I don't care for 3G. GSM is a crappy technology here in the states (I
blame the implementors). We have flat data rates for a variety of
reasons.

Additionally, why are we expecting 3G from OM, they are having a hard
time getting a phone right. Why are we holding them to the same

Re: GPS testing on 2008.12

2008-12-24 Thread Ed Kapitein
Hi Jan,

You could try to work on the low level first:
If you activated gps in the settings, try to do
cat /dev/ttySAC1
this should give you some output like this:

r...@freerunner:~# cat /dev/ttySAC1
NMEA unknown msg*58

$GPTXT,01,01,01,NMEA unknown msg*58

$GPTXT$GPRMC,,V,,N*53

this would indicate that the unit is in fact powered on and working.

Next you could try to start gpsd ( /etc/init.d/gpsd start )
make sure the device in /etc/default/gpsd is /dev/ttySAC1
now you can use gpspipe -r to check if gpsd is getting data.
(gpspipe is in the gps-utils package, so you might have to use opkg
install gps-utils first)
it should look something like this:

r...@freerunner:~# gpspipe -r
GPSD,R=1
$GPZDA,00,00*48
$GPTXT,01,01,01,PSRF inv format*2B
$GPTXT,01,01,01,PGRM inv format*34
$GPTXT,01,01,01,PFEC inv format*2C
$GPRMC,,V,,N*53
$GPVTG,N*30
$GPGGA,,0,00,99.99,,*48
$GPGSA,A,1,99.99,99.99,99.99*30

this would indicate that gpsd is running.

Time to first fix might take a while, please read the wiki about that.
The assisted gps tool (agps-onlinec) really makes the TTFF much faster,
so give it a try.
If you swich of the gps unit the almanac info received with agps-onlinec
seems to be lost, so run it again after each power up of the gps unit.

with tango gps in the trip section you can see how many satelites
should be in view and how many are in view. something like 10/6.

I hope this will get you on your way.
I can recomend navit as an gps application, it is a bit like tomtom and
i find it very usefull.

Kind regrads,
Ed

[2008.12] Make the sound setting permanent

2008-12-24 Thread julien cubizolles
Hi, I've switched to Om2008.12 yesterday and really enjoyed it. I'm
suggesting an improvement to the volume bar during calls. Could the last
setting be recalled on the next call. So far, I've always needed to set
it to max and it's not very convenient when you don't use a headset.

Also, what alsa setting does it change ?

Btw couldn't this volume bar be adjusted by the AUX button (you don't
really need to lock/unlock during a call). It would be more convenient
in my opinion : you don't need to put down the handset to ajust it.

Thanks for the good work,

2008-12-24 Thread Hans Zimmerman

Hey,

I have been doing the exact same thing the last few days.
I thouroughly read the different wiki pages [1] but it did not really
help me besides pointing me to agpsui. I was only acknowledged the
device was working when I activated the GPS, booted tangogps and
started walking around in town. Only then it clearly picked up
satellite's. What I also did when only a single satellite was detected
(according to tangogps) was turning off the gps and then turning it back
on. I'm really not sure whether this had any influence, it only made me
believe so as it made a difference and I got a fix.

Another thing I stumbled upon was some strange qpe behaviour. I
downloaded some maps (quite a lot :) ) and saved them
on /media/card/Maps. Now if I boot my phone, qpe takes a lot of CPU and
the following items appread through logread;

I don't want to have to have a dongle, probably with a separate contract, in

I want my phone to BE my 3G dongle, so I have a decent smartphone with a

For which they were heavily criticised because smartphones (and not so smart

3G is not a special feature any more, it's pretty basic in most handsets.

The FR, with it's all-touchscreen interface and open nature *could* be
forgiven for not having 3G. It's a shortcoming, but it's forgiveable when so
much of the rest was at least near the state of the art - Linux, GPS, uSDHC
etc.

If 03 is released in a year or so without 3G it will have fallen way behind,
especially as the touch screen control is no longer unusual.

