[Cooker] 9.2 - disaster already?

2003-10-16 Thread Ron Stodden
9.2 - disaster already?

After an hd.img install of everything except servers, I immediately see
that most of the kde RPMs were not installed with no installer error
indication.

After manually installing them and trying uselessly to run World Clock
the amusement menu is rendered useless and cut back to only Arcade
containing only frozen bubble and Chromium. The RPMs are still
installed, which indicates some major conflictual screwup in the way
they handle installing menu items.

From this point user konqueror will not load from the menu. When
tried manually:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$ kfmclient openProfile filemanagement
ERROR: Couldn't start konqueror from konqueror.desktop: Could not find
service 'konqueror.desktop'.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$

/usr/share/applink/konqueror.desktop is present.

root konqueror will load and run from the kicker panel. Useful
work-around: If the kicker root login dialog is ignored then user
konqueror will load and run.

konqueror will load and run if you click on (either as root or user)
/usr/bin/konqueror.

Confirmation and plan to fix before release at end of October, please.

Hmm.
8 hours, 84% done. No intervention once started.

This beats the old FTP by, really quite a lot - it took me 4+ days to get ML
9.1, and required constant re-starts / trying to get onto an FTP server.

Does BitTorrent GUI update for everyone else? Mine says 84% in the title bar,
but the actual display has said '115KiB/s 38.6M downloaded' with a blank
progress bar since (I think) the screen saver came on. Until I sat used the
computer to type this, when it has sudenly jumped to 1747.6M but still no
progress bar. I had checked it a few times, having been up most of the
night... This is v3.3 as downloaded last week left 'as is' to use via
konqueror.
[Further investigation reveals it redraws the window but doesn't update it if
it hasn't been covered. So I can 'wipe' it with this K-Mail window get an
update! Still no bar.]

Not a major problem, it does work (very well, as above).

apache2-mod_auth_shadow-2.0.47_2.0-2mdk.i586 needs apache2 == 2.0.47

rpm -qp --provides apache2-2.0.47-6mdk.i586.rpm output is

apache
ADVXpackage
AP20package
apache2 = 2.0.44
apache2 = 2.0.47-6mdk

Note that 2.0.47-6mdk is after 2.0.44

Why does 2.0.47 provide 2.0.44 anyway.

Also the contrib symlink is missing from the mirror.

[Cooker] [Bug 6140] [GConf2] gconf too fragile about unexpected log out

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6140

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-16-10 09:16 ---
Good news:

1) I updated GconfX anf libGconfX packages = it does not solve my daemon problem.
2) I set the TMPDIR variable = it does not solve it either
(I think this is normal since it was for the locking problem, not the daemon
problem, right?)

3)When I log in with error messages concerning the deamon, I can launch
gnome-settings-daemon by hand and IT WORKS FINE. If I logout and try to log in
again, still the same daemon problem.

4)If I logout, run bonobo-slay, I have a message explaining that some processes
will be killed, exactly the same related by fabrice:
/usr/lib/bonobo-activation-server * 2
/usr/lib/evolution/1.4/evolution-wombat * 3
THEN I CAN LOGIN WITHOUT PROBLEM

I no longer need to reboot my computer now :-=)

Symptoms :
if for example I quit abruptly gnome - CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE ), next time I want to
log, I can't because gnome can't remove the lock ( or find a lock ) in
~/tmp/gconf-username/ ( this location change between mdk 9.1 and mdk 9.2, before
this was ~/.gconfd/... ).
Sometimes you can read the message saying that you have a locking problem ( and
thus read the path to the lock ) but sometimes you see nothing ( just some
windows with dash instead of text ... ).
A bad combinaisaison is when you log in and have the gnome preference daemon bug
( see #6138 ), then you decide to stop everything before it mess up your session
config ( as it asks to remove some applets ... ) by hitting CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.
You reboot the computer to resolve the problem ( argh )and when you try to log
in again ... gconf locking problem ( so you need to remove manually the lock )
and then you can log in ( so 3 attempts and 1 reboot just to log in in Gnome ! ).
This is really painfull when you have several computers to administer under
gnome. the locking proble can be solve by erasing by hand the lock at each gnome
start ( i put this in /etc/gnome/gnomerc ), but this is just a hack. Gnome is
really too fragile in an NFS environment ...

[Cooker] [Mandrake 10] : Updating the default icon artwork

2003-10-16 Thread Eric Fernandez
Hi all
In KDE, Crystal icons are nice, but now they seem outdated compared to
new icon sets available. I had a look at kde-look artworks, and there
are superb pieces of work. Moreover, a new major Mandrake release should
correspond to a new look.

