Announce - SSP/ProPolice compiler for Woody
Hi, Following the interest in my recent post about rebuilding Debian from source using a patched compiler I thought I'd announce the availability of gcc-3.3 with the SSP patches. (SSP is the new name for the work formerly called ProPolice). The packages may be downloaded via the following source: # # SSP / ProPolice GCC and supporting packages. # deb http://people.debian.org/~skx/apt ./ deb-src http://people.debian.org/~skx/apt ./ and the work itself is described at the following URL: http://shellcode.org/Cat/ Any feedback welcome. Okay, I was being a bit facetious there, but if you insist on taking me seriously, I suspect that the pronunciation of the project initiator is, at least in the case of Debian, more correct than most alternatives. In particular, because the etymology is from a contraction of Deborah and Ian[1], pronouncing it as the first three letters of each of those names seems appropriate. Re: Proposed change to debian release system
Hi, I think a problem is the difference between stable software and stable distro... i.e.: perl 5.8 is the stable release of perl, but it isn't into the stable distro, because managing a distro to be stable requires packages not to being upgraded... I think the idea of the Current release would be good if it is automatic, just like testing... but that would require maintainers to inform the upstream status (unstable/stable) of the software and a dynamic distro with all the software that is upstream-stable would fit... I don't know if this is too hard to do, but certainly It would be nice to people that doesn't like to have unstable software, but like having recent software... In this way, Current would be never released, but would have the most recent stable software (but it wouldn't be a stable distro after all). In particular, the process is already such that if we get even near something that fits this description of current, a big party will be thrown and that something will be frozen to become the next stable within a short timeframe. Everybody seems to agree that new stable versions *should* be out about every 6 months. The problem of getting testing into a freezeable state is not going to go away simply by calling the goal current instead of stable. -- Henning Makholm What has it got in its pocketses?

The md5sum files inside the package as they are now can be generated at install time by anyone who wishes to have them. It recently occured to me that that would be a Nice Feature(tm), or do I have a flaw in that idea? I think IMAP on large mailboxes could be quite resource consuming, especially stuff like SEARCH. It could work if there was a backend optimized for this. However, I don't think there is. Besides, NNTP is better-suited for it, and BTW is already available at www.gmane.org. -- John

Hi! I have put my alternative packages of the Linux kernel in an APT repository in gluck, so that interested people can use it untill the ftp-masters enable the overrides. Lines for your sources.list file: deb http://people.debian.org/~rmh/debian ./ deb-src http://people.debian.org/~rmh/debian ./ Available packages: kernel-linux-experimental (dummy package, depends on 2.4) kernel-linux-experimental-2.4 kernel-linux-experimental-2.6 (still inmature) For those of you who haven't heard of my alternative packages of the Linux kernel, please read: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200311/msg00204.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200311/msg00414.html Take care: a really long (and mostly useless) flame follows in the latter -- Robert Millan [..] but the delight and pride of Aule is in the deed of making, and in the thing made, and neither in possession nor in his own mastery; wherefore he gives and hoards not, and is free from care, passing ever on to some new work. -- J.R.R.T, Ainulindale (Silmarillion) signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Thanks for making my life a lot easier :) * Updated Juanjo's alg patch (which is now a single patch instead of multiple small ones). * Removed my patch to fix the gcc 3.x log conflict, this has now also been done upstream. * Don't ship the various documentation files from the alg and NAT Traversal patches in the debian/ directory of the source package, they are added by the patches anyway. * Disable the NAT Traversal patch for now because it has large problems with 2.04 upstream (most probably because of the changes needed to integrate Herbert's work). I can not fix this immediately, so I will either have to wait until Mathieu Lafon updates his patch or try to do it myself, which means digging deeply into the pluto and kernel code However, this has to wait because there are some bugs to fix in this package, and we've been told to do it quickly :) Closes: #219007: freeswan-modules-source: NAT_TRAVERSAL sould be disabled with newer kernel-source packages * Forward-port Mathieu's notify-delete patch myself: use plog instead of log (as with my old log-conflicts patch) and replace st_connection.(this|that) by st_connection.spd.(this|that), which should fix the compile problems. * Finally apply patch to fix the build on ia64. Sorry that it took so long, I somehow managed to look over this bug. It is untested but should not break stuff. Closes: #203339: freeswan_2.01-1(unstable/ia64): FTBFS: int format, different type arg * I am not aware that I said that kernel-headers were enough to build the freeswan-modules-source package, and I don't think that make-kpkg does that in its default configuration. Anyway, document that the real kernel soures (the unpacked kernel) tree is needed to build the modules in README.Debian and add a Recommends: kernel-source so that it should be clear. If this is in policy violation for *-source packages, then I need some help in fixing this. Closes: #211935: FTB modules package for kernel-headers-2.4.22* Closes: #209167: Can not build modules, or? * Define the CONFIG_IPSEC_ALG_* macros for the kernel configuration in freeswan-modules-source with 1 instead of just defining them. Closes: #218998: freeswan-modules-source: Definition of CONFIG_IPSEC_ALG_* * Include french debconf translations and remove some default fields from being translated where it doesn't make sense. Closes: #200119: freeswan: Please switch to gettext-based debconf templates Closes: #200727: freeswan: Please switch to gettext-based debconf templates + french translation Closes: #213479: freeswan: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation * Suggest ipsec-tools (because setkey is needed when the native IPSec stack is used). * A bug with handling 4096 bit keys has been solved by upstream, after the report has been forwarded to them. I have received a message from Hugh Redelmeier that it has been fixed, but can not find the mentioned bug report #254 in their GNATS bug database. Closes: #208165: freeswan - buffer for TXT rrs too short * Finally get rid of the duplicate HTML files in the doc directory (they are not really duplicate, rather one set is created from the other by the install script).
