And yes, my very mistake, it uses the nv driver, so this bug might
probably be moved to xserver-xorg-video-nv.

No problem, moving it there with this message.

This is at least to some extent fixed in xserver-xorg-video-nv
1:2.1.17-2, as the nv driver will now refuse to load if a KMS
framebuffer driver is active, rather than messing up the display.

Though I don't know what interesting things will happen when you
first start X with the nv driver and only then get the idea to run
modprobe nouveau.

That would be PEBCAK, there's no way to prevent this I think.

Cheers,
Julien

I blacklisted nouveau and all works ok.

I think you are right, both bugs seem to describe the same issue.
I let Maximilian check this and reassign #572858 to lvm2 and mark it as a

Of course I want to help, Michael. Starting by attaching the dmesg;
if there's anything else, please let me know.

I'm sorry, but a dmesg does not help. Please try to reproduce the problem with
a Debian kernel to make sure it's not a problem with your locally build one.

Michael

I get the exact same messages with Debian kernels, both 2.6.32-trunk and
2.6.30.

No answer yet again. Sorry, I'm getting annoyed. If you are not willing to give
out
the information I asked for several times, fine, but don't expect me caring of
your bug report then.

Michael

I failed to understand what information you need exactly. If it is my
fault, sorry. You last asked me to make sure that it's not something
specific to my hand-compiled kernel; I replied that it happens exactly
the same [repeatedly, as I stated this in my original report] with the
Debian kernesl as well. The script is the one in /etc/init.d/ called
'virtualbox' whihch gets installed automatically by Debian apparently in
order to compile a .ko at boot time for the running kernel if it doesn't
exist (the .ko). What am I hiding from you? You want a dmesg from a
Debian kernel? Will do. Want /var/log/messages ? Will do. Just SAY IT.
Don't accuse me of not providing information.

No, this only translates to you insmod'ing a module that does not fit into the

Yes, I am sure, and anyway, since I have virtualbox-ose as a service to
start at boot, it always checks if it has modules for the running kernel
and if not, the script does that. I have tried this with all the kernels
installed and I get the same errors.

Thanks,

I don't have xserver-xorg-input-kbd installed (why?) and after

off. It also occurs regardless of the kernel (I pretty much compile my
own, for testing) , be it Debian or vanilla.

Hi,
The next release of Debian (6.0, code name Squeeze) will be based
on 2.6.32. Please test the current 2.6.32 from unstable and tell
us whether the problem persists. If so, we should report it upstream
to the kernel.org developers.

The 2.6.32 kernel is available from packages.debian.org and can
be installed in both Debian stable, testing and unstable
installations.

Thanks,
Moritz

2.6.32 shows the exact symptoms, this is on testing/unstable.

The first word of the changelog appearing when updating apt is
'allready' instead of 'already'.

Could you please be more specific where you have seen it?

I don't see it in the changelog of apt itself and with a grep over the
sourcetree i also can't find it. APT also doesn't show the changelog
of packages on update (this is the job of apt-listchanges) ...
CopyPaste or a screen shot of the offending text would be great.

Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

David DonKult Kalnischkies

How can I repeat the update in order to see the changelog again?

Well, pages like

   http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175455.aspx
   http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175390.aspx

Might have the same effect. When I observed the first crash I had these
pages open. It crashed with all four pages. It crashed with two of
these pages and it crashed with the page I reported as only open tab in
iceweasel. If I had non of these pages open iceweasel did not crashed
over night.

If you know other candidates which might look similar I can test ist.
The crash was perfectly reproducible. Any of thesa pages open -
iceweasel was vanished next morning. Non of these pages open (I
normally have some tabs with Debian, Wikipedia, GMail, GCalendar etc.
open all the time) - iceweasel looked like I left it in the evening.

Kind regards

Hi,

I use to keep my machine including firefox running also outside business

web page which might be responsible for this problem and I was able to
reproduce this crash with the URL

I have no idea whether this page has some active content which causes
the problem. But if I keep iceweasel running over night with only this

I admit it is a bit hard to track down this problem but I wanted to
submit the issue in case there is a more general problem hidden behind.
Just tell me if you need more information.

gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, which depends on gconf2, libx11-6, libxdamage1 etc.
Personally I don't mind having an X installation on a headless ssh-only machine
(hard disk space is cheap). But the dependencies IMHO contradict the point
that finch is a console IM client.