Here are my preferences :

New Icon Set by Sean Parsons
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=6753
He has a site : http://thelinuxbox.org
These icons are very nice, professional
Noia by Carlitus
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=3883
Site : http://www.carlitus.net
They are wonderful, but I agree that for a professional environment,
maybe they are not classical, sober enough. There is also a Noia Warm
version, with redish colours.

Slick icons by Amibug
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=8313
http://www.digital-confusion.net/slickpreview.jpg
download them at : http://www.digital-confusion.net/linux.html
They are very nice, very professional.
Sean's icons and Slick are not yet finished, but may be complete for
Mandrake 10, considering the dynamic of these projects.

What do you think ? I always thought that Gnome showed better icons, and
KDE could get a new set too.

're-written' is desktop 4 with Kmail and there I got another functioning
World Clock.
I think that Mdk who uses Gtk and the Debian menu system and their own Mdk
system of parting the KDE files is loosing some of the original sync because
of c++ and c mis-match.
Personally I prefere to have a full KDE installation and to be able to use
Kappfinder in the original KDE way to add everything I install. I don't give
very much for the Gnome way of hiding away certain programs, that is to say
that they should know better than me what I should use. Pathetic way of non

But, their needs are provided since kernel-tmb-source and

BTW, all boxed sets (and MandrakeClub) seem to have ATI_{GLX,kernel},
NVIDIA_{GLX,kernel}, the NForce stuff, and some winmodem (features page

win4lin kernels.

Now *that* should cater to at least 90% (the rest being those who

because gideon does not use that. it uses online resources.
if you can hack the c/c++ references, to use an xml list which describes the
topic. I WILL BE GLAD. i hate looking info on the net, when i can have it
locally.

I'd really like to find some time to try this new version. I read on the
wxWindows site that kdevelop-3.0 can create wxGTK projects. Is that
 true, has anyone tried it?
gideon has templates even for kernel modules in this version.
if you want i can send you the default project that gideon makes for

But all the good themes were ripped from KDE ;-).

 http://librsvg.sourceforge.net/theme.php

OK, Amaranth and Wasp look decent

 http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/index.php (tux'n'tosh is very cool)

It also uses some Crystal icons to be more or less complete.

Some of the other themes on that page (ie Noia, Slick) were originally
done for KDE ...

 http://librsvg.sourceforge.net/images/spheresandcrystal.png

Also partly a Crytal rip ... anyway, I believe the KDE3.2 versions of
crystal are SVG (for KDE3.1 I believe they were rendered to PNG from the
SVG?).

Re: [Cooker] Re: nvidia driver messes up console mode (framebuffer?)

2003-10-16 Thread Serge Plüss
So far every NVIDIA driver release has worked fine for me, including playing
Neverwinter Nights and Unreal Tournament 2003. No X Lockups, no reboots, no
console screwups (with or without framebuffer).

Currently runing 4496 with GeForce2 MX 400 on a Athlon 1.4 Thunderbird and
Linux version 2.4.22-10mdk on latest cooker. This Machine is usually
continuously running for 5 days and shut down for the weekends.

Card:NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic): nVidia Corporation|NV11 Geforce2 MX/MX 400
[DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:0110 subv:10b0 subd:0001)

Serge

P.S. The only console screwups I get with Mandrake 9.1/9.2/cooker is running
it under VMWare (all 4.0.x versions) after quitting X. Both with the Mandrake
included VMWare driver or the native application one.

   filesystem corruption to the mix).
Maybe it's just nvidia releasing crap in *every* version.

Ah well, YMMV as they say.

I have found that with my geForce4 MX440's only 4191 is stable.

   Bye

jay Still running 4191 myself: GeForce MX 420. Can't get anything later to
compile jay properly, and 4191 seems to work just fine.

jay I hate those darn .run files, anyway.

Grrr, NVidia cards are just making my life miserable. I have almost
the same hardware that one of the Bug reporters and things work well
 for me.

I need to try to found a pattern somewher. Until now it appears that:

 - drivers 4363 works for a lot of people.
 - drivers 4496 fails for several people (they work for me).

Can people please mail me the output of lspcidrake -v and telling me
what versions work/don't work for you?

I have found that machines fail with PIII, PIV and athlons, both with
 NVidia IGP and normal cards.

Only pattern found until now are that the following cards fail:

 - GForce MX
 - Gforce2 MX
 - IGP (Gforce4 MX)
 - standalone GForce4 MX

 At least the:
 - GForce3 Ti500 work (guess what is the card that I have)

 Current theory is that:

New driver with cards older than GForce3 fail. GForce4 MX if I
remember correctly is just a GForce2 core on steroids.

