[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058881] Re: [snap] Allow chromium snap to access Pressure Stall Information (PSI)

2024-03-30 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Spamming three lines to dmesg every 10 minutes forever is pretty
intolerable. Please fix this regression.

It seems the AppAmor profile should be updated to allow Chromium
access to the pressure stall information for it to monitor and manage
  it's processes?

  Alsa info:

Also note that with file at /etc/udev/hwdb.d/60-dell-mic-mute-hotkey.hwdb
generated with the following content:
  # Dell platform kernel driver

And with udev database updated: sudo udevadm hwdb -u

The microphone mute key works, but the mic mute led does not work.

Bug description:
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist with an internal 1366x768 (16:9)
display and I have connected and external 1920x1080 (16:9) monitor via
HDMI. By default the display gets mirrored with only 1024x768 (4:3)
because this is the highest common resolution of the two reported by
xrandr. I can switch to a large desktop formed by the two screens with
the System Settings (section Display) with each screen using its
  native resolution.

This is a kernel regression from 3.8.0-7-generic to 3.8.0-19.

I can mirror with a higher resolution running the commands:

  xrandr --addmode HDMI1 1366x768
  xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1366x768
  xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1366x768 --same-as LVDS1

This is rather awkward when using a projector.

The problem also persists when connecting the external screen to the
Mini DisplayPort (with adapter) instead of to the HDMI.

I did not test with 12.10 by myself, but according to the comment from
Gizmo Chicken below this worked correctly under 12.10, so this is a
regression and not a feature request.

The output of xrandr --prop with both screens connected in large-
  desktop-over-both-screens mode (no mirroring):

  Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3286 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767

  [Original Report]
Starting some weeks ago my graphics has been misbehaving a bit. This started
with starting in low graphics mode from time to time, or booting to a VT
instead of the LightDM greeter. Today I had a complete crash while running a
Google Hangout. I've attached a picture of the screen output in case that's
helpful.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1136699] Re: xserver crash in drm_vblank_count_and_time

2013-03-11 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Chris-

Here's the kernel in question:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.8.0-7.15/+build/4318151
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-raring.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/tags/Ubuntu-3.8.0-7.15

I've attached the disassembled drm_vblank_count_and_time() from that.
I'm confused as to why the oops RIP shows as
drm_vblank_count_and_time+0xd/0x60 but 0xd doesn't seem to land on an
instruction boundary in drm_vblank_count_and_time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876711] Re: Screen brightness resets to minimized when screen turns off

2011-12-21 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Bobik-s and others experiencing this problem-

For reference, the bug noted in the bug report title is actually a
duplicate of bug 872652 (and glad to hear that 3.0.0-15 fixes it for
you, Bobik-s).

I have prepared a PPA test kernel for Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) including a
patch which might address the remaining min/max on every step problem:

https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/inverted-backlight

Feedback to this bug report will be appreciated.

** Package changed: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

The brightness of the laptop screen (Dell D430, intel video, standard

While trying to make it maximized using standard keys the brightness

brightness up the progress bar goes up and then down with every
press. Still after several presses it's possible to maximize the
  brightness of the screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872652] Re: screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung

2011-10-25 Thread Kamal Mostafa
I also confirm that Alex Davis's kernel patch
https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/10/2/185 fixes the problem (and in a better
way than my gnome-settings-daemon patch). [Dell Studio 1558]

I have published an installable Ubuntu Oneiric kernel PPA with that
patched applied (the build is pending, and won't likely be available
until some time tomorrow):

https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/stuck-backlight

Feedback to this bug report will be appreciated.

The gnome-settings-ppa noted in comment #15 is no longer recommended.

Title:
screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung

Status in Gnome Settings Daemon:
  New
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
After the screensaver fades the screen to black and turns off the
backlight, tapping a keyboard key does NOT turn the backlight back on
again. The backlight is stuck off making the system appear to be
  hung.

This a regression in Ubuntu 11.10.

  - (original problem description) -

[The original problem description is below, however it has been
determined that the problem occurs with the the stock 11.10 release
kernel and does not actually relate to acpi_backlight=vendor.]

I have been using Kamal Mostafa's kernels for my Dell Studio 15 for a
few releases. Now, in oneiric, the brightness can not be changed
unless I add acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel command line. The
brightness adjustment works fine when I make this change.

However, when I add this command line option, it introduces another
issue where when the display goes to sleep, it does not resume.

Somtimes I get the screen back by switching to a console tty and then
back to the X tty. But, the only reliable way I can get a screen to
come back on is to close the laptop lid (so the system suspends) and
then open it. The display will turn on for resume.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872652] Re: screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung

2011-10-18 Thread Kamal Mostafa
** Description changed:

+ After the screensaver fades the screen to black and turns off the
+ backlight, tapping a keyboard key does NOT turn the backlight back on
+ again. The backlight is stuck off making the system appear to be
+ hung.
+
+ This a regression in Ubuntu 11.10.
+
+ - (original problem description) -
+
+ [The original problem description is below, however it has been
+ determined that the problem occurs with the the stock 11.10 release
+ kernel and does not actually relate to acpi_backlight=vendor.]
+
I have been using Kamal Mostafa's kernels for my Dell Studio 15 for a
few releases. Now, in oneiric, the brightness can not be changed unless
I add acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel command line. The brightness
adjustment works fine when I make this change.

However, when I add this command line option, it introduces another
issue where when the display goes to sleep, it does not resume.

Somtimes I get the screen back by switching to a console tty and then
back to the X tty. But, the only reliable way I can get a screen to come
back on is to close the laptop lid (so the system suspends) and then
open it. The display will turn on for resume.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872652] Re: screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung

2011-10-17 Thread Kamal Mostafa
The problem is caused by a recent change to gnome-settings-daemon (the
application of debian/patches/00git_dont_restore_brightness.patch); I'm
working on a fix.

I also note that the bug only occurs if the system is plugged in to A/C
power at the moment gnome-settings-daemon first detects that the system
is idle. When on battery power, the problematic patch does not come
into effect, and the backlight works as it should. (Simply unplugging
the A/C power after the problem occurs does not help, so this isn't
really a useful workaround).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 827517] Re: screen brightness keys toggle from max to min-brightness (no steps between)

2011-08-24 Thread Kamal Mostafa
The intel_backlight kernel component has now landed in Oneiric (bug
568611), so this bug in gnome-settings-daemon is the only thing
precluding proper brightness-keys controls for a wide range of laptops.
Please apply this trivial patch to fix it.

screen brightness keys toggle from max to min-brightness (no steps

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
For /sys/class/backlight interfaces which offer more than 20
  brightness levels (e.g. the forthcoming 'intel_backlight' interface;
LP #568611), gnome-settings-daemon miscalculates the step amount,
resulting in StepUp always driving the brightness to maximum and
StepDown always driving the brightness to minimum (or backlight-off
  depending on the interface).

Note that most backlight interfaces (which offer less than 20 levels)
don't hit the bug so don't exhibit this problem.
