[Assp-user] assp, the end
Hello all, Just to let you know that my last assp installation has been put out of service the other day. I used to have three rock-solid assp installations. However, feedback on this list is, at _least_ , selective so I had to stand down and decommision the mail server along with the last assp installation I had since the mail server was getting hit badly and this is a production environment, so we were forced to outsource the clients' mail services to a third party. This comes to me not as a surprise since time and again I've asked for help on assp and very rerely would I get a reply. This has been going for at least the last four to five years now. I am not pointing any fingers, nor do I demand any kind of explanation. I am posting this in good faith and I really am hoping that the people behind the project can get a bit more helpful with the rest of us. As an end-note, I would also like to say that I found myself many times automatically unsubscribed from the list, since there's some function on it that if you don't acknowledge your subscription, it kicks you out of the list. To me this is unacceptable. Anyway. Keep up the good work. It was great while it lasted. Wishing a good summer to everyone, Spyros Tsiolis signing off. -- What NetFlow Analyzer can do for you? [Assp-user] MessageOK when it should be marked as notspam
Hello people, Upgraded assp from v1.7.1.1 to v1.7.5.1. After a long long time, finally, spam and notspam is coloured red and green in the maillog tail and I am quite happy about this. However, I noticed that legitimate message from the outside world are marked as MessageOK and not notspam. This is not helpfull, since I would like to have those messages marked as notspam and have them listed in the /usr/local/assp/notspam/ folder. Choices are so many nowadays I can't be bothered to check them one by one. Could anyone share some light on this ? Re: [Assp-user] Found the offending message
Hello Scott, Hi Spryros, If you are not seeing in in your logs, perhaps you can also grep the files themselves, that is what I mean, I may not have been clear. No, you have been very clear. I understand what you say. ASSP is saving copies of the emails, or parts of them at least, you should be able to apply the same prep command to the directory in which the emails are. I forget what it is called, but for example: sudo grep -irH '50345' /path/to/ASSP/emails Yeah. I got it. Grep has many uses. I will also have to consult the manual pages for more. That will find any file whose contents has 50345 in it. If you are looking to search the file names for a mach, use find: sudo find /path/to/ASSP/emails -name *50345* -print The wildcard patterns on the beginning and end should make the find command do a contains search on the filename. yeah . got it. No worries. . . I am not a fan at all of the auto updating in ASSP, if yours is doing so, I would disable it. The best I can suggest is to go back to your last working version, if you can find it. AFAIK, I always download and install _only_ the _stable_ versions. But then, further down on your message you say : My best advice, find a stable version, and stay with it, email servers that are not broken, are not to be fixed. You are very concerned about an issue, but I also believe you are running beta software, which I would never recommend on a production email server. I really did not know I was running beta software. From what I understand, stuff under this hyperlink : http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/assp Is stable stuff, not beta. However, it seems (from what you say) I am wrong. To tell you the truth, I am very confused with the versioning system on ASSP. However, all I can do is upgrade and hope for the best. But I do keep backups and backups of backups :-) You could test your version since you are just looking for a subject match, to paste into the analyzer, take any email, alter the subject to what you want it to be, and paste it into ASSP's mail analyzer. That is what I was planning to do. As long as I can find the actual file in some directory. If you followed the whole story on this, ASSP just marked it as safe and didn't say what (serial) number it gave the message/file and where it saved it. [Assp-user] ASSP passes spam message as legit and some crash issues . . .
