[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread David Siegel
I'm sorry for those of you who don't want to change years of muscle
memory, but right-click is more common that middle click and should have
the easier gesture; 2-tap for right-click, 3-tap for middle-click. If
you are a heavy middle-click user, you should certainly change the
settings on your computer to assign the easier gesture to meet your
needs, but 2-tap should default to right-click.

Re: [Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread David Siegel
@Evgeny, oops, sorry if I read the bug incorrectly!

If 3-tap truly takes takes an unhuman skill to perform, then it
shouldn't be assigned any gesture.

Yes, middle-click is a great and venerable feature that I sometimes
use, and that many people commenting on this bug find indispensable.
But more people use right-click than middle-click, and many new
laptops are dropping physical buttons altogether (especially
netbooks). I am not referring only to Macs, but I'd still wager that
the number of users running Ubuntu on Apple laptops, where right-click
is performed with 2-tap, has already exceeded the number of Ubuntu
users who use 2-tap for middle-click.

Re: [Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows Unmount, Eject and Safely Remove Drive

2010-03-31 Thread David Siegel
I wouldn't worry that you can't technically Eject a USB stick. If the user
only sees Eject, will the user think technically I cannot eject a USB
device because the USB port lacks the mechanism to forcefully remove the
occupying plug, so I am not sure what to do at this point. Or, will the
user be more confused if they see both Eject and Safely Remove? I think
the latter case (both are shown) is more likely to confuse, therefore we
should only show Eject.

For 10.10, we should find a better word than Eject -- something with good
semantics for CDs and other media.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-03-30 Thread David Siegel
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: metacity
+
+ - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for
several releases
+ - Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this
+ - The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by
changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all
applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open
right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is
that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which
usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best
fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around
each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing
(in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border
thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although
the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally
all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these
have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the
  position of the metacity team).

That's not what I said. Users are of course free to use the terminal if they
wish, I don't mean to prevent them from doing that; and as far as options
are concerned, moderation is always better than starvation. I just think
that applying the pattern of designing one interface for normal users and
a different interface for advanced users is naive and will lead to a
disjointed feeling desktop for all.

[Bug 392589] Re: Default setting for remembering password should be remember until logout

2010-02-17 Thread David Siegel
Yes, but which case is the 80% use case -- user wants the password to be
remembered for the duration of the session and will not be asked for
different credentials for the same SMB share, or a user will be asked
different credentials? If the latter is a corner case, which affecting SMB
shares only suggests it is, we should still consider changing the /default/
behavior so that most users benefit from a better default, while the
possibly relatively smaller population of SMB users exhibiting the use case
Seb describes should be the ones to use a non-default setting.

If more than 80% of users would benefit from the remember until session
ends options, and the remainder of users would still be able to accomplish
tasks involving different credentials for the same share, and it doesn't
pose a significant security risk, then I would favor changing the default. I
think the issue is more complex than I understand so I am going to defer to
those who understand SMB use cases better.

Re: [Bug 513045] Re: Transition to full-screen/slideshow mode is too slow

We should just fix the slow transition and not create a new checkbox.
What is needed here is a better default behavior. F-Spot should strike
the right balance between pretty effects and performance -- surely
every application shouldn't add an ugly mode toggle ;)

The 3-second transition is egregious, so turning the transition off
would also be an acceptable solution if we cannot simply speed it up.

[Bug 290703] Re: ssh connection should open the user directory by default

2010-01-29 Thread David Siegel
This seems like a reasonable paper cut. Using Nautilus for FTP or SFTP
is a fairly common workflow for transferring files. Sure, most users are
not affected, but I know quite a few average users who use FTP for
basic tasks like updating personal/small business web sites, and making
it so that they do not have to navigate to ~ is a huge improvement.

[Bug 489946] Re: nautilus audio preview should be active only in a focused window

2010-01-25 Thread David Siegel
I will reply on the reporter's behalf.

The assumption should be that the user usually does not intend to
interact with unfocused windows. I'd guess that more often than not,
placing the cursor over an audio file in an unfocused window is not a
good indication that the user has chosen to preview this file. Besides,
requiring that the user bring a Nautilus window into focus in order to
preview audio files on hover is not a huge requirement. Furthermore, the
burden of proof should not be on those who say this odd behavior should
be eliminated; the Nautilus project should justify this bug/feature or
it should be fixed.

The mute checkbox occurs on the RHS of the slider in many other

Placing the mute checkbox on the RHS is not obviously a usability flaw,

where this checkbox is and wouldn't consider it an improvement to have
it moved to the LHS.

[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)

2010-01-09 Thread David Siegel
  1. I marked the bug invalid /in the hundredpapercuts project/ -- this
does not mean that the current behavior is acceptable or that the
proposed improvement isn't good; it simply means that the proposed fix
does not meet the definition of a paper cut given at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut. Paper cuts should have obvious, non-
contentious solutions and this change looks like it could be disruptive.
The actual project that this bug occurs in is ultimately responsible for
the fix -- hundredpapercuts doesn't decide which bugs are not fixed, so
being marked Invalid in hundredpapercuts is no cause for alarm.

  2. I do not think the current behavior is good; I'm not sure why
Matthew believes I think it is!

If we remove the proposed tab order change, I think this can be a paper
cut. This would mean that the only change of behavior would be moving
focus back to the filename entry when navigating with the mouse. Still,
the change required to a standard Gtk component could be non-trivial, so
someone more familiar with the actual implementation of this solution
will have to make the final determination as to whether this can be
considered a paper cut.

[Bug 206547] Re: Open (but do not raise) new conversation windows automatically

2010-01-04 Thread David Siegel
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: empathy

On up-to-date hardy amd64, when I receive a message, the tray icon start
blinking but the message is not shown. I have to click the tray icon to
see it on a new window (or an open window, depending on my confs). This
is very annoying, specially if my panel containing the tray is set to
autohide. There should be an option to open messages automatically
and/or a better visual message notification (like pidgin's
  guifications).

[Bug 185928] Re: Keyboard shortcut Space restarts track, should be play/pause

2009-12-27 Thread David Siegel
Pedro, bug #71228 is more closely related to the upstream bug; I think
it's confusing that this bug (regarding the keyboard shortcut) also
references that bug.

[Bug 206547] Re: Add option to open messages automatically

2009-11-30 Thread David Siegel
The paper cut would be to change the default behavior, not to implement
and present the user with an option. I think we should create and
milestone the more direct paper cut, Open (but do not raise) new
conversation windows automatically.

[Bug 279406] Re: Shut Down dialog doesn't open in the foreground

2009-11-30 Thread David Siegel
Marking invalid /as a paper cut/, as this is not consistently
reproducible (I cannot reproduce it, nor can mac_v), so it makes it
difficult to fix. I also suspect that the sporadic nature of the problem
means the technical details underneath the issue are non-trivial.

[Bug 403072] Re: New *empty* folders should show friendly message instead of white space

2009-11-23 Thread David Siegel
Can you provide evidence that this is a needed change? Is there a user
pain here? Would users appreciate this change? If you can collect some
user data, that would be excellent; otherwise my intuition is that
people who create new folders already know what to do with them.
