El 19/01/11 15:53, Radek Polak escribió:
 Hi,
i have released new experimental qtmoko images. They are now based on debian
squeeze and they have new (not finished) bluetooth support based on bluez4.

You can download and get more info here [1] [2].

 Here are changes since v31:

 - switched from debian lenny-squeeze
 - switched from bluez3-bluez4
 - fixed the bug in power manager (switching battery/lock/charger)
 - fixed USB device/host scripts for recent kernel
 - fixed default DNS
 - qx can install X server (xglamo/xorg-glamo)
 - X server is no longer in image
 - updated omhacks
 - fixed qvga in qmplayer/qmokoplayer
 - GPS is now really powered down when no one uses it
 - SD card image has also manual pages and other data
 - qemu build host for people who want to make release themselves (see [4])
 - added files and info for native compiling on ARM host

As far as i have tested - most of the stuff should be ok. But the release i
marked experimental, because the changes are big.

Bluetooth is still work in progress. There are still some functions not
implemented and bluetooth handsfree is bugged (see below). I was able it to
pair with new device, you can see available services, you can use obex for
sending/receiving/browsing, A2DP works just fine. I am not sure if works the
scenario when headset connects to Neo, but Neo-Headset direction works.
 There
is also bug that sometimes you cant see just paired device. Workaround is
 exit
bt settings and enter it back.

Bluetooth handset: after pairing and connecting i can always hear phone
ringing, i can use the buttons, but sound is there just randomly. For me it
 works somehing like this:

remove pairing with headset (if any).
 reboot phone
make normal call (no bluetooth headset involved)
 pair with headset
 connect handsfree
make call with bt headset - sound is ok

Once it starts working it's ok. It would be nice to reproduce this bug and
 fix
it. Any suggestions and findings out how to reproduce are very welcome.

As for QX - it can now install X server. You will need interenet connection.
The xorg install should be quite ok, Xglamo install is hack, you will have to
wait long time and it gives no output, but it should work. I'll fix it for
 next
 release.

Enjoy new version and bug reports are welcome (alhought i can start fixing
 them
not sooner then after 3 weeks). And also patches are welcome - i dont have
 single one for this release!!!

 Cheers

Sorry, this was an unexpected after-effect due to a kernel update
on one of our machines. The virtual machine running the wiki did not
come up after the reboot for some reason, and I was only checking the
mail / mailinglist service (a different vhost) after the
reboot and thought everything was up and running.

Please let me know if there are any other oddities,

The projects site is down as well.
 I tried :
 http://projects.openmoko.org/
 http://ffs.projects.openmoko.org/

Is that also related with those machines?

Yes, it is related. However, the reason for the downtime is the
fact that nobody is maintaining the projects.openmoko.org installation
anymore, and it is running a machine with such old OS + software that
for simple security reasons we had to take it down.

I wish there was a different choice, but we are out of options. There
 is nobody maintaining projects.openmoko.org :(

:-( Do you know if there is some backup of the projects web pages?
I would like to get the index.html and few files of my project.

I was hoping for a solution where we can keep all the old proejcts.om.org
content in read-only mode, but once again, who is supposed to do the
 sysadmin work required for that?

 I do not know.

Wel... I myself might not be able (have the time) to do so, but I'm part
of a hacklab and WE could do that. It's not really a lot of work, just
running some updates when necesary, right? If it's ok I'll email you
directly to set it up. I think it'll be a good thing to have if we think
about GTA04 is on its way to be produced...

El 21/12/10 09:33, Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller escribió:
 Dear all,

we are happy that we can make an announcement to the Free and
Open Hardware Community, right in time for X-mas and New Year:

We have finally tested, understood and patched the bugs of the
first GTA04 sample board (a.k.a. GTA04A2) and have successfully
started U-Boot. We can access the important peripherals like
display, touch screen, and MMC card.

So we are very confident that the already scheduled redesign
(GTA04A3) will work right from the beginning and boot Linux.

This looks like the start of the aera of new Openmoko devices.

