[Assp-user] assp, the end

2016-06-17 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello all,

Just to let you know that my last assp installation has been put out
of service the other day.

I used to have three rock-solid assp installations.

However, feedback on this list is, at _least_ , selective so I had to
stand down and decommision the mail server along with the last
assp installation I had since the mail server was getting hit badly
and this is a production environment, so we were forced to
outsource the clients' mail services to a third party.

This comes to me not as a surprise since time and again I've asked for
help on assp and very rerely would I get a reply.
This has been going for at least the last four to five years now.

I am not pointing any fingers, nor do I demand any kind of explanation.

I am posting this in good faith and I really am hoping that the people
behind the project can get a bit more helpful with the rest of us.

As an end-note, I would also like to say that I found myself many times
automatically unsubscribed from the list, since there's some function
on it that if you don't acknowledge your subscription, it kicks you out
of the list.
To me this is unacceptable.

Anyway. Keep up the good work. It was great while it lasted.

Wishing a good summer to everyone,

Spyros Tsiolis signing off.

I'm trying to send an email to asspblock (EmailBlockReport) but TB and my

webmail is not allowing me to send without any domain in the recipient
field. I tried also to send asspbl...@assp-notspam.org (assuming
assp-notspam.org is my EmailBlockReportDomain) but it was sending remotely
instead of receiving a reply from assp.

Am I doing it correctly?

Nelson,

Sorry to barge in, but (because I have everthing fresh :-), there is a field
further down
that you are supposed to type the domain name.
So, you need to type the username (asspblock) AND the domain name (domain.com,

whatever our domain is).

On mine I have it setup under the ASSP menu (Block Reporting) if a user
suspects his/her email is caught in the spam filter they can send an email to

blocked for their email address. At this point the user scans the report and
if they find the email in question they can click on the email link to have
it resend. This will also inform ASSP, the email is legit.  I love this
feature for I no longer have to respond to user request to check the spam

Hi, this is pretty cool and it was already configured on my ASSP installation.
I just never took a look at it… RTFM.

Great stuff, and thanks for the hint. Robert

So ASSP works at port 25 and you

Also make sure that ASSP _knows_ of that other port.

 Spyros thank you.

I think I have that OK - I've separated ASSP and Postfix on
 separate
servers, and I think I've got it configured correctly for
 inbound mail.

I thought for whitelisting, when the MTA sent messages out,
 it passed
through the ASSP relay port, and then to another SMTP
 server for
 delivery.  Is that correct?

 Thanks again!

AFAIK (and with a chance of being wrong but don't think so),
yes.
MTA sends outbound mail from port (say) 2525.
ASSP grabs that port (2525) and sends it to the outside world from
port 25.
What it actually does with the messages outbound ?
AFAIK, it puts them to the whitelist.

I'm guessing I need two SMTP servers on the Postfix side:

 1.  To forward to the relay port in ASSP
 2.  To deliver the mail (my ISP doesn't have one, and
 even if they did,
 I would not trust it.)

I think I understand the ASSP configuration, I'm just not
 sure how to

Hi Robert,

I think it's not that complicated.
It doesn't matter what kind of MTA you have.
All you have to do, is make sure that ASSP sits in front
of the MTA.
So ASSP works at port 25 and you check postfix (I don't use

 Hi Folks,
Im looking to see if ASSP can process incomming emails for
multiple domains, and shuffle the clean emails off to thier
appropriate MTA's.  Ive seen a post by another user
saying that they can process your domain for free for any
non-profit.  This leads me to believe that it can be
 done with ASSP.
The incomming portion seems cut and dry.  It's the
delivering the correct emails to the correct MTA that I am a
 little stumped on.

 Is this possible?

 Thanks,

Hi Sam,

AFAIK, yes, it's possible.
I myself, had at some point in time, an installation with three mail

ASSP used to filter out rubbish and let the good messages for their
respective domains pass-through.

[Assp-user] ASSP and Perl v5.08

2010-09-24 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello again,

I installed a testbed for ASSP v1.7.5.7 with a 32-bit CentOS
v5.5 installation. Installed perl v5.08 and updated all the relevant
perl modules as instructed by the assp people.
i startup ASSP v1.7.5.7 go to the stats section and check if everything
is installed properly.
All is good except the first module : Compress:Zlib
Go back to the command line type cpan enter and check to see
if Compress::Zlib is installed. System says it is installed.
Go back to ASSP user interface to check if it installed and it says
it's not installed.

Any ideas ?

TIA,

 Perl 5.8.8

if Compress::Zlib is installed. System says it is
 installed.

Hi Bob,

Yes, I thought as much and went ahead and tried to re-install it.
Keeps saying that Compress::Zlib is already installed in its latest
version.

I did install blah::blah. Thanks for the idea though.
I'll check the manual pages for cpan instructions and see if
there's a force reinstall or uninstall it then install
it again or something like that.

