ApacheCon North America 2020, project participation

2019-10-01 Thread Rich Bowen
Hi, folks,

(Note: You're receiving this email because you're on the dev@ list for
one or more Apache Software Foundation projects.)

For ApacheCon North America 2019, we asked projects to participate in
the creation of project/topic specific tracks. This was very successful,
with about 15 projects stepping up to curate the content for their
track/summit/event.

We need to know if you're going to do the same for 2020. This informs
how large a venue we book for the event, how long the event runs, and
many other considerations.

If you intend to participate again in 2020, we need to hear from you on
the plann...@apachecon.com mailing list. This is not a firm commitment,
but we need to know if you're, say, 75% confident that you'll be
participating.

And, no, we do not have any details at all, but assume that it will be
in roughly the same calendar space as this year's event, ie, somewhere
in the August-October timeframe.

Thanks.

ApacheCon Europe 2019: Join Struts Hackathon!

2019-09-09 Thread Yasser Zamani
Dear Struts Community (@user, @dev, @pmc),

There will be a hackathon space at ApacheCon Europe 2019 in Berlin
reserved for Struts. It will be available on 23rd/24th October from 1:00
PM for 2/4 hours.

We want to invite everybody to participate on the hackathon where we are
collaboratively researching, discussing and developing effective usage
of Asynchronous [1] using Struts. Then we are trying to add it into Struts.

That's our initial default topic, would you like to amend? If so,
collaborative development on project source code, improvements to
project documentation, and development of example apps or tools built
upon Struts are all encouraged.

Furthermore, it's a nice opportunity to get in touch with other users,
contributors and committers.

More details will be available leading up to the event, but here’s
generally what to expect:

- Dedicated space with chairs, power, wifi, snacks, and caffeine.
- Tables dedicated to Struts.
- ‘Getting Started’ discussions for new and aspiring committers
- (industrial) IoT Corner with industrial equipment to code against

Interested? Email u...@struts.apache.org to amend topic or just to count
attendees :)

Thanks!
Apache Struts Team

ApacheCon CFP closing soon (11 February)

2017-01-18 Thread Rich Bowen
Hello, fellow Apache enthusiast. Thanks for your participation, and
interest in, the projects of the Apache Software Foundation.

I wanted to remind you that the Call For Papers (CFP) for ApacheCon
North America, and Apache: Big Data North America, closes in less than a
month. If you've been putting it off because there was lots of time
left, it's time to dig for that inspiration and get those talk proposals in.

It's also time to discuss with your developer and user community whether
there's a track of talks that you might want to propose, so that you
have more complete coverage of your project than a talk or two.

We're looking for talks directly, and indirectly, related to projects at
the Apache Software Foundation. These can be anything from in-depth
technical discussions of the projects you work with, to talks about
community, documentation, legal issues, marketing, and so on. We're also
very interested in talks about projects and services built on top of
Apache projects, and case studies of how you use Apache projects to
solve real-world problems.

We are particularly interested in presentations from Apache projects
either in the Incubator, or recently graduated. ApacheCon is where
people come to find out what technology they'll be using this time next
year.

Important URLs are:

To submit a talk for Apache: Big Data -
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-north-america/program/cfp
To submit a talk for ApacheCon -
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-north-america/program/cfp

To register for Apache: Big Data -
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-north-america/attend/register-
To register for ApacheCon -
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-north-america/attend/register-

Early Bird registration rates end March 12th, but if you're a committer
on an Apache project, you get the low committer rate, which is less than
half of the early bird rate!

For further updated about ApacheCon, follow us on Twitter, @ApacheCon,
or drop by our IRC channel, #apachecon on the Freenode IRC network. Or
contact me - rbo...@apache.org - with any questions or concerns.

Thanks!

ApacheCon Seville CFP closes September 9th

2016-08-30 Thread Rich Bowen
It's traditional. We wait for the last minute to get our talk proposals
in for conferences.

Well, the last minute has arrived. The CFP for ApacheCon Seville closes
on September 9th, which is less than 2 weeks away. It's time to get your
talks in, so that we can make this the best ApacheCon yet.

It's also time to discuss with your developer and user community whether
there's a track of talks that you might want to propose, so that you
have more complete coverage of your project than a talk or two.

For Apache Big Data, the relevant URLs are:
Event details:
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-europe
CFP:
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-europe/program/cfp

For ApacheCon Europe, the relevant URLs are:
Event details: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-europe
CFP: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-europe/program/cfp

This year, we'll be reviewing papers "blind" - that is, looking at the
abstracts without knowing who the speaker is. This has been shown to
eliminate the "me and my buddies" nature of many tech conferences,
producing more diversity, and more new speakers. So make sure your
abstracts clearly explain what you'll be talking about.

