Thanks for the file! I was wrong about the file location, I meant ./.gconf/apps/tangogps/%gconf.xml I only had mapsOSM/maps there so it was hard-coded in tango. But as I earlier said, I think that if you change/add something in the tango repository configs it'll save it here. So I'd say the default values are hard-coded. But anyway, thanks for the file, I finally got yaouh up and running, updating my 30 000 tiles :) Every now and then I get wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found but mostly it looks like running nice. Serialized curl spend most of the time waiting for an answer, while one request and a very small answer moves through the network to a distant server and back again. Please don't get me wrong, i actually browsed the mailing lists and wikis, but still there are some unsure things, and i'd like to have a bit more of a summarization. I'm interested in buying an openmoko Neo Freerunner, but i'd like to get to know some things before i will. I'm a student, so 300 €(even 249 €, Pulster ;) ) is an amount of money i can't spend every month, or w/o any effort. So i don't want to end up getting a Neo now, being unsatisfied and getting a gta03/other brand later this or next year. I'm not that deep into Linux, but i'm running Ubuntu reasonably well, so i'm not totally unfamiliar with linux. i know what svn/git is, and wouldnt be totally unable to build somethings from sources - although it's not an every day task here. So, here's my list of questions, i hope somebody will answer and clear them up a bit :) 1st) Battery Power sometimes i'm at university from 9am to 10pm 6 days a week. I'm often browsing mobile news pages with my phone when going to university, or having a chat (XMPP of course!), approx 40 minutes a day. In the meantime i'm listening to music. I got no actual watch, so my phone is my watch, means i often activate the background light to get to know the time. I'm sending like 1-5 messages a day, having a phone call now and then. Now and then i would like to access the web via wifi. So, since i'm not able to plug the phone to a power source at university, would i be able to run it the whole day, without getting out of battery power after 10 hours? And, will there be a (software) fix (soon) for the issue, that the battery gets uncharged, even if plugged in, as soon as the battery is fully charged? (i got no problem charging the phone every night, but when it's fully charged at 2am, it would have been running 7 hours on battery power by my arrival at university, so the battery would be low sooner) 2) Calls As i'm sometimes having a phone call (huh, surprise), i would like to know, if the echo, and especially the buzzing issue will be fixed soon. I read, the echo was fixed in FSO/SHR already, but regarding the buzz i read the mailing list, but there i didnt feel i got a reliable answer(sorry for asking again). i'm not familiar with soldering iron, and i'm not willing to crack up another phone (already did once this way :) ). So, will there a fix of this buzzing soonish by default (a7, a8?) on the base of the often refered capacitor? (as i said, i'm not willing to pay twice, getting a gta03 later due to unfixed buzz problems, or replacing a damaged freerunner). Also, i'm not willing to pay 300€ for a phone that doesnt allow me to have a nice talk with my dad or gf on an at least acceptable level for the person on the other end (u know, my gf isn't that patient and insightfull with opensource software(issues) as i am, it took me weeks and shutting down icq completely to convince her to use xmpp :) ) 3) Software I got no problem with rudimentary software. Most important thing is Sending messages, Having a few Calls, Having GPS apps to improve Openstreetmap and such and browsing the web. I know the software is something being worked on, and apparently it improved a lot already. But: Do such basic features work already (like browsing phone book to make a call) acceptably reliable? I'm patient in handling problems and fiddling around a bit, wanting to have a succes in the end though. And: how sluggish is the software? i often read glamo slows the phone down pretty much. 4) GTA03? Or would u rather advise me to wait for GTA03? I really want to support Openmoko, and to be honest, as i heard first of openmoko like 2 years ago, i already wanted to have one. On the other hand, i'm sorry to say, that such fundamental bugs hold me back getting one yet. But according to the wiki, gta03 will have features like EDGE, a Cam, better battery and removed glamo (rather fast software feeling and video performance?) that sound very interesting. EGDE would be nice, but for me isn't necessary, and as Cam i could use my current phone. But shall i, at least, rather wait for a7, or a8 if i want a buzz fix by default? at the moment, this is, besides battery life, the issue that concerns me most. 5) Summarize Long story short, i don't want to get disappointed buying a neo. I mean, fancy features, software and such is nice to have, but if fundamental things won't work (acceptable), I and many others won't support Openmoko on the long term, means replacing the Neo with a later release of Openmoko in 1,2 or 3 years. and, as sean moss pultz wrote, John Doe won't see any advantage of getting an openmoko over other open (haha, at least on his point of view) phones like iPhone, and Android ones. Hopefully i'll get some constructive hints on my questions, and if i'd rather wait, or buy on the spur of

