Also, the command 'set' should have a value for 'prefix' which points to a sensible location for /boot/grub. grub rescue ls (hd0,msdos1)/ config-3.2.0-4-amd64 grub initrd.img-3.2.0-4-amd64 lost+found System.map-3.2.0-4-amd64 vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 What's not clear to me is how it helps me. There's still the question of making the new HD bootable the normal way that remains. Not only is there no TAB completion and command history but you have to handle module loading yourself. 'insmod normal' and 'insmod linux' are needed. Then, if (hd0,msdos2) holds /sbin/init, follow up with grub linux (hd0,msdos1)/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 root=/dev/sda2 grub initrd (hd0,msdos1)/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-amd64 grub boot 'grub-install' and 'update=grub' after booting would be first steps on the road to recovery. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
On the page https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/apds02.html.en there is the statement: A standard installation for the amd64 architecture, including all standard packages and using the default kernel, takes up 822MB of disk space. However following that is a table on the installed size of desktop environments stating: Xfce1529 Installed size in MB How can this be correct? By a standard installation, I believe that page means the installation you'll get if you select the Standard system task at install time, and none of the others. There are various other optional install tasks. You can select them independently of one another; each one will take up its own separate disk space, _on top of_ the space consumed by the Standard system task. One of those tasks is Desktop environment, and it has several sub-branches - with different sizes - depending on which desktop environment you select. Xfce is one of those sub-branches. Most, if not all, of the available install tasks are listed in the table you refer to; it's not limited just to desktop environments. Directly above that table, the page says: Note that you will need to add the sizes listed in the table to the size of the standard installation when determining the size of partitions. So for an Xfce + standard-system installation, you will need 822+1536, or 2356, MB of disk space. (Plus additional for the install process, as is listed in other columns of that table.) -- The Wanderer The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. To be clear I didn't suggest that it be done that way. The reverse, actually. Wondering does not make it a suggestion. I always thought there must be a good reason they didn't do it that way but I didn't know what it was. Which is why I wondered about it. Kushal's reasoning as to why makes a lot of sense to me. [*] Doing that would also solve the problem with renames. As to caching the entire directory that would also create a burden. Directories are multiple blocks long. The kernel would need to guarantee that multiple blocks are read atomically. This caching would be required to happen in the kernel memory space because the program doesn't know about it. It would effectively create a need to lock multiple kernel pages in memory potentially for the duration of the process lifetime. I wouldn't do it that way. I can imagine a local denial of service attack. Just keep opening directories. Although there could be process limits placed upon it in addition to the open file descriptor limit. Some kernels such as Hurd try hard to eliminate limits such as these. Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature

This came from some MTA's when the MUA didn't generate a Message-ID. This lasted at least until 2005. Messages arriving at border mail relays often arrive without a Message-Id header. When the message comes from a local submitter this is normal for mail user agents that don't add it themselves. It isn't good for messages arriving from the outside world and is almost always a spam sign that the message came from spam injection software. The spammer is trying to attack the system. Not having a message id is one of the symptoms. But from valid local submitters it is possibly normal. Unfortunately the Message-Id is an optional header field. One can't say by the RFCs that a message without the Message-Id is invalid and rejected solely upon that basis. The client may not have a good unique name or a good unique clock time and therefore making a globally unique id might be hard for leaf node clients that validly send mail. They leave it to the next mail relay to add. In practice mail from the outside Internet without a Message-Id header is very likely spam. But not always because some mail clients don't create one. Most mail transfer agents such as Postfix and others add a valid Message-Id if one is not present. I use this as a spam sign to add to SpamAssassin scoring. If the message comes in from the outside world and doesn't have a Message-Id then for me on my system's unique environments that is guarenteed to be spam. Can't say that for everyone else though. It depends. This is still the way things are both in 2005 and 2015 and as far as that goes for 1995 too that matter. Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature

You have to start with a brand new, completely empty email if you're starting a topic that is not an intentional derivative of one currently being discussed In terms of numbers of email clients the numbers that don't thread are relatively small. In terms of people who use those clients the numbers are relatively large. HUGE actually. Both Outlook and Gmail sort by subject. They ignore message threading and look only at the subject. Exactly correct! How you would fix it would be to go ahead and start that new email then copy and paste all of your own original here into it. Hope that helps POSSIBLY explain why you received the response you did. If you already knew what happened, my apologies for a-suming you didn't. Re: jessie: how to suppress emacs24 warnings
Well, typing it is cumbersome so you can do in ~/.bash_aliases or ~/.bashrc alias emacs='emacs /dev/null 21' I agree though, that is annoying, and a lot of GTK programs do that. And sending the output to null isn't really the right answer, since you'll miss actual errors that are important. As far as I can tell, it's a compiled flag on gtk, so filing a bug against gtk is probably the best thing to do. You could rebuild the gtk deb from the source deb and change that and install it too, if you want to do that. It’s just stating something some other packager did was deprecated but still functional .. you can start emacs with emacs /dev/null 21 if you like, or not start it from the terminal and start from an icon or menu. Typing emacs /dev/null 21 is too cumbersome and starting from menu looses the directory where I am.

