I assume that you are talking about getting your software into the
official Debian repositories, so I'll describe this procedure.

First, in order for a particular to become part of Debian, it has to
be packaged. This means, someone needs to write a number of scripts
which go into a directory called debian. These scripts will compile
your package and build a Debian package (.deb). Furthermore, the
debian directory contains a changelog describing the changes of the
package, a so-called control file which tells the package manager
about the dependencies (i.e. other Debian packages which have to be
installed as well for your package to work) and many more files
(depending on the particular type of package).

After the package has been built and it meets the quality standards
for packages in Debian, it can be uploaded by a Debian Developer (DD)
into the Debian archives where it will become available for
installation in Debian unstable (and Debian testing and eventually
Debian stable).

If you are not a Debian Developer, you can still have your packages
uploaded into Debian through the means of Debian mentors [1]. Debian
mentors is a repository where newbies can upload their packages and
ask Debian Developers to sponsor these, which means reviewing and
eventually uploading these packages. Once you have gained enough
experience and self-confidence - after uploading more packages to
Debian through sponsored uploads through Debian mentors - you can
eventually apply to become a Debian Developer yourself.

Anyway, in your case I would suggest you get into contact with the
Debian Developer who maintains the package webhttrack [2] (you find
his email address on this website). Since your application is a GUI
for the webhttrack package, it might make sense that he maintains the
GUI for it as well.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Adrian

Re: feedback

2012-12-25 Thread jamie
Your logic is inherently flawed.

Fact is, if you do you research you will find that Ubuntu is built from Debian,
thus is a form of it.

Reality is Ubuntu when it first came was very little more than a version of
Debian packaged to be easier to use and install, and slowly is has gained more
unique features and characteristics to extent where Ubuntu is somewhat more
distinct.

However, you get under the hood, you still will find it has the debian base.

Everytime you install package in Ubuntu, is installed using the Debian package
manager!

Ubuntu is a form of Debian your f.. a...h..e.

Ubuntu you may find easier to use, but it relies on Debian base to be what it
is.

So stop throwing abuse at people who make what you use possible, because that's
exactly what you are doing criticising and abusing the Debian developers! If I
could I would personally ensure that you had no access to anything Debian
developers have created for you're idiotic and ignorant attitudes, and if I did
that, it would mean you had no Ubuntu, would be such a shame, er not!

 Merry Christmas!

I am not a Debian developer, per se; so perhaps I shouldn't even
respond. I follow this list, but do not normally post to it.
Then again, since I have written some Debian documentation (albeit none
of it is official), perhaps I should.

(1) Official Debian version numbers are not normally assigned until the
release becomes the stable release. Until then, the only way to refer to a
specific testing release (other than by the generic name testing,
which is regularly reassigned to the next release once the previous
testing release becomes stable) is by using the release code name,
such as wheezy, which is the current testing release at the time of
this writing.

(2) The correspondence between release code names and official version
numbers can be found in the Debian FAQ, point 6.2, entitled
What are all those names like etch, lenny, etc.?. Here is a link
to this item in the on-line version of the Debian FAQ:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-ftparchives.en.html#s-codenames

As you can see, squeeze is the last code name which has an assigned
version number, which is 6.0. That is due to the fact that squeeze
is the current stable release. The current testing release, wheezy,
and the one after that, jessie, do not yet have official version numbers
assigned. They can only be referred to by their code names at this point.
And documentation for squeeze that was written before squeeze became the
stable release could only refer to squeeze by its code name. Are you
saying that no documentation should ever be written until a release becomes
the stable release? I think not. It is best to ask questions rather
than criticize something you don't understand. Incidentally, most
other distributions use release code names too.

(3) Watch your mouth. The use of foul language on Debian mailing
lists is prohibited in the Debian mailing list code of conduct,
available here:

   http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/#codeofconduct

(4) Someone who can't spell, or who doesn't bother to proof-read his
work, is on thin ice criticizing someone else's writing.

I think it more likely that he's saying It's obvious what number is going to be
assigned to the next released version, so you should use that version number
even before the release.

I'm not saying he's right - sarge was assigned version 3.1, for example, and
other non-'x.0' releases have been made in the past - but that seems more like
an argument that someone might actually make.

 This tool allows a user to choose between Qt4 or Qt5 at build time.

This was a huge step in the right direction from upstream to allow us distros

 If I am new to Debian and go to read the manual and I see 'Squeeze',
 do you think I am going to know what the fuck that means?

Do you actually need to know what that means, except being the name of the
release?

I have never known the actual version numbers, I've never actually
needed to know them. Just knowing the last stable, current testing,
and next testing has always been enough for me. And that's easy to
find out which is which.

 This is a classic case of computer nerds lacking social skills.

Using version numbers would be more lacking social skills. People
prefer nicknames, not versions.

