I've seen that too, often all at once (dependencies of a NEW node-foo),
and server-side procmail or sieve filters can mitigate this, as can
client-side rules. Honestly I thought that being able to cope with
large quantities of email--researching new solutions and implementing
them if necessary--was part of job description of doing Debian work,
even though it's also true that one does not need to read most of that
mail let alone reply to it.

+1 It sends the wrong message if we have a bug in commonly used software
on the default desktop that is so severe that people discuss
accommodating this bug with infrastructure changes rather than fixing
the buggy software. Between Evolution, Thunderbird, and Geary, isn't
Evolution the one that is supposed to be the most business-friendly, and
shouldn't business-friendly also mean that it scales to high-volume
lists?

Re: What are desired semantics for /etc/shells?

When I was looking into this specific case for
, and looked
for packages accessing that file, I was surprised by the amount of uses
it had. There was also for example a new usage proposed in
to help remove bash from the essential
set.

BTW I think the BSD man pages are helpful in clarifying its
historically intended use, f.ex:

Given the historic BSD and the current usage and documentation on
non-BSD systems, I'd say it's supposed to be the list of valid login
shells on the system, where valid, to me, implies present and also
sanctioned by the sysadmin. So shell packages should add themselves
once on first install, and remove themselves on remove, and should
thus preserve whether the sysadmin disabled the entry.

This makes it possible for the shell to be installed to satisfy
dependencies, while the sysadmin disallowing its usage as a login
shell, as part of its operational policies or similar, for example.

As mentioned above, for the installation bootstrap stuff, the first
idea that came to mind was adding support for something like
/etc/shells.d/, but after looking for existing users, realized this
was impractical, as the /etc/shells interfaces is rather entrenched
and much code reads from it directly (either hardcoded or via say
_PATH_SHELLS) instead of going through an API like getusershell(3),
so it could not be abstracted within say glibc.

So I agree that generating it from fragments placed elsewhere (say
under /usr), would be better. As I think this should be kept as
sysadmin editable I don't quite like the symlink approach, which in
addition might cause unforeseen issue. But I think preserving the
content should not be difficult, what I think might work is:

 * We'd have:

   - (N) «/etc/shells»,
   - (O) «/var/lib//shells» (or wherever) which is the state,
   - (F) «/usr/share//shells.d/*» (or wherever) which are the
fragment files the shell packages install.

 * dpkg trigger activates after a package modifies files in (F), runs
   update-shells (or similar), which does:

   1) if (N).new exists, forcibly removes it and (O).new,
   2) if (O).new exists, renames it into (O),
   3) parses (O), or if it does not exist assumed to be the same as (N),
   4) parses (N), preserving comment and blank lines, and for each shell
  line:
  - if it exists on the filesystem, add/keep in (O) and (N),
(this covers the local sysadmin addition and fragment

Changes:
 gnome-shell-extension-appindicator (40-1) experimental; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Marco Trevisan (Treviño) ]
   * New upstream release:
 - statusNotifierWatcher: Emit StatusNotifierHostRegistered (and
   Unregistered) signals.
Other signals we were missing for long time, the specs includes these
signals and they should be emitted when the watcher appears/disappears
So do this, although it seems that Qt apps are still ignoring it.
 - indicatorStatusIcon: add polyfill for versionCheck in GNOME 40
 - iconCache: Do not dispose the icon when clearing the cache.
The icon can be a property of the Gio.EmblemedIcon and we should not
dispose it as its parent doesn't support handling the child removal
 - metadata: Remove 40.beta as supported given we support 40 already.
 - promiseUtils: Promptly remove a source if was already cancelled
 - promiseUtils: Disconnect cancellable when the promise is resolved.
In CancellablePromise we were connecting to the cancellable in order to
monitor its cancellation, however we never disconnected from it and this
was causing gjs to keep a reference on the promise itself, being the
scope of the cancellable callback, and thus never garbaging collecting
both the promise and its children (such as GSources).
So, connect earlier to the signal and once we've resolved the promise,
   disconnect form the cancellable.
 - promiseUtils: Disconnect cancellation signal after resolving or
rejecting.
As per the previous commit we do disconnect from cancellation, but this
happens too early so the cancellation event isn't ever tracked.
We need in fact to handle it after that the promise is resolved or
   rejected.
In the rejected case, we need to be extra careful though, as in case
the cancellation happens as per cancellation's ::cancelled signal
callback we need to do this in the next idle cycle or we'll deadlock.
 - prefs: Use es6 class and support Gtk4. GNOME 40 requires it
 - appIndicator: Do not lower opacity on versions after GNOME 40.
There's no such effect upstream anymore so we don't want to switch that
 - appIndicator: Also toggle desaturate effect on mouse hover
 - settingsManager: Move gsettings initializtion to SettingsManager.
Quite simple class for now but it avoids us to initialize a new
   gsettings instance for each indicator
 - appIndicator: Track hover status using native StWidget's hover property
 - IndicatorStatusIcon: Bind hover property with child IconActor.
Whatever happens during hover on the whole indicator (including label)
should affect also the icon, so we can just bind the hover property
 - appIndicator: Use more consistent names for settings updates
 - appIndicator: Cleanup emission of icon signal on status changes.
We were handling this already in a common place, so let's move there
 - appIndicator: Get and expose the accessibility name.
Some indicators (such as the Ayatana appindicator based) may include
accessible descriptions so read and expose them if any or fallback with
   the indicator title otherwise.
 - appIndicator: Do not reload icons when updating the effects applied to
it.
Those are just effects that are not dependent on the icon content, so
we can just update the icon without having check the effects all the
   times.
 - trayIconsManager: Move handling of legacy tray icons into a nicer class.
Also move more into the wrapper AppIndicatorsIndicatorTrayIcon, and use
Shell.TrayManager's unmanage_screen() in newer versions of the shell
instead of relying on the ugly (and unreliable) tray unset + garbage
   collector invocation.
 - indicatorStatusIcon: Use the accessible name or WM class for a11y.
We wrongly passed the indicator unique id as the accessible name to the
shell for ages, we must instead use something that the screen readers
   may use for that.
So, on appindicators we can use the exposed accessible name while for
tray icons we can try use the wm class, even if it could be very generic
 - indicatorStatusIcon: Do not create a menu for tray icons
 - util: Wait for display opened only on X11 setup.
This is actually only relevant for wayland sessions with Xwayland, as
it may lead to opening the X11 display with some delay.
But let's keep it to be a bit more conservative, and unblock the case
for setups with no-x11 at all.
 - appIndicator: Use custom