Hello, Thought you people would like to know about the following : The other day an exec downloaded a message pretending to be from UPS, informing him that if he does not answer the message, a package he is waiting will get lost. Anyway, the exec opened the message. Inside the message was a Trojan. A very nasty one : XP Antivirus Professional claimed that is was. Naturally, it was nothing else than a very - VERY nasty trojan. I tried to take it away, but I had to re-install (about 40Gb of data to be backed-up plus 3,5Gb of a .pst file for outlook 2007). After spending one day of re-installing, I thought I should go to the ASSP interface and have a look why, WHY did it let that specific message get through. The incident took place on either the 4th of the 5th of March, so I tried to access the logs back to that date. I couldn't (!?) The logs will go back to the 8th of March. Watching the logs, I realized that tens of messages have to tried to pass this UPS subject line to various users inside the network, but all got (correctly) marked as SP*M. So I still tried to access the 4/3 and 5/3 to find the message and pass it through the mail analyzer. The only thing I managed to do (here comes the description for the crash incident), is instruct the system to check all the log files. Then ASSP crashed and its process stopped functioning. I would really appreciate if someone could shed some light on this. I really have to hunt this down and resolve it. If everytime this happens (users are no clever people, I have established that since ages ago), , I will end-up wasting my time doing re-installations of windows XP around the offices. Re: [Assp-user] assp and mta in one machine
Hi Nelson, Yes, AFAIK, you can do this. I am using a different MTA, but the result is the same. You setup ASSP in front of it (configure ASSP to listen to port 25), then you set your MTA to another port (say, 2525). ASSP listens to everything coming in from the big bad world, sorts it out, then forwards the good messages to port 2525 (your real MTA port). Just read the docs for your specific MTA. There must a switch allowing you to start SMTP service on a port different than the (25) default. That's pretty much it ! Re: [Assp-user] Comcast screws with outbound mail
Hi, I have the same issue. You can solve this easily. AFAIK, there is a section on ASSP and all you have to do is put the FQDN name in there. Let me check . . . Yes, AFAIK, two things : 1) On the ASSP web interface : Server Setup -- My Name (MyName), write down the FQDN of your mailserver 2) Make sure that your ISP knows there is an MX record for your Ip address on the outside (don't know if you have a firewall or not; most probably, you have) and that also does reverse DNS for the IP. This is a bit tricky; Some ISPs' do it fine and it works and some others don't. OPTIONAL : (Don't know if it makes a difference, I think I does) Make sure you have the FQDN registered under /etc/hosts and also the gateways FQDN and aliases. That's for Unix. If you have windows, I think it's on C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc. Also, make sure you do proper DNS lookup on the inside of you network. Re: [Assp-user] How do you get into the forums?
OK, this is it. I _demand_ (this time round) any of the developers to come forward and authoritatively state what is the status of this list. I have too much work to do and not much time to fool around either with Fritz or with anyone else. I DO NOT - REPEAT : DO NOT WANT TO USE WEB-BASED FORAE. I've had enough with all this and want to do my job by mailing list. If you, people think we are human fodder, just say so and we can get on with our business as usual (and off your list). In the mean time, either Fritz (can you hear me Sir ? I am writing this and it is addressed to you Sir !) or anyone else from this project come forward and state the status of the project. Are we allowed to post to this list ? Will our answers be met with the appropriate seriousness such a project _demands_ ? OR are we playing around with perl and other toys ? If this list is no longer functional and opted to answer our questions, then I WILL : 1. Report this to sourceforge and the open source community if they don't do anything, I will : 2. Stop using this piece of software however good it is. 3. Go to commercial product and do my job. 4. Advertise to anyone I can the way people are treated when they ask questions. I can do this (and then some) with far superior products for the _minimum_ cost. Either treat us like you're supposed to, or (at least I, for one) am off this list and stop using this product, Enough is _indeed_ enough. spyros tsiolis --- On Tue, 9/6/09, Jeroen van Aart jer...@mompl.net wrote: From: Jeroen van Aart jer...@mompl.net Subject: Re: [Assp-user] How do you get into the forums? Hi Matti, No, your english is just fine. What I am saying here is that I post messages in this list for critical answers to make my production system work properly and out of the blue, I discover that no-one from the development team (one of the gurus) is going to answer them, unless my questions are answered by someone like you. I find that a little discomforting, since I am not playing with clients installations. I've asked things here time and again and got no answers. I do _not_ _demand_ answers, but why do we bother writing here if no-one answers our technical queries. That's what I am getting at. I am sorry but I, too, have problems expressing what I think in words, even in my native language. That, most of the times, gets me in really bad situations, trying to explain myself. [Assp-user] v1.4.3.1 to v1.5.1.1 and then some. . .