Thank you kindly ,

Not quite. From what it seems, some messages from the outside
world get marked as MessageOK and don't enter the notspam
list and some of them (checked it again just now), they enter
the notspam list.

Here's a couple of examples :

Sep-08-10 08:21:57 23316-08623 [MessageOK] 83.235.67.30
newslet...@voyager-shop.gr to: spy...@abaxb2b.gr -- Message OK -- [VOYAGER
NEWSLETTER] - okmail/VOYAGER_NEWSLETTER__9.eml;

the last part of the above example is in green (VOYAGER_*.eml;)

Well, at the moment I cannot find the example where the e-mail
was not marked. Could I be wrong ? I could swear this happened!
Oh well, I am trying to find this example on the log files and
I cannot find anything.
I could be wrong. I don't know.

Thank you anyway,

Regards,

s.

Or do I have to perform a separate action to accomplish

If by that, you mean marking false positives (false positive
being a message that is marked as spam when it is ham), then
I have exactly the same question. There is a list that I
cannot understand.
Could someone plase explain the available options.
Available options on assp v1.7.5.7 :

. resend file (what it says I imagine)
. save file (what is says again)
. copy file to notspamlog (?)
. copy file to spamlog (?)
. copy file to viruslog (?)
. copy file to correctedspam (?)
. copy file to correctednotspam (?)

[Assp-user] MessageOK when it should be marked as notspam

2010-09-06 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello people,

Upgraded assp from v1.7.1.1 to v1.7.5.1.
After a long long time, finally, spam and notspam is coloured
red and green in the maillog tail and I am quite happy about this.
However, I noticed that legitimate message from the outside world
are marked as MessageOK and not notspam.

This is not helpfull, since I would like to have those messages
marked as notspam and have them listed in the /usr/local/assp/notspam/
folder.

Choices are so many nowadays I can't be bothered to check them one by
one.

Could anyone share some light on this ?

Thank you kindly,

spyros

Doug Hi,

Sorry, I don't understand. What seems to be the problem ?
You say you receive a message with around 100 pages of job
numbers; What job numbers ? How much in Kb (Mb) is 100 pages
of job numbers.
Could you be a bit more specific on this ? I am interested because
I am about to upgrade two (2) mail servers from v1.7.1.1 to the
current version.

Thanks in advance,

Is your ASSP (and probably your mailserver) behind a DMZ ?
If yes, does your firewall allow your ASSP machine to

 Just my thoughts,

The machine can definitely access port 80, as I said I can
download via wget.  Also, the network configuration
hasn't changed since I was able to update originally.

What is the address ASSP should be accessing?

from what you describe, look like ASSP itself is trying to find a file
that is simply not there.

Don't know what to tell you.
Have you tried to wget something from that same machine to the outside
world ? Something that you know for sure that exists out there ?
Have you checked this with fritz ?

outside port 80 ?

Just my thoughts,

[Assp-user] perl-5.10 on CentOS 5.4 ?

2010-04-18 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello list,

Has anyone managed to upgrade perl v5.08 to v5.10 on a
CentOS installation ?
The latest CentOS 5.4 has Perl v5.08. Not very helpfull when
it comes to building/installing the latest ASSP version.

Would anyone have any idea how to build from SRPMS (maybe) a
fedora or redhat perl-5.10 for CentOS ?

I tried a couple of things, but it didn't work.

TIA,

s.

[Assp-user] Fw: Fw: How to tell assp about a false-positive ?

2010-04-01 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
I've asked this before. However, I don't remember the
answer to this.
So, here goes,

Assp has (mistakenly) marked a message that is spam to be
legit.
Is there a  way to inform the mechanism that it
deducted wrongly
from the interface ?

E.G. on the maillog list, if you click on the actualy
message
(its serial number that is), a window pops-up and you have
the
following choices :

. resend file
. save file
. copy file to notspamlog
. copy file to incomingOKMail
. copy file to viruslog
. copy file to correctedspam
. copy file to correctednotspam

Now, I would think (with my limited knowledge) that the
choice
would be copy file to notspamlog.
However, if you check the other options, they are quite
similar;
 Namely :

copy file to incomingOKMail
copy file to correctednotspam

Does anyone know which of the options is valid for a
false-positive
to be corrected ?

Thank you kindly ,

Spyros

Re: [Assp-user] ClamAV issues

2010-03-11 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hi Paul,

Just what I suspected yesterday.

Do you need to have the actual ClamAV running on the linux box to
install it as a Perl module ?

Because if this is true, I haven't installed it !
Duh!

I googled around yesterday. I got rid of the perl module living
inside my hard drive (I don't remember exactly what I did, I've
found a HOWTO somewhere, now I lost the hyperlink) and I suspect
that before I should install it as a perl module, I need to install
it as an executable.

