Re: Home automation with Open moko

Well, that is the only advantage isn't it. Range. Anything else would
be easier via Wifi as you do not need to connect anything extra to the
Freerunner. If I really need that hot bath ready I can always use the
system via GPRS link.

Sorry dude. Seems like an interesting system you've got there but I
doubt there's lot of a market behind it.

 Openmoko devices
 Battery questions and answers

NB: Some of the described behaviour depends on the kernel, the
relevant code was pushed on 02 Aug to andy-tracking

 Hardware capabilities

Q: What batteries can be used with gta01 and gta02?
 A: Original OM gta01, gta02, Nokia BL-5C, BL-6C and compatibles.

Q: Do other BL-5/6C compatible batteries fit?
A: If the battery is thicker than BL-6C, you won't be able to close
 the back cover.

Q: What is the difference between all those types?
 A:

 Capacity:
 gta01, gta02- 1200 mAh
 BL-5C old (newer/new) - 850 (970/1050) mAh
 BL-6C - 1150 mAh

 Temperature control:
 gta01, BL-5C, BL-6C - thermistor
 gta02 - bq27000

 Special features:
gta02 - accurate and sophisticated reporting of capacity,
time_to_full, time_to_empty, temperature and battery current during
both charge and discharge thanks to bq27000 (aka Coloumb Counter)

Q: What are hardware capabilities of gta01 and gta02 with regard to
 battery management?
 A:

gta01: charging all battery types, measuring temperature with
battery-integrated thermistor (currently charging and measuring
temperature for non-gta01 batteries doesn't work due to the kernel
driver issues but it's software limitation), measuring battery output
voltage, very inaccurate and noisy measuring of battery current

gta02: charging all battery types, measuring battery output voltage,
 communicating with bq27000

 Q: Can nokia phones use/charge gta01/gta02 batteries?
A: gta01 and gta02 batteries will fit wherever BL-6C fits but they
can't be charged in nokia phones unless you isolate the middle pin
from the battery and connect a resistor of ~50k (actual measured value
on a cold (25C) battery is 75k, on a slightly warm battery - 82k) from
it to the ground (to fake a thermistor presence).

 Q: Can third-party chargers charge gta01/gta02 batteries?
A: The good ones will most probably require the same trick needed
for nokia phones. More cheaper ones are more likely to ignore
 thermistor absence.

Q: I have several compatible batteries. What are the storage
 requirements for them?
A: Keep in a dry cool place charged to no more than 75%.

 Safety issues

Q: Do OM devices control temperature to stop charging if the battery
 gets too hot?
A: No (probably gta01 does, need to check).

 Q: Isn't it dangerous?
A: No, since all batteries (not raw cells!) have an integrated
 protection circuits.

Q: Can i use that fancy 2800 mAh BL-5C-compatible battery i saw on
 ebay?
A: Unless you want an explosion in your pocket i wouldn't recommend
using any battery that is not produced by a reputable vendor and
widely tested. And even reputable vendors make mistakes, nokia once
had to recall 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita (

 http://batteryreplacement.nokia.com/batteryreplacement/en/advisory-2007.html
 ).

Q: You say that BL-5C is compatible with my gta02. Does that mean i
can use that BL-5C-compatible bat i bought for a buck from a bum?
 A: You bet, go ahead.

 Charging

Q: My battery charges to 100% but then charging stops and the battery
 keeps discharging, wtf?
A: LiIon batteries don't like to be kept fully charged, so the charger
stops as soon as charging current becomes less than threshold. If you
have GSM on it will discharge the battery.

Q: But why doesn't it ever stop charging on my device?
A: The GSM modem is connected directly to the battery terminals so if
it's active, charger will think it's still charging the battery and
won't turn off unless GSM becomes inactive. The default threshold is
about 16mA, the latest Qi increases the threshold to ~32mA.

Is this true for gta02 deevices only or it's the same for gta01?

Q: Does it mean if i leave my phone plugged it will eventually fully
 discharge the battery?
A: On gta02 the charger will restart the charge automatically once the
battery voltage reaches ~4V which corresponds to ~76%. Not sure about
 gta01, requires more investigation. :-/

Q: Ok, how to make sure my battery is fully charged before a long
 trip?
A: Replug the charger, it will trigger charging no matter what the
 current capacity is.

Q: My power/aux LED indicates charging/discharging/whatever, what does
that mean (aka why it's still blue even after i unplugged the
 charger)?
A: Ask FSO guys about it, some of them think that the user shouldn't
really know what's happening and therefore they do some special
mangling of status sysfs node before presenting it to the user. If
you want to make a decent bugreport please add clear steps to
 reproduce and

SHR will use it, but you have to restart some services (or reboot) to turn
BT on or off. Other than that, it works. Look at the 'Manually Using
 Bluetooth' wiki page.

