[Bug 644659] [NEW] Enable extra typographic characters conflicts and overrides Adding Esperanto circumflexes option in gnome-keyboard-preferences
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center On all Ubuntu versions since Adding Esperanto circumflexes option was introduced, if conflicts with Enable extra typographic characters option. Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to System - Preferences - Keyboard 2. Open Layouts tab, click Options... 3. Enable Add Esperanto circumflexes (Dvorak or QWERTY, doesn't matter, I use QWERTY). 4. Make sure Key to choose 3rd level is enabled 5. Open Gedit, type additional Esperanto characters by pressing s, c, u, j, h, g with 3rd level key. You should get ŝ, ĉ, ŭ, ĵ, ĥ, ĝ correspondingly. 6. Back in keyboard preferences window, enable Enable extra typographic characters located under Miscellaneous compatibility options 7. In Gedit, type the same sequence again. You'll get §, ©, ŭ, „, ĥ, ĝ — half of the characters in question are replaced. Desired behaviour: The best possible thing would be to ensure we have an option to choose which setting overrides another in this case. I suppose it's a lot of work. My point is: people that are enabling Esperanto circumflexes do need those and do know what they are doing. I suppose they would rather have Esperanto characters working at the cost of §, © and „ in extra typographic characters. Perhaps a note in the preferences window warning about this override would be nice, too. [Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
As far as I'm concerned, we have some behaviour that a lot of users don't like, we have a patch to configure the behaviour the way anybody likes (and the patch is the debian patch, so it can be used with no additional issues), the patch is working and — please point our if I'm mistaken here — doesn't break anything being applied. The most sensible thing to do right now is to include this patch in Ubuntu version of gnome-settings-daemon and let people, not g-s-d default, deside for themselves. Whether the current default configuration is good for default or not is the whole other story, after all, Ubuntu is becoming known for controversial default settings — most users don't care about defaults as long as they can tweak things to they liking. As of now, the issue in question is untweakable. We have a patch to make it tweakable. Why on the Planet of Earth can't we just have this patch included and discussion closed?! -- Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
Sebastien, I definitely see your point there, but let me observe that the possibility to tweak touchpad behaviour this way is not a new feature, it's a very old feature broken by the new g-s-d since in Karmic and Lucid. And it's definitely not late to fix bugs, especially regression bugs. Alberto, thanks for the decision and your time and effort in fixing this. @Everybody: Is it a sound idea to open a new bug (with wishlist priority, for sure) to include the patches Yuri has provided, or do we from now on stick with setting up the driver and don't let g-s-d interfere? -- Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
David, please consider the following: nearly all touchpads have hardware buttons for right-click. Nearly none of them has a hardware button for middle-click. It takes an unhuman skill to perform a 3-finger tap, so with 2-finger tap assigned to right-button, the only usable way to perform a middle click is to plug in a mouse. Middle clicks are of great use in Linux (clipboard insertion to name one of the essential things), so having no way to do them is a bad bad choise. Anyway, that's not what the bug was about. The bug was about the fact that there was no way to change the default behaviour at all. Now there is a way (or will be, as soon as Alberto's upload builds), and that's the fix. What the default setting should be is another topic altogether. -- Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 563276] [NEW] No way to tweak multi-finger tap reaction
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon In current Karmic and Lucid gnome-settings-daemon ignores x.org's and synaptics driver's settings concerning 2-finger and 3-finger tap behaviour and resets it's own hard-coded configuration as soon as an input device is added/removed. This behaviour effectively renders multifinger tap settings unchangeable by the user. Gnome-settings-daemon should either not mess with those settings at all and inherit them from X (not a good idea since the settings in question shoud better be per-user, not per-system), or there shoud be an option to configure the behaviour user desires by means of gnome-settings- daemon itself. I must say that of all the *.txt files that reside in my library folder, this is the only one that causes such problems, other text files are safely ignored by Rhythmbox. Perhaps, Rhythmbox should ignore this file as well, but it doesn't. This behaviour was introduced after upgrade to Jaunty Alpha. In Intrepid the file was ignored as it should be. I'm really surprised this bug has low priority. Having a *.txt file somewhere in the library I have to tell Rhythmbox not to try finding a codec for text/html every time I start it — is that sane? I mean, every time I start Rhythmbox I'm presented with annoying evidence that this piece of software is so poorly designed it can't tell media files from text! [Bug 10713] Re: Broken context-sensitive spell check in Evolution (Greek, Hebrew)
Simos, I did not exactly follow the way you've described, I used the way I usually add to get spellchecking support for various languages. Anyway, I was able to reproduce this bug with Greek. Here's what was done: a. I don't install full support for all the languages, since I'm quite comfortable with Russian as a system language. Instead, I install aspell packages for corresponding languages, since GNOME (and Evolution as a part of it) relies on aspell to do spellchecks. So I did sudo aptitude install aspell-el for Greek, restarted Evolution, opened a new message, activated Greek spellchecking in Edit - Current languages menu, and then pasted the example phrase you've provided into the editor. The last word appeared underlined as a mistype. 1. F7 did not found any misspelled words, despite the fact that last word was marked as such. 2. Secondary click on the underlined word did not bring in any suggestions at all. b. After that, I have typed in a phrase in Russian, проверка русской арфографии. This phrase contains a mistype in last word (should read орфографии), and this word was underlined as mistyped. After that, I tried to explore the bug again. 1. F7 ignores Greek mistype, and only shows Russian one (with valid suggestions). 2. Secondary click on underlined words brings no suggestions, neither for Greek nor for Russian mistypes. c. Then, I turned Greek spellchecking off in menu, leaving other languages on. After that, all words in Greek phrase were underlined (as expected, since Greek dictionary was no longer active), as well as the last (actually mistyped) word in Russian phrase. In this situation: 1. F7 ignores Greek words and shows Russian mistyped word with valid suggestions. 2. Secondary click on underlined words brings no suggestions, not even for Russian. d. Then, I created a new message, kept Greek spellchecking disabled, and typed in the Russian example (no Greek in this letter). 1. F7 works as intended. 2. Secondary click works as intended. e. Then, I pasted the Greek example into the second message. Secondary click got broken, repeating situation [c]. f. After a few more tests, Russian was stably producing situation [a] (both F7 and secondary click don't work) with all the mistypes I have previously used. Removing Greek support totally (sudo aptitude remove aspell-el) didn't help fix Russian back again: the examples I have used when Greek was installed produce situation [a], while some other Russian mistypes work correctly. All other languages I use (Swedish, German, English, Esperanto, Ukrainian and Lithuanian) work correctly. So here is my conclusion: Greek spellchecking in Evolution is buggy and effectively breaks other languages as well. Right now, I even have no clue how to repair Russian back again... -- Broken context-sensitive spell check in Evolution (Greek, Hebrew) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/10713 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
