[Bug 45531] poweroff event is executed immediately

2006-05-19 Thread Markus Wigge
Public bug reported:

A few days ago all went well, I pushed my power-button and got to the
logout-screen, but since the latest updates when I push the power-button
I can see the logout-screen for only a few seconds and the system starts

A bug or a feature?

Maybe a bug because my gnome-session does not seem to be saved that way.

[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-05-19 Thread Andrew Jorgensen
For myself it appears that suspend works but hibernate gives the
authentication failed message as Matthew East notes. I agree with Jos
Dehaes that any exposed feature ought to work. I'm not sure I'd call it
a blocker but I do think this is a major bug. The devs are welcome to
disagree with me of course.

My use case is that I'd like to use hibernate so that it doesn't take so
long to boot but if my wife is the next one to use the laptop after me
she ought to be presented with a login screen like she's used to. I'd
say that the switch user functionality would be fine but my laptop
doesn't have enough ram to make that really practical.

In any case if it can't be fixed it should be disabled before dapper
releases.

[Bug 35669] Re: neither /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc setup in package configuration

2006-05-19 Thread Stephan Michels
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 31699 ***

I had similar problems. My problem was that gnome-sound-properties
didn't start esd. I got following output:

ALSA lib confmisc.c:1107:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition
'defaults.pcm.card'
ALSA lib conf.c:3493:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned

ALSA lib conf.c:3951:(snd_config_expand) Args evaluate error: No such file or
directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2102:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default

That problem went away after I added to my .asoundrc.asoundconf:
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.pcm.subdevice -1
pcm.device 1

Now I have:
!defaults.pcm.card SoundSticks
defaults.ctl.card SoundSticks
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.pcm.subdevice -1
pcm.device 1

FYI, I have a mac mini with USB Harman Kardon Soundsticks.

[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-05-19 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
There are two ways of doing suspend to ram (seemingly). One way
(standby) is fairly common but doesn't save much power. The other way
(ram) is not so common but saves more power. By default dapper defaults
to ram.

See line 8 of /etc/default/acpi-support for further details.

[Bug 36321] Re: Incomplete logout options with XGL

2006-05-19 Thread Bazon
This happens to me, too, and I'd like to add how XGL is started exactly to make
it better reproduceable:
A new xsession is created:
/usr/share/xsessions/xgl.desktop

containing:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=XGl
Exec=/usr/bin/startxgl.sh
Icon=
Type=Application

where /usr/bin/startxgl.sh is the script which actually starts xgl and
looks in a minimal case (not starting compiz withit) like this:

#!/bin/bash

Xgl -fullscreen :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo sleep 2
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-session

This is a popular method to start XGL, as it leaves you the option to
start a normal Xorg Session from GDM.

It is reported e.g.:

[Bug 45518] Re: No easy way to listen to classical music

2006-05-19 Thread seguso
Sebastien, I use totem-gstreamer 0.10 (dapper).

Yes, Rythmbox has the same issue. You can try for yourself: create a
playlist with two consecutive tracks of an opera (as wav files). You
will hear the gap. I am no genius, but rythmbox is _obviously_ loading
the second file in memory after the first one is finished: you can even
hear the hard disk noise as the track changes. :-)

Note: totem currently (in dapper) has a serious issue which prevented me
from testing it again. Essentially, it stops playing wav files after 2
seconds. I can't hear anything at all after 2 seconds. Maybe I'll file
another bug about that.

[Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake

2006-05-19 Thread Matt Davey
Thanks, Franz.
The strace output is indeed helpful (although it is a bit frustrating that the
output doesn't appear to be complete - probably stderr hadn't finished
flushing before the process died).

It looks as though pilot-xfer dies in pilot-link's unixserial.c code, in the
function
s_open, between lines 199 and 206. My best guess at the moment is that
some recent kernel-related change is the root cause.

I'm not familiar with Ubuntu, but is it possible to downgrade your kernel
package a few revisions and see if the problem disappears? I've also
sent a message to the pilot-link guys to see if it's ringing any bells there.

current state of syncing for me.

The original bug - inconsistent syncing - appears to have been resolved:
I can sync consistently now. However, I still have the following
problems.

1) Progress indicators are meaningless: I get the whipping back and
forth per conduit;

2) No logging: No information at all in the gnome-pilot logs. According
to the log information on the Palm itself, all is well.

Would you like me to open new reports specifically about those?

Sorry for the information overload, I was trying to provide as much
information as possible to help developers locate the bug(s), since the
original problem was inconsistent

[Bug 45577] gnome-sound-properties: No easy way to control volume of system sounds

2006-05-19 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

There is no easy way to control the volume of system-event- sound
relativ to other sounds.

