I have figured out where the chat script and settings rest, edited the
script to reflect the correct dialup number *99# for Vodafone Mumbai (not
the default *99#) and after Bart's advise, have been successfully able
 to *establish* a connection.

 […]

 Look under /home/root/Applications/Network/chat/

There will be a connect-dialupxx (where x's are some numbers) script,
containing the parameters you have entered in the fields you in the gprs
gui. The last line has the dialup number.

Re: DOOM For Neo Freerunner / 1973

2008-11-04 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Great news about a great game on a cool device ;)

But I have the same problem with Doom as with Duke Nukem 3D : it's
horribly slow, much slower than youtube videos of these FR games. And so
it is not playable at all.

While running Doom, I have no sound and 'top' tells me my FR is almost
idling. While running Duke Nukem, I have a crappy sound. And while using
a media player to play some mp3 my CPU consumption is huge : only
pythm frontend+mplayer backend seems light enough to allow me to listen
music.

Does someone have an idea of what my problem could be ? I did not see
any particular error messages in stdout/stderr, nor in strace output.

Xavier.

Can you give us some details about your current distro and anything other
information that might be interesting? I've noticed slow game play rarely
(but when I do it is bad,) It seems to have something to do with the state
of the phone config? I haven't put my finger on it. I can assure you it is
not supposed to be slow. I have an SD distro that is loaded to the teeth
(OM2008-update). And a lean fresh NAND install of OM2009 (I have noticed the
lean install runs Doom quite quickly.)

Let's do some investigation.

Re: VARTA Digital USB Charger

2008-11-04 Thread Radek Bartoň

This was clearly my fault, a bit promoted by the wrong pictures in the
manual of the VARTA Digital USB Charger: the pictures show the LED of
each cell 'on' when it is full, while the manual stated correctly that
 the LED of each cell is on while charging and blinking on full;
in short: the cells have been nearly empty :-)

I've fully charged now the four AA cells of 2700 mAh and USB-out is
 working as it should; the battery.py shows 1000 mA charging rate;
this pack of 4 cells each 2700 mAh give you around 10,000 mAh

 I will do  more tests and update the Wiki after this about this charger;

   matthias

Thanks for good news. Keep going.

selected select network automatically for GSM, searching was
running...).
And now I cannot boot successfully anymore (sometimes it shuts down
quite early during boot, sometimes just after android booting screen).
Just like if there was not enough battery...
I was running connected to usb (but on windows, not recognized, so
probably 100mA max).
Though booting into qtextended I can see that battery is about 50%

(and trying to boot without SIM gave same result now, shut down soon
after android booting screen)

... but after playing a while, my phone shut off suddenly (I had just
selected select network automatically for GSM, searching was
 running...).

The problem should be in the uSd card, some guys in the IRC successfully

One of them have this partitions on a 4gb card:

Hmm, I flashed exact the same uboot file, and I get Nov 4 in the u-boot

booting from the other...

In that case, you could use dfu-util to download this uboot version :)

since its possible I want to use my Freerunner with an USB mouse :-)
I got it working flawlessly by plugging the mouse in while the phone is
in host mode and removing the -hide-cursor argument from the ARGS
 variable in /etc/X11/Xserver.
Unfortunately you have to restart your Xserver each time you want to
show/hide the mouse cursor. I was wondering if there is a way to change
the visibility of the cursor while the Xserver is running so I don't
have to reboot every time I want to get rid of the cursor again.

basically - no. there is no x extension or call to globally make a cursor not
visible or visible. thus it's a cmd-line option. you can make an attempt at
this in the window manager by setting root cursor to blank or visible BUT
amny apps and toolkits explicitly set cursors of their own on their own
 windows
or on their widgets (eg a different cursor over text areas) and the root
 cursor
is overridden here - thus the global disable option to not have to go patching
every app/toolkit and still possibly get a cursor.

What about setting a transparent cursor by default allowing to change
theme (to a non-transparent cursor) on-the-fly?

(Of course this is Google's software and their decision, but I don't think
Android is as open as in free software.)