In fact you can activate bluetooth either via the settings app, or via dbus
:

dbus-send --system --dest=org.freesmartphone.odeviced --type=method_call
--print-reply /org/freesmartphone/Device/PowerControl/Bluetooth
org.freesmartphone.Device.PowerControl.SetPower int32:1

Then if you have paired your headset, you should only need to power it up.

restarting the framework is needed only if you change the bt-headset-enabled
setting (and don't forget to power up the antenna from the settings/phone
app if you restart the service instead of rebooting).

The Digital Pioneer wrote:

And you've set the bt-headset-address and bt-headset-enabled variables,

It seems that if you have headset-enabled, you can't use your headset to
play music via intone (i've been facing the issue this morning). Did i do
something wrong?

[SHR-U] Almost there....

2009-08-03 Thread Poul Bondo
Using SHR-unstable 20090721 as daily phone.

I have used the Openmoko as a portable computer for the past 3/4 of a
year, but not as a phone. Primarily because I need my phone to be
stable. However for the past week (during my holidays) I have used the
FreeRunner as my primary phone.

So what do I basically need from my phone. What is the minimal feature
set that will make the phone usable.

1. Voice phone (incoming and outgoing phone calls)
2. Receive and send SMS
3. Phonebook with names and numbers (I can't remember phone numbers)
4. Two days of battery life, i.e. Suspend Resume (both manually and
automatically)
5. Plug in and remove power cable
6. Clock
7. Phone log (missed calls / SMS)

That is all I really need. There are a lot of other nice to have
features, but they are not important (at the moment).

SHR unstable provides all these features and a lot of other features.
However it is not stable. The following is a list of my observations
from the first week of usage (no power attached in all scenarios below).

1. After I have made a phone call (incoming or outgoing) I need to look
into if I believe the phone is still working. Ie. can I receive another
call. I don't know exactly what happens, but quite often the phone is
broken. Typical symptoms that something is wrong is that the phone
will not auto suspend. Settings / Power / Auto suspend will not slide to
On. When the phone enters this state it cannot receive any more phone
calls / SMS. The solution to this is typically a power off/on. In this
state it also does not do a proper logout / shutdown. But pressing the
power button for some 8-10 seconds will shutdown.

2. No sound on phone calls. In some cases there is no sound on phone
calls, i.e. no ring tone (but vibrator ok) and no audio on the voice
call. Making outgoing calls and suspend/resume does not help. However on
at least one occasion it did help to plug in USB power.

3. Manual resume to check the clock but not touching the touch screen.
The phone will typically not auto suspend again, unless I touch the
touch screen.

4. The ring tone audio on incoming call is delayed several seconds. I.e.
the vibrator starts several seconds before the ring tone. Also the ring
tone will only stop several seconds after pressing accept call.

5. Removing the power cable (usb) sometimes means that the phone does
not auto suspend.

6. Receive a missed SMS while suspended often means the phone will not
auto suspend again (however for missed phone calls it seems to be
working ok).

7. Phone log will open in multiple instances. If I receive multiple
missed calls, I will have several phonelogs open. If I look in the wrong
one, it will only report one missed call. If one instance is open while
receiving a new phone call it will not be updated.

I will look into if any of these are already reported in SHR trac.

Notice that this is a massive improvement over last time I tried (and
failed) to use it as a phone 3-4 month ago.

I have one week left of my holidays for testing. But as of yet I am
undecided if I will continue when I get back to work

Thanks for all your work!

/Poul

The downside is that there are not so many dumps available yet. I don't

 touch screen.
 6. Receive a missed SMS while suspended often means the phone will not
auto suspend again (however for missed phone calls it seems to be
 working ok).

Hmm... I thought it's already fixed. I'll test it more carefully.

 4. The ring tone audio on incoming call is delayed several seconds. I.e.
the vibrator starts several seconds before the ring tone. Also the ring
tone will only stop several seconds after pressing accept call.

Yup... If you're using mp3, ogg or sid tone, then try to use wav. It
should speed up it a little, but it still will be slow... We're
waiting for fsodeviced, it should provide nice gain in speed.

 5. Removing the power cable (usb) sometimes means that the phone does
 not auto suspend.

Some debug info?

 7. Phone log will open in multiple instances. If I receive multiple
missed calls, I will have several phonelogs open. If I look in the wrong
one, it will only report one missed call. If one instance is open while
receiving a new phone call it will not be updated.

a) Close notifier window instead of clicking on phonelog button. It
won't open phonelog ;P
b) This is kind of wontfix, as we're playing new UI infrastructure and
we'll write new GUI libraries. Notifier will also change.

Notice that this is a massive improvement over last time I tried (and
failed) to use it as a phone 3-4 month ago.

I'm using SHR for about half of year as my daily phone :)

Yes, but i would prefer to control such a grid by wifi or bluetooth,
without wireing/connecting any dongle to FR.

