Bug#506420: marked as done (incorrect hwcap line in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/libc6-xen.conf?)

In Xen guest kernels, the vDSO tells the dynamic linker to # search in nosegneg subdirectories and to match this extra hwcap bit # in the ld.so.cache file. hwcap 1 nosegneg However I still got thousands of 4gb seg fixup messages and ldd revealed that the runtime linker was not using the Xen-friendly Libc. Changing the 1 to 0, based on a mailing list posting I found, fixed the problem. Unfortunately I've not found where any of this is documented (the ldconfig man page does not contain any useful pointers) so this is slightly guesswork on my part. Perhaps the man page could be improved. This bug is to track the progress of adding support for these devices in etch. Patching in new Smart Array PCI IDs isn't strictly necessary, in general. There is a fallback mode in the cciss driver that recognizes Unknown Smart Array Controllers, and has some until recently sane defaults. The problem is that these defaults are no longer sane for newer hardware. The fallback 'max outstanding commands' setting is too high for the next generation controllers running in Zero Memory Raid mode. This means that the current etch kernels will happily detect and operate these newer controllers, but will be setting a queue depth too large for the controller's fifo. To resolve this, an additional patch is suggested that retrieves the queue depth setting from the card's config instead of hard coding each card's value in a table. 2.6.18 can also use 9cff3b383dad193b0762c27278a16237e10b53dc, adding pci ids for the previously released P700M controller, which is already supported in 2.6.24. -- dann frazier ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: linux-2.6 Source-Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-24 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of linux-2.6, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: linux-2.6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24.diff.gz to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24.diff.gz linux-2.6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24.dsc to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24.dsc linux-doc-2.6.18_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_all.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-doc-2.6.18_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_all.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-all-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-all-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-all_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-all_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-vserver_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-vserver_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6-xen_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-headers-2.6.18-6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-image-2.6.18-6-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.18-6-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-image-2.6.18-6-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.18-6-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-manual-2.6.18_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_all.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-manual-2.6.18_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_all.deb linux-modules-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-modules-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb linux-modules-2.6.18-6-xen-vserver-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-24_amd64.deb to

The problem, potential solutions, and proposed patch are at http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdif f;h=6b4b78fed47e7380dfe9280b154e8b9bfcd4c86c The patch changes the kernel pci sorting order to breadth-first for systems that are known to have their chassis ports(and documentation/remote management) labeled in that order. It does this by matching DMI strings for the systems. Matt Domsch later provided another two patches adding additional systems to the list http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdif f;h=f52383d395178afde66d049e176bb2c59a8c941a;hp=691cd0c2ee2d4d6dff652627fca1 b2d4f1377d58 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdif f;h=f7a9dae7c41580761e7f6de1d508c010b1b44993 Here's a minor related patch http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h= 2b290da053608692ea206507d993b70c39d2cdea These patches were not in the 2.6.18 kernel that shipped with etch, but they are in the newer 2.6 kernels in lenny and sid. For the 17 different system types covered by these patches, people installing etch (or older 2.6 kernels) will have their NICs potentially discovered in a different order than 2.4 kernels in sarge and 2.6 kernels in lenny and sid. There are a few different cases: 1) People fresh installing etch on these systems will be confused that the linux ordering doesn't match the vendor chassis/documentation/remote management labels. 2) People upgrading from 2.4 kernels (like in sarge) to etch will be confused when their NICs are reordered. If possible something should be added to the etch errata about this. 3) People upgrading from etch kernels to newer 2.6 kernels in lenny/sid will be confused when their NICs swap back and now suddenly match the chassis/docs/remote management labels. Something will need to be added to the lenny release notes about this. 4) People upgrading from sarge 2.4 kernels directly to lenny/sid 2.6 kernels won't have a problem. But I'm not sure if that's a supported upgrade path, I think the recommendation is upgrading via etch. On frustrating thing is that the more people X that install broken etch on these systems, the more that A) have to deal with the confusion of having things bacwards and B) will have things changed the other direction when they upgrade to lenny. It is tempting to think about trying to include these patches in a stable kernel update to try and minimize X, but for the people that have already installed broken etch on these system Y, they would be changed with a stable kernel update which is probably even more shocking. Because the systems affected are fairly new, I am guessing that X Y, but I'm not sure if that's enough to justify a stable kernel update. I guess the stable kernel release managers can decide that. I have access to several of the systems on the list and ran into this bug when installing etch on them, the results are sort of interesting: Proliant bl460c: two internal nics, swapped NIC1=eth1 NIC2=eth0 Proliant bl465c: two internal nics, not swapped (routing was such that depth-first and breadth-first produced the same result) NIC1=eth0 NIC2=eth1 Proliant bl480c: four internal nics, pairs swapped NIC1=eth2 NIC2=eth3 NIC3=eth0 NIC4=eth1 I put lspci -tvnn output for the above at http://people.debian.org/~taggart/tmp/pci-ordering/ I have booted newer lenny/sid kernels on the above machines and confirmed that the patches fix the ordering. I'm willing to test other potential fixes if needed. I am filing this bug against a specific version of linux-2.6, but it affects all older 2.6 kernels and all newer 2.6 kernels up to the point the above patches made it into a debian kernel (the first patch was in upstream 2.6.19 at least).