Another suggestion: treat Android like every other distro - prefix threads

2008-11-04 Thread Quasar

It works fine on my FR too, although I faced a problem that might have to do
with why it's not working sometimes: when I first started Android, it
detected that my battery was empty (I'm pretty sure it's not) and
immediately shut down, I tried connecting it to the charger and starting it
again, and it worked.

A couple of things to note though:
1. As mentioned previously, the call volume is too low.
2. Even with the FR charging, it continued to detect the battery level at
0%, so once I disconnected the charger, the FR shut down immediately.
3. I'm not sure if Android has a suspend capability, but looking through the
settings didn't yield anything, so any feedback regarding this matter would
be highly appreciated.

This is a first release, and problems with (or lack of) features of less
importance such as Wifi, and GPS, are naturally expected. But so far, I
think I like the platform as a whole :-)

Thank you Sean, great work...

Can any openmoko engineer shed some light on this - has there been anything

My Freerunner worked fine with my O2 Germany 3G card from October 2006 and
works fine with my new O2 Germany 3G card from July 2008. If you are unlucky

Yes indeed, it writes a lot of thinks here, thanks...

Still there seems to be a problem with battery status detection.

After deleting its files on mmcblkop2, it booted again (but in the

I'll see if it shut down again after a while when battery is half

Arr, I should have thought a minute more about what I was writing. I mean
Google's backdoors to ban unwanted software without asking the user about it
and such. Dunno about GPLv3, but this does not interfere with the freedom of
the software... btw, one could remove that feature. :X
So in the end it's my definition of free software that it does not comply

Another suggestion: treat Android like every other distro - prefix

 Agree.

In action.

Hi all, Numptyphysics, this great physics drawing game, is reborn!
There are not yet new upstream release, but there are lots of new
things in svn-repository. So we can now play numptyphysics0.2-svn109
on our Freerunners. (Tested with Debian and Fdom).

 upstream news: (https://garage.maemo.org/scm/?group_id=638)
 -newer physics engine (Box2d v2.0.1 http://www.box2d.org)
-scalable window with commandline parameters (so every platfrom will
 use same datafiles)
 -faster drawing
 -more levels
 -action replays

 port news: ( http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/rantalai/freerunner/numptyphysics/ )
 -onSceenKeyboard (control-panel)
-action replays removed (doesn't yet work correct with freerunner)
-NextLevel-dialog-overlay is non-draggable (so clicking it is easier)

I gave it a try but I preferred the previous version because:
 - There are some crashes (i.e when drawing over the virtaul keyboard)
 - It's so much slower (when I played the previous version at 480x640)
it was less usable, but the animations were really smoother
 - The virtual keyboard is very hard to use.

However thanks for your work...

PS: to reset the resolution on crashes, change the desktop file from:
 Exec=xrandr -o 3  numptyphysics -geometry 640x480  xrandr -o 0
to
 Exec=xrandr -o 3  numptyphysics -geometry 640x480; xrandr -o 0

On my old phone I have constantly used its speed dial feature and I
missed it on my FreeRunner. My idea was to simply create a new .desktop
file to start the app with the number to dial.

I've put this in a /usr/bin/show-dialer.sh

#!/bin/sh
qcop service send Dialer showDialer\(QString\) $1

Now I just need to create a desktop file with:
 Exec=show-dialer.sh 0123456789
to run the dialer with the number ready to be dialed.

If you want to call directly a number you could use this dial-number.sh:

#!/bin/sh
qcop service send Dialer dial\(QString,QString\) $1 $1

Using this script, the asked number will be called directly.
Bye!

 http://opendoom.googlecode.com/files/opendoom_0.1_armv4t.ipk ipkg file.

I've implemented a full touch screen only interface for you Neo 1973 guys
out there! Please see Finger-Tippng on wiki. (There is also a video demo).

It's so cool! It's really much more usable than Duke3d (ehy, why don't
you merge the accelerometer engine?! :P) and runs very smoothly...

