[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing
For myself it appears that suspend works but hibernate gives the authentication failed message as Matthew East notes. I agree with Jos Dehaes that any exposed feature ought to work. I'm not sure I'd call it a blocker but I do think this is a major bug. The devs are welcome to disagree with me of course. My use case is that I'd like to use hibernate so that it doesn't take so long to boot but if my wife is the next one to use the laptop after me she ought to be presented with a login screen like she's used to. I'd say that the switch user functionality would be fine but my laptop doesn't have enough ram to make that really practical. In any case if it can't be fixed it should be disabled before dapper releases. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal = Major -- Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing https://launchpad.net/bugs/3642 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 45518] Re: No easy way to listen to classical music
Sebastien, I use totem-gstreamer 0.10 (dapper). Yes, Rythmbox has the same issue. You can try for yourself: create a playlist with two consecutive tracks of an opera (as wav files). You will hear the gap. I am no genius, but rythmbox is _obviously_ loading the second file in memory after the first one is finished: you can even hear the hard disk noise as the track changes. :-) Note: totem currently (in dapper) has a serious issue which prevented me from testing it again. Essentially, it stops playing wav files after 2 seconds. I can't hear anything at all after 2 seconds. Maybe I'll file another bug about that. -- No easy way to listen to classical music https://launchpad.net/bugs/45518 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake
Thanks, Franz. The strace output is indeed helpful (although it is a bit frustrating that the output doesn't appear to be complete - probably stderr hadn't finished flushing before the process died). It looks as though pilot-xfer dies in pilot-link's unixserial.c code, in the function s_open, between lines 199 and 206. My best guess at the moment is that some recent kernel-related change is the root cause. I'm not familiar with Ubuntu, but is it possible to downgrade your kernel package a few revisions and see if the problem disappears? [Bug 45577] gnome-sound-properties: No easy way to control volume of system sounds
Public bug reported: There is no easy way to control the volume of system-event- sound relativ to other sounds. This is annoying, as system-sounds-are mostly much louder than sound from other applications like media-players, unless you turned all their volumes to 100%, but even in this case, system-sounds are nearly always markable louder. (And having all applications volume set to 100% is a loose of function, you can't control the volume of a single application then) So I propose to include a volume control in gnome-sound-properties for the sound-events. [Bug 45518] Gapless playback between tracks
If the sound stream isn't continuous you will risk you hearing the join because you can have a soundcard buffer underrun. The only way to achieve true gapless playback is by preloading parts of the next track while you are finishing off the previous track (so as far as the soundcard is concerned there is only one long stream of music rather the end of a stream followed by the start of a new stream). Even extremely small and fast programs suffer this. If you download the soon to be attached 3sine.wav and try doing aplay 3sine.wav 3sine.wav you will probably hear a slight blip as the first stops and the second starts. If you were to join the two together in audacity there would be no blip. Likewise if you play them in something that does buffering of the next clip directly after the first stops there would be no gap (XMMS with the esd output plugin is an example of this). Now as it happens we can't do this test in totem because it is currently throwing gstreamer errors on the wavs but I'm going to guess that if we could test it the gap would be more audible than with aplay. However even if it were as good as aplay (which I'm guessing is as good as you can get) then would still hear the gap and thus I think this is really a feature request for gapless playback. ** Attachment added: 3 second sine tone .wav http://librarian.launchpad.net/2758951/3sine.wav -- No easy way to listen to classical music https://launchpad.net/bugs/45518 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 42959] Samsung YP-Z5 flash based MP3 player fails to mount
Public bug reported: Upon connection of my mp3 player ubuntu produces an icon in PlacesComputer corresponding to the player. Clicking this icon causes nothing to happen. Attempts to mount using pmount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 also fails despite /dev/sda1 existing. -- Output of id: uid=1000(peter) gid=1000(peter) groups=4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),100(users),104(lpadmin),105(scanner),106(admin),1000(peter) Output of id hal: uid=113(hal) gid=113(hal) Groups=113(hal),24(cdrom),25(floppy),46(plugdev) Output of uname -a: Linux Igor 2.6.12-10-386 #1 Fri Apr 28 13:13:44 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux ** Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed -- Samsung YP-Z5 flash based MP3 player fails to mount https://launchpad.net/bugs/42959 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Luke Schierer wrote: I cannot duplicate this with 2b3, what gtk theme are you using? does it go away if you change the theme? are you doing anything funky like playing with xorg's composite stuff? i'm using the human theme on both machines (ubuntu default). I switched to clearlooks (plain switch, not log in/out), and it still happens. there was almost nothing visible cpu useage wise at 7 irc tabs, but at 9 it was quite clear. [Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections
After having read through this bug's comments, here are my two cents. 1) The lock screen item should not be treated differently than suspend/hibernate. They are all options that are a) potentially timer-controlled and automatic and b) have no bearing on the current gnome session other than to pause it. 2) Why not, rather than using a dialog, just incorporate a submenu into the System menu to handle the different shutdown/logout options? It would be simpler and easier to navigate. Plus it would be consistent with preferences and administration menus that do not use dialogs. (See proposal below) 3) Separating the dialog (or menus) into Pause Session (or some other intuitive name) and End Session (or Shut Down etc) would be great. I have no idea why things like sleep and shutdown are in the same dialog as their functionality is of a very different nature. Here is my proposal for a menu-based version of the dialog: System **Session (User) Lock Screen Switch User Log Out **Pause (Power Saving) Sleep Hibernate **Quit (Shut Down) Reboot Power Off Note: Lock Screen could also go in the Pause submenu, however, locking the screen is sort of a semi-logout which requires a password so I placed it in Session/User. -- logout dialog UI objections https://launchpad.net/bugs/33002 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 45611] window selection problems
Public bug reported: I have Dapper with latest updates on dual opteron and 2.6.15-23-amd64-generic kernel. The option in the system/preferences/windows for selecting windows when mouse moves over them doesn't seem to work. Also, when this preference is not enabled (i.e. when I assume I'm using click-to-raise) clicking in a window sometimes has no effect. Usually in this situation it takes a click on the title bar after having clicked elsewhere to bring the window to the top. ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed -- window selection problems https://launchpad.net/bugs/45611 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
