Bug#907384: plasma-discover: needrestart breaks Plasma-discover upgrade mechanism

For security reasons, many sceurity tools including lynis recommend
to install needrestart package in order to automatically restart
services if some have been upgraded.

On the copmmand line, you are prompted to select or acknowledfge
services that should be restarted. So you need to enter some
keyboard input for at-get (dist-)upgrade to finish.

Plasma disco\xe7ver does not cope with this.

On PackageKit frontends, all transactions should be noninteractive, so
they shouldn't interrupt the process to ask for stuff.
One exception that we allow for compatibility is Debconf questions.
So, if needrestart uses Debconf, this is a bug in plasma-discover and
Discover should implement the Debconf frontend properly. If however
needrestart doesn't use Debconf, this issue is "won't fix".
From a quick look at the code, the former appears to be the case.

Visually it looks like debconf questions with selectable list and grey
and blue layout. But I did not look at the code.
BTW : the fcat that by default it select packages as dist-upgrade would
is also problematic. Can this be configured?

You should be noted that building kernel from vanilla source
isn't

good idea in Debian.

Except I have been doing this for nearly 10 years...

I don't see any 4.4 branch in Debian
sources, but you may use git tag

"debian/4.4.6-1" as base for your own work/fork.

I'm not using debian kernel nor want to use them. I want a
compiler able to compile upstream code without modifications.

And I want LTS kernel to get fixes as soon as they appear without
being forced to move to non LTS versions.

  -- eric

And BTW, I just checked linux linux git today and
the code is not there so gcc does not compile upstream kernel.
Period. So the new ciomplier breaks upstream compilation using
valid compilation flags.

Bug#797999: We are now more than one year later and this critical bug is not fixed

¡Hola eric2.valette!

First of all, the bug is not critical because it only affects a very
specific setup for a particular video driver.

A docked station using a nvidia driver is not that uncommon I guess...

I suspect that the bug is not present in sddm but in the nvidia
driver, triggered by sddm by trying to use composite on the video
output as is left by the X driver initialization.

The bug is not only in the video driver as kdm works...

What happens if you use the maui sddm theme?

To test this you'll need to install sddm-theme-maui, and create/modify
your /etc/sddm.conf to include:

[Theme]
Current=maui

The breeze theme starts sddm in composite mode, which might not be
correctly initialized for your video card by default in your
particular setup.

Will try and report.

I understand that this is very frustrating for you, but there is an
easy workaround, changing the font through the menu, thus I'm
downgrading the bug severity.
Once you figure out, this is "only" a "display" problem... Been hunting
it for a while, started other shells, ... And if I post the bug, it is
not for me but for others. But fine with the severity downgrade.

In my konsole profile, I was using droid fonts that juts habe veen
removed. So I started my konsole, got the screen but nothing was
displayed at all. It should at least use a default (backup) font and
print something to help user fixing the problem.

To reprodure : define a profile witha font, then remove the font and
restart.

I've forwarded your bug report upstream, please, if possible,
subscribe to the upstream bug, so if it needs to be followed up you
can give the requested feedback.

Here is the requested log file. Note that I'm not sure the trace will
help:
 1) As soon as I launch it, I have continuous traces but process

You have 1 (or 2) application that is continuously (every 200 ms)
asking PC/SC for card status. That is a very bad PC/SC behaviour.

You should try to identify the bogus application and fix it.
I guess I have installed a binary blob packages given my a key
manufacturer :-( SACSrv il you kinow wht it is... Will kill it and retry

 2) As soon as I plug the USB key, it reaches 100% CPU and top
first place but do not show anything diffrent in the log.

will try a strace...

Maybe a problem in libusb.

Do you have kernel errors in dmesg output?

No. Nothing unusual except USB storage medium traces.

What is the output of "lsusb -v" with the USB key plugged in?

Attached...

each time I had inserted a regular mass storage USB key (two

Note that in the laptop there is a build in broadcom credit card format
crypto key reader (that you see in the log), but I do not use it
although for testing purpose I have enabled the driver. But the bug is
only if I insert a USB key.

2015-09-08 Thread eric2.valette
I now have half a dozen boxes that works correctly and this is the only
one that is a docked laptop using an external monitor with internal LVDS
display off. So far as I had multiple temporary breakage on various
boxes due to partial/incompatible packages versions uploads, I did not
consider it was a specific case but now only this docked laptop remains
broken.

Bug#797519: Must be member of input group. Why?

2015-08-31 Thread eric2.valette
After analyzing the startx error leading to no mouse and no keyboard, I
found that I add to add myself in *input* group because all /dev/input/*
devices belongs to root.input with some not being world readable. I have
no clue of why I had to do this to use startx. I never had to do this
before. Or is it juts a leftover of kdm being started and then
"suspended? via the login to konsole menu?

Once done, the session did start correctly. After making the urgent
work, I decided to retry login via kdm and bingo it worked again too.
Did not try with sddm instead of kdm yet.

Nope, it's more likely this:

  * Enable seccomp support on the architectures that provide libseccomp.
(Closes: #760299)

The libseccomp library is in /usr.

Right. I can copy de lib in /lib and see if it works (was already
hit by the same bug with libapparmor!)

And it makes me cry, that we are doing the pointless work of moving
libraries around without any real gain.
I can understand that, that is the backward compatibility problem in
general exacerbated by putting way too much functional stuff in systemd
binary...

And BTW, moving libseccomp libraries to /lib does indeed fix the
problem. Can't you add a test at build time that checks that systemd
does not depend on /usr/lib libraries? (ldd systemd | grep /usr/lib =
automatically detect possible breakage before they really happen).

Hi Tobias,

Thanks for looking at the bug.

FYI: When I first encountered it, I manually downloaded the last
upstream version and tried it. This was not the debian version and I
dunno what additional patches you may add but the problem was not fixed
(few from memory). I will try your newer package version nevertheless
and report.

I will do that anyway (might take some time to find a sponsor, though),
but I would also like to understand the problem. In case it isn't
clear: this assertion error is very weird and might just be a symptom of
a problem that has nothing to do with the symlinks package. Could be a
bug in libc6, the kernel or your hardware. There has been a similar
report in bug #566947¹, except that that bug occurred on rather exotic
hardware.

Come on: the symlinks program has a protected address space that is
protected so nothing is going to corrupt the malloc internal free buffer
management except code executed the program itself. Now, and I can
follow you on libc6, there are other functions that do do return
pointers (but generally its a global/static buffer not a malloced one
and you should not/never call free). But exposing a NEW bug in libc6 is
something strange.

Kernel/hardware/libc6 does not change and the problem vanish.

As I said, the problem may actually be elsewhere. Anyway, I found
indeed a bug in my patch for #61140², but I find it hard to imagine how
that could lead to a malloc assertion error.

a free of an address returned by a non reentrant function could
perfectly cause it (try the _r version with explicit buffer allocation)

Readding only the patch, the useage of the buffer returned by
get_current_dir_name may be wrong: the allocated space is by no way
equal to PATH_MAX+2 so any code making assumption on this may simply
fail. I would copy the result in the static buffer and free cwd.

of a complex source tree fails.

So please package the new version or aat leasta aggrgate fixes. The chnagelog
states:

v1.4 incorporate patches from Fedora
v1.3 more messy-link fixes, new -o flag for other_fs