Later, Juan learning too much about NVidia graphics cards.

Fresh 9.2 install on a fresh harddrive. Everything went smooth and the machine
rebooted and worked fine.
Started Mandrake update and it downloaded/installed a couple of files
successfully.
After reboot almost the whole menu tree is empty and all application launcher
items on the Kicker panel dissapeared.
Ran update-menus and that brought back most (if not all) menu entries, but it
didn't bring back any of the kicker application shortcuts.
Had to start adding them manually again. Now I am almost afraid after reading
some similar comments to install any new software or updates.

The reason why you don't see it is because you reboot too often. With
uptimes of 60/70 days on my machines (same hardware running different
Mandrakes) i see it systematically after a 'while' not easy to
quantificate ...

I discussed with Warly about 2 years ago, and its conclusion was to
disable the frame buffer boot. At that time i attributed it to the SGI

I hope it helps.

Symptoms :
if for example I quit abruptly gnome - CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE ), next time I want to
log, I can't because gnome can't remove the lock ( or find a lock ) in
~/tmp/gconf-username/ ( this location change between mdk 9.1 and mdk 9.2, before
this was ~/.gconfd/...

It also allows vendors to drastically reduce time to market

yes, it's said to be costly *for now* (as hsf co drivers were

i do not see any pros in such a trend.

I've tried to upgrade to 9.1 first (so all that's needed will fit on the ramdisk).

In 9.1 installer I got the following error on the 3rd console:
* starting ster 'configureX'
* tu put in modules
* unknown package 'XFree86'
* warning: Can't call method flag_installed on an undefined value at
/usr/bin/perl-install/install2.pm line 296, line 6.

This may have something to do with the fact that the 9.0 machine has ATI's
binary drivers RPM installed instead of Mandrake's GPL-ed one.

There is a newer version of openobex that is out now. It does fix a few bugs.

The thing I am most interested in though, is getting support for Bluetooth

updated openobex with Bluetooth support, but it couldn't find the Bluetooth

Thanks a ton for creating this RPM.

[Cooker] [Bug 6150] [Installation] New: Use better refresh rates in GUI installer

  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal

 Component: Installation
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The installer uses X on framebuffer device. It uses VESA VGA mode with
apparently the minimum refresh rate (60 Hz it seems).

Screen flickering is very visible and causes sore eyes for those who are
sensitive to low refresh rates.

My eyes start aching after a couple of minutes of manual package selection.

There definately should be a mechanism to detect monitor capabilities through
DDC (like with ddcprobe tool) and set the highest refresh rate that the monitor
supports.

All contrib for 9.1, i586 and ppc, disapeared from Mandrake dir, there are no
 9.1 dir in Mandrake-old.

What does this mean, like Mandrake did for 8.1, we're loosing contrib for 9.1,
 This is stupid !

9.1 is still support, is still installed ! This mean about 50% of plf packages
 are no longer installables !

Please reput it on mirror somewhere, better in same tree than 9.1, or move all
9.1 in Mandrake-old. This mean 9.0 is more usefull to use than the latest
really availlable distro (assuming all mirrors are synchronized on 9.2). And
9.1 ppc is the latest stable availlalble, and will be the latest !

They are back. Sorry it was a bad manipulation on our side.

I'll see what I can do maybe you guys dont use kde. but in at least 3 or 4
fresh installs when ever you install any package with a menu for kde this
happens. It does fine if you get them all during install but if you install
any kde apps after the os is installed this happens as well as all the icons
missing off kicker. It is rather annoying.

On a side not my trusty dec prioris 6000/4 can no longer install mandrake due
to the fact that the installer bombs out on the scsi card. I have tried
multiple times now. I have even tried with different scsi drives just to make
shure it was not the drives. this also happens on my compaq 650 I think it is
with a scsi controler and also a dec prioris mx 6200 the thing they all have
in common is that they are all

Multi procesor pentium pro
prioris 6000/4 (4 cpus)
prioris mx (2 cpus)
compaq (2 cpus)

and scsi but the prioris servers use adaptec ultra wide scsi and the compaq
uses symbios I think.

The install in all cases bombs out trying to format the drives. On a side note
I have had mandrake 9.0 on the prioris 6000 and the compaq for a year or so
with no issues. Me think I smell a nasty kernel driver issue.

[Cooker] [Bug 6149] [Installation] getAndSaveFile error when upgrading from Mandrake 9.0

/dev/ram3 has always been 30MB, as you can see in the boot disk images (9.0 and
9.1 both have this in the append line in syslinux.cfg: append initrd=network.rdz
ramdisk_size=32000 root=/dev/ram3  vga=788).