2012-12-25 Thread Russ Allbery
Samuel Thibault sthiba...@debian.org writes:

 Using version numbers would be more lacking social skills. People

Version numbers are more useful the less familiar you are with the OS
because they have a well-defined order. I've never needed them for
Debian, but, for example, I find the Mac OS X naming system rather
frustrating. I rarely deal with Mac OS X, so when those who do start
talking about it, I'm usually left slightly baffled because I can't figure
out the ordering of names like Lion, Snow Leopard, or Mountain Lion.
This is particularly frustrating during in-person conversations (on-line,
I can just look it up).

(If people's imagination are failing them about why this would matter in
conversation, consider statements like I think that feature was
introduced in lenny or that should be fixed in wheezy or that system
is still running etch, and then consider the same statements with the
codenames replaced by version numbers and notice how much easier it is to
understand the context of that statement if you happen to know your local
system is running Debian 6 when you don't know any of the release names.)

Thankfully, Debian provides a perfectly reasonable version numbering
system (as, for that matter, does Apple), so all one has to do is remember
to use it with the uninitiated. For example, our internal metrics on
adoption and migration to new OS releases that are sent to management
refer to Debian 5 and Debian 6 (and soon Debian 7) rather than
lenny, squeeze, or wheezy.

It's worth noting that I never have the problem with Ubuntu that I have
with Mac OS X, despite having very little interaction with Ubuntu, since I
can always recover the ordering from the first character of the nickname.

Bug#696690: ITP: mp3cat -- reads, writes, splits and combines MP3 files

2012-12-25 Thread Nick Leverton
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Nick Leverton n...@leverton.org

* Package name: mp3cat
  Version : 0.5
  Upstream Author : Tom Clegg t...@tomclegg.net
* URL : http://tomclegg.net/mp3cat
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : reads, writes, splits and combines MP3 files

 mp3cat can read a stream from standard input and write to standard
 output. Instead of standard output, mp3cat can store MP3 data across
 multiple timestamped files in a directory (an mp3dir) and another
 instance can follow the stream from there.
 .
 Also, mp3cat only outputs MP3 frames with valid headers, even if
 there is extra garbage in its input stream. This fixes up time/frame
 estimates in a stream created by simply concatenating mp3 files or by
 other utilities that add app-specific frames.

Re: openmotif is now LGPL, retirement of lesstif in jessie?

2012-12-25 Thread Graham Inggs
Hi Paul

Paul Gevers elbrus at debian.org writes:

  The openmotif package has recently been orphaned since the maintainer
  is MIA.

 Not quite, the maintainer said he didn't have time anymore. It is a
 detail anyway.

My apologies, I assumed the package becoming orphaned was a result of me
emailing the MIA team back in September.

  I have been working on a new packaging of the LGPL motif from scratch
  using dh.

 Why from scratch? Take the good things from the current package, but
 indeed, I would like to switch to dh(1) as well. I am currently working
 on getting the current package fit for multiarch and hardening enabled.

I started from scratch by switching to dh, and then then used what was still
required from the existing packages in Debian and Ubuntu.

The results of my efforts have now been published here:
https://launchpad.net/~ginggs/+archive/ppa

  I would like to see the openmotif package renamed to motif

 What do others on this list think? I think openmotif as the source
 package name is a fine, but I don't really care. The only thing that I
 like about keeping the name is that the history of the package is better
 linked in the PTS and such.

My feeling is that openmotif as such, no longer exists.

 I do appreciate your effort, but currently Joël Bertrand is the one in
 the orphan bug [1], stating his intent to adopt (although he forgot to
 retitle and own the bug). I proposed to him (no response yet) to make
 this a team effort, do you want to join? I really would like to get the
 packaging in a VCS, e.g. on Alioth in the collab-maint project.

I would be happy to join a team effort.

Regards
Graham

Hi,

I havent received any response about my ITA message for Jabberd2 (see

It seems the current maintainer is MIA.
Is it possible someone of the pkg-xmpp-devel group can reply?

I would like to adopt it, but must get a chance to get so ;)

 Now a new version of udns is uploaded into unstable, I hope we can
 update jabberd2 also.

 I have placed a new version online:

 I hope you can check if it is valid and upload if it is.
 If not, I will correct it ;)

Differing behaviour of shells regarding simple commands with parameter assignments

2012-12-25 Thread Timo Weingärtner
Hi,

I just stepped over a difference between bash and busybox. To illustrate I
wrote this simple script:

--
#!/bin/sh

bar () { echo -n $foo; }

foo=1
bar
foo=2 bar
bar
--

bash, zsh, posh output 121

busybox sh, dash, (m)ksh output 122

checkbashisms doesn't complain.

Which of the three is wrong? Where shall I file bugs?

When bar is not a function but an external script the output is 121 with all
the shells.

Thanks. If I read that correctly bash, zsh, posh are wrong, but I see that
changing that might cause trouble.

As this might be a source for subtle errors, especially when external scripts
are turned into shell functions or vice versa, would you find it useful to add
a warning to checkbashisms?

Possible portable workarounds might be (depending on what is expected):
* foo=2; bar
* (foo=2 bar)
* oldfoo=$foo; foo=2; bar; foo=$oldfoo; unset oldfoo
with the last one hopefully being rarely needed.

