Looks like your mdadm.conf is wrong. I suggest you remake that
(check output of /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf) and then update your
initramfs.

If you cannot boot, append break=mount to the kernel line, and at
the initramfs prompt, type

  rm /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

  ctrl-d

and then fix the initramfs.

Bug#527625: [iwl3945] Missing wireless channels 100 to 140 (802.11a 5 GHz)

2009-05-08 Thread Xavier Douville
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.29
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hi
When I load the iwl3945 module, I get this message :

iwl3945: Tunable channels: 11 802.11bg, 13 802.11a channels

According to wikipedia :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

There should be 24 802.11a and 11 802.11bg channels for the US regdom (I
live in Canada).

cat /sys/module/cfg80211/parameters/ieee80211_regdom
US

When I look at the available channels :

sudo iwlist wlan0 channel
wlan0 24 channels in total; available frequencies :
  Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz
  Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz
  Channel 03 : 2.422 GHz
  Channel 04 : 2.427 GHz
  Channel 05 : 2.432 GHz
  Channel 06 : 2.437 GHz
  Channel 07 : 2.442 GHz
  Channel 08 : 2.447 GHz
  Channel 09 : 2.452 GHz
  Channel 10 : 2.457 GHz
  Channel 11 : 2.462 GHz
  Channel 36 : 5.18 GHz
  Channel 40 : 5.2 GHz
  Channel 44 : 5.22 GHz
  Channel 48 : 5.24 GHz
  Channel 52 : 5.26 GHz
  Channel 56 : 5.28 GHz
  Channel 60 : 5.3 GHz
  Channel 64 : 5.32 GHz
  Channel 149 : 5.745 GHz
  Channel 153 : 5.765 GHz
  Channel 157 : 5.785 GHz
  Channel 161 : 5.805 GHz
  Channel 165 : 5.825 GHz
  Current Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1)

I found that channels 100 to 140 are missing from the list. This is half
of the available channels that my card can't tune. Is it normal? Maybe a
bad firmware? I use firmware 15.28.2.8 (debian package version 0.16).

Anyway, here's my proposed patch for unstable (against 2.6.30-rc4) that
deals with the first problem. I'll have a go at handling the new DSP
code as well, but as I don't have the hardware for this driver this will
   need testing by others.

I will test this patch soon; wrt the NEW DSP feature, I don't know if I
can test everything, because I have a Thinkpad T20, only stereo output.

Ok, I can confirm that this patch, with the image created as described
below, works OK on my T20. Tested with latest linus git tree.

BTW, what binary image to use? Is the one extracted with the tool in
this thread, to be run on a little-endian host, ok?

You would need to apply this patch to cs46xx_image.h before running that

Looks like a kernel/driver problem (thus reassigning to

Which wlan resp. ethernet driver do you use? Do you have any relevant messages
 in /var/log/kern.log?

 Michael

firmware-iwlwifi for wlan and I have no clue about eth0.

$ lspci |grep Net

Connection (rev 03)
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN

I looked at kern.log for Errors, Warning, WARNINGS, etc and didn't see
anything. There was a brief discussion debian-user today and another user
had no messages as well.

Looks like your mdadm.conf is wrong. I suggest you remake that
(check output of /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf) and then update your
 initramfs.

Thanks for the reply, Martin.

My mdadm.conf works fine in the 686 kernels, so it is clearly not wrong.

If you cannot boot, append break=mount to the kernel line, and at
 the initramfs prompt, type

  rm /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
  /scripts/local-top/mdadm
  ctrl-d

 and then fix the initramfs.

I'm not interested in deleting mdadm.conf or taking any other steps
that might break the existing functionality.

I'm not reporting this bug because I must have an amd64 kernel- like I
said, the 686 and 686bigmem kernels are working. I initiated this bug
to help get the amd64 version of the kernel (or mdadm?) fixed. I'm
interested in steps that will help fix the packages, not manually work
around its flaws.

Anyhow, I'll look at mdadm.conf when I am able to- but I'm pretty it's
exactly what debian-installer from debian-5.01 gives you when you
tell it you want a non-LVM boot-from-software-RAID setup. I did a
simple two partition (raid and swap) on each drive and a simple
one-partition ext4 inside the RAID.

Best Regards.
Tony

/root/dev/console: no such file Kernel panic

2009-05-08 Thread jidanni
Why upon the first boot of the day do I get
cannot open /root/dev/console: no such file
Kernel panic. not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Then I hit the reset button, and all works fine.
It seems to have started after I upgraded to linux-image-2.6.29-1-686
A web search leads me to believe I should try
DELAY=3 in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf #
http://moto.debian.org.tw/viewtopic.php?p=29346
as perhaps things happen too fast after grub hands things off on that
certain machine.
However it seems that I use initramfs-tools, so I need to know how to do
it with that instead, also note that anything more complex than
dpkg-reconfigure is scary for me. Thanks.