Debian *does* use parallel builds by default. But that default
behaviour is implemented in dpkg-buildpackage, so doesn't apply in this
case.

That has no effect in this case. The makefile being used is
debian/rules.gen, not debian/rules.

point taken, I guess. OTOH, if, as an admin, I apt install a shell, I'd
assume it to work as a login shell?!? :)

so, installing a shell should add it to /etc/shells and removing the package
should remove it, but admins changes should be preserved on upgrades?

Because no-one thought to add them yet.

Please report this as a bug in the "kernel-handbook" package (which is
the source for this web site). If you can provide a patch, that would
be even better.

My point was not about the technical content of your message, but the
phrasing, that had started to assume an authoritative voice, which could
be misleading.

It's clear you want to get more involved in Debian, and that's great:
have you read ? That lays out the
best ways to get started.

   * Rewrite maintainer scripts without process substitution so that they
can work into a chroot with no /proc (Closes: #973261)

   [ Andreas Beckmann ]
   * Reintroduce libhdf5-103, libhdf5-cpp-103, libhdf5-openmpi-103,
libhdf5-mpich-103 as transitional packages depending on the individual
library packages that were bundled under these names in buster. This is a
workaround for upgrade issues caused by libhdf5-103 (in buster) and
libhdf5-103-1 (in bullseye) not being co-installable. The transitional
packages cannot depend on libhdf5{,-openmpi,-mpich}-fortran100 because
these had the SOVERSION bumped from 100 to 102, but luckily there are no
known users of these libraries in buster (See #988722).
   * Add a new optional symbol to libhdf5*-cpp-103-1.symbols.

Yes.
A number of people have provided a yes without much reasoning.

As an admin, I expect to be able to install a shell, say because I want
to write scripts in it, without allowing users to select it as a login

I expect installing a shell, and remove-shelling that shell to work for
this purpose.

Re: What are desired semantics for /etc/shells?

2021-06-14 Thread Richard Laager

On 6/14/21 7:39 AM, Helmut Grohne wrote:

At this time, my personal preference would be turning /etc/shells into a
symbolic link to an autogenerated file.

Is there a harm in /etc/shells containing shells that are not installed
on the system? If not, then we could ship a single /etc/shells in
base-files and be done with it. The file would only need to change when
a new shell is packaged for Debian, which is infrequent; such a change
would be trivial to make.

One downside would be that third-party repositories, e.g. for a new
shell, could not add to /etc/shells, in a policy-compliant way. That
said, Debian Policy is not binding on them anyway.

If it _is_ harmful for /etc/shells to reference shells that do no exist,
then maintaining the list automatically (by whatever mechanism,
including the current approach but fixing the bugs) makes sense.

When you expect to build a "new" Debian kernel (Hurd ? FreeBSD ?)
because there's too much government agent involved in Debian, that you
complain there's a security hole in Ubuntu (but we are in Debian here)
because your hosting provider's web panel doesn't allow you to connect
without first passing in a SSH key... Then let me say, that pretty much
all of your life is... rocket science ! And you failed much of it.

I still can't understand why would it be easier to build a custom system
to scrape a website than to use either :
apt-mirror / debmirror / aptly
OR
rsync -avH rsync.debian.org/debian/... ./mylocalrepo

I have no personal stake either, the same as the others who already

I have an enhancement proposal to your suggestion.