Please advise and many thanks,

spyros

That looks like what you get if
you've tried to install more than once in a
cpan session and it has errored both times.  The
second time you just get a
generic message.  We'd need the full original
 message.  Exit cpan, do:

 Rm -rf /root/.cpan/build/File-Scan-ClamAV-1.91*

Then open cpan and run install File::Scan::ClamAV.
 Send what that says.
Also, from the command line,  type clamd -V and let
 me know what it says.

Usually it won't make if it cannot find the clamd.conf (and
 maybe
freshclam.conf?) where ever it is looking, which indicates
 clamav isn't
installed.  I believe the default clam install
 location and where the module
looks is /usr/local/etc.  You do have clam installed
 right?

Hi Dex,

Thanks a lot man.

Yum is for CentOS installations. I am getting there (get all my
servers to be of one flavour) but I'm not quite there yet.

I am using Slackware Linux v12.0 at the moment for this specific
ASSP server.

I will definitely keep all the scripts that you've so willfully
attached and try to make them work for my installation.

Again, Thank You !

 Hi,

i have used yum to install clamav clamvd clamav-update
 clamav-lib
 clamav-scanner clamav-scanner-sysvinit
 clamav-scanner-upstart
 clamav-server-sysvinit clamtk
so this shld take care of clamav.

yes you need clamav-server to get clamd and clamd.conf (i
 found this after
 few hours of headscratching)

Then make sure you edit /etc/freshclam.conf (remove the
 EXAMPLE line), do
 the same for /etc/clamd.conf

 for some reason i didnt have a clamd.conf, so i vim'd my
 own:

 ___
 #/etc/clamd.conf
 LogFile /var/log/clamd.log
 TemporaryDirectory /var/tmp
 DatabaseDirectory /var/lib/clamav
 LogFileMaxSize 1M
 LogTime yes
 LogSyslog yes
 PidFile /var/run/clamav/clam.pid
 LocalSocket /tmp/clamd.socket
 FixStaleSocket yes
 MaxConnectionQueueLength 15
 ReadTimeout 120
 SelfCheck 3600
 User clamscan
 AllowSupplementaryGroups yes
 DetectBrokenExecutables yes
 ScanMail yes
 ScanHTML yes
 ScanArchive no
 ArchiveBlockEncrypted no
 _
make sure you have clamavupdate user wihch shld match the
 permissions on the
 log folder.

if it gives error check file permission to match the one
 in  /etc/passwd
 #cat /etc/passwd |grep clam*

 then you can do :
 #freshclam (to update)
#/usr/bin/clamconf (to check your configuration and locate
 errors)
 #/usr/bin/clamscan (to scan)

once this is done, perl module File::Scan::ClamAV can be
 manually compiled
 #perl MAKEFILE.pl
 #make make install

 ULR's i have used:
 http://sial.org/howto/clamav/freshclam/

 http://www.howtoforge.com/assp_clamav_postfix_debian_etch_p2

 hope that helps

When all that works and clamd is running, start ASSP
 and configure it to
  use ClamAV.

  Good luck.

Turn on uniqeIDLogging so you can
easily find all entries related to a
 certain mail.

That aside, unless Fritz released a sub update/fix for
 1.6.5, there is a bug
in it that in some rare cases causes the whitelist to be
 ignored.  Not sure
what else.  1.7 seems to be perfectly stable and
 functioning correctly.  I
recommend upgrading and see how that fairs.

As for the how I think you'd better follow the

[Assp-user] ClamAV issues

2010-03-10 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Just FYI,

In case someone has any ideas, that is :

--
Going to write /root/.cpan/Metadata
Running install for module 'File::Scan::ClamAV'
Running make for J/JA/JAMTUR/File-Scan-ClamAV-1.91.tar.gz
Has already been unwrapped into directory
/root/.cpan/build/File-Scan-ClamAV-1.91-F42Phv
  '/usr/bin/perl5.10.0 Makefile.PL' returned status 512, won't make
Running make test
Make had some problems, won't test
Running make install
Make had some problems, won't install
--

And that's pretty much it. It doesn't do anything.

I would like to thank all the kind people who rushed to help me on
this.

Best Regards to everyone,

Re: [Assp-user] Found the offending message

2010-03-10 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello Scott,

 Hi Spryros,
If you are not seeing in in your logs, perhaps you can also
grep the files themselves, that is what I mean, I may not
 have been clear.

No, you have been very clear. I understand what you say.

ASSP is saving copies of the emails, or parts of them at
least, you should be able to apply the same prep command to
the directory in which the emails are.  I forget what
it is called, but for example:

 sudo grep -irH '50345' /path/to/ASSP/emails

Yeah. I got it. Grep has many uses. I will also have to consult
the manual pages for more.

That will find any file whose contents has 50345 in it.

If you are looking to search the file names for a mach, use
 find:
sudo find /path/to/ASSP/emails -name *50345* -print

The wildcard patterns on the beginning and end should make
the find command do a contains search on the filename.

yeah . got it. No worries. . .

