Indeed with NetworkManager connecting the Freerunner was sometimes a pain.

So I switched to wicd a month ago, and now it connects flawlessly... I
kept my network config file the same as I used before.

PS. Also wicd now allows me to turn on/off wifi on my laptop when I
want. With NetworkManager, if I did not turn it on at boot time, it
was not recognized afterwards... And I also prefer its wifi
scanning/configuration, though I still do not understand why it does
not always show my AP (as if it was an hidden network).

 After a mail from c_c

to extend it to an application like the PC Suite app from Nokia.

So you can send SMS from your PC, edit the various settings for the
different applications (TangoGPS, Navit, ...), install applications and
transfer files between PC and Neo.

What do you think? Is such an application needed?

[SHR] Suspend / Resume speed

2009-02-23 Thread Florian Hackenberger
Hi!

I noticed that suspending / resuming on 2008.12 is quite fast compared
to SHR. The difference which is most noticeable is that SHR switches to
a virtual terminal before and right after suspending, as opposed to
2008.12 which resumes right into X. Is there a way to replicate this
behaviour on SHR? I suspect that we could save at least a second of
resume time, because printing and scrolling a few hundred lines of
kernel log in addition to the mode switches takes a bit of time.

Cheers,

Matt and Candy here in Taipei are making a spreadsheet about this too,

for the controls. We'll add it to the Wiki when it's done.

Hm, why didn't they wrote about their plans somewhere? To be able to
better unite our efforts instead of duplicating work?

Moreover, as i see it the diagram i prepared (i didn't want to do it,
but i saw the need and nobody's going to do it so i felt obliged) is
enough to explore every routing possibility, and really deep details
should be looked up in the datasheet anyway.

What would be cool is to understand how to write an ALSA ctl plugin to
present users with some simplified mixer where controls are more sane
and named appropriately to our hardware. I'm afraid spreadsheets don't
help here as one needs to read plenty of code anyway. I hope if Matt
and Candy are good with ALSA, then can at least take part in
discussing this idea to present any user-space app with a clean and
consistent (with our hw) mixer interface.

SHR first impression : it's slow ?

2009-02-23 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Hi folks,

I ruined my OM2008.12 yesterday, trying to put some bad libc6 for

So I told myself let's try this SHR everybody is talking about

I have some problems with :
1. wifi : Wifi Mofi hangs when I run it
2. gps : GPS cannot fix
3. SHR Panels : some panels in 'Settings' hang when I click on them
(GSM/operators for example)
4. Everything is slow

For 1 to 3 I hope I will find a solution by investigating a bit more,
but these things worked 'as if' with OM2008.12 so I was a bit
disappointed... so many people write SHR unstable is very stable, but
I find OM2008.12 to be far more stable...
Maybe something is wrong with my install, I don't know.

For 4 I would need your help, enlightenment eats lots of kernel time in
htop (cpu and memory are still ok), it was 15:00.00 the last time I
checked. I need 2-3 seconds to scroll on desktop, while in enlightement
settings panel (aka the wrench) it is fluid.

Does anybody have an idea for 4. ?

This is apparently an issue with recent SHR/FSO, my not quite perfect
fix was to go into the illume settings thingy (i.e. the wrench menu) and
set the framerate to 5 rather than 30, turn off drop shadows, and to
change the render mode from software to software_16.

I don't have the freerunner nearby, so I can't check where in the menu
you find these things, but I think the framerate is at the bottom of the
first menu, the drop shadow under appearance or similar near the end,
and the render engine in the advance tab of this? Can anyone confirm?

You can find both in the settings-advanced option, after hitting the wrench.
advanced - performance for the framerate
advanced - engine for the software-engine.
It also pays to switch off the animations for things:

What plans are there for I18N of Paroli? I'd like to already start
doing initial translations for various Paroli applications, but I do
not see gettext usage / .pot files etc yet.

Just as a random example of a Python program using gettext, see
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-installer/usb-creator/trunk

I recently patched it so that all aspects of i18n work there,
including getting .desktop file entries translatable via PO files.
build_i18n of setup.py is the key, see also setup.cfg and
deskop/usb-creator.desktop.in on how to handle .desktop files, and
finally of course some bit of the code to see gettext usage in action.

Since Paroli's .desktop files are currently all in one directory, and
applications tend to be small, I'd vote for one single .pot file for
the whole paroli at this point - it would collect all the translations
and also paroli would use a single translation domain paroli. Does
that sound sensible?