 -- what it is --

For those who have not followed or are new to this project, the
 GTA04 is a OMAP3 based Smartphone Platform/Module [1]
that fits as a motherboard replacement into a Openmoko
Neo1973 or Freerunner case [2]. It is more or less the idea to
squeeze a BeagleBoard into a handheld and was started
by connecting a Openmoko Display to a BeagleBoard [3].

It will finally come with UMTS (HSPA), GPS, WLAN, Bluetooth,
Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Altimeter, Compass, FM and an
optional camera. An expansion B2B-connector allows to
base a custom design on this module.

A demo video of the GTA04A2 controlling the display and
blinking the illuminated buttons is here [4]. A brief
project description is [5]. Please excuse the low quality of
the pictures, since our small team has so far focussed on
 hardware and software.

The difference to off-the-shelf smartphones is that it will be
well documented (CC-BY-SA) and schematics will be included
in the spirit of the original Openmoko devices so that you can
access all the nice peripherals we have designed into it.
And through the expansion connectors you can also use
it as a module in your design.

And, it is a community project. Everyone is welcome to
 contribute.

The driving force behind this project is Golden Delicious
Computers (www.goldelico.com), a specialist for embedded
hard-, firm- and software development located in Oberhaching
 near Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

 -- next steps --

A closed and safe process would be that we silently redesign
the board (i.e. develop a GTA04A3), order some sample
boards and test them. If everything finally works, we would
order components and sit there and wait for them to arrive.

Then, we would announce generaly availability in big ads in
 NYT and FAZ.

In this mode, you may deduce, that you will not be able to get
a GTA04 earlier than Summer next year if we don't run out of
 money before.

 -- early adopter program --

Therefore, we have thought hat we offer an early adoper
program to the benefit of everybody.

The idea is that you can order a GTA04A3 immediately. At
a fixed price (280 EUR). And we take the risk that prices of
components will change. You only take the risk that we may
need more time to get the components and have to spin
 another PCB.

Using your money, we will order the core components with
a long lead time (OMAP, Memory, UMTS module) as soon
as possible - and early enough before the GTA04A3 design
 is finished.

This makes sure that we have enough components for the
first batch to be produced. And we will not spend the money
for anything else so that you could even visit us to see your
 chips... But please don't touch.

Once, the GTA04A3 boards arrive, we will test some of them
and if everything looks ok, we will produce your early
adopter devices. Only in the case that the A3 board has another
serious flaw, we will have to design a GTA04A4 board first.

This all speeds up the process dramatically so that we currently
estimate delivery of the first units by March 2011.

The price has been set very low so that it just covers component
and production cost at a reduced feature set (there are not all
peripherals installed but UMTS and GPS will be). It might be
possible to retrofit some of them.

Please note that it does *not* include the LCD module, case and
battery, because it is a motherboard-replacement to existing
 Openmoko units (Freerunner and Neo1973).

And, we can't specify yet which version of the OMAP3
we will get (600/720/1000 MHz) and how big the RAM/NAND
flash will be. But expect something similar to the BeagleBoard.

Please note that we also have chosen to switch from a GTM501
UMTS module to a GTM601 which has even better performance
 (HSPA+).

Ahh sorry, this is my bad. I was doing the image in haste and forgot to copy
the kernel in /boot. So you can try:

 - some older release (v26 is 100% ok but still with old 2.6.29 kernel)
 - download uImage-v30.bin to /boot and rename it to uImage-GTA02.bin + in the
 same folder do:

 echo console=tty0 loglevel=3 rootwait append-GTA02

Again sorry for troubles, i didnt have much time for qtmoko in past weeks,

it should be better now. I hope i'll do new release soon. v30 has kernel with
KMS patches which are probably causing SD card corruption so new release will

Hi there!

I've using SHR on my Neo for a year now without upgrading or tuning it.
It just work from the begining and I only needed gps an gsm to be happy.
Eventhough it start failing like a month ago and I want to try QtMoko.

SHR is on nand, so I want to try qtmoko on the microsdcard, but
instructions here[1] for doing so doesn't work, but they seem to be too
easy, so I think I'm not doing it wrong and I'm looking for help.

