Bug#575309: user-setup: Should stop adding first user to device access groups
Frans Pop wrote: I disagree with this proposed change. IMO the default group assignments are in line with the purpose of the first user account. I have three reasons to feel otherwise: 1. IIRC, the reason for adding the initial user to groups has been to provide a good desktop experience. See bugs #352713, #166718. So worrying about the first account not having hardware access when not at the desktop seems like scope creep. 2. Having a non-console user in groups audio and video is a straight-up security exposure. Anything that can be done to close that hole is helpful. (I don't know what the status of revoking group membership on logout is, but even without that, some avenues of exploitation are pretty well closed by not having the first user in the groups statically.) 3. As a matter of principle, I feel there should be nothing special about the first user account. We'd had to bend principle for groups and /etc/sudoers, but these were imperfect hacks that suffered from usability problems when eg, adding a second user, or upgrading to a new version of Debian. Now, two issues with the patch: a. passwd/user-default-groups is a documented preseed variable, so it probably needs to remain available for preseeders to use, and the documentation will need to be updated. b. I'm missing the list of exactly what groups consolekit puts the console user in, so I can't tell if we have additional groups in our list. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#575355: ITA: conquest -- a real-time, multi-player space warfare game (curses client)
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I Jonathon Hill intend to adopt this packge. Upstream Website: http://www.radscan.com/conquest.html The package description is: Conquest is a predecessor of netrek. . The object of the game is twofold. The short-range goal is to accumulate kills by shooting down enemy players. You get one kill point for each enemy ship shot down, plus some extra if the enemy had kills too. The major weapon used to shoot down ships is the photon torpedo. . The long-range goal is to conquer the universe for your team by taking every planet. You take planets by killing off the enemy's armies via bombardment, and then beaming your team's armies down. When all the planets have been taken, the game ends, a new game begins, and the player who actually took the last planet gets his/her name up in lights. Licensed under the Artist License. Bug#574201: Intent to NMU b2evolution to fix pending po-debconf l10n bugs (and maybe RC bug as well)
Dear Debian maintainer, The b2evolution Debian package, which you are the maintainer of, has pending bug report(s) which include translation updates or fixes for po-debconf, namely bug number 552702 (and maybe other similar bugs). Fixing #574201 could also be possible (apparently a missing Depends). The i18n team is now hunting the very last bits of missing localization and your package went on our radar. You may have uploaded recently but, unfortunately for you, you then got *another* l10n bug report. So, sorry for this, but the radar beeped at your package and here am I with an NMU intent...:-) I have the intention, as part of a more general action of the Debian i18n Task Force to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for b2evolution in order to fix this as well as all pending translations for the debconf templates. Of course, an upload made by you would even be better...:-) Such changes are always harmless, which explains why I safely consider building NMU's for such issues even though they're obviously non critical. The schedule for the NMU (in case it happens, that is if you agree with it or if I don't receive any answer in 10 days) is roughly the following: Thursday, March 25, 2010 : send this notice Monday, March 29, 2010 : post a NMU announcement to debian-i18n with you (maintainer) CC'ed this can happen earlier if the maintainer agrees In such case, the deadlines below will also happen earlier Sunday, April 04, 2010 : (midnight) deadline for receiving translation updates Monday, April 05, 2010 : build the package and upload it to DELAYED/7-day send the NMU patch to the BTS Monday, April 12, 2010 : NMU reaches incoming If you intent to upload yourself, please notify me so that I interrupt the process on my side. Please also don't upload without a discussion with me. Some translators might send a few new translations and I can handle a round of translation updates for you. Really, don't upload silently...:-) In case I upload an NMU, I will subscribe to the Package Tracking System for b2evolution and follow its life for 60 days after my NMU in order to fix any issue potentially introduced by my upload. Let me know, as soon as possible, if you have any kind of objection to this process. If you'd rather do the fix yourself, I will of course leave the package alone. Same if you have reasons not to do the update now. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#573947: plymouth-set-default-PLUGIN vs. plymouth-set-default-THEME