Re: Introducing CellHunter

2009-02-23 Thread Al Johnson
As I understand it the reason for OSM changing license is that in some parts
of the world copyright does not protect the content of a database because it
is considered to be a collection of data not a creative work. To protect the
database in those jurisdictions a contractual agreement is required. The Open
Data License is an attempt at a license that will give CC-like protection to
databases in all jurisdictions. Opencellid is in an identical position as far
as I can see, so the Open Data License looks like the best bet unless anyone
knows of something with similar coverage.

Is bluez-utils the same package as bluez4, only a newer version?

bluez4 provides the 4.x branch of bluez rather than the 3.x branch. It should
provide the same functionality, but some bits may work differently. You could
try to install without dependencies to see if remoko will work with bluez4.

Not Ubuntu but NetworkManager in general. As said on the wiki page, one
needs to nail down the MAC address for NM to dish out the same IP.

I use the following on many boxes, so the version numbers can be off a
bit.

NetworkManager-0.7.0-1.git20090102.fc10.i386

create /usr/local/sbin/freerunner-usb-add.sh
create /etc/udev/rules.d/80-freerunner.rules
cd /etc/udev/rules.d/
chcon --reference=40-multipath.rules 80-freerunner.rules
chmod 744 freerunner-usb-add.sh
udevcontrol --reload_rules

Depending on how your firewall is set up, you may or may not have to
issue the following

iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.0/24
iptables -I FORWARD 1 -s 192.168.0.202 -j ACCEPT

This is the result.

WSOD actual problem belongs in the LCM, the kernel though is the main
thing that will make it happen or not. I guess Qi can impact it but
 it's not obvious how.

I have also tried this other kernel:

I have just changed the kernel to shr unstable latest, that I downloaded

I will flash uboot this afternoon, to try if I also get the annoying WSOD

 That's a lie.

You can't brick your modem at all, as it has a ROM bootloader.

Dedicated person can damage calibration data and that'd be a
practically irrecoverable action (CMU-2000 and special soft are needed
for calibration). BUT it's not as simple as making a typo.

Damaging one's modem by typo is practically impossible, moreover, the
new moko11 firmware contains quite an important fixes related to
hardware flow control and resuming from call/sms. As it also fixes all
known issues with any sim cards, it's worth updating.

Thanks Paul,

QT is a gui toolkit, which is used to build QtExtended and many othe

 b) Which driver is QT based on? Can u point me to the right direction?

You can get a basic console system from

After you flash that you can install QtE on it like an application.

nope - there is no such advanced option.

Is there some extra package repository that all of you use,

For it sure isn't in SHR unstable?

Screen has two submenus: Virtual Desktops and Screen Resolution.
There is no advanced, and there don't seem to be an advanced

SHR is based on FSO. Which means that SHR took FSO at some point in
time, and added SHR specific stuff. Perhaps they resynchronize now and
then too - but the newest FSO may very well have something SHR haven't
got yet.

So I wonder - would it be safe to tell opkg about the FSO repository as

So you can send SMS from your PC, edit the various settings for the
different applications (TangoGPS, Navit, ...), install applications and
transfer files between PC and Neo.

What do you think? Is such an application needed?

ssh does this for me already - I use the pc screen pc keyboard because
those are so much more convenient than the freerunner when editing files
or installing stuff.

And to send a SMS from the PC, I can run openmoko-messages from the ssh
command prompt. Then I get the messaging app displayed on the pc. Same
for all the other graphical apps on the freerunner.

Of course this is done with a linux PC, but install a windows xserver
and then this should work for a windows pc too. (Or run linux in a
virtual machine.)

  Well, I'm a fresh-man to Qt.

  a) QT is a library of GUI, is it right?

QT is a gui toolkit, which is used to build QtExtended and many othe

Thanks.
  b) Which driver is QT based on? Can u point me to the right direction?
  Thanks.

I don't get this question...if you mean which distro is the QtE image
based on, it's based on 2008.x unstable

Well, I mean, which kind of low-level API (maybe framebuffer driver) is
QtE based on.

  c) How can I install QT extension? Does I need a basic console file
system? How can I build this simple basic file system?

You can get a basic console system from
http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/ and selecting the console image.
After you flash that you can install QtE on it like an application.

Thanks, so I get console image and then cp below items to
/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia (FR), and finally launch qpe.sh in FR. Is it
right?

