I don't want to get into a pissing contest here, but the truebox price

Unless somehow I managed to avoid paying VAT or just forgot to look at
 the actual price... weird.

OK, having looked at their website it seems I'm just ignorant.

299 EUR including taxes is a great deal from pulster!

Just wanted to clarify the shipping charges - we basically pass on the charges
from UPS so it's done per unit weight, but for single quantities it's this:

UK shipping for single units is £15 + 15%vat
EU shipping for most of EU is £35 + 15%vat
Outside EU is £55 + 15%vat

There is a huge scary chart on the website listing all the prices for all
weight bands for pretty much every country that UPS will deliver to if you're
interested.

And yes, we have been stung pretty badly by the plummetting pound - perhaps
UK.gov needs to do more to resurect the old british manufacturing and export
businesses, only without the 3 day working weeks and the continual strikes...

Getting deleted SMS back / Freerunner as a card reader?

2008-12-31 Thread Peter Mogensen
Hi,

A friend of mine asked if he could get some accidentally deleted text
messages back from his SIM card - so I started looking into how a SIM
works and how to communicated with it.

It seems that there's no AT-commands which will give you deleted
messages - right?
If AT+CMGR or similar will get you a deleted message, than that's of
course the easy solution.

I can see that there's several mobile forensic products on the market
which seems to be just smart card readers with the right software. I
have a smart card reader, but I have not tested if it takes SIM cards
(or RUIM cards ... have to find out), but I figured, that another easy
solution was to access the card-reader directly in the FreeRunner if the
hardware allowed for that.

So, can the SIM card in a FreeRunner be accessed like a card reader on a
serial interface?

/Peter

PS: Any other solutions are welcome, btw :)

[QtExtended] Screen Lock - Suspend

2008-12-31 Thread Martin Bernreuther
Hello,
I'm using the Neo Freerunner with Qt Extended 4.4.2
(http://moko.mwester.net/download/uImage-gta02-g291a9d50_mwester-stable.bin +

http://other.lastnetwork.net/OpenMoko/qtextended-4.4.2-gta02-rootfs-release-working-with-SystemRingTones.jffs2)
as my daily phone. Carrying the FR in a pocket, the screen lock application is
well suited to avoid unintentional phone calls etc.
BUT it will still allow the display be turned on, since the touchscreen will be
touched all the time in a pocket.
And carrying the FR in your pocket with a highlighted display might not be the
best prerequisite for a long operating time.
The On Battery Power Management settings (after booting it seems to be always
be Plugged in, but that's another story)
Dim light, Display off and Suspend won't get activated (or only for a
short time) unless you wait with the FR in your hand.
The key+lock looks fancy, but it might be more functional to turn off the
display (or even suspend) after the lock
and keep the display turned off, when touching a certain pattern on the screen
(or the Power button with suspend).
(On the desktop, the screensaver was a screen/energy saver once, but sometimes
uses more CPU cycles than a working computer today...)
The screen lock application seems not to support a password protection. For a
touchscreen device, the password entry
should maybe be replaced with a secret gesture or pattern (maybe like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_(game)),
but I don't see the necessity for such a feature, since the FR shouldn't be
accessible by someone else.
(And if it's stolen the protection is too weak without crypto FS etc anyways).

I still didn't find the button combination to suspend yet. Suspending the FR
manually after use, I would't need
a screen lock application any more. Is there a replacement application, just to
initiate a suspend?
(But I'm also not sure, if I can trust the suspend mode, since I once noticed a
missed call with the FR being suspended.)

What button combination will initiate suspend for FR/Qt Extended?
(Power button will show a menu with Restart Qt Extended, Restart Device,
Shutdown Qt Extended, Shutdown Device, but no Suspend Device
and the AUX button will bring me to the Task Manager Favorites)

(How) Can I customize the screen lock application to do the job?
(Didn't find this entry in the configuration section.)

Thanks,
Martin

P.S.:
Where can I find more Qt Extended documentation other than the
Help-application installed and the FAQs at
http://qtextended.org/modules/xoopsfaq/ (BTW
http://qtextended.org/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=3#33 link is broken),
http://trolltech.com/developer/faqs/qtopia or
http://doc.trolltech.com/qtextended4.4/ (which is for developers)
(How about a section Further documentation at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Qtopia_/_Qt_Extended_on_FreeRunner?)

Not only that, but it depends on the number. My mobile number has a lot of

A very happy new year and new offers from IDA Systems

2008-12-31 Thread rakshat hooja
Dear all,

2008 has been an exciting year for all Openmoko well wishers with the
release of the Freerunner and the development of a vibrant, skilled and
independent minded community ;-). On behalf of IDA Systems I would like to
wish all of you a very happy new year and a prosperous 2009.

Due to favorably EURO-Rupee conversion, from 1st January we are reducing the
price of the Freerunner for buyers in Asia (excluding India) and Australia.
The new price is *EURO 299 inclusive of shipping by UPS*. Till stocks last
this price includes the extra headphones and pouch. We are also providing an
extra battery as a gift with this offer in January. (Please note that we
will ship to Europe at the offer prices but we do not have the infrastruture
to provide warranty support in these regions so you may be better of
purchasing from a local distributor)

In India the price remains Rs 22000/- inclusive of VAT/CST and insured
shipping by Bluedart (because of the taxes we pay while making a sale in the
country) but we will be including an extra battery as a gift with all orders
in January.

We will also be anouncing few more offers in the 2nd week of January for
purchases by educational institutions.

Once again thank you all for your support and hope 2009 brings in lots of
joy and happiness to you.