This is annoying, as system-sounds-are mostly much louder than sound from other
applications like media-players, unless you turned all their volumes to 100%,
but even in this case, system-sounds are nearly always markable louder.
(And having all applications volume set to 100% is a loose of function, you
can't control the volume of a single application then)

So I propose to include a volume control in gnome-sound-properties for
the sound-events.

In the simplest case one for all, or even better one control for each
event.

[Bug 45518] Gapless playback between tracks

2006-05-19 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
If the sound stream isn't continuous you will risk you hearing the join
because you can have a soundcard buffer underrun. The only way to
achieve true gapless playback is by preloading parts of the next track
while you are finishing off the previous track (so as far as the
soundcard is concerned there is only one long stream of music rather the
end of a stream followed by the start of a new stream).

Even extremely small and fast programs suffer this. If you download the soon to
be attached 3sine.wav and try doing
aplay 3sine.wav 3sine.wav
you will probably hear a slight blip as the first stops and the second starts.
If you were to join the two together in audacity there would be no blip.
Likewise if you play them in something that does buffering of the next clip
directly after the first stops there would be no gap (XMMS with the esd output
plugin is an example of this).

Now as it happens we can't do this test in totem because it is currently
throwing gstreamer errors on the wavs but I'm going to guess that if we
could test it the gap would be more audible than with aplay.

However even if it were as good as aplay (which I'm guessing is as good
as you can get) then would still hear the gap and thus I think this is
really a feature request for gapless playback.

[Bug 38730] Re: gnome-default-applications-properties uses incorrect thunderbird command

2006-05-19 Thread Adam Conrad
I suspect, after seeing bug #32532, that the correct default for this
should just be mozilla-thunderbird %s, since thunderbird will
correctly do the compose thing if %s is mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], while if
%s is empty (as it would be in the press a hotkey to open my mail
app case), it will just load the main folder view.

Doing it with -compose %s means that that user will hit his email
button and get an empty compose window instead of the folder view. I'm
not positive, but I don't think that's the expected behaviour from an
email button on a keyboard.

[Bug 45417] Re: Big problem in the print dialog

2006-05-19 Thread Guillaume Desmottes
I looked deeper in the code to try to understand this bug.

The paper size menu is filled in gpa-option-menu.c :
gpa_option_menu_rebuild_menu () using libgnomeprint's configuration
tree.

The first time this function is called there is no problem. But this function
is also called when the modified' signal is catched
(gpa_option_menu_config_modified_cb).
The signal is emited in libgnomeprint, gpa-config.c:gpa_config_printer_modified
().

During the two calls of gpa_option_menu_connect (), it seems the
configuration tree is modified. There is a good chance that's a
libgnomeprint bug so.

Hi Sebastian-

I don't appear to have Xine installed, but I get the same artifacts with
Kaffeine and Kaboodle. Strangely, Mplayer doesn't give the same
problems - the sound is out of sync.

i'm using the human theme on both machines (ubuntu default). Its
followed me through 2 installs on one machine. I dont have anything
(like xgl/dual head) going on the computer i use for chat currently.
I switched to clearlooks (plain switch, not log in/out), and it still
happens. there was almost nothing visible cpu useage wise at 7 irc tabs,
but at 9 it was quite clear.

[Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections

2006-05-19 Thread blaksaga
After having read through this bug's comments, here are my two cents.

1) The lock screen item should not be treated differently than
suspend/hibernate. They are all options that are a) potentially
timer-controlled and automatic and b) have no bearing on the current gnome
session other than to pause it.
2) Why not, rather than using a dialog, just incorporate a submenu into the
System menu to handle the different shutdown/logout options? It would be
simpler and easier to navigate. Plus it would be consistent with preferences
and administration menus that do not use dialogs. (See proposal below)
3) Separating the dialog (or menus) into Pause Session (or some other
intuitive name) and End Session (or Shut Down etc) would be great. I have no
idea why things like sleep and shutdown are in the same dialog as their
functionality is of a very different nature.

Here is my proposal for a menu-based version of the dialog:

System
**Session (User)
Lock Screen
Switch User
Log Out
**Pause (Power Saving)
Sleep
Hibernate
**Quit (Shut Down)
Reboot
Power Off

Note: Lock Screen could also go in the Pause submenu, however, locking
the screen is sort of a semi-logout which requires a password so I
placed it in Session/User.

[Bug 45611] window selection problems

2006-05-19 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

I have Dapper with latest updates on dual opteron and
2.6.15-23-amd64-generic kernel.

The option in the system/preferences/windows for selecting windows when
mouse moves over them doesn't seem to work.

Also, when this preference is not enabled (i.e. when I assume I'm using
click-to-raise) clicking in a window sometimes has no effect. Usually
in this situation it takes a click on the title bar after having clicked
elsewhere to bring the window to the top.