use_update_initrd.patch Description: Binary data tags 573947 + patch thanks Looking in the source I found that the script plymouth-set-default-PLUGIN is not in plymouth_0.7.2.orig.tar.gz . plymouth_0.7.2-4.diff.gz contains the file and you fixed #573947 in plymouth-set-default-PLUGIN, which IMO is obsolete (but I don't know if it's needed anywhere). I add a patch that calls 'update-initrd -u' from plymouth-set-default-THEME instead of 'plymouth-update-initrd'. I have seen that plymouth-0.8.0 adds an '--help' option so it's not neccessary to fix this issue here. Bug#563551: usb-modeswitch: Disconnect the Huawei E220 3G USB modem
The problem seems to start here: 18:52:24 cthulhu kernel: devkit-disks-da[6011]: segfault at c ip 080660da sp bfb85410 error 4 in devkit-disks-daemon[8048000+28000] It looks like the modem was reset after the crash, falling back to storage mode and being switched again. This happens several times in your log. Did you update your kernel as well? There is a firmware bug in some Huawei models which was exposed by kernel 2.6.31.2; IIRC a workaround was implemented with 2.6.31.5. It causes the modem to reset as soon as the storage (card reader or pseudo CD-ROM present *after* switching) is accessed. The CD access problem you report points definitely into that direction. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done from usb_modeswitch's side. Josua Dietze -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#575343: Precautionary checks slow boot excessively
From: ty...@mit.edu If you are mounting the file system read-only, feel free to change the fsck pass number in /etc/fstab to be 0. That will cause e2fsck to be skipped completely. Wrong behavior. The desire here is not to disable checks due to being on read-only media, but the filesystem is much less likely to incur damage due to normally being read-only. The best example is /usr and sometimes /, where it is *very* important to catch errors, but not all that likely to incur them. Note that mount count is randomized these days, to try to avoid multiple file systems from being checked in a single boot. Which is why I wasn't writing about the mount count. I was writing about the check interval/check time. With systems that reboot less than once a month, the mount count will never be reached. Instead it will be the check interval and worse yet, with infrequent reboots, *all* of the check intervals will expire at once (even if they start spaced out, they will tend to merge together). Also feel free to disable the precautionary checks if you don't want to use it using tune2fs(8). If you are confident that your hardware is perfect, and hard drive will never corrupt your metadata blocks, the precautionary checks can easily be dsiabled. I'm not. I'm pointing out the behavior needs more refinement. -- (\___(\___(\__ --= 8-) EHM =-- __/)___/)___/) \BS (| e...@gremlin.m5p.com PGP F6B23DE0 |) / \_CS\ | _ -O #include stddisclaimer.h O- _ | / _/ 2477\___\_|_/DC21 03A0 5D61 985B -PGP- F2BE 6526 ABD2 F6B2\_|_/___/3DE0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. So worrying about the first account not having hardware access when not at the desktop seems like scope creep. I really appreciated being able to get things working without too much hassle when I was a totally new user, and have often been asked by inexperienced users why simple things do not work as expected on a new installation. I am not involved in setting up more than small networks, and I now demonstrate the differences between users, explain why I set up an initial user account, then often create real users starting from a higher UID with the same UIDs throughout the local network, finally deleting the initial user account. Bug#575369: proc library doesnt detect _FILE_OFFSET_BITS, results in partial process list
