Bug#491024: ITP: MUMPS -- MUltifrontal Massively Parallel sparse direct Solver

2008-07-17 Thread Andreas Tille

On Wed, 16 Jul 2008, Ron Johnson wrote:

Mumps is a computer language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUMPS

And there is a GPLed implementation of this at

   http://sourceforge.net/projects/fis-gtm

which would be really interesting to package for the Debian Med project.
The problem is the bootstrapping procedure (you need a running GT.M to
compile the next version) and we just have no idea how to deal with this.

So keeping in mind to avoid a name space polution would be nice but I
would not like to set a presure on the issuer of the ITP because of
GT.M because it is questionable whether we might ever find a real clue.
So feel free to do what you regard as common sense.

Kind regards

  Andreas.

Bug#491156: [RKI-Spam-Verdacht]ITP: postgresql-8.3-plr -- Procedural language interface between PostgreSQL 8.3 and R

2008-07-17 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Andreas Tille [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: postgresql-8.3-plr
  Version : 8.3.0.6
Upstream Author : Joe Conway [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.joeconway.com/plr/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Procedural language interface between PostgreSQL 8.3 and R
R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics,
providing a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques (linear and
nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification,
 clustering, and so on).
 .
PostgreSQL is an open source SQL database server.
 .
This package provides a procedural language interface to R from
PostgreSQL 8.3. Procedural languages are used to write functions
which can be called in database queries.

This package was removed from Debian (see #228074, which can not be
reopened because it is archived). The reason that it is RC buggy) is
void because #461995 took me 1 Minute to fix (well, you can blame me
for not having this done before the removal - the package was just not
on my focus). The other reason few users is probably right considering
popcon, but this as the only reason to remove a package is not enough.
I think upgradebility from Etch to Lenny is a much higher value.
So I ask for reintroducing this package quickly.

I prepared lintian clean packages of the latest version.

Kind regards

Andreas.

The description is not for the package itself, its just a description for this

Bug#481606: Questions about MiKTeX package manager for Debian

2008-07-17 Thread Manuel Pégourié-Gonnard
Frank Küster scripsit (16.07.2008 16:02)
Of course it's an issue to have only DFSG-free software packaged in
Debian. But how does that affect a package manager? Well, it would be
really cool if the package manager was able to display the license of
package I am about to download. But it doesn't affect its freeness
which license data it downloads have.

Mpm does not display the license of things you are about to install. But
AFAIK, MikTeX claims that to the best of their knowledge, they only package
free stuff. As you know well, to the best of their knowloedge is an
important restriction there (I think the situation in MikTeX, upstream TeX
Live and Debian is rather similar wrt to lack of comprehensive and reliable
licence info). They also claim that for them, free means both FSF-free and
DFSG-free (see http://miktex.org/Copying.aspx).

But I agree with you that anyway the licence of the package manager itself and
of the packages it downloads are different issues, it was just for information.

By the way, how do you feel about such a LaTeX package manager for
Debian? Do you think it might be useful? Or does TeXlive include a
manager which does the same thing? I read somewhere that TeXlive is
 also (partly) based on MiKTeX.

Answering backwards, last question first: No, I don't think TeXliv is
based on MikTeX. It's based on teTeX, and teTeX and MikTeX may have some
common roots - although I think that rather has MikTeX taken over some
ideas from teTeX, and then developped much further.

Indeed. Of course there are some common roots: Knuth, the CTAN :-) But things
in MikTeX are quite different. Eg, MikTeX is not based on web2c/kpathsea, does
have similar but different tools and architecture for updmap, fmtutil, etc.
TeX Live is far closer to teTeX than MikTeX is.

I do think that a package manager for updating individual packages and
for installing add-on packages (new on CTAN, non-free, or not on CTAN at
all) would be a nice thing to have.

I think so, and I have used a home-compiled mpm for long. But it only install
packages in MikTeX obviously, and I think most of them come from CTAN and all
of them are free (in theory).

As far as I know, TeXLive upstream
maintainers already work on such a feature (maybe even with MikTeX-like
automatic package installation), but I'm not sure about it's status. I'd
be surprised if it would be already in the soon-to-be-released 2008
 version.