I am not a fan at all of the auto updating in ASSP, if
yours is doing so, I would disable it.  The best I can
suggest is to go back to your last working version, if you
 can find it.

AFAIK, I always download and install _only_ the _stable_ versions.
But then, further down on your message you say :

My best advice, find a stable version, and stay with it,
email servers that are not broken, are not to be
fixed.  You are very concerned about an issue, but I
also believe you are running beta software, which I would
never recommend on a production email server.

I really did not know I was running beta software.
From what I understand, stuff under this hyperlink :

http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/assp

Is stable stuff, not beta. However, it seems (from what you say) I am
wrong. To tell you the truth, I am very confused with the versioning
system on ASSP. However, all I can do is upgrade and hope for the best.
But I do keep backups and backups of backups :-)

You could test your version since you are just looking for
a subject match, to paste into the analyzer, take any email,
alter the subject to what you want it to be, and paste it
 into ASSP's mail analyzer.

That is what I was planning to do. As long as I can find the actual
file in some directory. If you followed the whole story on this, ASSP
just marked it as safe and didn't say what (serial) number it gave the
message/file and where it saved it.

Thank you very very much for your kind reply,

Spyros

[Assp-user] ASSP passes spam message as legit and some crash issues . . .

2010-03-09 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello,

Thought you people would like to know about the following :

The other day an exec downloaded a message pretending to be from UPS,
informing him that if he does not answer the message, a package he is
waiting will get lost.

Anyway, the exec opened the message. Inside the message was a Trojan.
A very nasty one : XP Antivirus Professional claimed that is was.
Naturally, it was nothing else than a very - VERY nasty trojan.

I tried to take it away, but I had to re-install (about 40Gb of data to
be backed-up plus 3,5Gb of a .pst file for outlook 2007).

After spending one day of re-installing, I thought I should go to the ASSP
interface and have a look why, WHY did it let that specific
message get through.

The incident took place on either the 4th of the 5th of March, so I tried
to access the logs back to that date. I couldn't (!?)

The logs will go back to the 8th of March. Watching the logs, I realized
that tens of messages have to tried to pass this UPS subject line to
various users inside the network, but all got (correctly) marked as
SP*M. So I still tried to access the 4/3 and 5/3 to find the message and
pass it through the mail analyzer.

The only thing I managed to do (here comes the description for the crash
incident), is instruct the system to check all the log files. Then ASSP
crashed and its process stopped functioning.

I would really appreciate if someone could shed some light on this.
I really have to hunt this down and resolve it. If everytime this happens
(users are no clever people, I have established that since ages ago),
, I will end-up wasting my time doing re-installations of windows
XP around the offices.

Some data :

ASSP v1.6.5.4(1.0.0.4)

Any help would be appreciated,

TIA,

Hi GrayHat,

No, not ClamAV.
I tried to install it but it's not in the official CPAN repos, so
I avoided installing it.

Here's the complete list of the perl modules :

Compress::Zlib  2.021
Digest::MD5 2.39
Digest::SHA12.12
Email::Valid0.182
Email::Send 2.198
Email::MIME::Modifier   1.903
File::ReadBackwards 1.04

File::Scan::ClamAV (not installed)
IO::Socket::INET6  (not installed)
IO::Socket::SSL(not installed, not enabled in the interface)

LWP::Simple 5.827
Mail::SPF   2.007
Mail::SRS   0.31
Net::CIDR::Lite
Net::DNS0.65
Net::SMTP   2.31
Net::IP::Match::Regexp  1.01
Net::LDAP   0.39
Net::SenderBase 1.01
Sys::Syslog 0.27
Net::Syslog
Tie::RDBM   0.70

That's pretty much it.

I'll try it with grep. Eventhough, when something is advertised as
working, it should work.

Anyway.

Thank you again,

s.

[Assp-user] more alarming issues with ASSP

2010-03-09 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
What the heck is going on,I really don't know.

In regards to my previous message, I went ahead and checked by text

Here' s what I've found :

Mar-02-10 21:12:03 [MessageOK] 83.218.67.228 eccentricall...@itweetu.com to:

--

No spam or notspam. Nothing. Message is _NOT_ registered anywhere
in the logfile. Just message ok and passing it. Not giving any place
where I could find this message or a message/assp serial number.

Does anyone know what is going on here ?

This is suspicious and I feel threatened by it, since I don't know
how to defend for this.

TIA,

[Assp-user] Found the offending message

2010-03-09 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Well,
After a bit of searching, i've found the offending message :

Mar-04-10 10:10:37 [MessageOK] 93.93.184.190 boldestfy...@cmarealtygroup.com
to: clients'@domain.gr -- Message OK --  [UPS Delivery Problem NR 50345];

Again, this message is marked as notspam (Message OK), but it doesn't
assign an assp serial number and put it in the notspam folder.

What is going on ?