Step 1:
Flash qi: worked.
Step2:
create an ext3 filesystem on the microSD: worked
Step3:
Untar qtmoko on the microSD: worked
Step 4:
Turn Neo on with the microSD in it so it boots qtmoko: fail

I think the qtmoko-debian-v30.tar.gz comes without a kernel but
instructions says nothing about getting a kernel from somewhere else.

Thanks in advance.

others have made them by bending sheet plastics. There are photos in the

The safe mount is the easy part. The hard part is the shade to make it

2010-04-16 Thread Kosa
I ain't no expert on this, but since iPad is being a succesful mobil
device, we could give a chance for a BIGGER Freerunner. Of course iPad
won't sell as many pices as the iPhone has, but 400k seems good for a
start. There's a huge market for the big touchscreen devices.

What about trying to do some changes here and there to put a bigger
screen (and a much bigger battery) on it. Most common linux apps would
fit on that. Debian works great on the FR right know, and a bigger
screen might be a killer spec 'couse almost every app would run with no
changes needed.

As I said, I ain't no expert, but you take glamo off, fix #1024, get a
bigger screen and battery and leave everithing else as it is and you
have a tremendous chance of succes. I would just add stereo speakers :p
 as in Neo 1973

AFAIK tangogps is THE killer app on the Freerunner, and it would be
great to have a bigger screen for a gps device. It could even fit as a
co-pilot for the car, as gps, phone, music, movies news player. It
won't fit on the bike, but I would have his little brother for that. :)

We might face the 3g problem, but AFAIR just one of the 3 iPad models
includes 3g, so it is not a most. Not even for GTA03 nor GTA02-Core

I guess a bigger device is easier to build BTW.

Just a thought.

if it's hard to communicate - you don't have a sales point.

Yup, that's why I wouldn't belabour that angle for now. Whether and
when the time for selling on open software alone will come depends
on how constrained people feel with the non-open choices, and how
 many indirect benefits they get.

For now, I'll be happy with the niche of project customers who need
to tweak the hardware or who already understand why they cannot
 afford a closed system.

That said, such a phone wouldn't have to be free from appeal to the
mass market. It should definitely be as attractive as possible, but
 within reason.

sure - but it seems those project customers want to feed off a stable supply
 line

Stability is indeed crucial. I hope to be able to compensate with
flexibility what we lack in sheer momentum. E.g., if you get, say,
Motorola to make a design for you, and then Motorola decides to
shut down or sell off that business unit, then you're left with
pretty much nothing, no matter what your contracts say.

With an open design, no mattern what happens with the makers of it,
you still have the design - down to the last detail - and most of
the information needed to produce it. You may still fail to recover
from a breakdown in your supply, but your chances are vastly better.

Also, since the supply is likely to be spread over multiple
companies and individuals (who, in the Open world, enjoy a great
deal of mobility) catastrophic failures that wipe out everything
 are less likely.

Now, it remains to be seen whether prospective project customers
will agree with these arguments or whether they prefer to stick
with the traditional view and try to partner with companies that
 are too big to fail.

In terms of numbers, I think cost levels out pretty well already
at only a few kunits. If you're competing on the last 5%, you're
 already in the wrong game.

i know that to you, or to many
freedom advocates all this fancy eyecandy, sexy design, high end components
 etc. seems all irrelevant

Heh, yet here I am, still using my sleek little Samsung X-830 as
my daily phone, while keeping the ugly pucks in the lab :)

The thing with bleeding edge components is that they cost you a
lot (in various ways) at very little gain. Yes, you may get that
extra push for today's fashionable effect, but by the time you
hit the market, fashion will have changed. Better find your own
style that doesn't come from the manuals of the Gigahertz war :-)

Re: Newbie - Installing SHR on FreeRunner

2009-12-05 Thread Kosa
Jörg König escribió:
 Hi folks!

To make it short. Let me know if this is the wrong lists to post
following question. Perhaps you can point me to the right list?

It's not the wrong list, but shr has it's own user[1] an devel[2]
list, so it might be a good place to ask if you cant's find all the help
here.