AFAIK, it's upstream's fault, so you may wanna talk to them.

Iceweasel is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is
usually caused by a recently opened web page.

Not very helpful, that. At least it could say which web page caused the
crash. And anyway a good program should ignore bad input, not crash because
of it. I cannot reproduce the crashes. They seem random. To me, the program
has become unusable.

Could you try running MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1 iceweasel ?

That was my next move, but for now I notice this in your dmesg :

I don't know (nowadays I just use stock kernels and they always
work). I just checked though, and the game Foobilliard (which
requires hardware acceleration) no longer appears to be
accelerated. glxgears is slow. lsmod says I have a module

called radeon, which itself uses a module called drm.

According to apt-file search, the file R200_cp.bin is in the
package firmware-linux. I'll try installing it tonight. Must

rush and do something else now.

Well, I tried installing it, and there is both good news and bad
news. The good news is: in dmesg it now says

[ 51.081753] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[ 51.125579] [drm] Initialized radeon 1.30.0 20080528 for

radeon/R200_cp.bin
[ 51.725307] [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs

The bad news is that calling glxgears or foobilliard now
completely freezes the X keyboard and display. You have to get out
of it with the reset button (or by keeping alt-sysrq pressed and
typing reisubs). Also, if I don't call these accelerated
programs, iceweasel works, but its crash problem seems even worse
than before. Fortunately the damage can be recovered from by
un-installing the firmware-linux package.

Is my computer just too old for modern kernels or modern iceweasel
versions? It has 512 M of memory, which is considered meagre
nowadays, but this is of the DDR type, and I can't find extra
memory anywhere (only DDR2 in the shops now). Or should I try the
fglrx-modules-2.6.30-2-686 package (which is, AFAIK, the non-free
radeon driver package)?

Regards, Jan

Better try the Debian package...either way, are you really using
accelerated graphics on that computer?

I could not see any system in it. It seems to be random. After the
this is embarrassing message iceweasel restores all the old
tabs, seemingly without problems, but then visiting another random
site may cause a new crash.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the earlier problems I had with Iceweasel
(the once a day crashes) usually involved freezing. The
program stopped reacting; moving its window created weird trails
on the screen. This problem is different: the window suddenly
disappears.

About a week ago, links and buttons in flash stopped working. For example, on an embedded youtube video
play and pause don't work when I click them. On e-cards the click here to
play link shows me clicking on it (it changes color), but doesn't actually do anything.

I've tried all of the following:
  * rm -rf ~/.macromedia
  * sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-nonfree  sudo apt-get install
flashplugin-nonfree
  * New Firefox profile
  * Tried in chrome

but none of these work.

Bug#547899: [gnome-session] compiz is started instead of metacity

2009-09-22 Thread Aioanei Rares

Brent S. Elmer Ph.D. wrote:

Package: gnome-session

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
I upgraded to the latest gnome-session in squeeze yesterday. I have compiz
installed but use metacity. After logging out once today,
when I logged back in, compiz was started instead of metacity. When I look at the compiz applet, it says metacity is running even though
compiz is. When I click on metacity as the window manager to set it as the window manager again even though it says it is already what is running,
X restarts and when I login to gnome compiz is running instead of metacity. I don't want metacity because something is not set up right in that I
can't drag windows from the title bar and my ati graphics card doesn't do direct rendering in compiz. In order to get matacity back, I uninstalled compiz.
There is probably some fiddling around I could do to make compiz work right but for now I just want something that works. I have had similar problems in the
past where compiz wants to take over. Usually I could get it fixed by reselecting metacity in the compiz applet.

This should only require a simple rebuild of the package; however, samba
fails to build with the latest version of libtalloc in the archive, so this
is blocked on getting an upstream fix for a problem in the test suite.

If there is anything I can do to help, I'll be more than glad to do so.

