our members by completing a
short survey – it will take you less than five minutes. Thank you!