But bluetooth is of a limited range.Say you are in you car and coming
home and you want to get your heater up and running so that you can have
a hot bath. Now if you have an Xbee say 500 m or 1km you are from your
home you can switch it on and by the time you get there it will be hot.

Poor choice of example - if I had a heating system that needed such a trigger
it would take longer to get up to temperature than the travel time from 1km
away, even by foot. For long range control I would be looking at internet or
phone based systems like asterisk or CSD dialin connection.

There does seem to be a market for wireless touchscreen home remotes, many of
them very expensive. I doubt this market would accept a dongle - it just
wouldn't look cool enough. If you can build it into the FR, or recase it to
enclose the dongle, you may be able to sell into that market.

You probably won't find any overlap between that market and this list though -
we're by definition internet-centric and likely to build our own solution.
There may also be some resistance to ZigBee's GPL incompatibility and IP
policies.

I would like to add my 2 cents here;)

I didnt stopped working on paroli at all,
just my attention was distracted by some hobby project
(home-made electric bike) and I was on vacation in the
last 2 weeks (hence the late reply).

But I agree, what Mirko is doing, are the worst scenario of
every possible act, ie. stating he is working on paroli, but
his last real work on paroli was exactly two months ago on
 June 3, with commit 6b47ad3a17814105e7107dcf7cc30dc4f3584387.
In addition to this he is not responding to emails, especially
which contains programing questions regarding to paroli. (I know, because
I shoot 10-15 emails already to him in these 2 months).

I have read somewhere some years ago, how to best quit an
open source project, but I cant locate it anymore (nor on
the web nor in my computer). It addressed this very issue, how
to avoid this kind of frustrations.

I would like to suggest to Qi company (Mirko's bosses;), to
allow (better word: force) Mirko to work on Paroli one hour
per week. To answer questions, and integrate others' works.

There are many ongoing work, which needs to be integrated into
paroli. There are two branches by Dietrich, namely tacheles
and rebase. Where tacheles needs some very deep (tichy/paroli)
knowledge, to be able to integrate into paroli.
 Other seems mostly cleanup.
We should really need some kind of communication platform,
because I for example never met with Dietrich, but I
really like his works (on pyneo.org, I based my gps program
on his mappad work. It was he or josch)

So there are two more possible contributors: Dietrich and josch.
They need some attention, to not lost his interests in paroli.

I for example have many more or less working programs, which
needs some help to properly integrate into paroli. (I have shoot
an email like 4 days ago to Mirko, but no answer;)

 These are:
 - calculator app (already usable)
 - gps app, and I would like to develop some predefined gui for
it: walking, running, biking, driving, paragliding
The basics works, I need edje (.edc file) gui for more advanced
things like zoom in, out and panning;)
 - note taking app (almost working)
 - calendar app (I have some gui sketches)
 - some already done (or planned) gui improvements for paroli
 - I have some gui ideas, where I need consensus
from Mirko and Angus, one of them is putting topbar at the
bottom. Because the bottom is not really finger usable, so
why waste the valuable space at the top (just under
illume's topbar). And it makes little sense to have two
  topbars at the top.

Mirko: If you want to step back from paroli for some time (months),
please, please integrate people's work before it, and
       only leave after.

There are many things, where we really need you. Im not able to
help Dietrich integrate his dbus based multithreading programs.
I (for example) need some tichy help.

I think everybody got an idea about paroli status.

 Best regards,
  Laszlo

[SHR-U] On the road to perfection....

2009-08-03 Thread Poul Bondo
Drifting a little bit further down the road and wanting a not only
usable stable phone, but also a better basic phone, the following are
observations that I have made over the past week.

1. Contacts / Call button is placed in the same position as Active
call / Release button. This has made me make several re-calls. It would
help a lot to move one of them. If that didn't make any sense, then what
happens is that I press Contacts Call which will pop up Active call.
When ending the conversation the other party is faster than me so the
Active call is removed before my finger touch is registered. It is
therefore forwarded to the next window, which happens to be Contacts /
call :-)

2. A common scenario for every day usage is to put the phone in the
pocket. When receiving a call anything will happen when I drag the phone
out of the pocket. I am not sure what the right solution for this
problem is. However one possible solution would be to press the AUX
button for locking the phone and let it auto suspend in the pocket. On
incoming call it would be very nice to let the power button receive the
call. To discard the call first press AUX and then do your thing. Would
this be possible and does it make any sense ?

3. When receiving a SMS it is shown in full screen on top of another
full screen notifier window. This is quite annoying while in a phone
conversation. Suddenly we have 2 pop up windows on top of the active
call. Thus if I want to end the current call I have to be aware of and
remove 2 windows before I can perform the action that I want. Also as an
extra benefit the other part of the phone conversation will clearly hear
my SMS ring tone (that is a minor issue).

