Bug#663293: avant-window-navigator: upcoming vala 0.10 removal

We could keep it in unstable, and mark this bug as RC so it doesn't
automatically migrate until you or upstream have the time to do the porting.
In that case awn can migrate and will be part of wheezy.
Ok, let's remove it from testing. You can also remove
awn-extras-applets, since it's useless without awn.

Bug#663293: avant-window-navigator: upcoming vala 0.10 removal

Is this package still actively developed upstream? Should it be removed
 from the Debian archive?
We really do not want to ship 4 vala versions in wheezy and awn is the
 last package depending on vala-0.10.
Updating to vala-0.12 won't help much either, since this is the other
 versions scheduled to be removed.

If you want to keep awn, would you be willing to take over maintenance
of valac-0.10? Please keep in mind though, that this version is no
 longer maintained upstream.
I ping some devs from upstream to see if they can help. However, I may
have some time to migrate it myself, not in the coming days, but before
the freeze of June. In the meantime, you can remove it if it's a
 blocking item.

I don't want to take the maintenance of vala 0.10 only for Awn. If I
can't migrate it, it should be removed from the archive. However, I
still think it's a useful application, with not yet a real alternative.
It could be useful for wheezy at this current state (even if the
development stopped), and be reconsidered for wheezy+1.

I've been discussing with Luca (on of our friendly ftp masters) today
what we are going to do with vala 0.10 and awn, since we'd like to get
that sorted for wheezy.

Would you be ok with removing awn from testing so we can proceed with
the removal of vala 0.10?

automatically migrate until you or upstream have the time to do the porting.
In that case awn can migrate and will be part of wheezy.

The alternative would be, to remove awn completely, but if I understand
you correctly you are still interested in it, so removing only from
testing keeps the door open for further development.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#663293: avant-window-navigator: upcoming vala 0.10 removal

2012-04-15 Thread Miguel Colon
Hello:

Currently, Awn is only compatible with vala 0.10. It will at least need
 to migrate to GDBus.

Actually it also compiles with vala 0.12 too. It fails with
0.14/0.16/etc as mentioned before.

I compiled it earlier in an up to date sid amd64 chroot using gcc-4.6
and gcc-4.7.

This should help close #665418 since this is the last block.

Hope this helps,
Miguel

FWIW, we are planning to request the removal of vala 0.10 by the end of
this week, which will make this bug RC.

FYI: I've filed the RM request for vala 0.10 now [1].

With no upstream reaction for 18 months.

Julien, what's your plan for avant-window-navigator (and wheezy)?

Michael
