Modifying the package so it sends the data to a Debian server running the same/similar software to Fedora's sounds reasonable though. Not completely sure that there's much benefit to maintaining separate servers for Debian data and Fedora data -- but *reporting* the data separate would probably be a good thing if the proportion of Fedora users with smolt is significantly different to the proportion of Debian users with smolt. (That's because making a mistake on that score would be both easy if the data were combined, and lead to wrong comparisons between total Debian and Fedora users, to the detriment of whoever has the lower proportion of users running smolt, which would presumably be Debian) Integrating it with pop-con (or vice-versa) would be interesting. Re: stupid dependencies on update-inetd
I don't know exactly how it happened, but a large number of maintainers apparently ignored the discussions on this list and added to their packages a dependency on update-inetd. Are you asking for a flamewar? I really don't see any justification for beeing attacked by you in such a way. The fact is simple: I don't read this list (lack of time and lack of interest in flamepostings like yours), therefore i do not know about any discussions on this list and therefore i didn't know that i did wrong. So its an affront to accuse me of ignoring a discussion. Get yourself some manners. In fact i replaced the dependency on inetd with a dependency on update-inetd some time ago because i felt this to be right we. I even checked with the inetd-maintainer. My package needs the update-inetd binary and depending on update-inetd surely seemed the right way because my impression was that update-inetd would be the new package to depend on when one needs update-ineted. If you want to fix the situation, try to write a nicely worded advice what to do. If you only want to spread flames, then f... off. I'm now really pissed by our flame attempt, because i haven't done wrong really. RFH: Debiandoc SGML (debiandoc-sgml) and UTF-8 transition
Hi, (Reply-To: debian-devel@lists.debian.org) This is call for help for DebianDOC SGML infrastructure update to cope with new UTF-8 environment for lenny. (Especially for PS and PDF output.) The volunteer should have some understandings on: * SGML * perl * POSIX shell * encoding (traditional, UTF-8) * LaTeX (if possible latex-cjk-* knowledge) * Basic Debian packaging But before all these technicalities, one need to have time, patience and willingness to learn new things. (That is the only thing I had when I took care this package initially.) There are many key Debian documentations which still use DebianDOC SGML so this is needed functionality unless everyone moves to DocBook XML quickly. Please note I have already added XML conversion functionalities to current debiandoc-sgml so user can convert their document to XML. With help from iconv and vim, you can convert document relatively easy as W. Martin Borgert showed us for developer-reference. Since this tool chain comes from old days, this is not UTF-8 friendly. Also recent texlive move seems to have broke Korean build. I know this Korean situation is possibly fixed by changing package to use: hfont-CJK. ( debiandoc-sgml: /usr/share/perl5/DebianDoc_SGML/Locale/ko_KR.eucKR/LaTeX 'before begin document' = '\\usepackage{CJK}') But the generated PS/PDF file can not be seen properly under UTF-8 easily. I guess there is a better way to accommodate these PS or PDF to display properly in UTF-8. This encoding issue is true for all other packages. It is easy to change this tool to produce UTF-8 for text and HTML while converting source file but backward compatibility of the tool will be the issue. So the best solution is to make this tool switchable. For me, I am not so interested to make such extensive work on this package. My future work will use DocBook XML with UTF-8, po4a. So anyone is willing to work on this, please let me know. The file is actually copied from a symlink during the packaging process: lrwxrwxrwx 34 2007-05-23 00:00 install-sh - /usr/share/automake-1.9/install-sh You would also need to require that ALL LGPL packages using automake would have to be licensed under the GPL because, by this measure, they include GPL code. I use the same build method for libqof1, pilot-qof, gpe-expenses. It is also used in other GPE packages and other automake/autotools based packages that I have worked on elsewhere. In every case, install-sh is unchanged from the automake file. I don't see that it makes sense to carry copyright information into every single package that uses automake in this way. The script isn't compiled into the program, it doesn't form part of the distributed binaries, it is part of the build system - much like gcc or dpkg or bash or automake itself. The only difference is that this script needs to exist within the source directory - if anything, that could be considered a bug in automake, maybe the script should actually be able to run from /usr/bin. True, you cannot (currently) build the package without install-sh but then you can't build it without automake, autoconf or dpkg either. It could also be considered as an automake bug that the 'make dist' target requires install-sh to be copied into the .orig.tar.gz when it could (presumably) just as easily be copied into place when automake is first run during the build itself. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgpqXwfAEQkgQ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Cause the inetd disease I locally created a If you want a system without an inetd then do not it install one and do not install packages depending on it. It's really that easy. Sorry but I think you didn't understand what I tryed to explain. The problem is not to not have a inetd installed. The problem is that there are many inetd out there. One is the xinetd which is replacing a traditional inetd completely. But today the traditional inetd has to be installed too. Xinetd do disable such a inetd in postinstall script. However. What I did explain is that xinetd do not need to have a update-inetd as the configuration is done with single files for single packages. But for legacy the inetd.conf have to be updated too in any postinstall of any package which might run under inetd so there is the point that you NEED this update-inetd in postinstall independent if you ever need it for the package or if you just suggest inetd as the software CAN run under it. So the dependencies are hysterical^Whistorical grown but not good. But today the traditional inetd has to be installed too. Xinetd do disable such a inetd in postinstall script. Yes, the xinetd package needs to be integrated with the rest of Debian. However. What I did explain is that xinetd do not need to have a update-inetd as the configuration is done with single files for single packages. No, it needs an update-inetd program which can create configuration files in the appropriate format. - -- ciao, Marco -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGrMdAFGfw2OHuP7ERAm6WAJ9KyWAnFl9UPwT7a0sJ53Ax437mRQCePYf/ CtQ0T8fD3TP6J5QA6hHdxHY= =6Y6W -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Honestly, it is a bit weird - but a fact of the release system - that testing is actually *behind* stable in the particular case. If you want to run absolutely bleeding edge code, you have to run unstable; there's no way around it. Otherwise, you still have to wait for testing and stabilization of packages. In my experience, that solves more problems than it creates; I run testing on my primary desktop for the additional stability and run unstable on my other systems so that I can test. This is the problem - most users (mission-critical servers excepted) want to get certain updates on an as-needed or wanted basis. Sometimes this is absolutely necessary especially towards the end of a release's lifespan when most new hardware simply won't work without certain updates. However, they DON'T want a system in constant flux where some major component could break any minute, which is what unstable or even testing is. Anyway, I guess I'm getting the impression that Debian and its users are more oriented towards the mission-critical server than the average desktop user. I.e. - you're competing more with OpenBSD than with Windows Vista or even Ubuntu (which is, of course, Debian-based). That's fine with me - I definitely know Debian would be my first choice for a mission-critical server. However, my concern is more towards the desktop, and as such I may continue to investigate other distributions. I appreciate what you're doing - keep up the good work... Tim

Bugs being closed but still outstanding
Hi, I am perplexed by this. If you go to http://bugs.debian.org/hpodder, you will see under the outstanding bugs section, several bugs that have been closed for some time. These bugs remain closed (were not reopened), the BTS page for each bug knows about that, yet they are still listed under the outstanding bugs section. Why is that? Re: Non-security updates between stable releases?
In the case of Iceweasel, stable already has 2.0.0.5, as this was a security update. There is supposed to be a testing security team, but evidently they haven't gotten around to the Iceweasel fix. Honestly, it is a bit weird - but a fact of the release system - that testing is actually *behind* stable in the particular case. Isn't this why the testing security team was formed, to address situations where there needs to be security fixes for testing like this? Is it still operational? If so, I'm just curious if they need help, as this is one area that could improve desktop usage - having a testing distribution that can reasonably be used (which includes security fixes). Additionally, on the topic of Sid desktop usability - the Debian site says it's not recommended, and many people have reported breakage in various areas. Also, Sid tends to undergo rapid change - i.e. glibc, X, the kernel, etc may be updated a few times in a matter of months. It's something that is definitely fine for a Debian developer - or maybe even advanced users - but not exactly something you want to put on the average desktop. On the other hand, Stable is often so out-of-date that it can't be installed on new hardware (this may not be the case now, but 6 months ago it was the case with Sarge). So, in my view as a mortal user, it seems like something needs to be done. Even with a shorter release cycle (12 months?), this would still be a long time to wait for updates for desktop users. That's why I brought up the ideas I did... Let me know if anything is going on in these areas. I must emphasize that my concerns are not necessarily about me, but about desktop users in general. Once again, thanks to the Debian developers for their work and openness in responding to my inquiries. Tim