How am I supposed to find it, pass it through the mail analyser and correct
the false-negative if I don't know where the message lies ?
HOW CAN I STOP THIS NIGHTMARE ?
Day-by-day I risk the chance of people infecting their machines with this.

TIA,

2010-02-17 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
From what was discussed a coupld of months ago
(taken from my personal documentation) :

Upgrading ASSP – the easy way
-

The procedure for upgrading an existing assp installation is easy :

· The admin has to make sure he/she has a backup of the OLD installation
(e.g. assp_v1.5.1.1_BACKUP or something in those terms)
· Then the admin must uncompress the new version (e.g. assp_v1.5.1.2)
· He/she must copy the assp.pl, rebuildspamdb.pl and mod_inst.pl from the
newly created assp version folder to the existing assp version underneath the
assp root folder (/usr/local/assp)
· Copy the images folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the reports folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the certs folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the docs folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the notes folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy from the new assp files folder to the existing assp files folder
the following :

invalidptr.txt
[blackre.txt]
URIBLCCTLDS.txt
nodelay.txt
redre.txt
ipnp.txt
blockreportuser.txt
validptr.txt
bombre.txt
whiteorg.txt
strictspf.txt
invalidhelo.txt

denyalways.txt : This file should be cleared of any entries

NOTE files in brackets denotes older ASSP version files laying around;
These files are most probably
obsoleted, but in good practice, left untouched

ATTENTION

· After the successful upgrade of the assp folder, the admin has to set
to disabled the following options :

On IpBlocking ΰ Do Also Deny Connections from these IP’s (DoDropList) – Set to
disabled
On IpBlocking ΰ Do Deny Connections from these IP’s (DoDenySMTP) – Set to
disabled
On IpBlocking ΰ Do Deny Connections from these IP’s Strictly (DoDenySMTPStrict)
– set to disabled

· Also the admin has to check ValidateHelo ΰ invalidFormatHeloRe:
file:files/invalidhelo.txt

 Hi,
I'm planning to upgrade assp from 1.5.1.3 to 1.6.5.5.. Do I
 need only to
replace assp.pl file ? Are there any issues I need to be
 aware of?
 Please advice,
 Thanks

Re: [Assp-user] assp and mta in one machine

2010-01-27 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hi Nelson,

Yes, AFAIK, you can do this. I am using a different MTA, but the
result is the same.

You setup ASSP in front of it (configure ASSP to listen to port 25),
then you set your MTA to another port (say, 2525).
ASSP listens to everything coming in from the big bad world, sorts it
out, then forwards the good messages to port 2525 (your real MTA
port). Just read the docs for your specific MTA. There must a switch
allowing you to start SMTP service on a port different than the
(25) default.

That's pretty much it !

I've setup assp long time ago but
after 5 months of using it, it was
replace by our own antispam software. It was working fine
 but it was
replace due to customization. Now, I'll be deploying it
 again but this
time, it will be permanent and be deployed to our client
 (not ours).

However, I set it up before and the format was:

Internet -- Assp Server (public mx) -- Core mail
 (qmail)

          port 25

                 port
 25

          proxy pop/imap

       real pop/imap

Now, my question is can I install Assp and qmail in one
 machine. I'll
set qmail to listen to port 3600 and configure assp to
 forward mails to
localhost port 3600. Is that possible? Which means the
 setup will be
 like this

 Internet -- Assp/qmail (public mx)

          port 25 (assp), port
 3600 (qmail and will also
used by for sending), port 110/143

This machine will probably handle not more than 50 emails.
 Would you
advise this setup for a small/medium company?

Sorry for asking this since I've already reformatted the
 machine with
assp and could not verify if its possible.

System is an Intel Celeron @2,8GHz with 2Gb or RAM.

ASSP was v1.5.1.8 and got upgraded to v1.5.6.1.

After that, in order to view anything on localhost:5 is too slow.

Any ideas ?

Re: [Assp-user] Comcast screws with outbound mail

2009-07-01 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

AFAIK, all ISPs' treat business clients like they are kids
playing games on the internet; In other words, _never_ inform them
in case they make changes to their IT infrastructure.

.s

When I did the dig -x command, they have two entries for
 us, one is
 misspelled.

Its typical of Comcast to NOT tell their business clients
 of network-wide
 changes

like how 1/2 the mid-atlantic service area is down today
 etc.

time for a new MTA too...

Re: [Assp-user] Comcast screws with outbound mail

2009-06-30 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hi,

I have the same issue.
You can solve this easily.
AFAIK, there is a section on ASSP and all you have to do is
put the FQDN name in there.
Let me check . . .

Yes, AFAIK, two things :

1) On the ASSP web interface :
Server Setup -- My Name (MyName), write down the FQDN of your
   mailserver

2) Make sure that your ISP knows there is an MX record for your
Ip address on the outside (don't know if you have a firewall or
not; most probably, you have) and that also does reverse DNS for
   the IP.

This is a bit tricky; Some ISPs' do it fine and it works and some
others don't.

