wiki spam - urgent
Dear all, mainly old openmoko admins, we have been dealing with the spam attacks on wiki.openmoko.org quite successfully until now, but it s getting more and more difficult. I have now cleared over 600 posts (big THANKS to everyone, who keeps marking spams as for speedy deletion), which is about weekly/biweekly spam dosage, but as every page requires three clicks, you do the math for what muscle memory my fingers are developing :) If there is anyone able to help from the admin side, suggestions have been posted here. http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/User_talk:Vanous on what could/should be implemented to eliminate spambots. We also need more people to be granted erase permissions, i think it is clear from the logs who contributes and is eligible. If admins have no time, is there anyone with mediawiki experiences who could implement the given suggestions easily (given they would need to be granted some required access)? Please stand up. thank you Petr ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: Flashing qi broke my freerunner - SOLVED
With the 2+4+2 qi, WSOD seems to happen more often. And curiously enough, removing power (as in pulling the battery out), doesn't help. It is then guaranteed to reboot into WSOD. Strange that the phone is capable of keeping this state over poweroff - do qi and uboot write state into flash? The solution is to boot into NOR flash, and then select Poweroff from the menu. After that, I get a normal reboot without the WSOD. Graphics indeed seems a bit faster with this qi. :-) I hope the WSOD problems can be fixed in the kernel and/or the xserver. It happens without this qi too - perhaps not as often. i can confirm exactly the same findings. as JaMa stated, perhaps this will help to find the cause of WS altogether... If the latter, how do they get the rootkit on there in the first place? Re: [Shr-User] Quick e-mail poll: Still using your Freerunner?
WTF? Not necessary here IMHO. Sent sms storage is implemented for quite long time... They are just displayed together with incoming ones, as there is no different view for sent messages yet. And thanks for reminding us about 386, it probably should be closed now :) thanks for reopening the bug for the missing view. i am testing this now and for some reason i can receive sms from other people, i can also send sms and yes, can see them in the inbox (great, thank you) but when sending sms to myself, never seem to receive (or perhaps just see?) the message in inbox. this led me to the conclusion sent messages are not saved because for a message from me to me i can see just one message and not two. this is on shr-u, upgraded today. And that strange GPRS issue (which is even more strange to me, because I never had that on my FR :x) is going to be resolved soon with ogsmd-fsogsmd transition (which is also going to give us nice performance boost) just because you never had it does not mean it doesn't exist. i know about the ogsmd-fsogsmd transition and am eagerly waiting for it, holding by breath and wishing Mickey will manage to have it done before jumping to his other duties. strangely enough, i didn't have the GPRS issue for some time before Christmas, now it bites every time i use gprs. SHR FSO data only connection
i have a clone sim - two sims with the same number (official, this is o2 service in eu). the sim registered latest on the network takes all the calls and messages. often i use this in the way that fr get's online via gprs and my other phone receives the calls. now, with recent shr-u, if i start with one sim in fr i get into troubles when my second sim get's registered. gprs cannot connect, calls cannot be made with om2008, i could in fact make data (gprs) connection only and all would be smooth. I could even run gprs on both phones with no issue. i have a feeling i could do this on shr during summer, but now it's not possible. i had 1024 fix done in the fall. easy sum up: - can i use fso based distro to make gprs connection only and not to register for calls? (as for example umts dongles do?) - is there a way to re-register on the network? FWIW, as well as the discussed rotation support, I'd also like to - add a GPRS/PDP toggle to the GSM gadget - add a fast charge menu to the battery gadget - fix the battery gadget so that it it goes up to 100%. This sounds great and needed. Communication with SHR devs might be useful to get it to SHR soon. So I think there's a strong case for an ongoing FR-focussed e17/illume codebase. Re: Ideal screen rotation
The software that control rotation need to know if the foreground app should run in landscape, portrait or auto mode. (And perhaps the upside-down variants as well.) Or, what I think would be the proper way to do it, the application should broadcast to dbus that it prefers no rotation, or one of the 4 possible rotation states and omnewrotate could listen to such requests and not rotate while there is such a message in the bus. so how does framework fit to this with it's orientation interface? Re: Ideal screen rotation
so how does framework fit to this with it's orientation interface? As far as I know, FSO will only emit some signals from time to time saying what position it thinks it's on. Other programs can plug into it and decide what to do (but of course that isn't at a rate useful for gestures). i am testing that interface now and it reports position in less then 2 seconds (which i consider very optimal for regular usage). what kind of gestures do you mean or what do you mean by gestures? Look for accelges (for an example). You need a lot more finegrained readings (several per second) in order to understand adequately a gesture (example, shaking the freerunner, doing an L in the air, etc...) oh yes, agree, but this is complicated and has nothing to do with simple screen rotation per application/user needs which i thought this thread was about? Re: Launcher v0.41 - New Release