I just recently bought a used FreeRunner. And now I want to play
around, especially I would like to try out different distributions. When
I got it, it had hackable:1 on it. Now I'm trying to install SHR on it.
I found a description for the installation process here:
 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SHR_User_Manual
It seems I didn't get it right. I downloaded the uSD card image. I was
able to write is on the uSD card and I also could boot the first time.
After a reboot, it stucks, saying:
 Unknown boot option `g-ether.host_addr=00:1F:11:01:0B:A3`: ignoring

what image are you using? I'm not an expert on shr but shr-testing[3] is
working fine for me so far (they just release it a couple of days ago,
and shr-unstable[4] from november 30th it fine as well. Just be careful
about using the right modules for the kernel.

I *think* I was supposed to unpack the kernel and the modules too.
Perhaps I also had to use `dfu-util` to write a new bootloader. However,
what I'm trying to say is that the documentation is not that clear to me
in that point. Since I want to use a uSD card, I concluded that I had to
download uImage-xx, `full-om-gta02.tar.gz` and finally the modules.

As you know you have to options: flash the kernel an image into the
internal flash of the neo, and the other one is use an micro sd card. I
myself prefer to do all the testing into the sd card an just flash a
light and not pimped distro into the phone. The only reason is that
untarng into the sd card is faster than flashing.

If you flash you use dfu-utils, and flash the kernel an the image, start
the neo, then log in via ssh, copy the modules an untar them into the /

If you use the sd card you create (at least) two partitions and put the
kernel (uImage.bin) in the first and the uncompresed image and modules
into the other one.

It normal if it takes longer to boot the first time, but it should take
1 2 minutes to boot the next time.

The big question mark I have is when to apply the modules? Shouldn't I
unpack them on the uSD card too? The documentation is mentioning to
unpack them on the FreeRunner. Isn't it then too late?

Noup, not too late. Modules are an optional thing to do. It should
boot without them most of the times.

For me it would be a good help to have a step by step tutorial with as
few ifs as possible. Can somebody give me a hint to such a tutorial?

The link you mentioned above and this[5] are supoosed to do that. Sorry
it didn't. I might take a look at that, but my english is no that good
and It could get a lot worse :p

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for any documentation! I know how it
feels to work on assumptions how things work.

I'm grateful for any hint! Looking forward to continue tweaking my
 little device. :-)

Good look! And please be patient, it's not going to be nice an soft, but
you can have a lot of fun, and you have a great thing in your hands :)

Cheers for any help that anybody has time to offer.

I have similar problems getting wifi to work on SHR-U. In my case I get
an address and configure the interface via dhcp, but can not establish
any traffic to the interface. In one case I could ping a host but the
 transit time was enormous.

The other thing I note from ifconfig is ridiculous RX and TX values,
almost 1TB on an interface I never have used. Looks to me like a bug
 somewhere in the driver code.

Check route -n, and are you trying wifi with usb plugged in? - depending
on the order you start/stop interfaces the default route could either be
wrong or missing. And which version of shr-u - latest, or older.

 BillK

 Hi BillK,
your response motivated me to look at the latest shr-u image as I
was using one from mid November. Thought I'd best update it even thought
I'm sort of happy with what I've got at present. I do want to use wifi
for a demo so off we go. I grabbed the shr-u kernel from 29th of
November and the lite rootfs from 30th. Bit of a WTF moment there when I
failed to find any wifi antenna setting in Settings/Connectivity where
I'm used to seeing it. Decided that I'd just enable the eth0 interface
with an ifup but get told that interface don't exist.

Maybe I leaped too far forward in time. Have you any recommendations as
to which version to use? I might go back a version and see how I get on.
Maybe I should be using the full root-fs but I only want the basics at
 present.

I did in the mean time discover coova-chilli for the first time. That
one slipped under my radar, like a good many other things. I'll go back
in time but if you've any advice on a good image let me know.

 Cheers

Shr teams just announced the release of a testing-image and it seems to
work fine. Mokoconnect is not working but I have been able to set up a
wifi connection to both wep (without password) and wpa-psk networks
using the termninal. Take a look at here:

I'll have my video up in a bit, an interview.

Here's the advance copy of my comments to the press.