By the way I've some issues to post:
 - I'd prefer to use the right thumb to shoot (as Duke3d); have you
already set a virtual button for the bottom right area that
generates a key-code to be set in the configuration?
 - I can't save the game, since it asks to input a text
 - sometimes the menu pop-ups while playing also If I'm not touching
   the touchscreen at all.
 - If the screen saver starts, Xglamo gives me a WSOD and I've to
kill and restart it (if I've ssh) to continue using my phone.

For fixing the last issue (that maybe it's due to the fact that I'm
running a kernel with the Harald Welte patches for screen blanking) from
stable kernel branch), by the way, I've changed the launcher script to
temporary disable the screen saver. It works quite well, you can get it
applying this patch [1].

Bye and thanks for your great work!

 AA cells to put them later into the MintyBoost;

well, the paperware of the item claims that in can charge gadgets via
the USB-out function, i.e. you put 2-4 charged cells into the device,
connect it with the cable of our FR press the button 'USB out' and you
 put the power of the cells into the gadget, into the FR in our case;

but it does not work; after pressing the button 'USB out' the green LED
comes on for some seconds, the FR shows 'loading' but then it crashes:
LED goes off, FR falls back to its own battery :-(

...

This was clearly my fault, a bit promoted by the wrong pictures in the
manual of the VARTA Digital USB Charger: the pictures show the LED of
each cell 'on' when it is full, while the manual stated correctly that
the LED of each cell is on while charging and blinking on full;
in short: the cells have been nearly empty :-)

I've fully charged now the four AA cells of 2700 mAh and USB-out is
working as it should; the battery.py shows 1000 mA charging rate;
this pack of 4 cells each 2700 mAh give you around 10,000 mAh

I will do  more tests and update the Wiki after this about this charger;

[QT Extended] Observersation on QtE 4.4.2

2008-11-04 Thread Warren Baird
I've been trying out QT Extended 4.4.2 for a few days now, and I thought I'd
share my observations so far:

  - Stability seems better than I originally thought - After my one
experience seeing it not wake up from suspend on a call, I haven't noticed
any other issues - I've received a fair number of calls and sms's, and the
phone has always woken up.

  - The biggest issue for me atm is that I don't get an audible ring tone
for either calls or sms messages - This is a regression since QtE 4.4.1 -
any suggestions on how to resolve it would be very welcome.

  - I've missed one un-expected phone call because by the time I noticed the
vibration and got the phone out of my pocket, all I saw was the dreaded
'view missed calls?'. However, I think this is more related to the lack of
an audible ring, rather than the problem I saw in OM2008.8 where by the time
the phone woke up from suspend the call had gone to voice mail. I was able
to sucessfully answer an unexpected call this morning, which I don't think
*ever* happened with OM2008.8

  - Battery life is *much* improved over OM2008.8 - I went more than 24
hours without recharging and still had two bars of battery left.

There are a few minor issues I've noticed:

  - the lack of an icon for the terminal in the apps list is annoying.
Does QT Extended provide a 'run' capability, which would allow a user to
directly enter an application to run?

  - 4.4.1 provided 3 different appearance themes - but 4.4.2 only provides
1, and unfortunately it's not the one I preferred.

  - speakerphone mode didn't work - I think this is also a regression from
4.4.1.

Even with the various annoyances and regressions, QT Extended is the closest
I've seen so far to making my OM usable as a daily phone.

I haven't seen the behaviour I saw once with OM2008.8 and once with 4.4.1
where the phone gets into a strange state where it can no longer make or
recieve calls - we'll see if I bump into that one eventually or not...

Freerunner For Sale

2008-11-04 Thread John Koenig
Sadly the time has come for me to say farewell to my Freerunner and I
wanted to give the list first dibs before I list the phone on ebay.

The asking price is $300 (or best offer) + shipping and it includes a
barely used Freerunner, original packaging, and the original accessories
that came with the device. Note that the stylus needs new batteries and
that the touch screen was replaced (after the original cracked) with a
new screen purchased from http://www.qinyielectronics.com.

The device works great and comes pre-flashed with OM 2008.9.

