Religion must be the cause of unity

2006-05-30 Thread David Friedman
'Abdu'l-Baha says that if religion is not the cause of unity then it would
be better that there were no religion. I was wondering how we can not be
seen as hypocritical given that Baha'is are not allowed to renounce their
religion regardless of circumstances. 'Abdu'l-Baha says that if religion is
not the cause of unity then no religion would be better, but if this
situation existed in real life would Baha'is be willing to renounce their
religion?

RE: inspiration or revelation?

Hasan wrote: Does

'Abdu'l-Bah"

Dear Hasan,

As an English only speaking person, I'm quite comfortable with
the phrase "revealed by" in reference to'Abdu'l-Bah's prayers and
tablets. While recognizing that He was not a Manifestation of God, I
believe thereare sufficient passages from the Sacred Writings of
Baha'u'llah to indicate that 'Abdu'l-Bah' was divinely inspired - not the
least of which, was the appelation: Mystery of God.

My feeling is that this refers toHis measure of
receptivity, capacity and recognition of "divine inspiration" ... which
any of us are potentially capable of ... in a literal sense.

I would also consider that the term "revealed" in reference to
'Abdu'l-Bah's personal tablets to individuals falls into the the category of
the 2nd or 3rd meaning of reveal. See below.

Lovingly, Sandra

reveal
Function: transitive verb
1: to make known through divine
inspiration
2: to make publicly or generally known
3: to open up to view
synonyms
REVEAL, DISCLOSE, DIVULGE, TELL, BETRAY mean to make known what has been or
should be concealed. REVEAL may apply to supernatural or inspired revelation of
truths beyond the range of ordinary human vision or reason divine will as
revealed in sacred writings. DISCLOSE may imply a discovering but more often
an imparting of information previously kept secret

How about inspired by God and revealed by
Abdu'l-Baha?

and with certain prayers revealed by 'Abdu'l-Bahá
-- such communications constitute in themselves a notable and illuminating
chapter in the history of the unfoldment of the Bahá'í Administrative Order.

God, desiring to prevent dissension in His religion, has prevented it thus:

The purpose of the Blessed Beauty in entering into this Covenant and
Testament was to gather all existent beings around one point so that the
thoughtless souls, who in every cycle and generation have been the cause of
dissension, may not undermine the Cause. He hath, therefore, commanded that
whatever emanateth from the Centre of the Covenant is right and is under His

Re: inspiration or revelation?

2006-05-30 Thread Richard H. Gravelly
But in your thread, revealed/inspired seems to be a question of status
for the human participant.

What is relavant, dear Gilberto, is that the Baha'i Revelation as with the
Qur'an is the Revelation of God and confirms what went before.

3 He hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming
that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the Torah and the
Gospel. (The Qur'an (Pickthall tr), Sura 3 - The Family Of Imran)

One must always refer to the Covenant of God and follow it. As Shoghi
Effendi is the last Interpreter; and he states that Abdu'l-Baha has
revealed Tablets or Prayers; then Abdu'l-Baha has revealed Tablets and
Prayers.

Richard.

Richard.

Also relevant is this:

the paramount purpose of all Bahá'í activity is teaching. ALL THAT HAS BEEN
DONE OR WILL BE DONE revolve around this central activity, the head
corner-stone of the foundation itself, to which all progress in the Cause
is due. The present challenge calls for teaching on a scale and of a
quality, a variety, and intensity outstripping all current efforts. The time
is now, lest opportunity be lost in the swiftly changing moods of a frenetic
world. Let it not be imagined that expedience is the essential motive
arousing this sense of urgency. There is an overarching reason: it is the
pitiful plight of masses of humanity, suffering and in turmoil, hungering
after righteousness, but bereft of discernment to see God with their own
eyes, or hear His Melody with their own ears. They must be fed. Vision must
be restored where hope is lost, confidence built where doubt and confusion
are rife

cancerous materialism

2006-05-30 Thread Richard H. Gravelly

I found it rather instructive to read the article
at the posted URL below in light of the rather terrifying quotation from Shoghi
Effendi.
"It is this same cancerous materialism, born
originally in Europe, carried to excess in the North American continent,
contaminating the Asiatic peoples and nations, spreading its ominous tentacles
to the borders of Africa, and now invading its very heart, which Bah'u'llh in
unequivocal and emphatic language denounced in His Writings, comparing it to a
devouring flame and regarding it as the chief factor in precipitating the dire
ordeals and world-shaking crises that must necessarily involve the burning of
cities and the spread of terror and consternation in the hearts of men."
(Shoghi Effendi, Citadel of Faith, p.
125.

In English, a Tablet inspired by 'Abdu'l-Baha

Abdu'l-Baha revealed prayers and tablets, they
are revelations of the Word of God, that's why
they are considered Scripture, and references to
