[SHR] Suspend / Resume speed
Hi! I noticed that suspending / resuming on 2008.12 is quite fast compared to SHR. The difference which is most noticeable is that SHR switches to a virtual terminal before and right after suspending, as opposed to 2008.12 which resumes right into X. Is there a way to replicate this behaviour on SHR? I suspect that we could save at least a second of resume time, because printing and scrolling a few hundred lines of kernel log in addition to the mode switches takes a bit of time. This is apparently an issue with recent SHR/FSO, my not quite perfect fix was to go into the illume settings thingy (i.e. the wrench menu) and set the framerate to 5 rather than 30, turn off drop shadows, and to change the render mode from software to software_16. I don't have the freerunner nearby, so I can't check where in the menu you find these things, but I think the framerate is at the bottom of the first menu, the drop shadow under appearance or similar near the end, and the render engine in the advance tab of this? Just as a random example of a Python program using gettext, see https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-installer/usb-creator/trunk I recently patched it so that all aspects of i18n work there, including getting .desktop file entries translatable via PO files. build_i18n of setup.py is the key, see also setup.cfg and deskop/usb-creator.desktop.in on how to handle .desktop files, and finally of course some bit of the code to see gettext usage in action. Since Paroli's .desktop files are currently all in one directory, and applications tend to be small, I'd vote for one single .pot file for the whole paroli at this point - it would collect all the translations and also paroli would use a single translation domain paroli. Re: Introducing CellHunter
As I understand it the reason for OSM changing license is that in some parts of the world copyright does not protect the content of a database because it is considered to be a collection of data not a creative work. To protect the database in those jurisdictions a contractual agreement is required. The Open Data License is an attempt at a license that will give CC-like protection to databases in all jurisdictions. Opencellid is in an identical position as far as I can see, so the Open Data License looks like the best bet unless anyone knows of something with similar coverage. On Sunday 22 February 2009, Thomas Landspurg wrote: Hello Robin, Thanks for poiting this out. Any thought on what license then should OpenCellID use? Hi Sebastian, good to hear you're working on this project. i've been working on openstreetmap.org, a conceptually similar project, for a couple of years now - they are currently in the process of transitioning from cc-by-sa to a new license, specifically designed for databases, with the help of a lawyer or two. their theory is that cc is more for creative content, which is not really applicable to osm; this may be useful for your project too. more info here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_License ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Hello. On Fri, 2009-02-20 at 20:00, Stefan Schmidt wrote: First problem. Where can I find the source code? Something like a tarball with the version number in the name or a source code management system would be best. It seems I'm only able to download the ipk but not the files it was build from. Did I miss something? It is Python based, so the files in the package are the source file. Yep, I'm aware of that. You will find in the package everything needed: source code, desktop file, images, glade file, authors, licenses, etc... Yep, this is also known. It's not the first software I bring into OE which then builds such ipk's :) Let me explain my point a bit more. You are writing the software and releasing a new version when you think new features are implemented or bugs are fixed. In the FOSS world is is normally done as atarball that includes all the source files ready to build. Now python has nothing that needs compiling but it still needs to get packaged in a way that makes it easy for user to install it. You have done this yourself when preparing your ipk. But this package may need adjustment from time to time when other parts of the system change so it is always good to build it together with the rest of an image and have it in the so called feeds where the user can easily install it over the package management. That's what I like to do for you. You have more or less the same setup as the cellhunter game: Python scripts, desktop file, icon, etc. I just packaged this and Sebastian provides an tarball with all the files flat in the dir with package name and version and OE takes care of the rest. If you need a tarball, I will try to put something together out of my freerunner tomorrow. Hmm, you have no kind of version control? Let me say you that this is a bad habbit. Learned my lesson. :/ Back to the point. Yes, I would need a tarball, or a public available SCM. For a tarball please use something like this as name: $applicationname-0.3.0.tar.gz Which then should contain a directory with the same name but without file ending: $applicationname-0.3.0 Inside this dir just put your files and I take care that they are installed properly within the ipk. regards Stefan Schmidt ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

A few directories with small stuff. I read on the wiki that Qi first tries to boot from the first 3 partitions on the card and after that from flash memory. It's the latter that does not seem to work quite that well, at least on my FR. When I feel adventurous again (and I have more time again), I may play with it some more. Well when you do, remove your SD card first. I'm almost positive you would have at least been able to boot otherwise. When you have it booting with no SD card, then try adding the card etc. From what you have said, it sounds like Qi is having issues probing the SD card and isn't moving on to the flashed kernel. This is one reason I don't use Qi. I can't quite get the timing right for skipping partitions and nearly always forget to even try. My problem can be fixed with a few text files though :) Sarton ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
[2008.12] Enlightenment doesn't want to run anymore
hey, i have been updating software on my freerunner last things i installed were pythm , mplayer then i uninstalled them, after a reboot the screen shows starting atd daemon:atd. last thing and nothing after, i tried running /etc/init.d/xserver-nodm start, and looked at log in /tmp/x.log # RUN INIT: /usr/bin/enlightenment_init '/usr/share/enlightenment/data/init/illume_init.edj' '1' '0' 'Enlightenment' '0.16.999.050' # Segmentation fault # ESTART: 1.77762 [0.95707] - test file format support # run-parts: /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90xXWindowManager exited with code 1011 # waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE built-ins refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing. this is with illume as default_profile, i change that to ASU and i get the following, i can see the booting screen with the green bar for around 0.2 second then back to the atd , now /tmp/x.log shows # RUN INIT: /usr/bin/enlightenment_init '/usr/share/enlightenment/data/init/asu_init.edj' '4' '0' 'Enlightenment' '0.16.999.050' # ESTART: 2.46682 [1.61394] - test file format support # run-parts: /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90xXWindowManager exited with code 1011 # waiting for X server to shut down E17 INIT: XINERAMA CHOSEN: [0], 480x640+0+0 # FreeFontPath: FPE built-ins refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing. where can i go from here!? another thing worth mentioning is that couple of days ago the thing stopped at starting atd daemon:atd. again but Xglamo wasn't starting, i went to check /usr/bin/Xglamo to find that it's 0 bytes!, i just scp a new one from a 2008.12.tar.gz back to freerunner and it worked again. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

For those looking for the 'Advanced' settings: Grab and drag the row of icons at the top from right to left and you should find, altogether: Display Look Screen Input Language Settings Advanced Extensions AFAIK the arrows don't even work, when you tap the right-hand arrow you are effectively clicking on the edge of the 'Input' icon. BTW - the speed with which those icons scroll is how fast the main Illume icons /should/ be able to be dragged, but with the Illume theme as it currently stands (with FSO M5 and SHR at least) each 'desktop' icon is adorned with multiple transparent PNG files layered to create pretty buttons, and scrolling becomes dramatically slower than what you are probably familiar with from the base ASU theme with 2008.x.