During the last week Openmoko has had two great events. First the
Embedded System Conference, ESC) and second, the OpenExpo in Bern. Those
events could not have been more well timed for us because we had two
major announcements to make: a thrust into the embedded systems market
and the announcement of a new device, not a phone but an entirely new
open device.
The launch into the embedded systems market is a case of the market
finding the manufacturer. We designed the FreeRunner as an open phone.
After it launched we started to receive requests from customers we never
dreamed existed: Innovators who wanted to change the case or add in
additional hardware. People who wanted to resell the phone with their
software added. The collective creativity outside the company, dwarfed
the creativity within the company. Our customers truly are an army of
Davids. To seize this opportunity we decided to open up our CAD files,
and open up our schematics. That way these new-found markets can develop
for themselves products that we don’t have the resources to develop. So,
over the next few months you’ll see us make a more focused effort in
this market space. As a platform for embedded development, nothing
compares to the FreeRunner: Open schematics; Open CAD; Open hardware;
Open software.
At OpenExpo we had a keynote speech in the business track. This gave us
the opportunity to explain some of the change in focus we’ve made in the
past month. Our CEO Sean Moss-Pultz delivered the presentation and I’ll
take some space here to explain in a bit more detail the background
behind these exciting changes. Sean discussed three things:
1. Our successes.
2. Our mistakes.
3. Our challenges
It’s vitally important when addressing the challenges of the future to
assess and understand your past success. Openmoko launched its first
developer phone in July of 07 and the FreeRunner shipped in July of 08.
Sales tripled. Not only did we build a phone; we built a company and
distribution network in the process. We also helped others build their
own businesses around the FreeRunner. Our takeaway lessons were as
follows: Open Products can be successful in the marketplace; being Open
multiplies everyone’s business opportunities. For our mistakes we
identified these: Open Product design is very hard as there is a
tendency to make too many changes. Our culture is not authoritarian. We
also tended to view hardware with a “software” mentality, as something
that could be easily changed or patched.
Our challenge going forward is to seize the opportunity we see in the
embedded space and push forward the cause of open hardware. And we had
to make some choices about how to spend the balance of 2009. There were
essentially three projects going on inside OpenMoko: ongoing support of
FreeRunner; Development of a follow on phone, the GTA03; and development
of project “B”. From a resources standpoint we could pick any two. Given
the traction we see in the embedded space and given our passionate
commitment to current FreeRunner owners and developers it was easy to
pick that project. Nine months after launching FreeRunner with
tremendous support from the community the product is coming into its own
with a diverse set of distributions that run on it, from android to
debian. Then comes the choice between project “B” and the GTA03.
There were two paths:
A: Fulfill our promises on FreeRunner and launch GTA03
B: Fulfill our promises on FreeRunner and launch project B.
We will talk more about project B in the coming months, but these
salient facts guided our decisions:
1. GTA03 was in constant flux as a design.
2. GTA03 schedule was consequently always s

2009-02-13 Thread Kosa

I also have the 850 and the buzz doesn't appear to me but my friends
notice when i use that phone because i either echo or buzz,
 sometimes a
 nasty combination of both.

The same for me, I don't listen any buzz, but everyone say a lot of
bad-words about the noise! I guess I am loosing friends, hehehe.
For me, the buzz is absolutly strength signal related.
Here in my room, I hear a very very very low buzz, but
the other side complains about it. Well, not really,
they say there's a buzz only when I ask about it.

On the other hand, if I'm on the street, or at the roof,
and I ask, many people say they have never heard a
clearer cellphone call. I'm nox exagerating: that's
what they say.

Echo apears only if I turn up the volume. The other side
hears it, but I don't.

Feel free to argue either way on this idea but maybe it would be
beneficial to have a separate list for GTA01 and maybe GTA02/03 as well.
A place where people could talk about issues only related to a single
device or give updates on the status of things for that device.

I'm probably not alone in my email filters to move list emails into
folders GTA01, GTA02, GTA03 and GTA04 if they contain that text, which
isn't a very good solution to the problem.

What are your thoughts on it? or other possible solutions.

 Ben.

+1

GTA01 is not the same thing as GTA02, even if they have the
same case. I think GTA03 is not going to have the same case,
and I think it will certanly need it's own list. Now we know
Openmoko is not working on one, but two new products, which
I think would need their own list too.

