On every openmoko distro like fso or shr the user is root with home /home/root/ those are iirc all oe based -- debian is an om distro too, and it does not use /home/root/ but /root/. gentoo does so to iirc. /tmp is a bad idea because its only tmpfs and deleted everytime it boots up. and that's worse than silent failing? but an other dir would be better, yes sure, but which directory is available everwhere and can be presumed to be r/w to the every user? ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: Multitouch on FR ... imho should be possible to mimic
Stefan Monnier wrote: FWIW, there's another source of info that might be used: jitter. When you have two fingers pressed, not only the reported position is more-or-less the middle point, but it's also jittery. So you could detect such jitter as a tell-tale of multitouch and then use the jitter itself (orientation and magnitude) as an indicator of the actual position of the fingers. Whether it would be sufficiently reliable to be used, I don't know. Unfortunately, the jitter has many interpretations. * The user is moving the fingers apart * The user is moving the fingers together * The user holds the finger still, but pressure varies You may be able to get a decent multitouch with one limitation - the first finger stay still. With that limitation, the first finger establish some base point (the point to rotate around, or the point that stand still when something is resized.) When the second finger comes down it does all the movement, and its location is at any time twice as far out from the base as the midpoint the FR actually register. Well, perhaps a bit less than twice as far out, as pressure probably is higher for the stationary finger. Buzz Issues - Last Questions, I promise
All, First thing I want to apologise for crossposting, I tried popsting this in the hardware section, then realised I was not a subscriber to that mailing list. Maybe that post will not go through, in which case it won't matter. Here we go. Speaking as a fanboy of the Freerunner and everything Openmoko does I can't help but be disheartened by the fact that the noise on my Neo is still preventing me from using it as a phone. Lately I've hardly used it at all, because it kind of feels like it will never be fixed and I get depressed when I look at it. Seeing as I have been offline for a bit regarding the freerunner I may have missed any new information about the fix, so in case I've got it all wrong please point me in the right direction. I've had it for more than half a year now, and the progress made on so many levels is great. I love the freedom and all the different distros. So two questions: 1. Will there ever be an official fix from Openmoko/Truebox/WhicheverSupplierYouBoughtItFrom. By fix I don't mean just instructions on how to do-it-yourself, but a route for non-soldering users to get the fix applied. If not, just say so, I don't want to wait and hope if there will be no change. 2. Has anyone in London applied this fix succesfully? I'd be willing to pay to get this sorted. I feel like one of those moaning idiots on the mailing lists that I usually hate, but I just need this clarified. ezuall -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Buzz-Issues---Last-Questions%2C-I-promise-tp2509041p2509041.html Sent from the Openmoko Community mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: Fennec Beta 1 Released
Al, Personally, I have never used bitbake, so I'm not sure what that is doing exactly. As for the autoconf question, mozilla requires autoconf2.13. You can specify the path to your autoconf2.13 either by exporting AUTOCONF=path in your environment or by specifying AUTOCONF=path in your mozconfig. See https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Linux_Build_Prerequisites for more details. Also, if you're interested, see the FAQ for why autoconf 2.5.x doesn't work. https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Mozilla_Build_FAQ -Brad On 3/20/2009 12:05 PM, Al Johnson wrote: On Friday 20 March 2009, Rui Miguel Silva Seabra wrote: You're oversimplifying a bit. Hi Chris, what kernel are you using ? On 2.6.28/29 (not sure about older ones) there is the usb bug (OM ticket 2254) that does not detect when usb disconnects. So once connected trough usb, the interface stays 'up', even if no longer connected, and the fr keeps trying to route packets trough it. This is causing other media (wifi, GPRS) not to work. A simple workaround is to issue an 'ifdown usb0' in a terminal. Cheers, Filip. On Fri, 20 Mar 2009 19:33:02 +0100, xChris ch...@c-64.mobi wrote: Is wifi working? no way for me! What are your thoughts? Do you want any specific improvements or changes? Hi there! I played with it when it was new. I was able to make some noise with it back then but now because of this request I decided to try it again to be able to tell you some experiences. 1) Rename it. Yeah, I know it's nice to provoke people etc but to me it just sounds stupid. And I know there's an acronym behind it and I know there are people who like the name but.. well, it's your choice and you must decide if you figure out if it makes people use the app more or less. Less, if you're asking me. MusicMachine or similar would a) describe the app better b) provoke less. Just my opinion. 2) Add an icon in .ipk package. I installed to 2008.12+Kustomized, no icon was shown. 3) First run I get a message that Enlightenment was not able to run 'satan -u k'.. Tried from the command line: r...@om-gta02:~# DISPLAY=:0 satan -u k satan: error while loading shared libraries: libltdl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Installing 'libltdl3' from the repositories solved this - add libltdl3 as depending package in the .ipk 4) Started the app. It's a mess.. sorry.. I'd like to be able to do something with an app when I start it with no prior knowledge of it. I know Blender might not allow me to do this but I'd like your app to do it. From the previous experiences I know that you have to load some sounds/sound fonts/something. Went to Ld/Sv -tab (read the manual the first time I used it) but - I have no idea where to try to find the sound fonts required. Maybe it should default to the dir where they're installed? This is when I closed it. No sound this time. Maybe some introduction window or something that the user can disable after reading it? r -- | risto h. kurppa | risto at kurppa dot fi | http://risto.kurppa.fi ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

No, a sane fallback would be to signal an error and exit. that's no fallback -- that's an exit strategy. For a problem detected at startup, it's much better than a bogus fallback.