Please send me an email off list if interested.

nice project, but I don't like it to be used as a laucher, since

I think so, too... Tichy is nice, of course, but Illume works already
perfectly (at least for me) and I'm used to it. I don't know your
 exact
problem, but wouldn't it help to use this python-interpreter-sharing
 thing
that came up on devel (?) recently?

Well, I think the problem that paroli will try to solve is not only the
time to start an application, but mostly the fact that applications
don't interact very well between each other.

On the desktop it is -almost- ok to have a clear separation between
applications because we are used to just copy and past information from
one app to an other anyway. Plus we can really feel the logical
separation between the applications : each has its own window, I can
move them around, resize them etc...
On a phone it is not that easy. There is no copy and past, no
possibility to resize or move windows. It takes a much closer
cooperation between applications.

If I see a contact in my contact list I want to be able to click on it,
select call, and see the dialer. If I see the same contact in my history
application, I want to be able to do the same thing, with the same
interface.
That is, the whole set of applications should feel like a single
application.

I guess that is what paroli is about : make the set of phone related
applications perfectly integrated.

Now my opinion is that if paroli succeed in doing that, then illume
shouldn't be needed at all (paroli should have a plugin launcher, so it
could be used to start other app as well (in fact, Michael Goodwill
already implemented a launcher for tichy). But then, nothing prevents
illume to stay, just like it works with FSO and zhone.

Cheers,
- Guillaume

Collaboration and joint efforts sounds like a good idea.
However, I had a look at the project description and it seemed to me
that SHR focuses on development with C and gtk, which is not quite what
we are aiming for, but as I said it was a short look. Could you explain
how EFL fits into the picture?

SHR has nothing to do with only C and GTK. We aim to deliver a stable
and working community driven distribution. We first thought to port
the old 2007.2 GTK applications to frameworkd, as by that time, 2008.9
wasn't out yet and 2007.2 wasn't stable enough. We ended up building
an architecture allowing the user to install different libraries
related to frameworkd functionnalities, and allowing him to change the
library used for this or that part in a configuration file.

In the end, quickdev (a SHR developer) managed to develop quite fast a
working dialer, messages and contacts software based on EFL, in a
library implementing the logic built in SHR
(libframeworkd-phonegui-efl).

This logic is described here :
http://shr.bearstech.com/trac/wiki/SHR_Architecture
What he did is to implement the specifications written in
libframeworkd-phonegui, using libframeworkd-glib to abstract the dbus
connection.

In the future, I'd like to settle the mainloop problems with
libframeworkd-glib, allowing the user to choose which kind of dbus
library libframeworkd-glib should use at runtime (i.e. attaching
itself to the mainloop of the user/developer choice, hence avoiding
the management of threads).

I also would like to see how our logic can interact with things such
as tichy (as discussed with Guillaume), or other languages than C.

In any case, if you manage to build a share object with method hooks
usable in C, you're free to use the language of your choice.

Hence, it would worth it if we shared our efforts, we're just a few
people working out here, and several of us could build something even
better :-)

Yes, this I can help you with. (Details are on
unsyncopated.com/BrainSolvent/Doom_Port)

Edit the .opendoom/opendoom.cfg file and goto accelerometer section. There
are constants for the deadzone and sensitivity. If you need further
assistance, drop me a line.

BTW. I believe the Z-Axis is tied to forward/backward motion and the Y-Axis
is tied to left/right. (Per the CFG references).

Seat in embedded Linux training session offered to a contributor

2008-11-04 Thread Michael Opdenacker
Hello,

This could be useful for European contributors to the OpenMoko project,
especially for people who wish to learn more about the kernel and about
embedded specific topics...

For the 4th time, we are offering a free seat in our upcoming
embedded Linux training session (December 1-5, French Riviera, close to
Nice) to a deserving community member.

Full details on http://free-electrons.com/community/training/free-seats

The session will be in English. Going to Nice can be pretty cheap, as
there are lots of low cost airlines offering direct flights to Nice. The
hotel and breakfast would cost approximately 70 EUR per day, and dinner
shouldn't exceed 30 EUR.

If you win, there's no problem to do it during your work time (if your
boss agrees, of course). We could still fill up training related
paperwork if needed (sign-in sheets, diploma, evaluation form summary,
etc.).