Community's mailing list will still be full of all kind of topics and
devices, but separated mailinglists for those who don't want /
have the time to read tons of emails to stay up to date.

What if one of those products OM is working on is a tablet, or a
gps device? I don't think they would fit very well on the same
list with the Frerunner and 1973.

Cheers

Re: Ask Sean Moss-Pultz about community matters

2008-12-15 Thread Kosa
Hi there,

I first know from openmoko reading Harald's Welte blog [1] two years
ago, and
after some reading I thought Openmoko was a great project. Time past and
Harald quitted. He explain a llittle it about it in his blog but I was
too in love with
the idea of a free and open phone/pda and I kept reading about it. Some
time
later Openmoko hired the Rasterman and a little bit later he quitted
too. Now it's
been a while since Michel Siloh doesn't write.

I know you don't need/have to explan that, and I'm not really sure if
I'd like to know
what happened, but two of the best hackers are gone, and they could have
help a lot
more as full time OM developers.

Hum... not really a question. Sorry.

Thank you Sean an everyone on the OM tema for your time and effort.
Let's keep impacting the material world.

Hi all,

Ive just spent the day hacking on FBReader to make it work correctly
under OpenMoko (OM2008.*). Until now its been pretty much unusable due
to the GPE version of FBReader expecting you to be using a device that
has some physical buttons which then get bound to vital functions like
turning the page. The changes Ive made are as follows:

* Add scroll forward/backward buttons to the toolbar
* Add fullscreen mode button to the toolbar (doesnt have an icon
at the moment, its the third button from the right)
* Change fullscreen mode so that it doesnt hide the toolbar
(otherwise theres no way to get back from fullscreen mode)
* Switch to using the much prettier blue tango icons
* Make the line separation larger so the text doesnt overlap
* Reduce the font size
* Change the default colours to match openmokos colour scheme
better (and so its a little easier on the eyes)

And most importantly

* Make it so that tapping the sides of the screen turns the books
pages (left = backwards, right = forwards)

Heres a screenshot of what it used to look like:
http://blog.mikeasoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/fbreader-orig.png

And what it looks like with my patches:
http://blog.mikeasoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/fbreader-openmoko.png

To install it simply run:

opkg install http://mikeasoft.com/~mike/openmoko/enca_1.9-r3_armv4t.ipk
http://mikeasoft.com/~mike/openmoko/fbreader_0.8.2a-r6+elleopatches_om-gta02.ipk
(all on one line)

For those interested the patch can also be downloaded from
http://mikeasoft.com/~mike/openmoko/fbreader-openmoko.patch.

Bonus points for anyone who knows what book Im testing it with in the
screenshots (without googling) ;).

 Cheers,
  Mike.

  Kosa,

I can't understand how you took my mail to be a flame? (Apologies for
not changing the title - I've rectified that now).

What I was trying to do was to point out with a real example what Steve
was asking for - what would a community manager do to bring one more
very effective developer "into the fold" - e.g. working inside the
openmoko framework in a way that incrementally builds on existing
openmoko developer resources rather than needing to have packages that
are patched versions of packages in the existing openmoko source base
but due to not having commit privs end up being totally disconnected
from that source base, autobuilder and official feeds.

If the below 4 steps were done for every external developer who
announces a new tool, then we wouldn't need to have the discussion about
how opkg.org links to external feeds and ensures the security of
downloads, since everything would be coming from the official feeds and
built with the trusted openmoko autobuilder. And we'd have many more
application developers feeling empowered to port applications have their
work known and used by the maximum number of people.

Seriously dude, this is meant to help improve the openmoko community,
not flame about it.

 Hi!

After my previous blog post [1] about Openmoko 2007.2 distribution and
the Openmoko community I got some comments proving that like me, some
other people feel that the community is lost and uninformed. This post
is a follow up to the previous post and the comments I got.

I've understood that 2007.2 still ships with the phones. As soon as
one gets his new c00l Freerunner linux phone they need to flash the
phone with a new distro (2008.x or Debian, FDOM, SHR, Gentoo, Qtopia,
FSO.. [6]) since the software it ships with is obsolete. OK, so you
get your 2008.x there and find that it doesn't really do all the magic
and would like to report a bug.

