No problem, moving it there with this message. This is at least to some extent fixed in xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:2.1.17-2, as the nv driver will now refuse to load if a KMS framebuffer driver is active, rather than messing up the display. Though I don't know what interesting things will happen when you first start X with the nv driver and only then get the idea to run modprobe nouveau. That would be PEBCAK, there's no way to prevent this I think. Michael I failed to understand what information you need exactly. If it is my fault, sorry. You last asked me to make sure that it's not something specific to my hand-compiled kernel; I replied that it happens exactly the same [repeatedly, as I stated this in my original report] with the Debian kernesl as well. The script is the one in /etc/init.d/ called 'virtualbox' whihch gets installed automatically by Debian apparently in order to compile a .ko at boot time for the running kernel if it doesn't exist (the .ko). Jan Willem Stumpel wrote: Jan Willem Stumpel wrote: Aioanei Rares wrote: What drivers are you using for your video card? How do you install them? I don't know (nowadays I just use stock kernels and they always work). I just checked though, and the game Foobilliard (which requires hardware acceleration) no longer appears to be accelerated. glxgears is slow. lsmod says I have a module called radeon, which itself uses a module called drm. According to apt-file search, the file R200_cp.bin is in the package firmware-linux. I'll try installing it tonight. Must rush and do something else now. Well, I tried installing it, and there is both good news and bad news. The good news is: in dmesg it now says [ 51.081753] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810 [ 51.125579] [drm] Initialized radeon 1.30.0 20080528 for :01:00.0 on minor 0 [ 51.457965] agpgart-intel :00:00.0: AGP 3.0 bridge [ 51.457989] agpgart-intel :00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device into 8x mode [ 51.458031] pci :01:00.0: putting AGP V3 device into 8x mode [ 51.679116] [drm] Setting GART location based on new memory map [ 51.679178] [drm] Loading R200 Microcode [ 51.679185] platform radeon_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/R200_cp.bin [ 51.725307] [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs The bad news is that calling glxgears or foobilliard now completely freezes the X keyboard and display. You have to get out of it with the reset button (or by keeping alt-sysrq pressed and typing reisubs). Also, if I don't call these accelerated programs, iceweasel works, but its crash problem seems even worse than before. Fortunately the damage can be recovered from by un-installing the firmware-linux package. Is my computer just too old for modern kernels or modern iceweasel versions? It has 512 M of memory, which is considered meagre nowadays, but this is of the DDR type, and I can't find extra memory anywhere (only DDR2 in the shops now). Or should I try the fglrx-modules-2.6.30-2-686 package (which is, AFAIK, the non-free radeon driver package)? Bug#549576: flashplugin-nonfree: buttons/links in flash don't work

Bug#547899: [gnome-session] compiz is started instead of metacity
Brent S. Elmer Ph.D. wrote: Package: gnome-session Version: 2.26.2-1 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I upgraded to the latest gnome-session in squeeze yesterday. I have compiz installed but use metacity. After logging out once today, when I logged back in, compiz was started instead of metacity. When I look at the compiz applet, it says metacity is running even though compiz is. When I click on metacity as the window manager to set it as the window manager again even though it says it is already what is running, X restarts and when I login to gnome compiz is running instead of metacity. I don't want metacity because something is not set up right in that I can't drag windows from the title bar and my ati graphics card doesn't do direct rendering in compiz. In order to get matacity back, I uninstalled compiz. There is probably some fiddling around I could do to make compiz work right but for now I just want something that works. I have had similar problems in the past where compiz wants to take over. Usually I could get it fixed by reselecting metacity in the compiz applet. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.30.090914 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 testing www.debian-multimedia.org 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing debian.linux.ibm.com 500 jaunty ppa.launchpad.net --- Package information. --- Depends(Version) | Installed -+-=== gnome-settings-daemon (= 2.26) | 2.26.1-2 gnome-panel | 2.26.3-1 metacity | 1:2.26.0-3 OR compiz-gnome | OR sawfish | gnome-session-bin (= 2.26) | 2.26.2-1 gnome-session-bin ( 2.27) | 2.26.2-1 Package's Recommends field is empty. I think there's a misunderstanding. virt-manager, by itself, doesn't need any privileges. To connect to a hypervisor, you do need privileges. And that depends on how libvirt is configured. So without the URI it is difficult to say what you were connecting to. And thus it is difficult to make out what insufficient privilege problems that could be. Ritesh Ok, I understand. Bug#540923: after suspend to ram wicd cannot find any networks anymore
Norbert Preining wrote: Package: wicd Version: 1.6.1-3 Severity: normal Hi all, this email is going cc to lkml and the iwl devel list since I don't know where it actually belongs. After suspend to ram and wake up, which works fine, the wireless card does not work at all. I thought it is hal/dbus so I restarted the dbus service (which in turn restarted hal, wicd, and several others), but to no effect. The wireless is gone, no network found. Bug#506419: kernel trace during IPv6 ssh output

Important because IPv6 is a release goal. When I run dmesg through a (native) IPv6 SSH connection on a new server, the kernel spews plenty traces to the console. The first trace says the kernel is not tainted, in subsequent traces, the taint is claimed to be GW(512). Note below how it is tainted at 10:25:50 (second trace), but not at 10:25:49 (first trace). The same problem arises during *outgoing* scp and renders all other SSH sessions basically unusable for the duration of the transfer. I can reproduce this with an *outgoing* HTTP session too. I cannot reproduce the problem with an IPv4 connection. I cannot reproduce the problem with an incoming transfer. Syslog excerpt of the last boot and first trace attached. Bug#502583: scary messages in dmesg
On Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 6:43 PM, Jon Smirl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:31 AM, Theodore Tso [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Solving this problem for desktop users is harder; probably the best thing you can do is to throw up shame dialog box telling them that they did Something Wrong, and while they may have gotten lucky this time, that next time they should close all programs using the USB storage device, and then right-click on the mounted disk icon and select eject. That's what Windows does, and IIRC, what Mac OS X does; there really isn't much else that can be done. Can we do something about atime on removable media? It is non-intuitive to most users that sticking a drive in and copying a couple files off from it is going to cause writes to the device. A normal user would think that this is read-only access and it is ok to yank the drive. I've burnt myself several times from this. Another thing that gets normal users is yanking out a drive that was definitely idle and then not having the icon for the drive disappear on the desktop. Maybe change distro mount defaults for removable media to noatime? And add an event when the drive is yanked with no pending writes to tell the desktop the drive is gone? Of course yanking with writes pending should generate a big error box. Can it ask the user to reinsert the drive and pick up where it left off? Might be a little too late and the files are already missing.. -- Jon Smirl [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? If the problem is that it just takes more CPU power than ktorrent2 for normal operation without any other odd behaviour, then there is nothing we (debian packagers) can do about it. Applications ported to KDE4 are less optimised in their first release, but it gets better with time. Please be more verbose on your next bug reports and don't forget to CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] when replying to get your mail archived.