IO errors when booting from SDHC 4gb Sandisk card

Each time the errors come up at a different time during the boot process,

Golden Delicious Computers wants to say Thank you for supporting the Freerunner and wish a Happy New Year

2008-12-31 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Dear all,
what an interesting year has this been!

Let's summarize some months as we have experienced them:

May: it becomes obvoius that the Freerunner will finally become
available!
June: we and our partner Trisoft take first orders
July: we receive the first batch of GTA02v5 devices and were sold out
before we could even sign reception of the packages
August-September: still a long waiting list; GTA02v6 devices with the
GPS fix arrive
October: we present the Freerunner to the professional public on the
SYSTEMS fair in Munich
November-December: the Freerunner gains new momentum by FDOM,
hackable, Android, 2008.12!

In total we have provided you, the community with 10 times as many
units as we had anticipated. It was a lot of work to do so but we have
learned a lot about logistics and import issues and now orders are
handled very smoothly. And we have made a lot of new friends.

So on behalf of Golden Delicious Computers (and Trisoft) I simply
would like to say thank you to all our customers.

I wish you all a happy new year and let's spread even more free(dom)
openness for everyone in 2009!

2008/12/30 john dowd jdowds...@gmail.com:

The Neo registers (using linphone) with the PBX and I can see the
registration happening but then there is a REQUEST NOTIFY coming
from the PBX to linphone. Linphone responds with a 481: Subscription
does not exist. I've attached this interaction in the tcpdump
formatted file and I'm hoping someone would look at it. What I think
is happening is that the PBX is actually informing linphone that there
are some voicemail messages waiting but linphone does not support this
feature and does not know what to do with this part of the protocol.

I haven't looked at the tcpdump, however... This 481 response
suggests that linphone's default behaviour is only to accept NOTIFY
requests that conform to RFC 3265, i.e. which refer to a previously
established subscription. SIP voicemail message notifications, on the
other hand, are often done with a pre-RFC-3265 form of NOTIFY, where
there is no prior subscription. This kind of NOTIFY can be known as
unsolicited, out of dialog or out of subscription, and the
voicemail context is usually called MWI, for messages waiting
indication.

So, suggest you google and/or check linphone's man page / docs for
support for some of those terms, and a way to switch that support on.

 Neil

that the price was £227 + VAT = £272. (And for a while that 2/7
swapping confused me a lot!)

So as Anthony has said, it's the plummeting pound.

External battery charger

2008-12-31 Thread Jan Henkins
Hello all,

Hope somebody can help:

I perpetrated the cardinal sin to let my FR battery run completely
empty, so now I cannot boot up to charge the battery. I have purchased a
generic external charger (meant for Nokia batteries, same form-factor as
the FIC battery), but it does not charge the FIC battery (I have read on
the WIKI that most external chargers are useless, but I decided to take
a calculated risk...). I received a generic 600mA battery (half the
FIC's capacity) with the charger, and that seems to work OK with my FR
(apart from the battery level checking that does not work). At least I
can boot my FR with the generic battery in order to do some
development/playing...

It seems that it is quite important to have more than one battery handy
if you want to use the FR for anything serious at the moment, due to the
really bad battery life(a lot better now with 2008.12 which lasts almost
20 hours, with FDOM I could barely get 6 hours...). I'm seriously
considering buying two extra FIC batteries, but then it becomes an
important item to have an external charger that works. If anybody here
knows of a working model that is available within Europe/UK, I would
appreciate it immensely if you could let me know the make/model and
where to purchase. The battery life situation is actually the very last
item in my mind that will keep the FR out of mainstream use, the
available software stacks all have the basic capability to address all
usability issues (GPRS/GSM et al). TangoGPS is fantastic! ;-)

In the meantime, is there any (non-destructive) way to coax the FR into
life with the flat battery, so that I can charge it?

Thanks in advance!

Jan Henkins

I also see cell phone dump boxes at a few different department stores as
recycling depots.. Maybe you could snatch a compatible batteries from
one of the nokias in the box?

What I've done is boot the Freerunner with the spare battery, plug in the wall
charger that came with the Freerunner (or force 500 mA charge on a suitable USB
charger supply) then remove the spare battery and put in the FIC battery. The
Freerunner will run without battery when the wall charger is plugged in and
will charge the FIC battery once it is inserted.

Or with a recent uboot - plug into usb and wait for 10-15 minutes.
Remove usb and battery for 30 seconds, plug back in and it should
bootup. You may need to remove/replug the usb to make sure its charging
properly once up.

USB defaults to 100ma, not enough to boot the FR, but it will
tricklecharge it when off until enough of a charge exists to boot - once
past the intial boot stage, the CPU negotiates the full 500ma and all is
fine.

Re: [Android] on SD card

2008-12-31 Thread clare johnstone
Radek thank you very much for this post. I was able to try the
Android; very interesting.
Having the SD card version was a great help. I like the real clock
faces especially.
I will try your further suggestions if I get some spare time, by then
it may all be different..
Good wishes for New Year,

 Hi,
i have android booting from SD card. It wasn't that hard to make it work.

You will need SD with one ext3 partition. Download and unpack tarball from
here [1] and boot with Qi [2]. First boot take quite a lot of time. Then it
 will be faster.

You can also compile from sources [3] and put the rootfs together yourself.
You just have to put together what is in out/target/product/freerunner
directory and add kernel (either the Sean's [4] or andy tracking[5]). I have
attached my script which does this [6]. Last this is to modify init.rc file
so that it mounts SD card, you can find it attached or here [7].

While Android boots or later you can attach to it with adb like this:

 ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.200
 adb kill-server
 adb shell
 adb logcat

I hope this helps us with killing bugs that Android on FR currently has
(suspend, power off, GSM crashes, ...)

 Cheers