Hello list, First of all, I would like to thank all the people who helped me on the upgrade issue. I did _not_ know there was an install.txt file. Reading that file, I found out how silly of me it was to keep asking the same questiong. However, the alzheimer has, indeed, advanced ( ;-) and I have to say that I almost LOST my v1.4.3.1 assp folder due to the fact that I was careless. What happened ? I hear you asking. . . Well, I had two directories installed on my mail server : one was called assp_v1.4.3.1 (the old sources upgrade directory, let's call it. . .) and the other was the actuall assp folder. I wanted to do some housekeeping and I thought convenient to start deleting the ACTUALL WORKING folder ! So, what happened? I hear you ask again. I managed to recover the essentials : spam was still untouched notspam was still untouched and upgraded to v1.5.1.1 and got assp.cfg (which was gone, sorry to say) from the old mailserver box that was still laying around waiting to be written-off. Anyway, all went fine (as far as I can tell). Here's a question for you kind people: Eventhough I checked all the relevant perl modules, _before_ I started upgagrading from v1.4.3.1 to v1.5.1.1 (oooh ! that's surprising! :-), I checked the ASSP information and statistics page to find out that some of them are missing. More specifically : Email::Send - sending .eml files is not available IO::Socket::INET6 - IPv6 support not available IO::Socket::SSL - SSL support disabled Text::Iconv - kyrillic charset converter not available Net::SenderBase - countrycode checks not available Tie::RDBM - mysql usage not available also , not available is the clam module : File::Scan::ClamAV - not installed If I try to install it, it says Running make test Make had some problems, won't test Running make install Make had some problems, won't install Anyway, I am not interested so in ClamAV as I am interested in the rest of the modules. This is really odd. Also could someone explain the logic behind these two options ? I do not understand what they do from the description on the actual page. Anyway. Thank you VERY MUCH. Thank you all the people who helped on this. s. --- On Tue, 14/4/09, Hisham his...@sf.batelco.com.bh wrote: From: Hisham his...@sf.batelco.com.bh Subject: Re: [Assp-user] HUGE problem on v1.5.1.1 upgrade To: For Users of ASSP assp-user@lists.sourceforge.net Date: Tuesday, 14 April, 2009, 2:50 PM On IP Blocking, try to disable : Do Deny Connections from these IP's (DoDenySMTP) Do Deny Connections from these IP's Strictly (DoDenySMTPstrict) Spyros Tsiolis wrote: Hello people, My worst nightmare has come true. [Assp-user] Rushed (WAS: v1.4.3.1 to v1.5.1.1 and then some. . .)
Chaps, I spoke too soon. You have my apologies. It seems the modules were not installed in the first place. Hence the report on the ASSP pages. Please disregard my last message. However, I have another question ; On : http://www.magicvillage.de/~Fritz_Borgstedt/assp/S06660E7E?WasRead=1 There is the assp_v1.5.1.1.zip zipfile and seperate files like whiteorg.txt or rebuildspamdb.pl and so on. What is the story on this ? Do I just copy the stuff over from the zipfile or do I get the seperate files onto the working assp folder ? I am kinda lost on this. Re: [Assp-user] HUGE problem on v1.5.1.1 upgrade
No, sorry, I don't get this. This is a weird option. There is an option that says to allow smtp connections from subnets. This, I don't get it. At all. I do not understand what they do from the description on the actual page. Simply put, the DoDenySMTP means that, if an email coming from one of the listed IPs isn't from a whitelisted sender or in any case has no special exception, then it will be refused, on the other hand the DoDenySMTPstrict means that NO exception will take place, any connection from one of those IPs will be directly REJECTED and the purpose for both should (I hope) be pretty clear -- This SF.net email is sponsored by: High Quality Requirements in a Collaborative Environment.
