Re: Selling Freerunner - London

2009-08-08 Thread ezuall

I've had requests for more information, so some pictures have been uploaded
to:

http://www.shockinggrey.com/tiki/tiki-browse_gallery.php?galleryId=2

* The buzz fix has been applied
* Earphones, charger, carry case, stylus, new battery (supplied with buzz
fix) and original box are included
* 2GB Micro SD card included
* £172
* SHR installed, but I'm assuming anyone who buys this will be comfortable
flashing the device with which ever distro they want, that is the most fun
part.

Selling Freerunner - London

2009-08-07 Thread ezuall

All,

Unfortunately I don't really have time for my Freerunner anymore. This was
one of the coolest devices I've ever had the opportunity to use, but it's
depressing having it gather dust in the corner while someone could actually
be using it.

Before I put it on eBay I was wondering if anyone in London is looking to
buy a Freerunner (Recently returned from a holiday in Germany where it had
the Buzz Fix applied)?

Cheers

Hi there,

I found it, but I haven't been able to test it on my Freerunner, because I'm
testing android on it at the moment. You can grab it here in the next 24
hours (remember that I did warn you about the changes not being pretty):

http://pastebin.com/d3b742c7f

The format for the card files are as follows:
word/question : answer : pronunciation/other notes

Let me know how it goes.

Re: Bluetooth headsets to the rescue

2009-03-25 Thread ezuall

Thank you for the feedback Steve,

Please note that this was never meant to be an attack on Openmoko, just a
question that was nagging me for a while there. I really meant what I said
when saying I am a fanboy.

Now I have nothing left to winge about, and I've used up my last questions.

Am I happy now? Yes, just the feedback is enough. I don't ask questions so
people can say what I want to hear, I ask them for the real answers, and that's
what you gave us.

Thanks again and all the best

Re: Bluetooth headsets to the rescue

2009-03-23 Thread ezuall

Hi again,

I can tell that these e-mails of mine will either age-out like so many
regarding this issue have in the past, or the community will get upset
because of my constant and irritating questioning.

Would it be worth while to start a petition for the official fix in the wiki
(As I said in the past this is not to force a fix into existence, only to
get official word on whether it will ever be available)? That way I can
stop filling up your inboxes with e-mails that you are probably already
tired of.

Thanks

Great feedback everybody, I have no doubts regarding the community's
dedication to solutions to this issue. And I really appreciate all the hard
work you guys are doing.

That said, I'm not going to stop asking for final word on the official fix.
If it is possible and practical it will be provided, if not Openmoko should
just say: Listen guys, we're sorry that thing's didn't work out, but the
fix just aint happening, it's DIY or nothing.

Buzz Issues - Last Questions, I promise

2009-03-20 Thread ezuall

All,

First thing I want to apologise for crossposting, I tried popsting this in
the hardware section, then realised I was not a subscriber to that mailing
list. Maybe that post will not go through, in which case it won't matter.
Here we go.

Speaking as a fanboy of the Freerunner and everything Openmoko does I can't
help but be disheartened by the fact that the noise on my Neo is still
preventing me from using it as a phone. Lately I've hardly used it at all,
because it kind of feels like it will never be fixed and I get depressed
when I look at it. Seeing as I have been offline for a bit regarding the
freerunner I may have missed any new information about the fix, so in case
I've got it all wrong please point me in the right direction.

I've had it for more than half a year now, and the progress made on so many
levels is great. I love the freedom and all the different distros.

So two questions:
1. Will there ever be an official fix from
Openmoko/Truebox/WhicheverSupplierYouBoughtItFrom. By fix I don't mean just
instructions on how to do-it-yourself, but a route for non-soldering users
to get the fix applied. If not, just say so, I don't want to wait and hope
if there will be no change.
2. Has anyone in London applied this fix succesfully? I'd be willing to
pay to get this sorted.

I feel like one of those moaning idiots on the mailing lists that I usually
hate, but I just need this clarified.