Well, your script is in Perl, so implicitly you consider that CPU cost is negligible. If you manage to optimize everything else (or make the processing more complex) so that it becomes CPU-bound, then you will have to consider reimplementing in C. The CPU time is OK. If I really want an improvement (small delay in real time), I should probably do multithreading. Until then, I believe you are right to trust Perl's IO buffering. In particular, if there is a message without a Message-ID and with \nMessage-ID in the body, I want to detect it. This kind of thing really happens in practice (though this is rare), e.g. due to some buggy mail software that breaks the headers and put a part of them in the body. I also want to check the format of the headers and possible duplicate Message-ID. What my script really does is: IMHO, if you really want to validate the format of the headers, I advise to read the whole header into a string and work from it. Something like: my $header = ; while ($file) { last if $_ eq \n; # or /^\r?\n\z/ if you do not trust line ends $header .= $_; } my @header = split /\n(?!\s)/, $header; I don't understand the point. Accumulating in strings (which involves copies and possible reallocations) and doing a split is much slower than reading lines one by one and treating them separately. while (FILE) Out of curiosity, do you have a particular reason not to use a real variable for your file handles? This is a small loop. The code like that is compact and more readable for me. Personal taste. /^Message-ID:\s+(\S+)( \(added by .*\))?$/i or next; I have never seen this added by in my mails, but assuming it is necessary for you, Yes, obviously. This came from some MTA's when the MUA didn't generate a Message-ID. This lasted at least until 2005. note that it may be written like that: Message-ID: foo@bar (added\n\tby someone)\n I don't think so: AFAIK, these MTA's never wrapped this header. Anyway my regexp is sufficient in my mailbox. Re: Virtualizacion
POSIX says in http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/functions/readdir.html It may well be. But I'm just presenting facts about the filesystems that I assumed you were using when you posted https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2015/04/msg00651.html , not the theory of a POSIX-compliant system. What's important when designing a file system is what should happen, not what actually happens. Yes, but I don't design filesystems. I use them. The context was the design of ext3: Earlier in this thread, Bob Proulx said: (I always wondered why they didn't simply take the *last* entry and move it down to the deleted entry and simply keep the array always compacted. I wonder. But they didn't do it that way.) And Kushal Kumaran replied: Moving entries around breaks ongoing readdir operations. If a readdir has gone past the file being removed, and you moved the last entry there, the entry being moved would be missed, despite *it* not being the entry added or removed. And you replied: I don't think this matters. There's no guarantee that another process isn't writing to that directory while you are working your way along the entries. Perhaps I should have pointed that what Kushal Kumaran said was a POSIX requirement. So, this matters, and I replied: But with the current solution (no automatic moving of an entry), you can't miss an entry that hasn't been removed. Now, what I didn't know and what you showed is that ext3 actually moves the entry for renames. This part is a bug. But what I also meant is that not moving the last entry (i.e. not implementing Bob Proulx's suggesting) is necessary to make sure that this file won't be missed. In short, ext3 is bad for renames, but if Bob Proulx's suggestion were implemented (without a workaround such that caching the whole directory after it is opened[*]), it would be much worse as arbitrary entries would be missed in a readdir sequence. [*] Doing that would also solve the problem with renames. In case of bugs, anything can happen, so that's not interesting at all. Au contraire mon frère, they're very important as you have to live with them and work around them. [...] I agree for an end user, but see the context. Now, IMHO, for renames, perhaps the ext3 behavior is not much