The halt process was so slow that I finally had to power down. Unplugging the external drive has no effect, suggesting that something in the driver is spinning. Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions? If so, can you rule out that the hardware is broken? Afraid not, a few months back during my last move I relocated the drive in question from the shelf to the recycler. It just did not seem worth the effort of moving. Just the dmesg output should be enough. I'm also reassigning this report to the Debian kernel team, but your best bet to get this issue looked into and solved is to contact the upstream developers directly. Note that they may ask you to try with a more recent kernel than 2.6.22. One thing you could try before doing that is to try an installation using a netboot image. The workaround recommended on LKML was to disable CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC (it cannot be disabled in the menu, you have to edit the configuration by hand). Bug#491677: linux-image-2.6.25-2-powerpc: suspend broken with 2.6.25 on an iBook G4

Bug#493228: linux-2.6: Hiccups on amd64 when playing media
On Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 03:11:58PM +0200, Marek Kubica wrote: Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.23 Severity: normal Hi, Since updating the kernel to 2.6.24 I get some strange hiccups when trying to play media files. They play fine for some time (random, but usually after one hour or so) and then they stop. When I start typing or moving the mouse they play on for as long as I provide some input. When I stop, they hang as well. All media players are affected be it MPlayer or Totem. Even GIF animations in Firefox stop moving when this is happening. I thought it might be caused by NO_HZ, but disabling and rebuilding did not help. I am currently building a kernel with NO_HZ and HIGH_RES_TIMERS off (#458312). I have tried various kernels (currently 2.6.25.13) and all seem to have this problem (building with the Debian kernel settings). Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions? Bug#494875: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686-bigmem: hangs after a while

Today I noticed that it produces random hangs. First it crashed while doing a partimage from sda to sda. After that (and after doing an upgrade to 2.6.25-7 - it was 6 before, so it affects both packages) it hung while copying from sda to sdb (a USB hdd). The hang is the same in both cases: console is still active (receives keystrokes) but no command gets through. I can switch consoles, though (Alt-F1, Alt-F2) but obviously none of them work. I can press SysReq, and reboot from there. 2.6.24-7 is stable so far. Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions? Bug#509923: linux-2.6: hd's no longer found on marvell 88SE6145 sata controller
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.26-12 Severity: important As the title says, kernel 2.6.26-12 introduced the problem, that my discs on the marvell sata controller are no longer found. I have already found bug nr. 507432, but opened a new bug, since I suspect, that the patch that fixed the before mentioned bug is the source of my problem. I have also tried kernels 2.6.27-10 and 2.6.28 from kernel.org and they show the same problem. Bug#492581: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686: Does not halt an EeePC 701

When I tell the system to halt it shuts down almost everything (the screen goes off) and then hangs. It leaves one LED on and produces some heat as the only indications that it's not off. Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions? Yes. I don't think I've tested the very latest kernel package (the one that came out a couple of days ago), but the one before that had this happen. It doesn't seem to happen all the time. In the past it had seemed to happen every time (but perhaps I had just got unlucky), now it seems to fail to halt about 70% of the time. -- russ...@coker.com.au http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Main Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#484594: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686: 2.6.25 (and possibly before) very slow to boot around devicemapper/s2disk initialisation stage

I haven't rebooted my amd64 machine yet with the kernel compiled with timing information, but I think it was happening at the same device-mapper/suspend to disk stage. Bug#462229: Problem not present in older kernel.
Rolled back to 2.6.18-4-amd64, and I'm not seeing this problem. Will try to test again with 2.6.18-5-amd64 when I have the opportunity (server is in production).
