Bug#464353: xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver is very unstable using the 2.2.x version of the driver

2008-02-06 Thread Florian Reitmeir
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

the X server only runs for a couple of secounds, then it crashes and is
not able to start again. it doesn't matter if i reboot or suspend the machine.
Downgrading to 2:2.1.0 helps.

I tried the version of experimental, with no success.
Is there anything i can do, to help to debug the issue?
Otherwise it would be really nice to have the old version available in
unstable.

Greetings

Then please check if the issue is fixed in the latest upstream version.

2:2.2.0.90-2 will be in unstable shortly (2.2.0.90-1 is a fake new
upstream).

  Hi,

I have experienced some random crash of my laptop and it seems caused
by the intel driver. When I switch to vesa driver, I don't have the
  crashes anymore.

I can reproduce it quickly by running glxgears. glxgears runs some
seconds with visual glitches, then locks with:
  intelWaitIrq: drmI830IrqWait: -16

After glxgears crash, the complete desktop contains glitches and
  finally the laptop crashes too.

I'm up for suggestions to determine if it's really the intel driver
  that causes this crash.

  cheers,

  Fathi

Bug#463633: After coming from DPMS I get a black screen with working mouse pointer

The server works ok, but if I let it go into DPMS mode, when coming back I
get a black screen, only the mouse pointer is shown then, I can move it and
it is perfectly drawn, but the whole screen remains black. I can get the
screen back to normal by going to a text VT and coming back to the X VT.

The machine needs Option VBERestore true to get the screen restored
after getting back from a text VT, this has been like that since the XFree 4
era and I believe that this option is the one that is allowing me to restore
the screen when it becomes black.

This was not happening before with the xserver-xorg-video-i810 driver, only
  happens with the new xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Can you try a recent snapshot of the upstream git repository? I think
some changes related to this problem have been committed since 2.2.0 was
 released. There's a howto at http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html

Ping?

Please try with 2:2.2.0.90-2 which has been uploaded today.

By default, on my laptop, the kernel BACKLIGHT_CONTROL is used, and
that doesn't quite help xbacklight to work. I don't know what X uses in
such a case, but it appears that tweaking
/sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness doesn't work (the laptop is a vaio)
either, so it might just be a problem with the kernel driver.

Anyways, switching to the native BACKLIGHT_CONTROL makes xbacklight
 work.

Mike,

Can you try 2:2.2.0.90-2 which entered unstable today? If it doesn't
help, we need to forward this bug upstream at
http://bugzilla.freedesktop.org (product xorg, component Driver/Intel).
I'll do it if you can't.

thanks,

As long as one can override it with a *list* (which must include the empty

 hardcoded default.

Thanks a lot for discussing this, guys.

Unfortunately, since Marcus still had problems with 2.6.24-rc4 and a

this could work?

Is anybody actually implementing something to handle the above list

As long as one can override it with a *list* (which must include the
empty list to disable the feature) in xorg.conf, there is not a problem
  to have a hardcoded default.

Thanks a lot for discussing this, guys.

Unfortunately, since Marcus still had problems with 2.6.24-rc4 and a
recent snapshot of thinkpad-acpi, what do we have to wait for before
 this could work?

Is anybody actually implementing something to handle the above list
 of backlight devices?

Sounds like Marcus' config will use the ACPI /sys/class/backlight interface by
default. I think this is a good thing, since it's the preferred method on
thinkpads. However, existing ACPI video drivers don't provide a nice,
sequential set of backlight values, so it's easy to get stuck at a given
backlight level if you just try to use the up/down controls. See the lkml
discussion with the subject [PATCH] Rationalise ACPI backlight
implementation for details on that, it may be that the patch in that thread
will work for Marcus.

Bug#458858: old xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-4 doesn't help either

2008-02-06 Thread Ondrej Certik
But it also hangs, as it used to hang, when this driver was the newest
one in sid: black screen, with the mouse pointer on and off
periodically. This used to do, then I upgraded to newer intel,
with the problems reported in this thread.

Same with 2:2.2.0.90-2 which entered unstable today?

This does not look good to me... IRQ problems can be bad... Let's hope
it is only related to the jmicron driver. Can you try without it?

Unfortunately, this is a production computer (I am not even sitting at
it) that I need to work very reliably, so I just installed the vesa
driver and we didn't experience a single hang since then. I don't want
to mess up with it, as this is just a pain for people working with it,
when it freezes.

We solved the problem by not using the intel driver and as to me, I am
ok with this solution.

I know it's not very helpful to find the real bug. But I am always
testing the latest intel driver on my other computer, where I am not
afraid of freezing, as I can easily fix it, and I am experiencing
those font problems as I always report.

Ondrej

updated X drivers in etch+1/2?

2008-02-06 Thread Julien Cristau
Hi,

at debconf last year, we discussed the possibility to include some X
drivers in etch+1/2 to support newer hardware. IMO it'd be nice to
update the nv and intel drivers, but there's probably some work needed
to backport that to xserver 1.1. Would anybody on debian-x have the
interest/time to try this? If someone is interested I can help, but it
doesn't look like I'll have time to do it on my own.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#464470: Disabling, and then re-enabling, DPMS does not work.

2008-02-06 Thread Brandon
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12lenny2

DPMS works as expected at first, but after disabling and then
re-enabling it, the display will not turn off again. You can trigger
this with an app like MPlayer that disables DPMS on startup and
re-enables it at exit, or simply with xset.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Run xset dpms 5 5 5. Display turns off after 5 seconds without
input, as expected
2) Run xset -dpms. Display now stays on, as expected.
3) Run xset +dpms. Display continues to stay on, even after 5 seconds
without input.

To confirm, the relevant xset q output after running xset +dpms is:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 5 Suspend: 5 Off: 5
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

The only way to get DPMS working again is to re-run the xset dpms 5 5
5 command, or to re-start your xserver.

I am using the nvidia drivers from stable. According to this bug report
for Ubuntu:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/78783
this bug is also present when using the nv drivers.

Bug#452739: Detailed crash log file

2008-02-06 Thread Moshe Gorohovsky
Hi Brice,

I have installed 2:2.2.0.90-2 driver and X server continues to crash.
I have started icedove, was inactive for few minutes, screensaver
attempted to start and X server crashed.
I have attached a log file that corresponds to the crash.
There are same error lines in the log file:
  Error in I830WaitLpRing()
  space: 130732 wanted 131064

- Moshe.

  Hi Brice,

My X.Org just crashed. Previousely I have disabled gdm.
X VT was blank. Text VTs were left blank. I had to reboot.
  X.org.0.log contains following error messages:

  ...
  Fatal server error:
  lockup
  ...
  Error in I830WaitLpRing()

 Still experiencing this lockup?
Does 2:2.2.0.90-2 help? It just entered unstable.

It also occurs with the (old non-RandR 1.2) ATI driver, as reported in
#397197. I am merging these bugs. I think I may have seen a relevant
commit recently that could fix this, but I can't find it.