Are you sure you aren't running out of disk space on the target partitions?

You could always make your own boot disk and bump up the ram disk size if you
really think that is the issue.

After 8 hrs, my download was only 20kB/s on 1536/384, max_upload_rate
 20. About 700 MB had been downloaded and 1200 MB up. Although
6881-6889 and 6969 were opened both ways, at this point I tried a couple
of moves that seemed to have an effect previously. I (1) restarted the
torrent with (2) the firewall disabled only until the torrent was well
underway and download climbed to around 100 kB/s for the balance.

I have a firewall, too. My ADSL is 128/512. The upload speed was always
max_upload=13k but the DL speed decreases to 3k after a few hours.
This is due to the firewall which allows only my requests on ports 6881-6999
When allowing external connection on thes ports, the DL speed increases up
to 30-40k and sometimes more.

Then, it is necessary to include in the package a tool which opens these ports
and switches them off when closing bitTorrent.

PS : some trouble with free.fr and adsl
the adsl problem is all over. Been that way since 9.1. For further reference
if you are doing connection sharing then during install only setup adsl. This
will get you a working adsl setup most the time. Then when you boot into hte
os setup your connection sharing after you verify the adsl is working. Make
sure your adsl is working first.

Also don't try to swap nic's it will make a mess. I combed through config
files for hours trying to see were the settings were coming from and even
after hand editing the files in etc and setting them up correctly it would
still not connect. I fresh install did the trick but still this is a little

That message states the response from a Macromedia Tech support:

Thank you for writing Macromedia Technical Support.

The best thing to do would be to fill out the Feature Request form
here: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/ and have other
Linux users do the same.

The engineers view the wishlist regularly and would consider porting
the player to Linux if enough users request for it.

bonobo-activation-server not exiting is normal since evolution-wombat is still
using it (otherwise, it auto-exits after a little timeout).

evolution-wombat not exiting is a known problem in evolution 1.4 which will be
fixed in evolution 1.6.x (because it has no way to know no component is still
using it)..

Anyway, it should not cause bonobo-activation-server goes crazy.. And I still
don't understand why it is only doing that when using gdm.. I don't think it is
NFS related because some RH folks are seeing it on with local home (but I can
only reproduce it on GDM + NFS)

couple of moves that seemed to have an effect previously. I (1)
restarted the torrent with (2) the firewall disabled only until the
torrent was well underway and download climbed to around 100 kB/s for
 the balance.

I have a firewall, too. My ADSL is 128/512. The upload speed was always
max_upload=13k but the DL speed decreases to 3k after a few hours. This
is due to the firewall which allows only my requests on ports 6881-6999
When allowing external connection on thes ports, the DL speed increases
up to 30-40k and sometimes more.

Then, it is necessary to include in the package a tool which opens these
ports and switches them off when closing bitTorrent.

On your firewall ( assuming you are using a shorewall based one ) DNAT
from your fw to the machine you are actually running bittorrent on. Also
cap your upload speed. Once I did that I got 100KB+ second downloads.

There is some work to get it running well if you are behind a firweall.

[Cooker] megaraid driver

How can I switch over to the megaraid 2 drivers using the 2.4.22 kernels

I must say I just installed a RH9 :( machine as a gateway and it was a
big pain too. There was three different ifcfg-eth? for each card. I
think the main problem comes from the profile management. I ended up
deleting completely the /etc/sysconfig/networking directory and only
used the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

Hmmm, our 1600SC is running fine (under pretty heavy load), we have the
Perc IDE RAID in it, we're running 2.4.21-0.22mdk on it (I think ... we
might have updated to 2.4.21-0.25mdk but we needed XFS before 0.25mdk was
available), which is Danny's kernel from Club.

Our 2500 (with the Perc SCSI RAID) is doing fine too, it seems it is about
145 days since we did the last kernel update ...

Anyway, if you can give more detail about exactly what card and driver is
being used, I can take a look (I know a few others that run either 9.0 or
9.1 on 1600SCs with no problems too ...).

locking problem whereas kde works like a charm, - gnome
preferences daemon not starting ).

The only way to solve this is ... to reboot !

PS : some trouble with free.fr and adsl

the adsl problem is all over. Been that way since 9.1. For further
reference if you are doing connection sharing then during install only
setup adsl. This will get you a working adsl setup most the time. Then
when you boot into hte os setup your connection sharing after you verify
the adsl is working. Make sure your adsl is working first.

Also don't try to swap nic's it will make a mess. I combed through config
files for hours trying to see were the settings were coming from and even
after hand editing the files in etc and setting them up correctly it
would still not connect. I fresh install did the trick but still this is
  a little odd.