OPTIONAL : (Don't know if it makes a difference, I think I does)
Make sure you have the FQDN registered under /etc/hosts and also
the gateways FQDN and aliases. That's for Unix. If you have windows,
I think it's on C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc.
Also, make sure you do proper DNS lookup on the inside of you network.

Now I cant point my MTA to ASSP anymore for outgoing.
I have to point it straight to the outbound router IP for
 outgoing mail to
 be accepted.
They started requiring a reverse DNS record this morning.
Guess what, they never setup a RDNS MX for me...until
 today.
But now that its active, I lose the ability to auto-add to
 whitelist through
 ASSP.

ASSP Relaying settings have not changed AT ALL.
Seems whatever Comcast is using for mail filtering doesnt
 like ASSP relaying
 stuff out.
 ASSP 1.4.3.1.1
 relayhost:smtp.comcast.net
 relayport: 25

mta points outgoing to ASSP IP
ASSP has dual NICs: Public and Private
 IPTables doing the routing.

[Assp-user] v1.5.1.2 to v1.5.1.3

2009-06-19 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello again people,

I would like to upgrade from v1.5.1.2 to
v1.5.1.3. Is it the same Drill ? :

[from my documentation]
--
· The admin has to make sure he/she has a backup of the OLD installation
(e.g. assp_v1.5.1.1_BACKUP or something in those terms)
· Then the admin must uncompress the new version (e.g. assp_v1.5.1.2)
· He/she must copy the assp.pl and rebuildspamdb.pl from the newly
created assp version folder to the existing assp version underneath the assp
root folder (/usr/local/assp)
· Copy the images folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the reports folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the certs folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the docs folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy the notes folder to the existing assp folder
· Copy from the new assp files folder to the existing assp files folder
the following :

invalidptr.txt
blackre.txt
URIBLCCTLDS.txt
nodelay.txt
redre.txt
ipnp.txt
blockreportuser.txt
validptr.txt
bombre.txt
whiteorg.txt
denyalways.txt
strictspf.txt
invalidhelo.txt

ATTENTION

· After the successful upgrade of the assp folder, the admin has to set
to disabled the following options :

On IpBlocking - Do Also Deny Connections from these IP’s (DoDropList) – Set to
disabled
On IpBlocking - Do Deny Connections from these IP’s (DoDenySMTP) – Set to
disabled
On IpBlocking - Do Deny Connections from these IP’s Strictly (DoDenySMTPStrict)
– set to disabled

· Also the admin has to check ValidateHelo - invalidFormatHeloRe:
file:files/invalidhelo.txt

[end documentation]

TIA,

s.

Hello,

I am sorry, I don't understand this option; You are referring to :

Copy Spam SMTP Destination (sendAllDestination)

As usual, it doesn't make any sense.

All I want to do is have a mail account inside the LAN (like

rubbish). This is because, sometimes, we get false-positives
for legitimate messages and a company employee will frequently
check that account for any false-positives.

Thank you anyway,

I think you might be confusing the
terms...if you want the account to be on
the same e-mail server you're using then set up an e-mail
 address for it and
use sendallspam. In your original message you wanted to
 send to a 'specific
machine' which to my understanding would be another
 computer on your lan.

Re: [Assp-user] How do you get into the forums?

2009-06-10 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

OK, this is it.

I _demand_ (this time round) any of the developers to come forward
and authoritatively state what is the status of this list.

I have too much work to do and not much time to fool around either
with Fritz or with anyone else.
I DO NOT - REPEAT : DO NOT WANT TO USE WEB-BASED FORAE. I've had
enough with all this and want to do my job by mailing list.

If you, people think we are human fodder, just say so and we can
get on with our business as usual (and off your list).

In the mean time, either Fritz (can you hear me Sir ? I am writing
this and it is addressed to you Sir !) or anyone else from this
project come forward and state the status of the project.
Are we allowed to post to this list ? Will our answers be met with the
appropriate seriousness such a project _demands_ ? OR are we playing
around with perl and other toys ?

If this list is no longer functional and opted to answer our questions,
then I WILL :

1. Report this to sourceforge and the open source community
if they don't do anything, I will :

2. Stop using this piece of software however good it is.

3. Go to commercial product and do my job.

4. Advertise to anyone I can the way people are treated when they
ask questions.

I can do this (and then some) with far superior products for the
_minimum_ cost.

Either treat us like you're supposed to, or (at least I, for one)
am off this list and stop using this product,

Enough is _indeed_ enough.

Re: [Assp-user] How do you get into the forums?

2009-06-04 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hi Matti,

No, your english is just fine. What I am saying here is that
I post messages in this list for critical answers to make my
production system work properly and out of the blue, I discover
that no-one from the development team (one of the gurus) is going
to answer them, unless my questions are answered by someone like you.

I find that a little discomforting, since I am not playing with
clients installations.