So... surprise! It is in the future TL'08! It's even the main new feature in
this release (with net install) imo. It's quite mpm-like (for the package
management part) and also has a Perl/Tk GUI frontend. It doens't provide an
install-on-the-fly feature though.

I asked Norbert in BachoTeX what he wanted to do with it in Debian and he said
he thought tlmgr should be configured to install updates in TEXMFLOCAL, iirc.
Anyway, you'll probably discuss this with him when he comes back from the
mountains...

I honestly have no idea how tlmgr and mpm can play well together, and whether
mpm has interesting features that tlmgr doesn't.

In particular, I don't think you should call the binary package
miktex-tools. I'm not used to all of them, but it seems that what you
mainly want to make available for Debian is mpm? I guess we do not want
 initexmf in Debian.

I'm not sure initexmf isn't needed but other tools. By the way, maybe mthelp
would be cool to have: it doesn't work exactly as texdoc, and if I personally
prefer the texdoc way, other people may prefer mthelp or want to use both.

Best,
Manuel.

Bug#491220: ITP: unicap -- library to access different kinds of video capture devices

2008-07-17 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Jonas Smedegaard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: unicap
  Version : 0.2.24
Upstream Author : Arne Caspari [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://unicap-imaging.org/
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: C
Description : library to access different kinds of video capture devices

Unicap provides a uniform interface to video capture devices. It allows
applications to use any supported video capture device via a single API.

Building applications with a graphical user interface is made especially
easy with the unicapGTK widget set.

The ucil library provides easy to use functions to render text and
graphic overlays onto video images.

Unicap offers a high level of hardware abstraction while maintaining
maximum performance. Zero copy capture of video buffers is possible for
devices supporting it allowing fast video capture with low CPU usage
even on low-speed architectures.

Hi,

As Daniel already answered, some of them are ready to upload.
Concerning guymager, I have to do some work on them (the first one is to
upload in our git repository).
Right now, I'm on vacation and I have a little problem to find time to
work on the packaging.

If you want to help us, you can subscribe to the Debian Forensics
project (http://alioth.debian.org/projects/forensics).
You will have access to the git repos and help us in packaging if you
want.

I will try to upload guymager this weekend.

development has stopped (last upload in 2005), and the uthor has moved
to nxml-mode, which is standard in modern emacsen, and which
supersedes this package.

Unless there is trong demand, I suggest the QA group as for its
removal.

The package description is:
PSGML is a major mode for the editor Emacs used for editing SGML
documents. It contains a simple SGML parser and can work with any
DTD. (The most popular nowadays are the HTML DTDs. This package
turns your emacs into the one of most powerful HTML editors and will
be ultimately flexible as well, since you could upgrade your editor
by just installing new DTDs). Functions provided includes menus and
commands for inserting tags with only the contextually valid tags,
identification of structural errors, editing of attribute values in a
separate window with information about types and defaults, and
 structure based editing.
 .
Since psgml parses the DTD to allow you to edit SGML documents, you do
need to have the DTDs installed in order to use psgml. Since psgml
installs itself as an HTML mode in Emacs, it depends on sgml-data. Some
other packages which also provide SGML DTDs are suggested, like
 debiandoc-sgml and linuxdoc-sgml.
 .
SGML, a language for encoding the structure of a document, is an ISO
standard: ISO 8879:1986 Information processing - Text and office
systems - Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).
 .
Psgml is a standard package for XEmacs, and thus this package does not
 install itself for XEmacsen.

Bug#491262: ITP: nose-scenario -- test scenario adaptation plugin for nose

2008-07-17 Thread Ben Finney
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ben Finney [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: nose-scenario
  Version : 0.1
Upstream Author : Ben Finney [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://pypi.python.org/pypi/nose_scenario/
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : test scenario adaptation plugin for nose

The 'scenario' plugin for 'nose' enables any test case to be
transformed into multiple copies of that test, by applying data-based
 test scenarios.
 .
The plugin will detect scenarios associated with one or more test
cases It then generates a number of adapted copies of each test case,
one for each scenario, with the scenario data exposed to the test
case via attributes. Each adapted test case will then be run
separately by 'nose', and will be identified distinctly by the
 scenario used.
 .
'nose' is a testing framework for Python code.