 I must say I just installed a RH9 :( machine as a gateway and it was a
big pain too. There was three different ifcfg-eth? for each card. I
think the main problem comes from the profile management. I ended up
deleting completely the /etc/sysconfig/networking directory and only
 used the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

You could not really get me to touch redhat anymore. I wont spend my money on
hacked libs that dont compile things correctly. But nice to know it's worse
than mandrake at most everything.

Ah the peace of mind of running mandrake.

 Hallo,

I thought much about testing the 2.6 kernel on my 9.1 install...

I read in this list, some weeks ago, something about changing in modutils
(or similar), so my question is:

When I want to play a bit with 2.6, what do I need else to get it
 (hopefully) working?

on 9.1 it will be hard :(
better get/ wait for mdk-9.2

on 9.1 you have o update pretty core stuff which might break your
insallation

on 9.2 might be just an updated module-init-tools
(older version is included, but it's too old i think )

check here http://supermount-ng.sourceforge.net/mdk-25/

and may be, just may be my packages
http://varna.demon.co.uk/~svetlio/ruby-contrib/wip/ruby-2.6/
but this is 9.2/cooker stuff only :(

There seems there is still an odd locking problem when we
launch update-menus from within %post scriptlet of an RPM
(problems arises from the fact update-menus do itself an rpm
call, rpm -qa), flepied spent a large amount of time trying to
fix that before 9.2, actually had some success with some
scenarios, thought he caught all of them, but apparently not
really all, the problem being that it's very rare here and
 absolutely not reproductible :/.

If *anyone* can reproduce it, please post here the steps to
reproduce it, I'm sure we can come up with a fix quickly. But
without it, it's a hell to debug.

A workaround is to launch update-menus as root.

Aha, maybe that's just the problem! KDE caches the menu; I believe 60 seconds by
default. So you have to not look at the menu for 60 seconds, or log out and in and
the menu should appear OK again.

well yes and no sometimes things appear slowly and sometimes a logout will fix
it but I guess I was wrong in my above statement to be more exact there are
times though that the menu just simply messes up and looses a bunch of
settings and nothing but running update-menues or using menudrake as root or
installing another package that triggers update menues correctly will fix it.
Thanks for jogging my memory I have been way to busy the last few months or
so. My shop has been very busy with all the windows worms and virii running

The only problems i have with mandrake is that i have a few
file/print/firewall servers around and lately there has been a group hitting
the dsl modem users in town badly. Now the mandrake firewall keeps them out
just fine but the dsl modem takes such a huge bashing from packet overload
that it locks up the modem and eventually the linux box looses the adsl
connection which I have not found anything for yet accept to reboot the linux
box and shut of the modem. I have tried restarting the network and all the
deamons that are used for the connection sharing but i must be missing one
someplace because it will only work after a reboot.

this includes adsl, shorewall, network, dhcp, and named. Oh well i wish the
script kidies would find something better to do with their time.

I had only a problem with the firewall. The ports 6881-6999 were not opened
and I could download only from people I have found to upload.
And the dl_rate was decreasing down to few KiB/s (1..3)!
After opening the ports the dl_rate was increasing up to 55 KiB/s.

It would be useful that BitTorrent could open the ports before anything else.
This is a very strong wish!

My upload is still running. I don't forget friends :-)

I have this same bug. I'm running Mandrake 9.2rc1.
I upgraded Mozilla several times (and tried Firebird as well) and they all do
the same thing when using the GTK versions... so this is GTK 2.0 related in some
way.

I upgraded GTK, and that didn't make a difference. I suspect it might be
freetype related, but I'm not certain.

No other GTK+2.0 apps have this problem though.

It only happens with certain fonts, and is very annoying ;)

[Cooker] [Bug 6152] [rpmdrake] New: software media manager incorrectly parsing path

2003-10-16 Thread [danny]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6152

   Product: rpmdrake
 Component: rpmdrake
Summary: software media manager incorrectly parsing path
   Product: rpmdrake
   Version: 2.1-35mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: rpmdrake
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When adding a local source (or removable) and I select the path /mnt/distro/cd1 with
the software
media manager using the browse button, it pastes /mnt/distrocd1 in the selection
box. Seems it
removes a / to much. But only when I select (single click) cd1 while being inside
/mnt/distro.
When I double click it goes into the cd1 dir and when I than click ok it adds the dir
correctly.
So either: single click should select that dir as well (preferred by me) OR
single click should just select the base dir (/mnt/distro) and not incorrectly concate
the subdir.

d.