Euphony Beta 1 release
Hey guys, some might have seen and remember epiano, the little demo app I wrote a while ago to have a nice touchscreen-piano for the Neo. Since then, I have been busy writing a successor that enhances the concept quite a bit. Some might already have seen or tested it, it's called Euphony. So - where's the difference? Epiano was really only a piano, start it and the white and black keys were there. Euphony is now a framework, or better loader for instruments. So you can use not only the piano, but every instrument you can imagine (if you or someone else creates it). Here's what it looks like in action: http://videos.gstaedtner.net/euphony/euphony_beta1.ogv The bitbake reciepe is in OpenEmbedded, so you can just build it. Otherwise you can get armv4 ipks from my site (link follows). After installing there won't be any instrument, you first have to download one (the 3 demo instruments from the video are available on my site) and put it into ~/.euphony/instruments/ . So if you like, try it, and feel free to give me feedback, patches, suggestions, ..., either as reply to this post on the list, via private mail, or via IRC (you can find me in #neo1973-germany on irc.freenode.org). If you want to create new instruments, check out the small howto on my site and try it, it's really easy if you know edje a little. I'll be happy to host them, too. So, here's my site for more information, instruments and so on: http://tg.gstaedtner.net/projects/euphony.html If you are interested in the sourcecode, you can get it via the release tarballs, or better directly via git://gstaedtner.net/euphony.git Please don't be disappointed by the performance - the audio-backend I use is fluidsynth which is floating point driven and therefore not really Neo-optimized. So you have to play a little slower and use not so complex soundfonts to keep it usable. Unfortunately it's too much work (for me) to change that, so it will only be real fun on faster devices with FPU, like the (hopefully coming soon) GTA03 or similar. If you have any ideas for performance improvement, or you can provide a software synthesizer that uses fixed point, don't hesitate to tell me! :) Last but not least: Thanks to all people who supported me, especially to pfritz and the other guys in #e.de for EFL knowledge and help with C, the people of the pyneo.org project, and of course the developers of the great enlightenment foundation libraries and fluidsynth. As a result the phone keeps ringing for ever! Even if I re-start the xserver the phone keeps ringing! Any idea why that happen? Thanks Tony The changelog for FSO milestone5 includes: Fixed a major bug in the RingToneAction. This (and removing a race in the RingToneAction) fixes problems with neverending vibration and audio ringtone on short calls. Ergo, the problem appears to be fixed upstream and should arrive in SHR when frameworkd there is updated to match M5 FSO. j -- Joel Newkirk http://jthinks.com (blog) http://newkirk.us/om (FR stuff) ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

It is the error you get when you don't set DISPLAY=:0 (by the way very annoying to have a seg fault in that case) but since you took care of setting DISPLAY then I don't know. Can you run this simple test : DISPLAY=:0; python -c 'import etk' And see if you get the same error. /Guillaume signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: yaouh! 0.4 is out
I tried this on my desktop Ubuntu (more online time, faster computer network etc..): I copied the yaouh.py to the desktop computer and run it: The GUI starts OK (without pictures) and I see all the repos in the list. r...@rubert:~/freerunner$ ./yaouh.py (process:8583): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Unhandled exception in thread started by Traceback (most recent call last): File ./yaouh.py, line 163, in up_progressbar md5=md5sum.read() IOError: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call On another try I got: r...@rubert:~/.gconf/apps/tangogps$ /home/rhk/freerunner/yaouh.py (process:8950): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Unhandled exception in thread started by Traceback (most recent call last): File /home/rhk/freerunner/yaouh.py, line 158, in up_progressbar etag=curl.read() IOError: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call On the third trial I was able to update my two openstreetmap/cycle map images :) And then in the end I got it started updating the 74000 OSM tiles. To me it looks that there's something unstable - it updated four tiles and then stopped. On the next trial it didn't get that far but stopped in the 'loading' stage. Any tips what to change? r -- | risto h. kurppa | risto at kurppa dot fi | http://risto.kurppa.fi ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