a problem (at least if the user is aware of it) because in any case, readdir() may give the old filename and this filename is quite useless in practice (one can't stat or open it, i.e. a second directory parsing is needed in this case). But missing arbitrary entries corresponding to filenames that have been neither removed nor renamed would be much more critical, and I don't think there is a possible safe workaround, e.g. if files are constantly added and removed in the directory (for instance, I do exhaustive tests as I've explained somewhere in this thread, and I use such a directory with results automatically added and removed once taken into account -- no renames here --, but it is quite important that old results are found during a single readdir sequence). -- Vincent Lefèvre vinc...@vinc17.net - Web: https://www.vinc17.net/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: https://www.vinc17.net/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / AriC project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Best way for Red Hat guy to learn Debian?
Oh, also, you may some some habits that you can dispense with, such as looking around the internet for your software instead of your distribution. Debian has everything, pretty much, try the Debian repos first. And don't willy-nilly add repos to Debian without knowing what you're doing ... there are official backports and those are fine, but generally if you really need something newer than stable has, you can add the source repos from unstable, get the source debs and it's dependencies, then re-locate (so they can't disturb anything else and won't trigger removing the current versions) and recompile them. This gets a little unworkable with apps that have huge and non-trivial dependencies (e.g., whole desktop environments, some desktop apps), but generally works. These things can be accomplished in a few commands with a little upfront work. Debian's package source building utilities go far beyond what yum does. ATA resets with Intel 8/C220 and HGST drive
Summary: I had annoying resets of the SATA bus with a 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset controller and a HGST Travelstar 7K1000 drive. I recently managed to stop them and as far as I currently know I am satisfied; I write this mail in the hope that it may be useful for anyone having similar issues. If you do not have that issue and you are not a developer interested in fixing the issue more permanently, you can stop reading right now. Here are the details. The computer is a Zotac ZBox ID91 nettop with a proprietary motherboard, and, as stated above, a Travelstar 7K1000 hard drive (a 7200 RPM 2.5, an unusual beast). It was installed around June 2014, and I noticed the problems some time later, they probably started right away. The distribution was a Debian Jessie (testing) with the packaged kernel, probably linux-image-3.14-1-amd64:amd64 at the time; the issue was not fixed by upgrades. The possibly relevant hardware information are these: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130T CPU @ 2.90GHz CPU: product: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130T CPU @ 2.90GHz description: SATA controller product: 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family 6-port SATA Controller 1 [AHCI mode] vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1f.2 bus info: pci@:00:1f.2 version: 05 width: 32 bits clock: 66MHz capabilities: storage msi pm ahci_1.0 bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=ahci latency=0 resources: irq:42 ioport:f0b0(size=8) ioport:f0a0(size=4) ioport:f090(size=8) ioport:f080(size=4) ioport:f060(size=32) memory:f7d1a000-f7d1a7ff description: ATA Disk product: HGST HTS721010A9 physical id: 0.0.0 bus info: scsi@1:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/sda version: A3J0 serial: [REMOVED] size: 931GiB (1TB) capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos configuration: ansiversion=5 logicalsectorsize=512 sectorsize=4096 signature=d3079a6d The resets happened a few times a day (this computer was is kept on for more than a day and suspend is not used), mostly when the disk was in heavy use, sometimes as early as during the boot; there was a few good days when they did not happen.
