Re: Proper way of closing *old* bugs

2006-04-09 Thread Stephen Samuel
It seems to me that, in this case (and correct me if I'm wrong), the
package hasn't been updated from upstream for a long time, and so the
difference between the old version and the new version fixes the stack
of old bugs (( even though it wasn't _this specific version_ where the
bug was fixed )).

Now, if the bug has been (contrary to my reading) fixed for a long time,
and just not reported as fixed, then I can see it being misleading to
fix the bug via the changelog.

If it's a case of being lazy, then you can just something like:

while read bug notes ; do
( echo bug $bug was fixed a long time ago ; echo  $notes | fmt ) |
Mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

done  EOF
42 A mouse did it
31415 Used a circular log
42923 Mikie did it.
EOF

But the correct method of closing bugs is to send a message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the explanation of the fix and not in
the changelog. Well, at least not in the way you seem to intend. The
bugs closed in changelogs are suppose to be bugs closed due to the
changes from the previous version to the current version. If you only
mean to do,

* Close bugs that were fixed VERY long time ago (closes:
#123,#234,#345,#456,#567,#678,#789,)

then I don't think that is appropriate use of the changelog.

Closing bugs through the changelog is an officially supported method
and most DDs close bugs that way. Submitters receive a detailed
notification by email as soon as the package is uploaded.

I have no special mean to close bugs without informing the submitters
with a clear and detailed explanation as I always did with all my
packages.

I'm stunned that anyone still thinks that closing unrelated bugs in a
changelog is a good idea. [EMAIL PROTECTED] sends the detailed close message
to the submitter, and it doesn't make it look like the problem was fixed in
that version (which, of course, it wasn't).

My question is, is it now appropriate to use the changelog as a crutch
to close bugs that have nothing to do with the upload? I was always
under impression that *old* bugs should be closed by sending an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] saying that you are closing it because it was
fixed some time ago, etc.. etc..

Absolutely.

There's some debate over whether closing upstream bugs in the changelog is
OK, like so:

  * New upstream version. (Closes: #N)
- The bar is now frobbed correctly. (Closes: #X)
- No longer trip over our shoelaces. (Closes: #Y)
  * Random package installation failures stopped. (Closes: #)

Some people think that it shouldn't be done ever, since it's not a change
that the maintainer explicitly made, but others think that it's OK when done
like that shown above, as it preserves all of the useful information.

But I can't think of *any* discussion which has ended with people claiming
that closing random bugs is OK in an upload. How would you even describe it
in the changelog?

  * The bug has magically disappeared. (Closes: #NNN)

Uhhh... I doubt it.

- Matt

So the end result of this is that pkg-config is great for extracting

has the risk you might actually remove an entry you do actually depend

What we need is an option follow requires for cflags but not for libs.

soon OK).

I've not touched decompyle2.2, boot-floppies, libapache{,2}-mod-python,
that hadn't any bug open related to python2.1 and python2.2 drop. I've
(currently at least) not opened bugs to those 4 packages, feel free to
do so.

 #1 sane packages redirect mail via /etc/aliases
 #2 un-aliased mail to systemusers (e.g. spam) is not accepted and
 dumped into /var/mail/systemuser but rejected immediately (at SMTP
 time).

 I'm not aware of any package inserting its system users into
 /etc/aliases, and in fact, my sid chroot doesn't even have that file.

They shouldn't, unless they want to receive mail for the system-user
account.

 So unless I'm wrong here, a general mechanism to redirect/reject mail
 to such users should be invented. Maybe adduser could do that?

Policy 11.6. /etc/aliases is the source file for the system mail
aliases (e.g., postmaster, usenet, etc.), it is the one which the
sysadmin and postinst scripts may edit.

And indeed e.g. clamav or inn2 will add itself to it (if it exists.)

ok, done.

I'd also like to alert debian-python about #351149 and #351150. Those
were fixed in a quite short period, but Lustin did not found any

maybe someone from debian-python can step up as a sponsor ? I offered

It could be true that I didn't look very hard - I moved to a different

as to be able to pursue this as it should have been.

I'm sure there are some closed-source apps out there that try to

 Even better (IMHO) is the full term Amateur Radio, but some may

Hi,

At the moment, the following environment variable needs to be allowed
in order to preserve previous pbuilder behavior:

DEB_*

PATH

It's one possibility to ask every user to configure their sudo
configuration using visudo to allow these. Is there anything besides
documenting that pbuilder package can do?

Bug#361761: ITP: libcgi-application-plugins-perl -- Plugins for CGI::Application

2006-04-09 Thread Jaldhar H. Vyas
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Jaldhar H. Vyas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libcgi-application-plugins-perl
  Version : 0.1
  Upstream Author : Jaldhar H. Vyas (collector) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : N/A
* License : GPL/Artistic
  Description : Plugins for CGI::Application

  This package is a collection of some plugin modules to enhance
  CGI::Appliation which is a perl framework for, well, CGI Applications.
  Currently the following modules are included:

  CGI::Application::Plugin::Authentication - Authentication framework

  CGI::Application::Plugin::Authorization - Authorization framework

  CGI::Application::Plugin::AutoRunmode - Provides an easy way to add run modes

  CGI::Application::Plugin::Config::Simple - Add Config::Simple support

  CGI::Application::Plugin::DBH - Easy DBI access

  CGI::Application::Plugin::Forward - Pass control from one run mode to another

  CGI::Application::Plugin::LogDispatch - Add Log::Dispatch support

  CGI::Application::Plugin::Session - Add CGI::Session support

  CGI::Application::Plugin::TT - Add Template Toolkit support

  CGI::Application::Plugin::ValidateRM - Validate run modes using
  Data::FormValidator

I modeled this package on libcatalyst-modules-perl because I figured 10
seperate source packages for closely related modules would probably be a bit
much.

Architecture: source i386
Version: 51

Maintainer: Debian Install System Team debian-boot@lists.debian.org
Changed-By: Frans Pop [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
 partman-auto - Automatically partition storage devices (partman) (udeb)
Changes:
 partman-auto (51) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Also set free_type in wipe_disk as that is needed by the function
 create_primary_partitions. This allows partman-auto-lvm to actually create
 the /boot partition as a primary partition.
   * Allow to include definitions of partitions in regular recipes that should
 only be used for a certain type of auto partitioning. This is useful to
 allow e.g. a definition for a /boot partition to be included that is not
 to be used for regular auto partitioning, but is needed for auto-lvm.
 The actual implementation is in reverse as that seems more flexible: a
 partition can be marked using $typeignore (where type is default or
 lvm) and will then not be included. Multiple ignore marks are possible.
 To implement this, the functions choose_recipe and decode_recipe now take
 an extra argument indicating the type of autopartitioning being done.
   * Add myself to uploaders.
