[Bug 712987] Re: empathy crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2011-02-28 Thread Lauri Siltala
Hi,
From what I gather, to give you that information I need to be able to
reproduce the crash. But as I said in the original report, I have no idea
whatsoever how to reproduce it (it has only occurred once) so I don't think I
can help you with that.

[Bug 726470] [NEW] Metacity crashes about 15 seconds after boot-up and Clearlooks vanishes

2011-02-28 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I have a Lenovo X201 tablet computer with a Wacom touch screen. I have the
Desktop theme set to Clearlooks, and use my own wallpaper picture. I have
Compiz effects disabled.
I have Ubuntu Studio Natty with all updates.
Approximately on 26-Feb-2010 there was an update that affected my Clearlooks.
Now when I boot up, my desktop shows brighter and darker colors than it should.
I wait about 15 seconds, and then Clearlooks crashes, to be replaced by a
default theme.
I think the default theme is from gdm, but I'm not sure. It has rounded edges
and does not allow me to double-click to start programs from a link on the
desktop.

[Bug 726480] [NEW] gnome-screensaver forces itself upon xscreensaver users

2011-02-28 Thread Dan Muresan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

gnome-screensaver installs the DBus file

/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.ScreenSaver.service

which unconditionally starts gnome-screensaver whenever some other
process (e.g. nm-applet, update-notifier) pull the trigger. This is
troubling for users of non-gnome desktop environments, e.g. LXDE.

A workaround for me was to install the following
/usr/local/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.ScreenSaver.service:

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.gnome.ScreenSaver
Exec=/bin/sh -c 'if xscreensaver-command -version /dev/null 21; then renice
+10 $$ /dev/null 21; while sleep 60; do :; done else exec
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver; fi' gnome-screensaver-placeholder

The dummy process remains active because if it exited immediately, dbus
might try to restart gnome-screensaver. I don't know if this is really
necessary.

First of all, this needs to be fixed -- screensavers should not step on
each others' toes. Secondly, is there a more elegant workaround? Note
that because of bug #726471, a user can't override a misguided
/usr/share/ service file in his home (~/.local/share) configuration:

[Bug 726480] Re: gnome-screensaver forces itself upon xscreensaver users

2011-02-28 Thread Dan Muresan
My remark about processes that pull the trigger was based on an
empirical observation: if I start LXDE with a disabled
/etc/xdg/autostart/update-notifier.desktop, xscreensaver runs, and there
is no gnome screensaver. Whenever one of nm-applet or update-notifier
starts, dbus loads gnome-screensaver.

What these two applets seem to have in common is that they both pop up
small banner-like notices. I can't find any actual code in update-
notifier that tickles the screensaver.

[Bug 432309] Re: gtk.show_uri uses firefox, not what's configured into default apps for gnome

2011-02-28 Thread Antti Kaihola
I'm seeing this in a Lubuntu desktop session when using Terminator
0.95-0ubuntu1 and Chromium 9.0.597.94~r73967-0ubuntu0.10.10.1. My
/desktop/gcome/url-handlers/{http,https}/command settings are both
/usr/bin/chromium-browser %s, but Terminator still opens links in
Firefox.

Also, doing this in a terminal opens Firefox instead of Chromium:

python -c import gtk;gtk.show_uri(None,
'http://bugs.launchpad.net/', 0)

If your desktop environment uses xscreensaver, you should simply not
have the gnome-screensaver package installed. If the gnome-screensaver
package isn't installed, the dbus service file isn't there.

[Bug 400863] Re: ck-history can take a *long* time to run, during which gdm is unusable

2011-02-28 Thread Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
We have a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS machine set up in vmware for serving a git
repository over ssh and our Hudson instance do several polls a minute.

This is how our /var/log/ConsoleKit looks:

root@Sandbox:/var/log/ConsoleKit# ls -l
total 457424
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 228364612 2011-02-28 14:41 history
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 210159903 2011-02-01 08:00 history.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12436950 2011-01-01 07:45 history.2.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10235104 2010-12-01 07:46 history.3.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6888399 2010-11-01 07:43 history.4.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root293954 2010-10-01 07:37 history.5.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 267 2010-09-14 15:56 history.6.gz
root@Sandbox:/var/log/ConsoleKit#

This has resulted in a load over 1 for the last couple of weeks as the
vmware instance primarily is at the login screen, and I've just analyzed
it and found that the culprit is ck-history with 99% cpu usage.

Is there any particular reason why fancy history parsing is necessary to
provide a _server_ login screen?

How do I disable this behaviour?

Thanks in advance

/Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen

[Bug 710582] Re: webkit crashes on amd64 architecture with SIGSEGV in WTF::OSAllocator::reserveAndCommit() was: webkit does not implement assert sanely

2011-02-28 Thread Martin Pitt
For the record, here this reproduces perfectly well with

  kvm -m 768 -cdrom ./natty-desktop-amd64.iso -boot d

then starting the live system, and then running

  /usr/lib/webkitgtk-1.0-0/libexec/GtkLauncher

it hangs a while during apport collection, and then crashes.

GtkLauncher runs fine on my workstation, but that has 4 GB of memory.
The upstream bug indicates that this only crashes with less memory.

We might apply the overcommit_memory workaround in casper for the time
being, if we can't find a real solution for this?

[Bug 726542] Re: Nautilus crash when open Preferences

2011-02-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 726558] [NEW] drawer in gnome-panel was emptied on upgrade

2011-02-28 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I did a upgrade today on my natty system where I use the Classic Desktop.
In my panel I have 1 drawer. Prior to upgrade it had 3 launchers in it, after
upgrade it was empty.

This is the second time this has happened during the natty development
cycle. After the first, I removed the empty drawer and added a new one.

I'm not sure what version I upgraded from (last dist-upgrade was ~ 2011-02-25),
but the version upgraded to is

 Title:
OpenWith/OtherApp does not 'remember' the selected app

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

When selecting a file of some type or a directory, the Open With menu
shows a list of apps and the option to Open Other Applications that
gives a dialog listing all the apps (some several times) with a
checkbox to 'Remember this application' -- so far as I can tell, it
never remembers; I have been using VLC to open video files for as long
as I can remember, and VLC still is not in the list, and I have never
selected gmplayer to open video files, yet it is in that list. Also,
in opening a directory I frequently use VLC to open DVD image
directories, yet here again VLC has never migrated into that select
  box.

Can the select list be edited or reset to reflect the choices I
  actually use?

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.10, but so far as I recall this
behaviour has been in Nautilus since the beginning.
