xserver-xorg-video-ati freeze exception

2008-09-14 Thread Brice Goglin
Hello,

I'd like to get xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4 unblocked.
It fixes the longstanding VT switching bug on M6 chips, and two output
configuration problems.
The other change from lenny3 is just reverted in lenny4 since it broke
more than it helped.

thanks,
Brice

Please unblock foomatic-db and foomatic-filters-ppds

2008-09-14 Thread Josselin Mouette
Hi,

Both foomatic-db and foomatic-filters-ppds contain PPD files that CUPS
refuses to parse since version 1.3.8, leading several hundreds of
printers to fail working. Unstable versions contain fixes for this
issue:

foomatic-db (20080211-2+nmu1) unstable; urgency=low

   * Non-maintainer upload with maintainer's consent.
   * Makefile.in: after installation, fix a common mistake in the .ppd
files that makes cups fail to use them. Closes: #493104.

foomatic-filters-ppds (20080528-1+nmu1) unstable; urgency=low

   * Non-maintainer upload with maintainer's approval.
   * install: after installation, fix a common mistake in the .ppd
files that makes cups fail to use them. Closes: #497015.
   * Recommand cups instead of cupsys.

Thanks,

freeze exception: ttf-aenigma 0.0.20080510.dfsg-1

2008-09-14 Thread martin f krafft
Dear release team:

ttf-aenigma (0.0.20080510.dfsg-1) has spent 12 days in unstable and
I know from myself and those who use it that it just works. It is
a very simple package. It would be really nice if it could be part
of lenny. Would you please let it through?

The package was uploaded before the freeze but had to go through the
NEW queue, and with DebConf etc., that was delayed for a while.
Joerg also spotted a small licence problem, which I fixed
immediately during DebConf and thus reuploaded it.

ttf-aenigma provides 465 truetype fonts, and Philip and myself spent
a good 3-4 months to get the package into shape for Debian,
convincing upstream to let us distribute it in a Free fashion. It
would be a real shame if lenny users couldn't benefit from that.

Thanks,

Should 470629 be RC?

2008-09-14 Thread Greg Kochanski
I'd like to make the case that bug 470629 ought to be fixed in Lenny.

The bug is that a process spends an unreasonable amount
of CPU time searching, waiting for someone to plug in a chip card.
Now, this may not seem important, but I did the math, and it turns out
to be a surprisingly large waste of energy and money.

On my system, a 2.8GHz P4, it uses 3% of my CPU, 24 hours a day.
For me, this is responsible for a (conservatively estimated)
1-watt increase in power consumption.
(On more modern CPUs, this ranges from 0.1W to perhaps 0.5W.
I'll take a conservative assumption that most people are running
modern efficient CPUs and that the impact on the average
user is 0.3 watts.)

Now, when you multiply that increase in power by the number of
Debian users (counting distributions that use Debian), it gets
big. With 10 million users worldwide, we are looking at a total
power consumption -- from this single program -- of several
megawatts. (Enough to power several thousand houses or a
good fraction of a percent of a nuclear power plant.)

At my electricity prices, this amounts to US$11000 per day,
and it could be several times larger if most people are
actually running P4 machines.Over the life-span of lenny,
this would amount to at least US$4 million in wasted electricity
and many tonnes of CO2 generated.

I have buy-in from the maintainer. He says that the bug has
already been fixed upstream and that he is willing to work on
it. (E-mail attached below.)I think this is an unusual bug
in that it has a real and large economic and ecological impact,
even if it doesn't really bother anyone much. Can we make it RC?

-
NOTE:

Power estimates are from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors
and similar pages. Estimates of Debian computer come from
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-540480.html .

 Hi Greg,

you're probably right regarding the huge amount of wasted energy.
...

 Greg Kochanski wrote:
Actually, I think the economic and ecological implications of this bug
raise it from the minor category.

You're welcome to argue about its severity with
debian-release@lists.debian.org but to be honest, I doubt your arguments
will convince them. Nevertheless, if you manage to make this an RC bug I
will do my very best to get a fix into Lenny.

Unfortunately the upstream code in in libchipcard 4.1.3 is broken, i.e.
not hotpluggable. A fix for this issue has been published in libchipcard
4.2.0, so a fix for this bug will probably be uploaded to experimental soon.

 Regards
   Micha

Bug#404951: sb1-bcm91250a kernel does not boot

  Broadcom SiByte BCM1250 B2 @ 800 MHz (SB1 rev 2)
  Board type: SiByte BCM91250A (SWARM)

After that, the system starts CFE again.

This is actually a kernel bug that is reproducible on ball (Debian mips

I am bumping the severity of this bug to critical as:
 - This make this kernel flavour totally useless

Yeah, that's what I've been saying for ages now. If Karsten still has
his SWARM, I'd say he should give it a more active developer who's
interested in working on SWARM support (Aurelien Jarno or Thomas
Bogendoerfer maybe).

But I consider SWARM completely broken. I doubt the kernel works and
debian-installer is probably completely broken too because nobody has
tested it in years. d-i support for the BigSur never worked, although
it's still there. I think d-i support for SWARM and BigSur should be
removed unless something is willing to fix it.