Hope some of you will be interested... We will be delighted if one
of the contributors to OpenMoko wins.

Cheers,

Michael.

For FSO there is a sample on the DBus wiki page,

  http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Dbus

which says:

  mdbus -s org.freesmartphone.ogsmd /org/freesmartphone/GSM/Device
org.freesmartphone.GSM.Call.Initiate '12345' 'voice'

Since it's all magical DBus stuff, the dialer will actually see that
there is a call in progress and switch modes and everything. You might
have to do something with your window manager to give the dialer focus
though.

Hi Julien,

Just so you know, SHR already chose this path, and we successfully
built our dialer based on EFL (and currently moving to elementary),
using frameworkd, and libframeworkd-glib which is used as a tool
allowing the developer to forget about dbus management.

Collaboration and joint efforts sounds like a good idea.
However, I had a look at the project description and it seemed to me
that SHR focuses on development with C and gtk, which is not quite what
we are aiming for, but as I said it was a short look. Could you explain
how EFL fits into the picture?

Hello Warren,

I also have the problem with the missing ring-tones. Just choose one you
copied to the file-system. It seems as if the builtin tones are just not
found/included.

I haven't quite understood one point - does your phone wake up from suspend
when you get a call? For some people (sounds like everybody) the resume is
working - but not for me.

With speakerphone mode didn't work - do you mean the acoustic feedback? I
found an AT-command which has to be sent at the beginning of each call. I
compiled a library including this command and the one that fixes the echo
bug and now I don't have any sound problems during calls.

Since I don't want to switch phones all the time, I am using the Freerunner

annoying stuff, but am already very happy with the system.

it might work -- but the usb spec does not specify that kind of thing.
and, there's no guarantee that indeed 2x500 is drawn -- it might as well
be 1x1000 and 1x0.
those external harddisk usually only pull more then 500 for a very short
time at startup (if at all). so, it's either up to the fuse or the usb
host to allow that -- but i am sure, trying to _charge_ with 500 is

[QTextended 4.4.2] Browser is buggy?!

2008-11-04 Thread steffen . linux
Hey there,

after getting my GPRS connection working, I now have a problem with the browser
of QTextended.

When I surf on a website (maybe google.com) the website is rendered
correctly...but, when I type something in the search box and hit Search there
is for a very short moment a loading bar with 10%, after maybe 1/2 second it is
away and nothing else happened...

Same on many other sites: When I click on something that should redirect me to
an other website, the browser doesn't make anything.

Is there someone else who discovers this problem? Or is it a problem with my
GPRS connection?

since its possible I want to use my Freerunner with an USB mouse :-)
I got it working flawlessly by plugging the mouse in while the phone is
in host mode and removing the -hide-cursor argument from the ARGS
  variable in /etc/X11/Xserver.
Unfortunately you have to restart your Xserver each time you want to
show/hide the mouse cursor. I was wondering if there is a way to change
the visibility of the cursor while the Xserver is running so I don't
have to reboot every time I want to get rid of the cursor again.

basically - no. there is no x extension or call to globally make a cursor
not visible or visible. thus it's a cmd-line option. you can make an
attempt at this in the window manager by setting root cursor to blank or
visible BUT amny apps and toolkits explicitly set cursors of their own on
their own windows or on their widgets (eg a different cursor over text
areas) and the root cursor is overridden here - thus the global disable
option to not have to go patching every app/toolkit and still possibly get
  a cursor.

What about setting a transparent cursor by default allowing to change
 theme (to a non-transparent cursor) on-the-fly?

as i said -apps and toolkits often explicitly set their own cursor - the root
cursor won't get inherited and thus u see whatever the app set instead of
blank. that is why the cmd-line options exists to force it always to be off :/

Thanks for the tip - I've copied a few .wav files onto my FR, and now I do
get ring tones! That's very useful.

For suspend - yes, I configured my phone to go into suspend mode when on

for speakerphone - I mean that if I turn on the speakerphone option while on
a call, it doesn't change anything - the sound still comes through the
earpiece, not through the speakers.