For further updated about ApacheCon, follow us on Twitter, @ApacheCon,
or drop by our IRC channel, #apachecon on the Freenode IRC network.

(CFP) for this event is now open, and will remain open until
September 9th.

The event is divided into two parts, each with its own CFP. The first
part of the event, called Apache Big Data, focuses on Big Data
projects and related technologies.

Website: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-europe
CFP:
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-europe/program/cfp

The second part, called ApacheCon Europe, focuses on the Apache
Software Foundation as a whole, covering all projects, community
issues, governance, and so on.

Website: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-europe
CFP: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-europe/program/cfp

ApacheCon is the official conference of the Apache Software
Foundation, and is the best place to meet members of your project and
other ASF projects, and strengthen your project's community.

[ANNOUNCE] CFP open for ApacheCon North America 2016

2015-11-25 Thread Rich Bowen
Community growth starts by talking with those interested in your
project. ApacheCon North America is coming, are you?

We are delighted to announce that the Call For Presentations (CFP) is
now open for ApacheCon North America. You can submit your proposed
sessions at
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-north-america/program/cfp
for big data talks and
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-north-america/program/cfp
for all other topics.

ApacheCon North America will be held in Vancouver, Canada, May 9-13th
2016. ApacheCon has been running every year since 2000, and is the place
to build your project communities.

While we will consider individual talks we prefer to see related
sessions that are likely to draw users and community members. When
submitting your talk work with your project community and with related
communities to come up with a full program that will walk attendees
through the basics and on into mastery of your project in example use
cases. Content that introduces what's new in your latest release is also
of particular interest, especially when it builds upon existing well
know application models. The goal should be to showcase your project in
ways that will attract participants and encourage engagement in your
community, Please remember to involve your whole project community (user
and dev lists) when building content. This is your chance to create a
project specific event within the broader ApacheCon conference.

Content at ApacheCon North America will be cross-promoted as
mini-conferences, such as ApacheCon Big Data, and ApacheCon Mobile, so
be sure to indicate which larger category your proposed sessions fit into.

Finally, please plan to attend ApacheCon, even if you're not proposing a
talk. The biggest value of the event is community building, and we count
on you to make it a place where your project community is likely to
congregate, not just for the technical content in sessions, but for
hackathons, project summits, and good old fashioned face-to-face networking.

[ANN} Reminder: TAC Assistance to ApacheCon NA 2011 closes July 8th

2011-07-07 Thread Rene Gielen
Forwarded on behalf of the Travel Assistance Committee:

Hi All,

Just a friendly (and final) reminder that applications for financial
help to attend ApacheCon NA 2011 in Vancouver close this coming Friday
8th July (2200 BST : UTC+1)

Financial assistance is available for Travel (planes, trains, whatever),
Accomodation (at the conference venue hotel) and Conference entrance
fees. Dependant on your circumstances will decide how much of that you
would be given.

Please visit http://apache.org/travel for more information and a link to
the application form.

Remember: We DO help people get to ApacheCon and other Apache events
every year, we DO want to help people get there who otherwise could not,
that is why we exist.

Spread the word, you are welcome to tweet, blog, email, post, phone or
smoke signal to anyone who you think might benefit from attending
ApacheCon this year.

Kind Regards,

The Travel Assistance Committee.

Travel Assistance applications now open for ApacheCon NA 2011

2011-06-06 Thread Rene Gielen
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF)'s Travel Assistance Committee (TAC)
is now accepting applications for ApacheCon North America 2011, 7-11
November in Vancouver BC, Canada.

The TAC is seeking individuals from the Apache community at-large
--users, developers, educators, students, Committers, and Members-- who
would like to attend ApacheCon, but need some financial support in order
to be able to get there. There are limited places available, and all
applicants will be scored on their individual merit.

Financial assistance is available to cover flights/trains, accommodation
and entrance fees either in part or in full, depending on circumstances.
However, the support available for those attending only the BarCamp (7-8
November) is less than that for those attending the entire event
(Conference + BarCamp 7-11 November). The Travel Assistance Committee
aims to support all official ASF events, including cross-project
activities; as such, it may be prudent for those in Asia and Europe to
wait for an event geographically closer to them.

More information can be found at http://www.apache.org/trave/index.html
including a link to the online application and detailed instructions for
submitting.

Applications will close on 8 July 2011 at 22:00 BST (UTC/GMT +1).

We wish good luck to all those who will apply, and thank you in advance
for tweeting, blogging, and otherwise spreading the word.