it feels very responding, after all data is loaded. (most delays seem to be caused by waiting for the opimd data). Actually, the contacts are synced the first time only. The SMS's are typically not that many, but for opimd to go through all the calls, parse them and send them through the dbus really takes long. Since launcher doesn't know if you received calls when it wasn't running, it uses the time of the last call it has in its local db to query for newer calls from opim. Hence the delay. Typically, about 10 - 12 secs. Keeping a smaller log will speed up launcher. I've been thinking of deleting all the calls older than those launcher displays - or some x days automatically. What do you think? if the number of days is configurable (possible to set to unlimited), this would be very good. 1) in contacts, all the categories are listed twice (all empty), this was also the same in .39. That must be something I'm doing wrong in the db creation. While I solve that issue, you could remove those duplicates (and change them to something more appropriate to yourself) manually by changing the category names in the contacts_cat table. - sqlite .launcher/launcher.db - delete from contacts_cat; (or delete from contacts_cat where category='Family';) - delete from contacts_cat where key = 1; - insert into contacts cat (category) values ('your_new_cat'); I will finish work on the customisation of categories in some time. If you have deleted the old launcher db - you've lost the categorisation of the apps and the contacts. Maybe I need to shift this to another db - so that the working db can be deleted but this data remains. To set categories for the contacts click on set cat. You'll see a list of your contacts. Select a category, select the contacts you want in that category and click 'Set Category' button. The selected contacts will be removed from this list and appear under their category. ok 2) opimd fields should probably be configurable somewhat, now it doesn't show all my fields... or did i miss something? That's missing. I'm working on it - should be done soon. Thanks for all the feedback. Did you like the the fact that your contacts now show when you contacted them last? couldn't enjoy this one yet, from home i have to call from a gsm gate, there is no signal inside my house... but will test this afternoon or on the weekend, thanks for all the great work and time! :) Petr ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Given the physical size of the display and the hardware constraints (touchscreen jitter, for a start... not going to comment on the Glamo) I think this is very questionable. There are other metaphors available that would fit the device's strengths much better. What about paging? good words mickey. good words. :) (i have a todo item for the scrole rto have a page mode. it already has a page mode actually - but its a scrolling one much like iphone's N pages of icons - but it's infra to simple provide some theme elements that you press and they jump up/down/left/right a page and then do the jump - so it's mostly there. it just hasn't been any priority for me - am working on an oldie request to get rotatable objects.. which now works. under flux.. but works and renders... image and text objects so far are working. in theory all other basic object types too, but smart objects - not yet). While i agree i still wonder. i tried latest android on freerunner yesterday - most scrolling nice and smooth. had qtmoko on last week - the same (yes, i read the explanation why it works, but it works). now, in order not to put anybody down, i must say that for example scrolling in shr contact list IS smooth. so my question is: where exactly do we have scrolling issues? think about it. Then i tend to think about the Illume desktop, that is so much unfriendly to scrolling. Raster, i meant to ask before but had no time: if we take etk toolkit and E window manager as for granted for SHR (hopefully with some choices, but still), is there any other desktop module we could use instead of Illume? Re: Insisting on metaphors that exploit the device's weaknesses (Re: Centralization of graphical awesomeness)
lots of alpha blending - if you have the 16bit engine you get no scale cache (thats 32bit engine only). but worst.. is the font style. check carefully. text has a soft dropshadow. that is drawn by 1. drawing the shadow first and that draw 25 copies of the text with very faint alpha. THEN draw the text on top. that is a pretty big expense. there is no text effect cache in evas at the moment, so this really hits you. turn off the soft dropshadow effect in the theme.. and watch it get 3 or 4 times faster (expedite has a test just for this - on a desktop (in fps) i get 128 and 489 fps respectively just by having no soft shadow on the text). thats pushing on close to 4 times faster. it's an effect - that doesn't come cheaply. the alternative (an actual blur filter) isn't too cheap either. but it's something that can be improved for sure. you want it fast? turn it off. :) Thank you for all the explanation. I think the 32bit engine is the only to go with now. Perhaps the optimization is is already done, maybe not. @Bernd Prünster: you are already very good with this, it would be good to see the difference, if not used already... mind to try the above in gry* ? i started a rewrite- illume2 is in svn. its much cleaner and leaner designed to allow for replacable home screens (ie a home window provides by either another e module or another process). as well as top shelf (inf act any corner/region of the screen) can also be a window provided by.. another module... or another process etc. its much more like the kbd code. it's started. it's not usable. it's on the backburner until a bunch of other tasks are done that are much higher priority. ok, will hope for better times to come developed? What do you use on small device? Illume was ditched long time ago, is there not a replacement with attention? Re: Centralization of graphical awesomeness
As an important but overlooked side effect, the more capable the graphics toolkit is and the more bloated and unfriendly the resulting end user interface will be. While we were at replacing the original gnome mobile desktop, I would have liked to start from a minimalist but inovative toolkit more adapted to limited hardware like the freerunner or the many other gadget with only a small touchscreen that will keep getting out, instead of having one more toolkit for the same device range for which we already have dozens. my 2 cents: we can have lighter themes in E (as for example gry is, thanks the author for that!), but then need to have the X11-16 working - at this point, it has been recommended by Raster not to use it and even the new SHR phoneui apps cannot work with X11-16. So we are going back to the even slower engine. Could this be looked at and revised? We need X11-16 for the Freerunner, the 32bit rendering is way too slow on Freerunner. Illume is absolutely unmaintained - as Raster pointed, it hasn't been actively touched for a long time. Please see list of Illume immediate issues [1]. Raster, are you using Illume yourself somewhere? Could Illume get some attention? Otherwise it's going to die with the Freerunner users getting another phones (Pré etc). As i see it, if the above will not happen, users will slowly drift away to solution perhaps not so optimized but feeling lighter and maintained. So the wish for E being THE toolkit for mobile devices will disappear. And we can see this already. SHR has been asked several times for more options in window managers. And as SHR has no manpower to provide this, Debian might start gaining attention, proper deb packaging of FSO will help this a lot.