Package: procps Version: 3.2.7-11 When using ps or top on a vps debian server pids 65535 do not display. Recompiling procps with -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 solved this issue on that particular machine. The errors source is a readdir() call in readproc.c:simple_readproc(). I thought it might just be a quirk of the machine, but since the ls application could correctly readdir() and find these pids i thought the ps command should be able to as well. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.4 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.028stab066.10 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages procps depends on: ii initscripts 2.86.ds1-61Scripts for initializing and shutt ii libc6 2.7-18lenny2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses5 5.7+20081213-1 shared libraries for terminal hand ii libncursesw5 5.7+20081213-1 shared libraries for terminal hand ii lsb-base 3.2-20 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip Versions of packages procps recommends: ii psmisc22.6-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy procps suggests no packages. -- no debconf information

Bug#575370: BibTex file (C-c Tab in latex mode) fails (emacsbug#5562, fixed upstream)
Package: emacs22 Version: 23.1+1.5 When running in LaTeX mode (the one coming with emacs itself, provided by /usr/share/emacs/23.1/lisp/textmodes/tex-mode.elc, *not* AucTex!!), the command tex-bibtex-file (keyboard shortcut C-c Tab) fails as the tex-shell erroneously goes in the home directory instead of the working directory, so the *.aux file is not found. See http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=5562 The bug is already fixed in the 'trunk' version of emacs (the one that gets pulled by default via bzr). Making the textmodes/tex-mode.el file from 'trunk' compile and substitute the resulting textmodes/tex-mode.elc file for the one coming with the debian package, the problem is gone and tex-bibtex-file behaves as in earlier versions of emacs. However, there is a multitude of other reasons why I think this bug *is* an issue: - Sites with domain names like ker-.deviantart.com do already exist! Do you think they should be accessible by any other proprietary operating system, but not Debian? Not really! - There is already an inconsistency among the different implementations in Debian (or Linux as a whole), as e.g. ping and any other program using gethostbyname() fail to resolv, whereas nslookup and host succeed. - The advice in the cited RFC is already ignored. Domain names that start with a digit, e.g. 12345.foo.bar, can be resolved, whereas the RFC tells us They [labels] must start with a letter, end with a letter or digit [...]. So let's just relax the rules in the RFC (they are only recommendations after all) a bit more to also allow hyphens as border characters in labels. It doesn't harm anyone, it just enables us to resolv a few more actual domain names! For further discussion, please see the bug reports opened against ubuntu [1] and upstream [2]: [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/glibc/+bug/144431 [2] http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4671 Technically speaking, what IMHO needs to be done is to allow hyphenchar as a borderchar in resolv/res_comp.c in eglibc. Please find my patch below (and while we are at at, why not allow underscorechar as well?). Many programs accept a numerical internet address as well as a name. Unfortunately, some programs do not correctly distinguish between the two and may be fooled, for example, by a string beginning with a decimal digit. Names consisting entirely of hexadecimal digits, such as beef, are also problematic, since they can be interpreted entirely as hexadecimal numbers as well as alphabetic strings. Don't use non-alphanumeric characters in a name. [...] Don't expect case to be preserved. [...] This is a mitigation of RFC 1035, as there is no mention of hyphen characters at all. RFC 952: No blank or space characters are permitted as part of a name. No distinction is made between upper and lower case. The first character must be an alpha character. The last character must not be a minus sign or period. A host which serves as a GATEWAY should have -GATEWAY or -GW as part of its name. Hosts which do not serve as Internet gateways should not use -GATEWAY and -GW as part of their names. A host which is a TAC should have -TAC as the last part of its host name, if it is a DoD host. Single character names or nicknames are not allowed. this is contradictory, since there is c.psi.net, which is resolved by gethostbyname(). RFC 1123: The syntax of a legal Internet host name was specified in RFC-952 [DNS:4]. One aspect of host name syntax is hereby changed: the restriction on the first character is relaxed to allow either a letter or a digit. Host software MUST support this more liberal syntax. Bug#575332: virtualbox-ose-qt linked against libqt libraries from experimental.
