Re: gta02 as gps/navigator (in 2016)
Thanks for the replies. Well it would be nice to use gsm as well... I was thinking about using it also as anti-theft (gps+accel+sms). I remember having a lot of problems of data corruption on the sd card with shr (which was my favourite at the time), that I think might be a serious show-stopper. Just read the instructions here http://code.google.com/p/android-on-freerunner/wiki/GetIt, here pasted: Partition and format the SD card For Android to work properly the Micro SD Card in your FreeRunner needs to have 2 primary partitions. The first needs to be a VFAT/MSDOS (16 or 32) partition which is used is mounted as '/sdcard', this is used as a storage area (for pictures, movies, music, etc). The second is an ext3 partition which Android mounts as '/data', this is where it stores settings, caches, etc. Experience has shown that sizing these at a ratio of 3 to 1 works best. So if you have a 4GB card make a 3GB vfat partition and a 1GB ext3 partion. Re: Status GTA04 GroupTour
Just my point of view: I think the price is the problem. To be less brief I'll explain MY situation: I'm a student, I'm very interested in GTA04 because I think it's a tool that can help me in learning how to write code for embedded stuff in an open environment but I don't have a pay or some regular income. Therefore for me GTA04 is a dream :D I read all the previous mails, I have a GTA02 (it was the gift for my bachelor...), so I know why the price is around 450€ ... but for me is really too much. just my small and personal 2 cents d On Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 11:50 AM, Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller h...@goldelico.com wrote: Hi all, that status of the GTA04 mass market group tour http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=GTA04%20Group%20Tour is that we have: * passed half time yesterday * first early bird batch is sold out * but still only 16% preorders (56 units) * we have approx. 6 weeks left to fill the remaining gap of 84 % So I would say that we are still far away from becoming successful. If I read that over 2 Million new Android units have been activated over the Christmas holidays [1] and 4 Million iOS devices just on Christmas day [2], I can't believe that we do not find 350 potential buyers in 60 days... Well, we don't have a real mass market device and I think we should not even pretend to have one, in this phase. Because we are then compared to the 100 EUR Huawei Android/UMTS units where one has to suspect that the workers in China are being ripped off... What do you think should we do to make this group tour a success? * extend the subscription timeframe until we reach 100%? * ask for/collect donations to extend the early bird rebates? Some sort of sponsorship by community members for community members who can't afford a new GTA04 immediately? * have more resellers or buying groups to order batches of 10 units? * talk more about the benefits and special features one can only find in a GTA04 and nowhere else? * subsidize GTA04 boards by combining them with a UMTS contract? * offer to pay only part of the price by end of the subscription time frame so that we can already buy the expensive and difficult to source components, but postpone production individually until the remaining payments arrive? (i.e. pay 200 EUR until 10th Feb and the remainder until May) More ideas are welcome! But please keep in mind that we can't develop something completely new until February and components cost what they cost... The simpler the idea the better! And, there may be ideas which are too big for a single community member, but may become feasible if we all work together, contributing many small pieces. Re: MCNavi 0.3.1 released
Hi Mike, I have now some time to try to build some maps... but it's not clear to me how should I set up mysql: In new version the convertor uses MySQL database to store the data. Previously it loaded all data to memory, so no large maps could be created. The connection to MySQL is done on local host, user and password is osm, database is osm, so create corresponding schema and user account in MySQL. In future releases it could be possible to change it via command line parameters. This is still beta, not all is done and some functionality may not work as expected. Currently I'm using it actively in car and on bike and it works quite good fro me. Currently only map of Czech republic can be downloaded, next version will add turn restrictions and (hope) stabilize map format for all 0.3.x versions. After that, more countries will be available for download (or on demand). The rtc is meant to be powered by the main battery during suspend, so the backup battery shouldn't have any effect, hence the belief that it's a software bug. ffalarms (via fso) is supposed to set the rtc to generate an interrupt to wake the phone at the specified time if necessary. It is possible the rtc isn't being set, or that ffalarms isn't being called on wake among other things. Does the phone wake but not sound the alarm? Mcnavi maps and ipk