 BUGS
I don't know how others feel but I really don't feel like reporting
bugs in the bug tracker [3]. OK, I'm running an unsupported distro
(2007.2) so there's one reason but I also feel that it's okay to post
kernel bugs only there, not anything that a normal user would see in
his GUI. Is this correct or just a feeling or misunderstanding?
Remember that all Freerunner owners and people here in the community
are not kernel developers. I don't even know how to save back traces
or hack the source code but I'm happy to report if something doesn't
work and then when someone more skillful finds what's wrong and
eventually fixes it, I'm again happy to try if the fix works for me.
For some reason I feel that there's no space in the community for
 users like me.

 DISTROS
So it's 2008.x now. No, wait.. there are FDOM [5] and SHR [2] around
that are not far from 2008.x. Is 2007.2 still developed and lead by
Openmoko or by the community? Do the community developers have access
to the files so that new releases can be made or is SHR the closest to
2007.2 you can get to? My feeling is that there was a lack of
information about why 2007.2 was forgotten and new 2008.x series was
started and that something weird is happening in the official distros
that creates a need for FDOM and SHR - why don't the developers feel
ok to contribute directly to 2007.x and 2008.x but 'fork' their own
 distros?

 INFORMATION
I think that what makes me feel lost is the lack

Re: 2.5mm or 3.5mm (to be?: sendind video trough 3.5mm jack)

2008-05-30 Thread Kosa

I think we should consider this one. I know we
have some issues with video right now, but for
GTA03 most of them could be solved. I would be
very nice to be able to send video using the
same jack we use to send audio. 5G iPods and
some other devices do it.

My 2 centavos.

3.5, definitely.
And continuing the earlier comment about Nokia - the N95 (and possibly
other models) has a very interesting 3.5mm connector that provides much
more than just sound.
If a 3.5mm headphones are inserted, it plays regular stereo. However it
also accepts the more advanced connector of Nokia's provided
headphones which also have a small console to control volume,
play/stop/forward/backward, etc.. That one has 4 contact points and not
3 like in regular stereo headphones.
It even supports video playback - there is a cable that comes in the
box and uses the same connector point to output several video types.

Sometimes the phone detects the plugged device automatically (I guess
if it supports some Nokia standard), and if it doesn't recognize, it
provides the user a list of options to choose from (headphones, tv-out
cable, music stand).

Just a thought...

Re: clarification re easy OpenMoko updating for average consumer

2008-05-15 Thread Kosa

That's something I thought some time ago,
but it was not possible 'couse there are
too many possible hardware combinations.
But we don't have that on the Freerunner.

It would be nice to add to the description
of every package, app or update the time it
take to install it. I mean, we can calculate
the time it takes to download from the spped
of the connection, and we ask the developers
to add the times it takes to install to the
description of the software, or even devel an
app wich times it. Perhaps also could show
and/or share that data.

Just a thought.

Happy waiting.

I'd say that if GSM downloads are going to be slow, then downloads
should also occur if the phone is plugged into a PC and network
bridging is set up -- not everyone will have a wifi router.

Since the updates will require a certain amount of time and battery
power, the update should only happen once the battery power is above a
certain level whether plugged in for charging or not.

For example, if the battery was completely drained, and the user plugs
it into a PC, if the charger can't keep up with the drain of
installing updates, then updates shouldn't happen just because it's
plugged into a charger.

This doesn't affect any other mailing list or personal messages coming
to my Email account, which helped me pinpoint that it's an issue with
the OpenMoko community list.

Thanks,

Re: Wiki is down

2008-05-05 Thread Kosa

Don't know if someone fixed it but right now it is working fine for me.

Eventhough we might try to set up a mirror.

Did it went down becouse of Steve's good news about mass production
status? :D

Have a nice week.

Re: .Mac like service

2008-04-30 Thread Kosa

Robin already listed some of them, but as I think, the list
could get bigger, specially 'couse it deppends on the apps
we will make for Openmoko. That service might even be
something that could bring some new ideas to build software.