Add an /etc/shells.add and /etc/shell.remove or somesuch, that are
parsed while generating the proposed /var/ file, that are to
be used by the system administrator to instruct the debianutils trigger
to either remove a shell from the list even if it's installed, or to add
a shell to the list even if it's not installed. It probably means that
the code handling the /var/ file should probably be callable
by other means than just a dpkg trigger, so that the system
administrator can force update the shell list when they update
add/remove files.

This way you'd entirely remove another case where you'd need to remove
the symlink and as such lose the ability to auto-update the file when
you add/remove shells (that are not otherwise already listed in the .add
and .remove files), and, in fact, make it possible for those systems to
be even more declarative since the administrators wouldn't be messing
with files that are already managed by other tools.

(this is somewhat inspired by /etc/hosts.{allow,deny})

If, and only if, that gets implemented:

* The burden of matching Subject: with subject of email
* The burden of adding the correct BTS-number as email To address

I think we would lose many reviews with a "weekly digest".

I don't think that's a valid assumption. The current copies, since
they're one to an ITP, include the name of the software being
packaged in the subject line. If there's one which mentions software
I'm familiar with, I'm far more likely to read the ITP message and
possibly subscribe to it in the BTS to get further updates. The vast
majority of ITP messages I simply delete unread, having seen only
their subject lines.

If these were aggregated into a digest, fitting the names of all the
relevant software into the subject would be unlikely a lot of the
time. As such, list subscribers are far less likely to spot one for
software they might care about.

Thanks Paul, but I'm having a hard time finding the precise version I would
like to archive on any ftp mirror. My scrape is actually working quite
correctly now, though, since I added a sleep in there -- the source and
machine-installation instructions are tidily tucked away in different
directories, with names, locations, and success/failure logged into a
key-value (more of a dictionary-ish, really) text file. I get that an ftp
request is more civilized, but this scrape is quite convenient for me. If
it is more palatable to the community, I can increase the sleep time in the
loop to a couple of minutes or even a few or more, and throw it on one of
my raspberry pis and forget about it for a while, since I'm not in a major
hurry.

Have a great Monday folks,

How about sending a digest of a potential debian-itp to d-d on a weekly basis?
I think we wouldn't lose any reviews with this, I would even go as far
and claim that there will be more reviews, since it's less of an
"annoyance" and more of a weekly "let's see what people are up to".

Since my initial posting, three participants have raise a voice for
applying the strictness of policy to /etc/shells and allowing
administrators to remove shells.

Thus far, none has motivated any practical need, use case or anecdotal
evidence for actually doing so. I also note that anyone doing so would
likely have reported a bug about shells being added back, but that's not
the case. I conclude that the number of users editing their /etc/shells
must be very small.

At this time, my personal preference would be turning /etc/shells into a
symbolic link to an autogenerated file. Replacing that link with a
manually maintained file would keep the original flexibility at the
slightly increased cost of having to manually update it for added or
removed shells while providing significant improvements for the vast
majority of users.

Would anyone object to this behaviour?

It would fully eliminate the need to fix up those add-shell/remove-shell
calls.

Yeah; I often ignore ITPs too. I did sometimes try to give time to them,
and I might do again in the future. The rest of the time, I think they
make the main purpose of the list harder; and that's the problem I'd
like to fix.

Those are serious problems yes, and the more general project of managing
wnpp needs a lot more love. The majority of those problems get no
regular exposure on -devel though, since they aren't brand new ITPs. You
could make the argument that new ITPs get *too much* attention, relative
to these other aspects of caring for wnpp.

> I do, however, find value in getting notices when people file new

Me too! What I would like is to have better control over choosing when
and how I do this, versus the current situation where it's entangled
with any other use of -devel.

In general I think I would prefer fewer mailing lists than more¹. But
there are many other jobs/tasks/bits of Debian that could do with more
exposure, and don't have the luxury of being auto-copied to -devel, ITP
has a particularly privileged position here.

I do agree with Steve's point though that practically it would likely
result in few people interacting with ITPs than do now, and that would
be unfortunate. It could possibly be ameliorated by a regular
summary/digest email of to -devel. Quite literally nothing more
sophisticated then a digest mail from a debian-itp list on a weekly
frequency to -devel would, IMHO, greatly improve the readability of
-devel. WDYT?

I don't seem to have consensus amongst developers, so I won't persevere
with the idea unless that changes.

¹ that was actually the driving force behind me trying to consume Debian
  lists via NNTP, so I could stop having to subscribe to so many lists;
and also, have easier access to the archives prior to subscribing.

Others have covered the specifics of NNTP here; and at least one person
has re-iterated my point that if many/most people are expected to, or
choose to, filter ITPs, then the "sensible default" would be for them
not to come to the list in the first place, but on the specific
technical point of filtering: it's not simple to reliable filter all ITP
traffic anyway. You can match on the subject, but you will miss any
replies that change it. When I was doing this whatever I ended up with
didn't reach 100% accuracy.

Writing something like this runs the risk of giving the impression that
you are somehow involved in, or authoritative for, the official Debian
mirrors. To avoid any doubt, it would be best in future to state clearly
that you don't, and aren't; in fact it would be best to be clear that
you aren't involved in developing Debian at all (unless that changes).