/opt/QtopiaSDK/build/qt-extended-4.4.2/image$ ls

from.
Did I miss something?

It is Python based, so the files in the package are the source file.

Yep, I'm aware of that.

You will find in the package everything needed:
source code, desktop file, images, glade file, authors, licenses, etc...

Yep, this is also known. It's not the first software I bring into OE which then
builds such ipk's :)

Let me explain my point a bit more. You are writing the software and releasing a
new version when you think new features are implemented or bugs are fixed. In
the FOSS world is is normally done as atarball that includes all the source
files ready to build. Now python has nothing that needs compiling but it still
needs to get packaged in a way that makes it easy for user to install it. You
have done this yourself when preparing your ipk.

But this package may need adjustment from time to time when other parts of the
system change so it is always good to build it together with the rest of an
image and have it in the so called feeds where the user can easily install it
over the package management.

That's what I like to do for you. You have more or less the same setup as the
cellhunter game: Python scripts, desktop file, icon, etc.

I just packaged this and Sebastian provides an tarball with all the files flat
in the dir with package name and version and OE takes care of the rest.

If you need a tarball, I will try to put something together out of my
freerunner
tomorrow.

Hmm, you have no kind of version control? Let me say you that this is a bad
habbit. Learned my lesson. :/

Back to the point. Yes, I would need a tarball, or a public available SCM. For a
tarball please use something like this as name:

$applicationname-0.3.0.tar.gz

Which then should contain a directory with the same name but without file
ending:
$applicationname-0.3.0

Inside this dir just put your files and I take care that they are installed
properly within the ipk.

Stefan Schmidt

Well when you do, remove your SD card first. I'm almost positive you
would have at least been able to boot otherwise.

When you have it booting with no SD card, then try adding the card etc.

From what you have said, it sounds like Qi is having issues probing the
SD card and isn't moving on to the flashed kernel. This is one reason I
don't use Qi. I can't quite get the timing right for skipping partitions
and nearly always forget to even try.

My problem can be fixed with a few text files though :)

[2008.12] Enlightenment doesn't want to run anymore

2009-02-23 Thread Flyin_bbb8
hey, i have been updating software on my freerunner last things i installed
were pythm , mplayer then i uninstalled them, after a reboot the screen
shows

starting atd daemon:atd. last thing and nothing after, i tried running
/etc/init.d/xserver-nodm start, and looked at log in /tmp/x.log

# RUN INIT: /usr/bin/enlightenment_init
'/usr/share/enlightenment/data/init/illume_init.edj' '1' '0' 'Enlightenment'
'0.16.999.050'

# waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE built-ins refcount
is 2, should be 1; fixing.

this is with illume as default_profile, i change that to ASU and i get the
following, i can see the booting screen with the green bar for around 0.2
second then back to the atd , now /tmp/x.log shows

# RUN INIT: /usr/bin/enlightenment_init
'/usr/share/enlightenment/data/init/asu_init.edj' '4' '0' 'Enlightenment'
'0.16.999.050'

# waiting for X server to shut down E17 INIT: XINERAMA CHOSEN: [0],
480x640+0+0
# FreeFontPath: FPE built-ins refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

where can i go from here!?

another thing worth mentioning is that couple of days ago the thing stopped
at starting atd daemon:atd. again but Xglamo wasn't starting, i went to
check /usr/bin/Xglamo to find that it's 0 bytes!, i just scp a new one from
a 2008.12.tar.gz back to freerunner and it worked again.

I think this can be distro related as I've never had issues, even with

When you say 'backup', if you mean you were backing up the existing

Flashing the FR should only take ~10min. The u-boot timeout only applies

It was mostly the version of dfu-util that I was using, I installed it from

After upgrading that it seems I just need to wait a couple of seconds after
connecting the usb cable before running dfu-util, by doing that it works on

Re: SHR first impression : it's slow ?

2009-02-23 Thread Joel Newkirk
For those looking for the 'Advanced' settings: Grab and drag the row
of icons at the top from right to left and you should find, altogether:
Display
Look
Screen
Input
Language
Settings
Advanced
Extensions

AFAIK the arrows don't even work, when you tap the right-hand arrow you
are effectively clicking on the edge of the 'Input' icon.

BTW - the speed with which those icons scroll is how fast the main
Illume icons /should/ be able to be dragged, but with the Illume theme
as it currently stands (with FSO M5 and SHR at least) each 'desktop'
icon is adorned with multiple transparent PNG files layered to create
pretty buttons, and scrolling becomes dramatically slower than what you
are probably familiar with from the base ASU theme with 2008.x.