If the hardware is fixed at this point then, well, sorry, but OM ought to
revise it.

[2008.12] Unusable due freezings?

2008-12-24 Thread Francesco de Virgilio
Hi all!
First of all, greetings for bring us OM 2008.12, it's probably one of
the most great releases of OM
(the boot in particular is rally cool!).

Now, I flashed it yesterday, as follows:

  dfu-util -a kernel -R -D Om2008.12-om-gta02.uImage.bin
  dfu-util -a rootfs -R -D Om2008.12-om-gta02.rootfs.jffs2
  dfu-util -a u-boot -R -D gta02v5_and_up-u-boot.bin

And all it's ok. GSM works, SMS also, GPS, ssh and internet (through
USB) out of the box, etc etc.
I installed illume theme as follows:

  /etc/init.d/xserver-nodm stop
  vi /etc/enlightment/default-profile
  Change it in -profile illume
  shutdown now

And after changing Illume configs for Engine from SOFTWARE_16 to
SOFTWARE it works very fine.

BUT

Sometimes, it appears almost randomly, OM 2008.12 freezes.
It's a total blocking of the system, nothing works through touchscreen
or ssh, and I'm forced to reboot.
It could be while I'm using TangoGPS or while I'm pressing the answering
button, when I talk or when I close a call.

What do you think about this?

I'll test OM 2008.12 for one or two days but, if this will continue, I
will flash in SHR, in the hope
it will increase the usability of the phone... but, it is a pity, OM
2008.12 with illume is really cool ;)

Yes, Android is flashed into the unit. SD Card contains 2 partitions as

The partitions i mention are showing up in dfu-util -l, which lists all

www.opkg.org - Relaunch!

2008-12-24 Thread Tobias Kündig
Dear Community,

After hours of coding I can present you my little christmas gift for
Openmoko and the whole community: The relaunch of www.opkg.org.
The whole site was recoded. There is a new system and a shiny new design.

These are the changes I made:

New Design
---

The old design wasn't very pretty. The new one is more professional and
hopefully user friendlier than the old one.

The best results you'll get on a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. I'm
sure there are some displaying bugs in other browsers than firefox or in
other resolutions. If you find one, please drop me a line and I'll fix
it ASAP.

There are also some small goodies. For example all new packages since
your last visit are highlighted in the overview.

One note: Please remember that I don't speak English as first language.
So I'm sure there are a lot of grammatically mistakes in the text.
Please let me know that, so I can correct them.

Improved member area
---

If you are logged in, the member area are now appears on the homepage.
You'll find a list of all your packages with useful links like «Edit» or
«Restore older version». By the way, you now can delete your packages
yourself.

The API remains the same
---

The API wasn't changed at all. So if you began to write an application
using it, you don't have to change anything. It simply was ported to the
new system - but the results it gives you, are the same than the old one.

What you should change
---

The URLs for the RSS-Feeds have changed. So please update the URL in
your RSS-Reader. Furthermore I'm sure that not all updates since last
Friday are correctly imported into the database. So please check the
packages you updated since last Friday.

What's next?
---

There are some features I'd like to include in the future. First of all
there's a repository I'd like to create. And maybe I'll include a
feature where you can give the visitor information about the
compatibility of your package. So you can say, yes, it works on
OM2008.12 but not on FSO, for example.
Maybe I'll have to change the category names too because there is some
conversation on the mailing list about it. We'll see...
Of course I'd like to implement your ideas as well. So please write me
if you have a revolutionary idea.

Please let me know http://www.opkg.org/contact.html what you think of
the new site.

I wish you all a merry Christmas,
Tobias

New on screen Keyboard for Hackable1 and Debian written in Python

2008-12-24 Thread kris Occhipinti
Hello,

I've created a new on screen keyboard for the Freerunner.
I designed it for Hackable1.
I tried to make it as finger friendly as possible and use as much screen
space for buttons.
I've only been working on it for one day but it's pretty usable.
Like Hackable1, it's still a little ruff around the edges.