Bug#545836: if very long commands are entered, konsole goes berserk

2009-09-09 Thread Aioanei Rares
Package: konsole

I was using psql in konsole (maximized) and I entered a command like

customers full outer join rentals on customers.customer_id =
rentals.customer_id full outer join tapes on tapes.tape_id = rentals.tape_id;

gnome-terminal has no problems with it but konsole, after I reached the right
margin (19 wide display), started showing the cursor at the beginning of the
line I was typing with no possibility of using it anymore. Anyone else please
try to reproduce this.

Correcting it made the segfault dissapear. Still, it's probably an

To be able to look at the VMs, you first need to connect to the hypervisor. In
this case, kvm.

For a local machine, the URI would be qemu:///system

For a remote machine, it'd depend on what mechanism you are using.
For example, for ssh, it'd be:
qemu+ssh://u...@hostname/system

Ritesh

My point when reporting this was simply that virt-manager is supposed to
warn the user about his/her insufficient privileges.

I think there's a misunderstanding.

virt-manager, by itself, doesn't need any privileges. To connect to a
hypervisor, you do need privileges. And that depends on how libvirt is
configured.

So without the URI it is difficult to say what you were connecting to.
And thus it is difficult to make out what insufficient privilege problems that
could be.

Ritesh

Ok, I understand. Please tell me how should I find the URI.

Bug#541347: If started as normal user, virt-manager gives a traceback when trying to open a VM

The hibernate script gets as far as s2disk: Snapshotting system and
then hangs indefinitely.

I have tried starting in recovery (single) mode, bringing down the
ethernet link and unloading all the unused kernel modules but still
the same problem, so it's not X or nvidia.

I am continuing to use (stock) 2.6.29-2-686 for now as a work around.

Bug#540923: after suspend to ram wicd cannot find any networks anymore

2009-08-10 Thread Aioanei Rares

Norbert Preining wrote:

Package: wicd
Version: 1.6.1-3

Hi all,

this email is going cc to lkml and the iwl devel list since I don't know
where it actually belongs.

After suspend to ram and wake up, which works fine, the wireless card
does not work at all. I thought it is hal/dbus so I restarted the
dbus service (which in turn restarted hal, wicd, and several others),

but to no effect. The wireless is gone, no network found.

If anyone on these lists can provide pointers how to debug that, or
where the bug really belong that would be fine.

Bug#531804: linux-image-2.6.29-2-amd64: Fails to mount reiserfs partitions (/home and /usr) suggesting a manual fsck

2009-06-04 Thread Aioanei Rares
Package: linux-image-2.6.29-2-amd64
Version: 2.6.29-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Installed Debian from stable ISO with kernel 2.6.26-2-amd64, which booted just
fine; then upgraded to full unstable, which brought in 2.6.29-2-amd64. When
trying to boot that, it fails to check/mount my reiserfs partitions, /home and
/usr, suggesting that I try a manual fsck, etc. The previous kernel and also
2.6.30-rc8 from git boot like a charm.

Do you automatically save your session? If so, you need to upgrade
gnome-power-manager to the latest version and try it again.

Otherwise, how are you logging in? Is it gdm? If so, have you restarted
gdm since the installation of consolekit? If it is with startx, this is
somehow expected.

No, I do not save my session automatically, I log in via gdm and it has
been restarted several times .

This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents

The same as in the kopete bug, please install the -dbg packages and recreate
the crash.

Bug#514263: thinks that my ext2 root filesystem is fat

Could you please show the output of hexdump -Cn 512 /dev/hda1?
Maybe you had a fat filesystem and mkfs.ext2 didn't overwrite the first
512 bytes.

r...@gnu:~grub-probe /
fat

IIRC the original partition layout of this machine was:

/dev/hda1 - small FAT partition containing dell utilities
/dev/hda2 - ubuntu

I deleted those partitions in d-i (lenny rc1), and made a single /dev/hda1 of
the whole disk, so its start would have been where that fat used to be.

This seems identical to #505137, so I think that bug was closed too
entusiastically..

Bug#508006: konsole: shell prompt often not displayed after a command finishes

After executing a program from the shell, the shell draws a prompt like

  u...@hostname:dir$

However, with current konsole this is often not the case. The prompt
is not drawn always, so it is not apparent that the command finished
execution. After any keystroke the prompt appears fine though. I
cannot find a pattern when the prompt is drawn after a command
finishes or when it is not --- seems random.

