By default the display gets mirrored with only 1024x768 (4:3) because this is the highest common resolution of the two reported by xrandr. I can switch to a large desktop formed by the two screens with the System Settings (section Display) with each screen using its native resolution. This is a kernel regression from 3.8.0-7-generic to 3.8.0-19. I can mirror with a higher resolution running the commands: xrandr --addmode HDMI1 1366x768 xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1366x768 xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1366x768 --same-as LVDS1 This is rather awkward when using a projector. The problem also persists when connecting the external screen to the Mini DisplayPort (with adapter) instead of to the HDMI. I did not test with 12.10 by myself, but according to the comment from Gizmo Chicken below this worked correctly under 12.10, so this is a regression and not a feature request. @Bobik-s and others experiencing this problem- For reference, the bug noted in the bug report title is actually a duplicate of bug 872652 (and glad to hear that 3.0.0-15 fixes it for you, Bobik-s). I also confirm that Alex Davis's kernel patch https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/10/2/185 fixes the problem (and in a better way than my gnome-settings-daemon patch). [Dell Studio 1558] I have published an installable Ubuntu Oneiric kernel PPA with that patched applied (the build is pending, and won't likely be available until some time tomorrow): https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/stuck-backlight Feedback to this bug report will be appreciated. Somtimes I get the screen back by switching to a console tty and then back to the X tty. But, the only reliable way I can get a screen to come back on is to close the laptop lid (so the system suspends) and then open it. The display will turn on for resume. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 872652] Re: screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung
The problem is caused by a recent change to gnome-settings-daemon (the application of debian/patches/00git_dont_restore_brightness.patch); I'm working on a fix. I also note that the bug only occurs if the system is plugged in to A/C power at the moment gnome-settings-daemon first detects that the system is idle. When on battery power, the problematic patch does not come into effect, and the backlight works as it should. (Simply unplugging the A/C power after the problem occurs does not help, so this isn't really a useful workaround). ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) = gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Kamal Mostafa (kamalmostafa) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/872652 Title: screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: I have been using Kamal Mostafa's kernels for my Dell Studio 15 for a few releases. Now, in oneiric, the brightness can not be changed unless I add acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel command line. The brightness adjustment works fine when I make this change. However, when I add this command line option, it introduces another issue where when the display goes to sleep, it does not resume. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 827517] Re: screen brightness keys toggle from max to min-brightness (no steps between)
The intel_backlight kernel component has now landed in Oneiric (bug 568611), so this bug in gnome-settings-daemon is the only thing precluding proper brightness-keys controls for a wide range of laptops. Please apply this trivial patch to fix it. ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium = High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/827517 Title: screen brightness keys toggle from max to min-brightness (no steps between) Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: For /sys/class/backlight interfaces which offer more than 20 brightness levels (e.g. the forthcoming 'intel_backlight' interface; LP #568611), gnome-settings-daemon miscalculates the step amount, resulting in StepUp always driving the brightness to maximum and StepDown always driving the brightness to minimum (or backlight-off depending on the interface). Note that most backlight interfaces (which offer less than 20 levels) don't hit the bug so don't exhibit this problem.
