Why isn't fusesmb not sufficient? This package is already in Debian, and is
what the NEWS file in bzr points at.

Because it does not allow mounting shares.

It just allows browsing the network.

It's a completely different function.

For example, it is not possible to have it ask for a password when
connecting to a share or it is not possible to connect to a share which
is not advertised on the local ethernet segment.

I guess I can manually set the binary suid root in my debian-live images
until a fix is available.

In the next upload, cifs-utils will not support running suid at all, per
upstream.

Then I should stay clear of that upload I guess as there is no way to
mount cifs shares as user after that in Debian.

Thanks

Michal

The NEWS.Debain.gz file mentions removing the reature but there is no suggested
fix.

Please document the change completely.

There is no such intent. Upstream discourages providing mount.cifs
setuid. So, the decision is up to the maintainer *and* we do not
really intend do show some incitation to do this by documenting the
use of dpkg-statoverride.

Actually, I agree that the current NEWS entry needs to explain the
consequences of the change and present the recommended alternative (I think
I voiced this concern on IRC) - just not *dpkg-statoverride* as that
recommended alternative. I think the changes pending in the cifs-utils bzr
tree address this.