Regards,
The Travel Assistance Committee

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Applications for ApacheCon EU 2009 - Now Open

2009-01-25 Thread Martin Cooper
Forwarded at the request of the TAC:

The Travel Assistance Committee is now accepting applications for those
wanting to attend ApacheCon EU 2009 between the 23rd and 27th March 2009
in Amsterdam.

The Travel Assistance Committee is looking for people who would like to
be able to attend ApacheCon EU 2009 who need some financial support in
order to get there. There are very few places available and the criteria
is high, that aside applications are open to all open source developers
who feel that their attendance would benefit themselves, their
project(s), the ASF or open source in general.

Financial assistance is available for travel, accommodation and entrance
fees either in full or in part, depending on circumstances. It is
intended that all our ApacheCon events are covered, so it may be prudent
for those in the United States or Asia to wait until an event closer to
them comes up - you are all welcome to apply for ApacheCon EU of course,
but there must be compelling reasons for you to attend an event further
away that your home location for your application to be considered above
those closer to the event location.

More information can be found on the main Apache website at
http://www.apache.org/travel/index.html - where you will also find a
link to the online application form.

Time is very tight for this event, so applications are open now and will
end on the 4th February 2009 - to give enough time for travel
arrangements to be made.

Good luck to all those that apply.

Regards,
The Travel Assistance Committee

If you're interested in attending a Struts 2 / Roller BOF at

The higher number we have, the more likely we are to get a good time

beer and Dave Johnson (from Roller) has volunteered to give a quick
presentation on migrating from Struts 1 to Struts 2 in Roller.
Unfortunately, ApacheCon does not provide projectors for BOFs, so if
we want a presentation, we'll have to find a projector.

Thanks!

Re: ApacheCon

Would be useful, but limited to those who know/use WW, and I don't
think any of those three guys can make it to ApacheCon US.
A Struts 1 to Struts 2 topic, now thát's something entirely different
(damn, there goes my proposal).

Anyway, while I do applaud any attempt at getting more people to try
out S2, I'd like to see some more advanced topics like the talk Jason
gave at TSS 2005 [1].

I mean, for a somewhat intelligent developer, figuring out how S2
works, takes just a couple of minutes and one architectural overview.
They're probably already familiar with interceptors, actions and well,
results. Annotations, Ajax, etc .. is not that rare anymore in the
world of (java) web frameworks, and being able to build a blog from
scratch in 10 minutes is just .. well, not exciting anymore (note: I'm
not arguing about the usefulness - but that's information that I can
find on the web within 10 minutes, and not something I want to go to a
conference for).

I hope it are those intelligent developers we can win over, with
top-notch features, ease speed of development, etc. They'll be
making the decision (or at least, that's what I hope) about what
framework to use for their next entreprise project. Leave the 10 min
blogs to the rails/PHP guys.

My 2 cents, not to be taken too seriously - it's friday after all,

Even if it is Friday, this is very well articulated :-).
Unfortunately, I must confess that I've rarely seen such sessions, and
this not because the presenter was not good enough but mainly because
a conference gather together people on different levels and you will
not like to loose the beginners. If you check the conference
programmes you'll notice that most of the topics are medium level, the
rest being beginner (and just a few advanced).

So, I guess for those top-notch developers we are left with the last
10-15 minutes opened for questions :-).

Sorta :)

Part of the problem is that I find most of S2 fairly
intuitive (a very good thing) but that makes it harder
to know what people might want to know. You know?

How about a full or half day training session? I'd

That'd be a possibility.

My original thoughts (besides interceptors) had
included something focusing on testing, including
view-layer with FreeMarker (avoiding
browser/HttpClient tests) or some of the type
conversion bits.

Any further thoughts on this? It would be nice if it didn't conflict

How about Thursday night? Any preference on 8 or 9 pm? (Do we just

I know it's a little early for this, but I just purchased my
conference pass and plane ticket today (early discount ends soon). I
arrive Sunday evening around 8 pm.

I'm going to try to stay with Don Brown if they give him a room with
2 beds, however, in case that doesn't work out, please keep your ears
open for anyone who may have a spare bed. While free is always nice,
I'd settle for 1/2 price ;)

Also, call me if anyone wants to hook up for a beer or three :D)

Later.

Closer than October :)

Right now, I'm updating the MailReader to lose the aliases and exploit
wildcards and namespaces. We should also remove the aliases from
Showcase. (WW-1353)

WW-768 is a fairly serious issue, since duplicate IDs are not valid XHTML.

Under WW-1340, quite a few of the snippets seem to be broken.
