Bug#620897: ITP: sshuttle -- Transparent proxy server that works as a poor man's VPN
]] Miguel Landaeta | sshuttle is not exactly a VPN, and not exactly port forwarding. | It's kind of both, and kind of neither. | . | Any TCP session you initiate to one of the proxied IP addresses will | be captured by sshuttle and sent over an ssh session to the remote | copy of sshuttle, which will then regenerate the connection on that | end, and funnel the data back and forth through ssh. | . | It's like a VPN, since it can forward every port on an entire network, | not just ports you specify. Conveniently, it lets you use the real | IP addresses of each host rather than faking port numbers on localhost. This sounds a lot like what a SOCKS proxy does? What does this provide over using ssh -D and tsocks? Bug#617854: Packaging puddletag for Debian
Hope you guys don't mind. I've mixed the emails up a bit. - can you ship the documentation along with the source tarball? I'll be doing this from the next major release onwards. I'm currently in the process of converting the documentation to use Sphinx for this exact reason. If you are not familiar with the creation of a manpage, we can surely point you to some very easy to use documentation/light markup systems that are almost as easy to use as pure plain text. Please do. - I saw you're providing a deb pkg: are you interested in maintain puddletag in Debian with Rogério and me? If you saw the code I use to create the deb, I'm sure you'd be wtf'ng way into next week. ;) What would maintaining the package with you entail? I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes at distro, so please consider me an idiot when you explain. - in the 'copyright' you mix GPL-2 with references to GPL-3 (Debian file and gnu.org url) and in the README file you state it's GPL-2: it's better if you clarify it (I can understand it's GPL-2, but explicit is better than implicit :). GPL-3. Blame my lack of an eye for detail for missing that. ;) As soon as you can clarify this, you can grab our distilled copyright file and use that for your future tarballs. Where would I be able to find this? - you mention that puddletag uses code from Picard and CDDB-py, and icons from Oxygen project: can you be a bit more specific what files uses those pieces of source code and the image? Images are available via svn. They're 'compiled' in the source tarball...Now that I think about it, I should probably include them. I've renamed them though. Do you guys want them listed against what they originally were? puddlestuff/tagsources/CDDB.py is taken from CDDB.py (the project) puddlestuff/audioinfo/compatid.py is taken from Picard puddlestuff/audioinfo/wma.py is a derivative work from Picard's wma.py module. The image handling code in puddlestuff/audioinfo/vorbis.py is kind of from Picard (looked at the code to get an idea of how to do it). - the package misses a manpage; puddletag seems to have some command-line options, well hidden into the code not even a -h/--help switch would show them :) I can probably give a look to it, but if you want to do it I'll do it. Each option has one or two caveats that I have to sort out, before I can make them public. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#620897: ITP: sshuttle -- Transparent proxy server that works as a poor man's VPN
On Tue, Apr 05, 2011 at 08:40:49AM +0200, Tollef Fog Heen wrote: This sounds a lot like what a SOCKS proxy does? What does this provide over using ssh -D and tsocks? Yes, it sounds a lot like a SOCKS proxy. However, what sshuttle does is listen on a port, creates an iptables chain and redirect all outgoing TCP/IP and DNS traffic to this port securely through a SSH session. So, it is more featureful than -D flag of ssh. It is a very useful tool for untrusted LANs since you can tunnel almost all your traffic to a trusted host and not just web traffic through the SOCKS feature. Please take a look at https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle. sshuttle is already in Debian as I found out after I filed this ITP. -- Miguel Landaeta, miguel at miguel.cc secure email with PGP 0x7D8967E9 available at http://keyserver.pgp.com/ Faith means not wanting to know what is true. -- Nietzsche -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#620821: upstream in NM
Hi, I think it would be great if the functionality of vpnautoconnect was integrated into NM upstream, probably Barraud's experience on vpnautoconnect would help quite a bit. However, until that is available in NM, the functionality that vpnautoconnect provides is very useful, especially in absense of anything else that provides this. I would be happy to review and sponsor this package, and when the author has determined it has become obsolete, then we can remove it. Until then, it seems useful to include. micah -- pgpmQtRHvioGL.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#620821: ITP: vpnautoconnect -- Automatically reconnect VPNs, created by NetworkManager
For me, and many others, vpnautoconnect is the only way we have been able to use a VPN with NetworkManager. Apparently, KVpnc works fine, but I have not tried it. Vpnautoconnect solves for me two very longstanding bugs in NetworkManager that don't appear to have any progress. I don't know why these bugs have languished for so long, but until there is some movement on them I think the best bet in the near future is vpnautoconnect. I have tried other methods, but vpnautoconnect is far more reliable. Ideally, yes, NetworkManager would work. According to some comments in the bugs listed below, the solution is not particularly simple. I don't know if this is true, or why it this problem is taking so long to fix, but reconnecting dropped VPN connections is really an essential requirement. problem 1: NetworkManager ignores 'connect automatically' The 'connect automatically' option in NM has no effect. This bug is nearly five years old (!). https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349151 https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager/+bug/280571 Someone wrote a python script to drop in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ in order to reconnect: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=158670 But it is a bit hackish and requires editing to set UID and VPN name configuration. problem 2: OpenVPN and soft-restarts - openvpn soft-restarts frequently, but NM drops the connection. This bug is 2.5 years old. from https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556134 Since n-m-openvpn calls OpenVPN with the --up-restart parameter, OpenVPN calls back the nm-openvpn-service-openvpn-helper when it is restarted. In that case, nm-openvpn-service-openvpn-helper fails with exit code 1, resulting in bringing down the VPN connection. The reason for this is that OpenVPN doesn't set the same environment variables when calling the --up script at init and at restart. In particular, it doesn't set ifconfig_remote, route_gateway_1, ifconfig_local, route_network_1, route_net_gateway, route_vpn_gateway and route_netmask_1. additional related bug reports: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-openvpn/+bug/280160 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/330056 There is this script floating around: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1316314 This works similar to the other script above. I have not looked closely to compare the differences. It also is in python, requires custom editing, is a bit hackish, and gets dropped in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ a -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. On Tue, Apr 5, 2011 at 07:46, Ruben spame...@hotmail.com wrote: Package: general Severity: wishlist Hello. I would like to see Frandom in the Debian repositories. Frandom is a kernel module for pseudo-random data generation, much as random and urandom, but works incredibly fast. It is currently unmantained. However, is still usefull. You can have a look in http://www.billauer.co.il/frandom.html for more information. All this module seems to do is grab some data from /dev/urandom and use it as a key for an RC4 generator. While it's a nice project to learn about kernel APIs, why should this be in the kernel, widening the kernel attack surface and thus giving the security team more work, when it can be in a userspace application or library just as easily? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. The correct procedure for such requests is a “Request For Package” (RFP), assigned against the ‘wnpp’ pseudo-package. The next step is to interest someone (maybe you?) to become the maintainer for that package in Debian, and to do the work of getting it packaged and accepted. I have changed this report accordingly. Thank you for your interest in improving Debian. Please don't encourage this kind of crap!