Not only when you use stuff from experimental. It is always a good idea to use sbuild or pbuilder/cowbuilder to build your packages before uploading. This is even the case when the binary packages will be stripped from uploads in the future, because you easily see missing dependencies locally. Just install cowbuilder, run `sudo cowbuilder --create` and then start a build with a script similar to #! /bin/sh set -e ID=`/usr/bin/id -nu` GROUP=`/usr/bin/id -ng` /bin/rm -rf $HOME/to_upload/ sudo /usr/sbin/cowbuilder --update sudo /usr/sbin/cowbuilder --build --buildresult $HOME/to_upload $@ sudo /bin/chown $ID:$GROUP -R $HOME/to_upload cd $HOME/to_upload /usr/bin/debsign *.changes (don't forget to change the key-id in debsign). You should add your key id to ~/.devscripts: DEBSIGN_KEYID=12345678 And you may speedup cowbuilder startup using following entries in ~/.pbuilderrc (it will share the apt archives with the host rootfs): BINDMOUNTS=/var/cache/apt/archives APTCACHE= Adding debuild options will still work. For example if you have a -2 version and want to add the source to the tarball then call the script the following way (I just say that it is called buildme and can be found in your $PATH): build-sponsor mypackage_1.0-2.dsc --debbuildopts -sa -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: xvfb Version: 2:1.7.5.902-1 Severity: normal xulrunner reftests ended with 62 failures on s390, which are to be attributed to xvfb rendering garbage in some cases. The reftests are run through xvfb-run, and while we could think the problem may lie on xulrunner end, several tests validated the problem to be on xvfb end: - Running the reftests on a s390 with a remote X display on my laptop works - Running the reftests on my laptop with a remote Xvfb on the s390 fails An easily reproducible testcase is attached here. Bug#575336: polyorb: Uses gnatmake -j4 when DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS parallel not set.
Policy 4.9.1 does not say how many parallel threads debian/rules should use in the absence of DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. By default, all my Ada packages detect the number of cores in the build host and use one thread per core. This is appropriate in all situations I have encountered so far, especially for large packages like polyorb. In the case of polyorb, I agree that hardcoding -j4 is not such a good idea; not only because most Debian buildds have fewer than 4 cores but also because most have insufficient memory to accommodate all 4 compiler threads without swapping. Also when new build hosts with more than 4 cores and loads of RAM become common, the build would become suboptimal. The hardcoded -j4 is from upstream; we whould patch it so that debian/rules tells it how many threads to use. Also debian/rules should use one thread per core by default and the number of threads specified in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS if specified. Note to Kurt: my home machine has 2 cores but Xavier routinely uses 4- or 8-core boxes; I don't recall about Reto but I suspect he has similarly large machines :) -- Ludovic Brenta. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#575384: libethos-ui-dev: missing dependency on libethos-ui-1.0-0
Package: libethos-ui-dev Version: 0.2.2-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 3.5 libethos-ui-dev contains /usr/lib/libethos-ui-1.0.so, which is a a symlink to to versioned so file /usr/lib/libethos-ui-1.0.so.0.0.0. The file /usr/lib/libethos-ui-1.0.so.0.0.0 is part of libethos-ui-1.0-0 and libethos-ui-dev should thus depend on that package. Bug#550912: packages for emerillon 0.1.1
I've updated my packages to emerillon 0.1.1, available here: http://fatal.se/tmp/pkg-emerillon/emerillon_0.1.1-1.dsc or for the binary: http://fatal.se/tmp/pkg-emerillon/emerillon_0.1.1-1_amd64.deb (Please beware of http://bugs.debian.org/575384 and make sure libethos-ui-1.0-0 is installed in your build environment.) It would be nice to get a statup update for the emerillon ITP! It seems people are currently standing in line to get this package into Debian. Bug#472802: Status of limesurvey packaging (Was: Bug#472802: What's happening?)
On Tue, 23 Mar 2010, Nicolas Barcet wrote: I am sorry, but since I have been failing getting this package in Debian, without any reasons displayed or communicated, What did you actually tried to get this package into Debian? Did you asked for a sponsor? I have seen several people (including DDs) interested but there was no such signal like I'm read with packaging, it works, could somebody please test and upload. I don't see any reason to keep on updating this package except when I need to use it, which happens about once or twice a year. That's fair. There is no reasons why this is not in collab-maint appart from the fact that I don't have time to research how to get commit rights on it. If I'm not missleaded you just need to ask for an alioth.debian.org account. A short Google search leaded me to http://wiki.debian.org/Alioth/PackagingProject which seems to be a good starting point. So that you know, configurations files of limesurvey have never been identical from one version to the other and I have always had to redo the patches. I guess that's a bit boring and makes maintenance harder - it would be nice if somebody who really uses the package would take over maintenance.