I (and surely others) am working on a leaner, faster theme - any
eye-candy that distinctly impacts the user experience should NOT be

nice to hear that
ugly and fast beats pretty and damn slow any day for me

now and it didn't work when I last tried it.

I use the NOR (AUX + Power) boot to boot the NAND and Qi to boot the
SD card. Useful workaround for people that can't get the timing right

Actually, that's what I do presently :)

The only problem I see with that is, any u-boot facilities that have
been added since are gone. How this effects operation I'm unsure. I'm
yet to have any real issues with using it this way.

I think power management and other tweaks may be effected but it has yet

Not Ubuntu but NetworkManager in general. As said on the wiki page,
one needs to nail down the MAC address for NM to dish out the same IP.

I use the following on many boxes, so the version numbers can be off a
 bit.

 NetworkManager-0.7.0-1.git20090102.fc10.i386

 create /usr/local/sbin/freerunner-usb-add.sh
 create /etc/udev/rules.d/80-freerunner.rules
 cd /etc/udev/rules.d/
 chcon --reference=40-multipath.rules 80-freerunner.rules
 chmod 744 freerunner-usb-add.sh
 udevcontrol --reload_rules

Depending on how your firewall is set up, you may or may not have to
 issue the following

 iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.0/24
 iptables -I FORWARD 1 -s 192.168.0.202 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -I INPUT 1 -s 192.168.0.202 -j ACCEPT
 echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

 RU

 PCFE

Thanks. With the current Ubuntu there have been problems where NM tries
to take control of usb0 despite being told not to, or refuses to follow
manual setting within its own GUI, but also it has had problems where it
tries to point default route out usb0, or brings eth0 down and back up,
or other odd behavior. Lately most of that seems fixed.

Re: [SHR-Unstable] Cannot get ophonekitd to use SIM

2009-02-23 Thread D. Gassen
Could it be that there's still some timing issue with ophonekitd?

I have updated ophonekitd to

 r...@om-gta02 ~ $ opkg list_installed ophonekitd
 ophonekitd - 0.0.1+gitr577+7e705882c099f353cf6ce535c222b7fee56b48b8-
 r15 -

which seems to be latest as of right now.

However, depending on my location it seems that ophonekitd succeeds to
register with the network or not. It finally seems to be able to
connect to the network since the network is displayed in the top bar
of illume and I can make calls with the dialer. But reading the SIM's
contacts and phone log failed and the contact list is empty and the
phone log app tends to crash.

In my apartment I seem to have a weak GSM signal and then ophonekitd
has the trouble described above.

In the office I have better reception and there ophonekitd behaves
nicely and I've got a working phone (including phonebook, etc.)

Here's the log of ophonekitd when it's failing:

 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: request_resource_callback()
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: call ogsmd_device_set_antenna_power()
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: sim_ready_status_callback(status=0)
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: ophonekitd_sim_ready_status_handler()
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: ophonekitd_sim_auth_status_handler()
** (process:1788): DEBUG: sim auth ready
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: power_up_antenna_callback()
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: register_to_network_callback()
** (process:1788): DEBUG: Registering to network failed: TODO
 org.freesmartphone.GSM.Device -2
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: ophonekitd_sim_ready_status_handler()
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: sim ready
 ** (process:1788): DEBUG: get_messagebook_info_callback()
** (process:1788): DEBUG: MessageBookInfo failed: Did not receive a
reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send
a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the
reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. dbus -2

Is it normal that it tries to register with the network and *then*
reports sim ready?

At the same time (I think just before the message Registering to
network failed) I get the following errors in frameworkd.log:

 2009.02.24 00:16:05 ogsmd.channel DEBUG

(I left out the lines with _readyToRead: watch timeout = None on
purpose for better readability)

The modem firmware should still be
gsm_ac_gp_fd_pu_em_cph_ds_vc_cal35_ri_36_amd8_ts0-moko10.m0.

 * The Digital Pioneer digitalpion...@gmail.com [090223 19:11]:
I thought it was ophonekitd's job to do stuff like that. What do I
 run? And
why on earth would I have to manually enable GSM on a phone? Heheheh
you don't... its exactly what ophonekitd does. We fixed some stuff in
the startup sequence of ophonekitd lately... you might want to try to
 update upgrade.