Description:
 squeak-vm - The Squeak Smalltalk System (virtual machine)
Changes:
 squeak-vm (1:4.10.2.2614-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   [ upstream ]
   * New upstream release.
 Changes since last packaged release:
 + Support building and installing VMs for 64-bit images.
 + UUIDPlugin can use uuid_create().
 + Link squeakvm against libiconv if necessary.
 + Search /usr/local and /usr/pkg for headers and libs.
 + Rename aio.h - sqaio.h.
 + Allow the interpreter VM to execute format 6505 images.
 + More robust check for freetype2 headers.
 + Allow a headless image to change the size of the Display.
 + Compute gmt offset when tm_gmtoff not available on Solaris.
 + Interpreter source updated to VMMaker 4.10.2.
 + Fixes to build process for compatibility with most recent
   subversion client and bizarre situations with uuid.h on some Linux
   distributions.
 + Obsolete autotools files removed.
 + New plugins for Scratch support: WeDoPlugin, CameraPlugin,
   ScratchPlugin.
 + Trailing NUL not included when copying strings into Squeak via
   locale.
 + Re-enable gcc optimisations for fdlibm (FloatMathPlugin).
 + SerialPlugin ensures descriptor close and enforces limit on max
   open ports.
 + UUIDPlugin refuses to load if uuid_generate() would cause a
   segmentation fault.
 + Mpeg3Plugin never uses pthreads.
 + Main window clips by children for the convenience of OpenGL
   subwindows.
 .
   [ Jonas Smedegaard ]
   * Add watch file.
   * Add control file Vcs-* fields: Packaging moved to Git.
   * Add get-orig-source target, using CDBS upstream-tarball.mk snippet.
   * Add myself as uploader.
   * Stop including or build-depending on quilt (patching handled by dpkg
 with source version 3.0).
   * Drop patch to reenable-gcc-optimisations: Applied upstream.
   * Unfuzz/refresh patches with shortening quilt options.
   * Fix avoid removing files added by linex patch.
   * Ease git-buildpackage integration:
 + Git-ignore quilt .pc dir.
 + Enable use of signed tags and pristine-tar.
   * Put aside convenience code copies during build (not remove them as
 done in NMU: missing files complicates building with
 git-buildpackage).
   * Rename patch to avoid embedded libraries, and improve its DEP3
 header.
   * Simplify packaging, using CDBS.
   * Add patch fix_printf_syntax to improve printf syntax: Fails with
 hardened build options.
   * Relax to build-depend unversioned on debhelper and cmake: Needed
 versions satisfied in stable, and oldstable no longer supported.
   * Bump debhelper compatibility level to 8.
   * Update README.source: Replace obsolete dpatch note with references
 to CDBS and git-buildpackage.
   * Fix respect nostrip DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS option.
   * Merge linex patch into debian packaging.
   * Bump standards-version to 3.9.4.
   * Build-depend on dh-buildinfo, to help debug independently from
 central Debian resources.

 frei0r (1.3-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   [ upstream ]
   * New upstream release.
 Hightlights since last packaging release:
 + New filters:
   - alpha0ps (alpha0ps, alphagrad, alphaspot)
   - c0rners
   - coloradj
   - d90stairsteppingfix
   - defish0r
   - denoise (hqdn3d)
   - facebl0r
   - lightgraffiti
   - measure (Pr0be, Pr0file)
   - select0r
   - sharpness
   - sopsat
 + New generators:
   - test_pat (broadcast test patterns)
 * New mixer:
   - addition_alpha
 + Better documentation.
 + Better examples for writing code that makes use of thed opencv
   library.
 .
   [ Jonas Smedegaard ]
   * Friendly takeover, on behalf of the Debian Multimedia Maintainers.
 + Update Maintainer, Uploader and Vcs-* control fields.
 Thanks for your past contributions, Luca Bigliardi.
   * Add git-buildpackage config, enabling signed tags and pristine-tar,
 and filtering out upstream .gitignore file. Drop earlier odd config
 in root dir.
   * Drop obsolete DM-Upload-Allowed control field.
   * Soft-include CDBS upstream-tarball.mk snippet, to provide
 get-orig-source target.
   * Add watch file.
   * Relax to build-depend unversioned on debhelper and libgavl-dev:
 Needed versions satisfied in stable, and oldstable no longer
 supported.
   * Add a bunch of bug-fix patches cherry-picked from upstream VCS.
   * Build-depend on autotools-dev (and not libtool, automake or
 autoconf), and drop sloppy autoreconf introduced in
 1.1.22git20091109-1.2.
   * Build-depend on dh-buildinfo, to help debug independently from
 central Debian resources.
   * Bump debhelper compatibility level to 8.
   * Bump standards-version to 3.9.4.
   * Git-ignore quilt .pc dir.
   * Use source format 3.0 (quilt).
   * Build-depend on libopencv-dev (and not libcv-dev, libcvaux-dev or
 libhighgui-dev).
   * Build-depend on doxygen, and build html documentation.
   * Fix install docs below /usr/share (not /usr/share/doc).