Re: Buzz Issues - Last Questions, I promise

2009-03-20 Thread ezuall

@All: Thank you for the responses, I've asked similar questions with no
response.
@Paul: Bluetooth is one of the options I have been considering, and it's
good to know that it may be just around the corner for me.
@David: Thank you for the links, I did read some posts about the buzz fix
party, and I love the idea. This is great news, but only if you happen to
be in the right country. I appreciate openmoko's involvement, but this
isn't an official fix. That being said, the fact that users are able to do
the fix is one of the empowering things of Open Source Software/Hardware,
and why I still don't see any better alternatives to the Freerunner out
there (when it comes to open philosophy and community involvement).
@Risto: I agree, I'm happy for them too, but would like to be happy for me
before my Freerunner's 1 year anniversary.

And finally I just want to say that I really am a supporter of Openmoko. I
followed the project for more than a year before finally getting my hands on
a Freerunner as soon as I was able to after the release.

All the best

Re: Is there an echo-free distro?

2009-01-23 Thread ezuall

Hi all,

I've tried most of the distributions and patches that are echo free and
nothing has worked sofar except when I configure the volume so low that you
can hardly hear a thing.

One thing that makes troubleshooting this issue so tricky is the fact that
the echo is experienced by the person on the other side of the phone and
there is no way to verify whether there is an echo from the Freerunner
itself.

Would it be possible and what would be the steps involved in creating an
application to check whether the echo problem is present? Since the echo is
caused by the audio path inside the Neo there has to be some way to verify
and display the magnitude of the echo locally.

[FSO] Re: Freerunner's GSM Calypso Modem Firmware Upgrade...

2008-11-19 Thread ezuall

Great news,

I got myself a 3-mobile sim(UK) a while ago for testing the Neo, but that
never worked. Now because I had another sim for my primary phone I didn't
worry too much about it, but giving that upgrading firmware for a GSM modem
sounded awfully cool I thought I'd give it a go (moko10b2).

The instructions on the wiki worked like a charm, and I got all the output
as predicted.

I'm running M4 at the moment, but from memory with 2008.x and qt Extended I
got something like No Sim Inserted in the past.

This has now changed to Failed to read authentication status. Is this a
step in the right direction, or does M4 just have more robust error
notification?

Send Key Press Event

2008-09-01 Thread ezuall

All,

I have been playing with the accelerometers in my Neo as many of you
probably have (while eagerly waiting for the GSM noise interference and
Voice echo problems to be resolved ;-) ) and I have run up against a
problem.

I want to send keypress events to the device (using python), but I can't
seem to find any information on this. Maybe I am missing something really
obvious, but I have been scouring the web with no luck thus far. So if
anyone could tell me how to achieve this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

On a side note: The Nokia N800 connection management and browser is really
pretty cool, are these parts of it proprietry or is there some other reason
they can't be used on the Neo?

Re: Openmoko on Design

2008-07-28 Thread ezuall

Potential, that is the first word that comes to mind when I think about and
play with my freerunner. I spent months absolutely obsessively waiting for
the release, but when I first received it I was afraid. The gps issue was
all over the mailing list and I was thinking that things weren't working out
exactly as I wanted. It is embarrassing that it took me some time to
recover from that initial shock (3 days) and to realise that what I held was
truly open.

Deep down I knew it wouldn't arrive in my hands perfect, but that is the
point. One closed device can never be perfect for everyone. Only through
customisation and expansion can each one of us make the device perfect for
him/herself. And we need not do this in isolation, when we do something
cool we can share it, and then others have the *choice* to implement this
feature/gimmick/personalisation on their own device, in their own way.

I have grown accustomed to companies telling me what looks pretty and how
things should work and that is part of what scares me. There is no excuse
not to make the freerunner behave exactly the way I want it to.

To start settling into the freerunner I flashed ASU (using VMware) this
weekend and was amazed at how easy it is to customise. Changed the icons,
created new launcher items and linked these to plain-old shell scripts to
connect to my home network etc. Installed vte terminal, changed the font
size, to summarise: Nothing ground breaking yet, but I did it the way I
wanted to and there is a lot of potential.

Rock on freerunners!