I've asked things here time and again and got no answers.
I do _not_ _demand_ answers, but why do we bother writing here
if no-one answers our technical queries.

That's what I am getting at.
I am sorry but I, too, have problems expressing what I think in words,
even in my native language. That, most of the times, gets me in really
bad situations, trying to explain myself.

HTH,

Regards,

spyros

--

And for another sender from the same domain :

senderaddr...@domain.address.gr to:
   receipient.addr...@some.other.address.gr MESSAGE OK [DEP TC
AG 25 5 2009];
--

the first user was trying to send some .gif-created postcards.
I've told them not to send images through e-mail, just plain text
 but no one listens.

What to do now ?

Questions :
1. How do I tell assp (v1.5.1.2 running on slackware linux v12.2) to
stop blocking the image e-mails and

2. Jest let it allow everything from that domain

Any help would be appreciated (as always :-)

TIA,

OK, someone mentioned the other day that in order to properly install

Is it a win32 app or a linux app. Does anyone know ?

Net::LDAP
Net::SenderBase
Tie::RDBM

There are also :

File::SCAN::ClamAV
IO::Socket::INET6

but I am not very keen on using those.

 From the shell run cpan.
Once at the 'cpan' console type install force
modualname.  For example install force Net::LDAP

That is case sensitive.  It will download the module
 via FTP then compile
 and install it.

[Assp-user] ASSP v1.5.1.2 from scratch. Questions.

2009-05-14 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello people,

Would anyone have any idea on how to start with a _fresh_ installation
of ASSP v1.5.1.2 ?

E.g. How to collect spam and ham messages ?
I am interested _only_ on the bayesian method of sorting messages.

I remember someone telling me I don't have to collect assorted messages
but I can do it straight away.

Back in the old (v1.2.6) days, I used to collect hundreds of messages
and sort them by hand.

Should I stick to the install.txt file ?

TIA,
s.

Re: [Assp-user] Error in assp.pl at line 23574

2009-05-08 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Strange,

I have two (2) boxes running v1.5.1.2. I didn't have such a problem.
Naturally, something got corrupted the other day on one of the servers.
I, too, had an error on line something like 22*** (can't remember now;
it's ancient history for me), but I didn't pay much attention.
Just upgraded to v1.5.1.2 again and got hold of the spam and notspam
folders and didn't get the assp.pl and rebuildspamdb.pl files from
the seperate repository (outside the .zip-file that is).

Just my thoughts ,

I'm gonna have to disagree to you.  Fritz's reply was
 simply to the

 If Spyros had been
backing up his server, he would have simply been able to
 restore the
ASSP folder and been on his way.

Anyways, I don't think the assp mailing list is the first
 place he
should be looking for help since something obviously got
 corrupted on
his hard drive and how are we to troubleshoot that?
 If that is not the
case, then Spyros should have explained better and not
 started the topic

Seeing as you had a power outage, I would assume that
 you're implying
that your server lost power.  If everything was
 working prior to the
power outage, what should be your first step in the
 recovery process?
Well, mine (upon discovery that something wasn't working as
 it should)
would have been to run a chkdsk (since mine runs on
 Windows) to clean up
any hard disk corruption.  If it still isn't working,
 then I would have
renamed the ASSP folder to assp.old and tried to start from
 a fresh
install copying necessary components from the assp.old dir
 (all assuming
I didn't have a backup, which I do).  You may even
 have a problem with
 your perl folder.

Just so you know I'm not being mean/argumentative, just
 frank, I'll add
 a nice smiley face :-).

Re: [Assp-user] Problem with assp after power outage

2009-05-02 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Fritz,

It _looks_like_ it doesn't like the assp.pl and rebuildspamdb.pl
files that reside _outside_ the assp zipfile.

I did an upgrade with those files living inside the zip file and it worked.
It complained ofcourse about droplist.txt :

May-2-09 14:43:21 AdminInfo: failed to open option list file for reading
./files/droplist.txt' (DropList): No such file or directory

but i suspect that this is an option found in the newest assp.pl file.

HTH and any opinions are welcome.

[Assp-user] Some perl modules do not install

2009-04-22 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello again list,

OK, just upgraded one of the three mail installations to assp
v1.5.1.2. Looks like it worked fine.

New choice. Don't know what it does. I'll figure it out at some
point (maybe).

OK, here's my problem. I have some perl modules that do not get
installed from the cpan prompt. Here are the modules :

1) File::Scan::ClamAV - not very interested but still curious as
to why it doesn't install itself

2) Net::LDAP - do I need to install the LDAP related packages on
   my slackware 12.2 installation ?

3) Tie::RDBM - do I need to install MySQL first in order to make
this module available under Perl ?

4) Net::Senderbase - Have no idea what it does but it looks
as if its needed. Doesn't install though.

and

5) IO::Socket::INET6 - Again, could it be that I've disabled INET6
support on my slackware 12.2 installation ?