Hi guys, after the release of mcnavi - in which we're all really interested - i tought that it may be useful to share osm processed maps for mcnavi (since it took me some hour and some GBs to convert whole italy). So I made a project on sourceforge to collect the maps: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mcnavimaps/files/ (I had no idea how to share huge files in a good-fashioned way.) There you can find right now Italy and Belgium maps (thanks to Luca). If you're interested in sharing your maps contact me. I plan to release at least Italy every month. Now the second part... is there someone interested in building ipk packages of mcnavi : ? And obviously share his packages :P I have no experience on that... thanks d ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

This is somewhat experimental. Basically you define categories in the application and assign a category to any application. The application creates desktop launchers which will rename any managed .desktop files in /usr/share/applications to a different extention if they are not in the desired category. One problem with this application is that it does create quite a few .desktop files of its own and they do clutter the place up. The category icons could be put into categories of their own but that would make navigating slower. Please reply with any comments, complaints and feature requests. One thought I had after getting the application to work on the phone is that I could reduce the number of icons by using the GUI application to switch categories. Doing it that way would be slower and require more finger presses, but it would be tidier. -- Michael Smith +61 416 062 898 http://glitch.tl ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: Now someone REALLY has to help me!!
To make it easy ina straight forward: I suggest to you to install SHR on sd card. To do this you need: - a microSD card - at least one partition on that card (ext2 ext3). If you buy a musd card just for shr it would be easier just to not messup your current musd that has some android files on (for sure). - download the tar.gz version of testing of shr (if you prefere that one...) - mount on your pc the musd is easier thatn everything and extract on the musd the tar.gz - put the musd in your fr, then press aux button plus power button to enter uboot menu, there with aux button you can select start from micro sd card and press power to boot... that's probably all you need (afair) d On Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 2:10 PM, Märta hagwall...@hotmail.com wrote: Ok, I got a NeoFreerunner this christmas, and I got it delivered with Android pre-installed, and ever since I got it I've been struggling to install SHR as OS onto the internal memory, WITHOUT SUCCESS. Quite nice speedups are coming: http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/openmoko-kernel/2010-January/010811.html (performance testing by Gennady Kupava) Apparently, and unfortunately, no-one had really questioned Om Inc:s (who mainly did the kernel work back in the days of the still mostly used 2.6.29) choices of kernel configuration. Disabling kernel debug features and pre-empt has resulted eg. these kind of improvements (from IRC, #openmoko-fi): - boot time 68.5% of original - apt-cache search nano 20s - 14.8s - emacs -f kill-emacs 3.8s - 2.2s These configuration changes are not yet in andy-tracking (the 2.6.29 kernel still being used in most distros), I don't know what's the situation in the new om-2.6.32 branch. Together with the quite recent commit from Thomas White that doubled theoretical glamo speeds (in practice at least 20% in general), I feel that Neo FreeRunner is not anymore terribly slow, but only slow by today's standards, which is quite an improvement. Especially after having been used to the terribly slow general behavior ;) Please tell if some distro happened to have those disabled already, and if someone knew about these speedups via the options already - and please arrange a commit to git.openmoko.org next time! Anyway, this all goes to show that in a project with limited resources like Openmoko, especially now that it's completely in the hands of the community when it comes to Neo FreeRunner development, you have to have the courage to question anything suspicious etc. you are seeing, not trusting that someone has actually optimized something to the extent assumed. If you want to have a quick grab of the new kernel for Debian (or any distro that loads uImage from a file), I put my compilation of kernel and modules to http://users.tkk.fi/~tajyrink/moko/kernel_20100108_nodebug_nopreempt/ -Timo, wishing everyone a speedier new year ha ha, great work man!