Thanks

/Poul

Re: om2009/paroli status

2009-08-03 Thread Mirko Lindner

Hi,

I am still alive and by no means agree that I am not doing anything.

I would agree that I am not coding right now. I am in active contact
with the pyneo crew, met with them in Hamburg and talked with fgau of
epydial how to get the apps into paroli. MDT of pyneo who has started
2 branches has taken over the part of doing maintenance on paroli's
core (formerly tichy) and this is still the plan.

Adding features to paroli right now has been opted against as Angus
and I still hope to be able to release Om2009. This requires bug-
fixing not new features.

I am also collaborating with Mirko from OpenWrt to get paroli fully
supported on this platform as well.

So nobody here has any news from Mirko ? Neither QI-Hardware ?

Not on the mailinglists I admit, but I am online on irc regularly
these days. Certainly less than during OM times and maybe difficult
to catch due to changing nick names.

I really like Paroli and would love to see this effort congratulate
for example by being integrated into SHR too... but if the maintainer

your patches ? a continue with welcomed contrib ?

I think a fork would be the worst case scenario. Laszlo also doesn't
need to fork, if adding new features is desperately needed how about
a branch? Certainly better than splitting the few resources that go
into a project.

I take part of the blame as I am heavily involved with Qi Hardware at
the moment and also do like to socialize and enjoy the sun every now
and again. I see a future for paroli and am interested in and working
for a revival of a python based multi-purpose device UI.

 Hi!

After some serious changes in the dump format that will hopefully speed
up the title search (aside from cleaning the dump a bit) and other
changes in the software, evopedia version 0.2 is ready for testing.

Evopedia is a Wikipedia reader for offline use. Features include:

 - live title search
 - search for geographically near articles
 - images are included when there is a connection to the internet

midori is the default browser used for displaying the html pages, if you
don't like it, change it in /usr/bin/evopedia_gui.sh.

At the moment, there is only a dump of the German Wikipedia for evopedia
0.2 but others are being generated.

 Download links:
 software: http://www.reitwiessner.de/openmoko/evopedia_0.2_any.ipk

 German Wikipedia dump:
 http://vitels.cs.uni-tuebingen.de/dumps/de/wikipedia.squashfs

Please help improving the software by testing it and ask for languages
 to create dumps for.

 Kind regards,
 Christian

I was wondering when someone brings this up :-). Actually I don't like the
idea of poping up the phone window when the user is doing something. I have
a plan to show a little xshape gadget on the bottom of the screen on
incoming call or sms. On call it would probably show accept/reject/mute
buttons, the first one additonally bringing up the phone window on click.
On sms it would display the content in a one line pager style, and have
 show/hide message buttons.

That sounds much better than popping up the phone window. Remember to make

when i select the corresponding items in the pisi gui, and hit start,
it reports 'Configuring (0%)', but does nothing

i'm guessing i've stuffed up the config for gcalendar, but can't see

on shr-u, make sure you have pisi and dates installed. you have to run

This is it. Btw the calendar sync in pisi doesn't have conflict mode
settings so if you reinstall your distro (like i did now) and your
appointments are in google only, they will get erased...fortunately
there is a backup in the .pisi dir :)

If this is the same case for you (make sure this really is the issue

look into if I believe the phone is still working. Ie. can I receive
another call. I don't know exactly what happens, but quite often the
phone is broken. Typical symptoms that something is wrong is that
the phone will not auto suspend. Settings / Power / Auto suspend
will not slide to On. When the phone enters this state it cannot
receive any more phone calls / SMS. The solution to this is
typically a power off/on. In this state it also does not do a proper
logout / shutdown. But pressing the power button for some 8-10
 seconds will shutdown.

There is newer version of ophonekitd which fixed most of phone
functionality crashes.

is it available somewhere? last commit to ophonekitd was two
months ago...
cheers

Petr

Answering to myself here: When I charged the battery capacity
increased steadily but when it reached 67% it suddenly jumped to 100%
in one minute. I think this concludes that the capacity reported by
 Linux is not always correct.

Where exactly is this figure from? Are you looking at the battery monitor
sysfs entry, or something that gets the incorrect figure from hal?

Mokoconnect/connman not working like it use to?

2009-08-03 Thread Adam Jimerson
I started using mokoconnet after seeing it in opkg.org and saw that it was
being considered to replace mofi in the SHR unstable image. Back then
mokoconnect was working flawlessly (other than needed to restart connmand when
I reboot the phone) when nothing nothing else would work because of the wifi
kernel bug. Now I am using the version that is is the SHR feeds doesn't work
like it use to, this version has trouble finding the AP for the profile, it
has to force a 30 second scan for the AP then if it can find it then it times
out waiting for DHCP. When it does connect and decided to work it doesn't
reconnect after a resume like the old version did.