Here is a link to the script
http://www.filmsbykris.com/freerunner-debian/ko-keypad/ko-keypad
you need to have xautomation installed (apt-get install xautomation)
If can install xautomation on om2008 then this keyboard shouldl work on it
aswell

It's hard to describe my keyboard but I'll give it a try

The keyboard is a 12 button keypad.
Each character takes 2 keypresses.
instead of the normal keypad like on your cellphone where you have to press
each key 3 or 4 time
to type one letter and then you end up passing the letter you want and have
to hit the key 3 or 4 more times
and you have to wait if 2 letter you want are on the same button.
This keypad will change all 12 keys to the characters on the button you
choose.
there is a Space button on each key
and if you hit the wrong key there is a blank button next to the space key
to back out.
keys are sent to a temp line before you add them to the final line (but any
thing in the temp line when sending keys will be add)

---todo list---
1) backspace button
2) create list for drop combo box of last 25 or 50 things typed
3) make the sending of keys a little more efficient

I would really love some feed back
Like I said, it's still a little ruff around the edges.

However, I noticed there is only a simple keyboard available. While I was

only 26 characters (a-z) are available.

Any hints are welcome to get this keyboard puzzle resolved.

Re: Stage of GTA03 development?

2008-12-24 Thread Sargun Dhillon
Man, I really don't care for 3G. I don't know if the GTA03 is going to
be slated on a production-quality phone, but for development purposes,
and as a device which I can use as a general purpose embedded projects
base, 3G doesn't matter. If I want data speeds, I'm going to veer away
from GSM, as GSM speeds will not touch CDMA providers (at least in the
USA). I'd like a user-upgradeable model, but in the end it doesn't
really matter. I'd prefer a cheaper, better quality phone, that comes
out soon.

Sorry, thought you were suggesting it as a get-out-of-jail-free for OM and
3G on the 03. If you need it now then sure, that might be an idea.
Personally, my focus on the FR is having a phone that works...

It's suppose to be fullscreen.
even with that option off in matchbox I have it set to go full screen.
You type a line out then hit send or enter + send
When you hit send it closes the keyboard and pastes the sentence in the
application.
(it does this with xte which is part of the xautomation package)
If anyone has had a Nokia N800 it's kinda like that.

For which they were heavily criticised because smartphones (and not so smart

3G is not a special feature any more, it's pretty basic in most handsets.

The FR, with it's all-touchscreen interface and open nature *could* be
forgiven for not having 3G. It's a shortcoming, but it's forgiveable when so
much of the rest was at least near the state of the art - Linux, GPS, uSDHC
 etc.

actually the cpu (soc) and graphics are about as old-school as the 2g gprs. :)
definitely far from state of the art. only things on freerunner that are
modern are:

LCD
GPS
Wifi
BT
case design (sorry the indented screen is very old-school and severely limits
the finger-usability of the device - which as it has no stylus that is part of
it... is the intended use). :)

the rest.. is far behind. :) just trying to keep rumourmill from making it
seem better than it is... :)

If 03 is released in a year or so without 3G it will have fallen way behind,
especially as the touch screen control is no longer unusual.

If the hardware is fixed at this point then, well, sorry, but OM ought to
 revise it.

[FSO/SHR/debian] SMS location app

2008-12-24 Thread Angus Ainslie
I've started an app to help find lost or borrowed Freerunners. It
watches for specially formatted SMSs and when it sees the right one it
SMSs back its location.

Put [1] in /usr/bin/
Put [2] int /etc/init.d/

chmod +x /etc/init.d/sms-sentry.sh
ln -s /etc/init.d/sms-sentry /etc/rc5.d/S99sms-sentry
reboot

Now whenever you text sentry:location to your Freerunner it will
return its lat and lan ( and altitude if available ). It may take
minutes for the return SMS if the GPS is not active when the incoming
SMS arrives.