I'm not sure about that, but again as Robin,
I think could offer that service for free and
set up an account to recive donations from
those who want to do it.

Re: .Mac like service

2008-04-30 Thread Kosa

I knew you buys will bring some very good ideas. :)

Now I think we could even set at least two groups
of apps related to this service. One group might be
refered for those apps we develop for personal matters
as sms storage, contact list, time-zone, language and
others like that (encrypted and protected), and the
second group might be related to communities, groups,
public and social networks like facebook, lastfm and
many others, wich could be shared.

 my list starts with:

case i need to re-install everything)
 *backing up e-mails/text messages
*storing gps coords in case the phone's stolen/lost
*backup/storage of any other arbitrary files

* Allow backup and incremental synchronization of typical data items
stored on mobile devices:

* SMS/IM histories
* last dialled/received calls
* contact lists
* browser bookmarks, histories and cookies
* calendar events
* various account information (GPRS, HTTP proxy, email, IM)
* stored certificates
* global preferences like language, time zone, visual theme
* software-specific settings
* user documents
* information about installed downloadable addons
* As much as possible should be synchronizable across devices and
software platforms.
* Leverage existing open standards wherever possible, e.g. use vCard
for contact information.

* Provide automatic conflict resolution.
* Be bandwidth-efficient.
* Survive long periods without connectivity and synchronize reasonably
afterwards.
* Don't insist on complete synchronization before parts of data become
usable.

* Be secure so that even passwords and certificates can be trusted to it.
* Do not require server-initiated activity because it's often
impossible, i.e. rely on pull only.
* Allow for interchangeable transport layers to make use of various
connectivity options available on devices:

* HTTP
* various serial port-like connections like IR and BT
* maybe offline synchronization via memory card
* Allow automatic offloading of data that's typically moved from
device to PC:

* pictures, video and audio recordings
* various logs
* Probably allow sharing or publishing parts of user's data.
* Provide remote control and reporting infrastructure that allows:
* upgrades of device software
* activation of special modes on lost/stolen devices and obtaining
information from them
* Transparent expansion of device's storage, e.g. the user can
continue taking pictures without thinking about where they go, and the
older ones are pushed off to the server.

.Mac like service

2008-04-29 Thread Kosa

Hi everyone,

I wonder if there's any chance Openmoko could
(or is going to) offer a service like apple's .Mac
for the Openmoko users. I have some ideas (and
I'm sure you have a lot more) that could make
this service very useful.

I was just about to add it to the wishlist, but I'm
not sure where to do it. It is not a hardware
matter, but it is not about sofware neither.

And please notice I'm not saying it could be just
for the Neo1973 and Freerunner users, but
Openmoko, and by that I mean future Fic divices
as well as other devices running Openmoko.

Re: 10 PACK UPDATE!!!

2008-04-25 Thread Kosa

Hi everyone,

I was just about to ask that, eventough Openmoko is perhaps the topic
I talk to my firends the most, and some of them have said they want to
get one, I'm in Mexico and It will be very hard to get a tenpack here.
Tthe minimum salary here is arround the 600 dollars per month and
getting a 400 device might be too much for most of my friends. Well,
it'll be a big luxury to me too but I can stop eating for a week or
two to get one of those babys.

Tomorrow we'll have Flisol here in Latin America, wich is Festival
Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre and means
Latinamerican Opensource Installation Fest (or something like that)
and I will be talking about open hardware and software develompent for
mobile devices, taking Openmko as the main subject, and perhaps some
of the people there would like to get one, but I'm not sure if I can
convince them to get one with just one conference, and it looks like
the freerunner will be released very soon.

I want to get a Freerunner no matter what, but I would love to get the
pouch and the earphone even If I have to pay a little bit more. I
might even join any US group in California, Texas or any other
southern state and ask the one who gets the bulk to send my Freerunner
to me.

Have a nice wwekend and wish me luck for tomorrow.

(waiting for the BIG day...)

Remember, Steve is still deciding what to include in the box. These are
just a bunch of stuff that fit, from which he is making decisions:

If someone with more skills than me at web page design would like to