Any help would be appreciated,

Regards,

spyros

 depending on
how long I go between process restarts (average 1200

do you need to have at least 2GB of RAM (notice I used GB

Maybe in time. But for now. I don't get it _at all_ .

Thank you for your interest,

[Assp-user] Sorted Config ?

2009-04-15 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello again,

For v1.5.1.1 on one machine there is a column on the left hand side of
the browser (when accessing the assp interface naturally) that says
Sorted Config. It is a vertical little column on the left and when
the user does a mouse-over the column expands to the right with all
the available (I think) options from assp.

On the other hand, on the other assp upgrade I did, there is no such
thing.

Does anyone know what this is ?

TIA,
s.

Nice !

Also, don't try assp v1.5.1.1 without having at _least_ 2Gb of RAM.
It's torture ! :-)

(and yes, yes, I am waiting for the RAM modules to arrive :-)

 It is a sorted index.
You can reach it by clicking in the top of the menu on
 sorted.
To hide/show the panel there is  an option in
 section Server Setup:

Hide the Alpha Index Menu Panel in GUI ( hideAlphaIndex)
Removes the alphanumeric index panel on the left side in
 the GUI, but
the index is accessable by clicking on sorted.

[Assp-user] v1.4.3.1 to v1.5.1.1 and then some. . .

2009-04-14 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello list,

First of all, I would like to thank all the people who helped me
on the upgrade issue. I did _not_ know there was an install.txt file.
Reading that file, I found out how silly of me it was to keep asking the
same questiong.
However, the alzheimer has, indeed, advanced ( ;-) and I have to say
that I almost LOST my v1.4.3.1 assp folder due to the fact that I
was careless. What happened ? I hear you asking. . . Well, I had two
directories installed on my mail server : one was called assp_v1.4.3.1
(the old sources upgrade directory, let's call it. . .) and the other
was the actuall assp folder. I wanted to do some housekeeping and I
thought convenient to start deleting the ACTUALL WORKING folder !
So, what happened? I hear you ask again. I managed to recover the
essentials :
spam was still untouched
notspam was still untouched
and upgraded to v1.5.1.1 and got assp.cfg (which was gone, sorry to
say) from the old mailserver box that was still laying around waiting
to be written-off.

Anyway, all went fine (as far as I can tell).

Here's a question for you kind people:
Eventhough I checked all the relevant perl modules, _before_ I started
upgagrading from v1.4.3.1 to v1.5.1.1 (oooh ! that's surprising! :-),
I checked the ASSP information and statistics page to find out that
some of them are missing. More specifically :

Email::Send - sending .eml files is not available
IO::Socket::INET6 - IPv6 support not available
IO::Socket::SSL - SSL support disabled
Text::Iconv - kyrillic charset converter not available
Net::SenderBase - countrycode checks not available
Tie::RDBM - mysql usage not available

also , not available is the clam module :

File::Scan::ClamAV - not installed

If I try to install it, it says
Running make test
Make had some problems, won't test
Running make install
Make had some problems, won't install

Anyway, I am not interested so in ClamAV as I am interested
in the rest of the modules.

Any ideas people ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running Slackware Linux v12.2.0 with 2Gb of RAM (DDR2),
a Core Duo @2,6GHz on an Asus motherboard with an IDE/ATAPI
Hitachi 80Gb HDD.

TIA,

spyros

[Assp-user] HUGE problem on v1.5.1.1 upgrade

2009-04-14 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Hello people,

My worst nightmare has come true.
After upgrading to a clients' place and being sure that everything is
ok, I went ahead and upgraded to another clients' site _without_ grubbing
backups from the mail server.

It looks like I have a problem now. And it is big.

Here's the output of the log tail :

--
Apr-14-09 13:03:07 192.168.0.14:1244 strictly denied by denySMTPConnections or
droplist: 192.168.0.0/16
--

And here's the output of one of the workstations running outlook
2000 sp3 english :

--
The TCP/IP connection was unexpectetly terminated by the server.
Server response : '554 server.fqdn service denied. Closing
transmission channel. Account: 'server.fqdn',SMTP server 192.168.1.4
error number : 0x800cc0f
---

It's ass-whooping time for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not understand what they do from the description

Simply put, the DoDenySMTP means that, if an email coming
 from
one of the listed IPs isn't from a whitelisted sender or in
 any case has
no special exception, then it will be refused, on the
 other hand the
DoDenySMTPstrict means that NO exception will take place,
 any
connection from one of those IPs will be directly REJECTED
 and the
purpose for both should (I hope) be pretty clear

· Copy all the contents of the new assp version images folder to the
existing images folder
· Copy all the contents of the new assp version files folder to the
existing files folder
The file list for the files folder :

invalidptr.txt
URIBLCCTLDS.txt
nodelay.txt
redre.txt
ipnp.txt
bombre.txt

Please advise !

I am also upgrading the RAM from 512Mb to 2Gb.