Bug#506419: kernel trace during IPv6 ssh output

This is a lenny system. Important because IPv6 is a release goal.

When I run dmesg through a (native) IPv6 SSH connection on a new
server, the kernel spews plenty traces to the console. The first
trace says the kernel is not tainted, in subsequent traces, the
taint is claimed to be GW(512). Note below how it is tainted at
10:25:50 (second trace), but not at 10:25:49 (first trace).

The same problem arises during *outgoing* scp and renders all other
SSH sessions basically unusable for the duration of the transfer.
I can reproduce this with an *outgoing* HTTP session too.

I cannot reproduce the problem with an IPv4 connection.
I cannot reproduce the problem with an incoming transfer.

Syslog excerpt of the last boot and first trace attached.

Can you reproduce on another version of the kernel or a vanilla?

Bug#505718: grep: Ridiculous memory usage

 Hello,

A grep for a simple pattern on a big file results in a similarly big
memory consumption, rendering the machine unusable as it swaps as hell
 and/or a memory allocation failure occurs. E.g.:

$ grep foo /dev/zero
grep: /dev/zero: Cannot allocate memory

I noticed this problem because of a simple `grep php' test in
chkrootkit (launched from tiger) making my machine unusable.

I can reproduce this problem with 2.5.3~dfsg-6 on amd64.

 Regards,

 Laurent.

 Comments/Problems:

The problem is that I'm installing it over an Etch install that isn't
working fully (mainly X and network aren't working) since I upgraded my
system, changing motherboard, processor, video card (now onboard) and
 memory.

I'm using the CD debian-LennyBeta2-i386-businesscard.iso downloaded
 according the instructions in
 http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/debian-installer/etchnhalf

I'm sending attached the full syslog, but the important part is this:

To me it looks like the debconf package is just broken (without Python 2.4
dependency) or that the CD should include Python 2.4.

I guess reinstalling from scratch is your best bet.

storage device, and then right-click on the mounted disk icon and
select eject. That's what Windows does, and IIRC, what Mac OS X
does; there really isn't much else that can be done.

Can we do something about atime on removable media? It is
non-intuitive to most users that sticking a drive in and copying a
couple files off from it is going to cause writes to the device. A
normal user would think that this is read-only access and it is ok to
yank the drive. I've burnt myself several times from this.

Another thing that gets normal users is yanking out a drive that was
definitely idle and then not having the icon for the drive disappear
 on the desktop.

Maybe change distro mount defaults for removable media to noatime? And
add an event when the drive is yanked with no pending writes to tell
the desktop the drive is gone?

Of course yanking with writes pending should generate a big error box.
Can it ask the user to reinsert the drive and pick up where it left
 off?

Might be a little too late and the files are already missing..

 Dear Daniel,

Sorry to bother you so late in the release cycle, but as mentioned a
while ago the Romanian translation for aptitude has some bugs (this is
why I used Severity: normal) which are corrected with attached ro.po
 file.

The changes are only bug fixes and have been reviewed/approved by the
 previous translator (Eddy Petrișor).

Hopefully it's not too late for lenny...

 Regards,
 Andrei

Bug#502071: [Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#502071: ktorrent using too much cpu

Irrelevant how? I agree, this is my first bug report for debian, but

If you think it is a bug, please elaborate :
  - does it go into infinite loops eating 100% of the CPU ?
  - is it specific to a function ? Is there a way to reproduce it ?

If the problem is that it just takes more CPU power than ktorrent2 for
 normal
operation without any other odd behaviour, then there is nothing we (debian
packagers) can do about it. Applications ported to KDE4 are less optimised
 in
their first release, but it gets better with time.

Please be more verbose on your next bug reports and don't forget to CC

I am sorry if it sounded harsh.

Well, I am sorry too...it wasn't the most detailed report ever :) The
problem seems to have
disappeared now, but when i sent my bug report all I had to do was to start
ktorrent and, without any downloading, searching, etc., and it used ~90% of
CPU time constantly. If any more problems occur, I'll notify about it.

Have a good day.
