[Cooker] 9.2 - disaster already?
9.2 - disaster already? After an hd.img install of everything except servers, I immediately see that most of the kde RPMs were not installed with no installer error indication. After manually installing them and trying uselessly to run World Clock the amusement menu is rendered useless and cut back to only Arcade containing only frozen bubble and Chromium. The RPMs are still installed, which indicates some major conflictual screwup in the way they handle installing menu items. From this point user konqueror will not load from the menu. You reboot the computer to resolve the problem ( argh )and when you try to log in again ... gconf locking problem ( so you need to remove manually the lock ) and then you can log in ( so 3 attempts and 1 reboot just to log in in Gnome ! ). This is really painfull when you have several computers to administer under gnome. the locking proble can be solve by erasing by hand the lock at each gnome start ( i put this in /etc/gnome/gnomerc ), but this is just a hack. Gnome is really too fragile in an NFS environment ...
[Cooker] [Mandrake 10] : Updating the default icon artwork
Hi all In KDE, Crystal icons are nice, but now they seem outdated compared to new icon sets available. I had a look at kde-look artworks, and there are superb pieces of work. Re: [Cooker] 9.2 - disaster already?
Fresh 9.2 install on a fresh harddrive. Everything went smooth and the machine rebooted and worked fine. Started Mandrake update and it downloaded/installed a couple of files successfully. After reboot almost the whole menu tree is empty and all application launcher items on the Kicker panel dissapeared. Ran update-menus and that brought back most (if not all) menu entries, but it didn't bring back any of the kicker application shortcuts. Had to start adding them manually again. Now I am almost afraid after reading some similar comments to install any new software or updates. Serge On Thursday 16 October 2003 04:20, Ron Stodden wrote: Oddly, installing all the 9.2 updates solved all problems (although there is no apparent reason why in the explains of the RPMs involved). Ron Stodden wrote: 9.2 - disaster already? After an hd.img install of everything except servers, I immediately see that most of the kde RPMs were not installed with no installer error indication. After manually installing them and trying uselessly to run World Clock the amusement menu is rendered useless and cut back to only Arcade containing only frozen bubble and Chromium. The RPMs are still installed, which indicates some major conflictual screwup in the way they handle installing menu items. From this point user konqueror will not load from the menu. When tried manually: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$ kfmclient openProfile filemanagement ERROR: Couldn't start konqueror from konqueror.desktop: Could not find service 'konqueror.desktop'. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$ /usr/share/applink/konqueror.desktop is present. root konqueror will load and run from the kicker panel. Useful work-around: If the kicker root login dialog is ignored then user konqueror will load and run. konqueror will load and run if you click on (either as root or user) /usr/bin/konqueror. Confirmation and plan to fix before release at end of October, please.

Both with the Mandrake included VMWare driver or the native application one. I have exactly the same setup as you and this problem happens since 8.1 (yes i wrote 8.1 ...) with all nvidia flavors when i booted with framebuffer. If i remove the framebuffer boot, this behaviour doesn't appear. The reason why you don't see it is because you reboot too often. With uptimes of 60/70 days on my machines (same hardware running different Mandrakes) i see it systematically after a 'while' not easy to quantificate ... I discussed with Warly about 2 years ago, and its conclusion was to disable the frame buffer boot. At that time i attributed it to the SGI 20 monitor i use, but it seems it is more nvidia's specific than SGI ... I hope it helps. Stef -- signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Sometimes you can read the message saying that you have a locking problem ( and thus read the path to the lock ) but sometimes you see nothing ( just some windows with dash instead of text ... ). A bad combinaisaison is when you log in and have the gnome preference daemon bug ( see #6138 ), then you decide to stop everything before it mess up your session config ( as it asks to remove some applets ... ) by hitting CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.
Re: [Cooker] 9.2 - disaster already?
This is probably simply the update-menus that is running. It may take some time (30 seconds) You just have to wait or log off/log in. Eric

By using the same driver on both platforms, significant resources can be saved. - linuxant try to make money of every linux user by forcing them to pay a licence from linuxant in order to use their hardware whereas it's the vendor job to provide support (without any *extra* cost) yes, it's said to be costly *for now* (as hsf co drivers were supposed to be). just look at what they did for their modem drivers once they get a position i do not see any pros in such a trend. after nvidia and ati, we may see support for new hardware become worse and worse :-(

It uses VESA VGA mode with apparently the minimum refresh rate (60 Hz it seems). Screen flickering is very visible and causes sore eyes for those who are sensitive to low refresh rates. I have even tried with different scsi drives just to make shure it was not the drives. this also happens on my compaq 650 I think it is with a scsi controler and also a dec prioris mx 6200 the thing they all have in common is that they are all Multi procesor pentium pro prioris 6000/4 (4 cpus) prioris mx (2 cpus) compaq (2 cpus) and scsi but the prioris servers use adaptec ultra wide scsi and the compaq uses symbios I think. The install in all cases bombs out trying to format the drives. On a side note I have had mandrake 9.0 on the prioris 6000 and the compaq for a year or so with no issues. Me think I smell a nasty kernel driver issue. -- -~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~- Brook Humphrey Mobile PC Medic, 420 1st, Cheney, WA 99004, 509-235-9107 http://www.webmedic.net, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Holiness unto the Lord -~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-~`'~-

My ADSL is 128/512. The upload speed was always max_upload=13k but the DL speed decreases to 3k after a few hours. This is due to the firewall which allows only my requests on ports 6881-6999 When allowing external connection on thes ports, the DL speed increases up to 30-40k and sometimes more. Although 6881-6889 and 6969 were opened both ways, at this point I tried a couple of moves that seemed to have an effect previously. I (1) restarted the torrent with (2) the firewall disabled only until the torrent was well underway and download climbed to around 100 kB/s for the balance. I have a firewall, too. Then, it is necessary to include in the package a tool which opens these ports and switches them off when closing bitTorrent. On your firewall ( assuming you are using a shorewall based one ) DNAT from your fw to the machine you are actually running bittorrent on. Also cap your upload speed. Once I did that I got 100KB+ second downloads. There is some work to get it running well if you are behind a firweall. -randy

If *anyone* can reproduce it, please post here the steps to reproduce it, I'm sure we can come up with a fix quickly. But without it, it's a hell to debug. A workaround is to launch update-menus as root. I'll see what I can do maybe you guys dont use kde. but in at least 3 or 4 fresh installs when ever you install any package with a menu for kde this happens. It does fine if you get them all during install but if you install any kde apps after the os is installed this happens as well as all the icons missing off kicker. It is rather annoying. Aha, maybe that's just the problem! KDE caches the menu; I believe 60 seconds by default. So you have to not look at the menu for 60 seconds, or log out and in and the menu should appear OK again.

Thanks for jogging my memory I have been way to busy the last few months or so. My shop has been very busy with all the windows worms and virii running around. I'm getting really short on sleep now. The only problems i have with mandrake is that i have a few file/print/firewall servers around and lately there has been a group hitting the dsl modem users in town badly. Now the mandrake firewall keeps them out just fine but the dsl modem takes such a huge bashing from packet overload that it locks up the modem and eventually the linux box looses the adsl connection which I have not found anything for yet accept to reboot the linux box and shut of the modem. I have tried restarting the network and all the deamons that are used for the connection sharing but i must be missing one someplace because it will only work after a reboot. this includes adsl, shorewall, network, dhcp, and named.
