Re: case manufacturing
I made a case mockup a little while ago. But I never had time to create a 3D model. I came across a few problems while I designed the case: - The Freerunner doesn't have any buttons on its front. In addition to that, the borders left and right from the display are pretty large (around 0.8 cm/0.315 inch). Everytime I looked at my mockup, I thought it's looking some kind of strange. It's really hard to get a good design if you only have a display and nothing more. - Another problem that was resulted by the one above was that every mockup I made looked either like the iPhone or a LG Prada (or like all the other mobiles with a touchscreen). These days nearly every touchscreen phone looks the same! - The last problem I came across was the thickness. Even if the bevels around the display are removed (that makes about 3mm/0.12inch less), the phone is still very thick. But I don't think there is a way to get it smaller... Have a look at the mockup here: http://www.opkg.org/images/case_mockup.jpg It would be really cool if someone could create a new case. I never liked the original one, and something more stylish would be great. - The Freerunner doesn't have any buttons on its front. In addition to i'd pretty much like to see at least some kind of 5-way rocker switch -- i do not know how rakshat will implement an usb keyboard, but it might be a way for hw freaks to do the same with some simple buttons only. - Another problem that was resulted by the one above was that every mockup I made looked either like the iPhone or a LG Prada (or like i am comfortable with the current shape, looks a bit different. - The last problem I came across was the thickness. Even if the bevels around the display are removed (that makes about 3mm/0.12inch less), the phone is still very thick. But I don't think there is a way to get it smaller... if i remember correctly it's not much thicker than eg the iphone -- but the iphone has an rched back, getting thinner towards the sides. withe current design (buttons and slots at the sides, back cover easily removable) there's probably not much to be done about. re the bevel i was rather concerned wheter there's only empty space behind or if the hw requires them. it would be very nice if the edge between display and casing could disappear or be lowered substantially ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Any information would be appreciated. ponoko.com would do it for you, or emachineshop.com there are a few companies around that will do 3d printing [1], and that's pretty cheap and immediate. try a google search you'd need to design and spec the thing yourself of course, and i have no idea on costs [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_printing ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
