Do you keep a list somewhere of which warnings to use with -Werror?
I'm too lazy to keep such a list updated as gcc adds more warnings,
even if I had one to start with. This script is less work. Most
builds I do produce a list of fewer than a dozen items, so I can scan
the list very quickly.

Show warnings from a C/C++ build

2016-07-15 Thread Jerry James
Attached is a little script I use when doing a mock build with gcc or
g++, to see what warnings the compiler emitted. I usually ignore
-Wunused* warnings, as those aren't usually dangerous, but I pay
attention to -Wstrict-aliasing, for example. This is a way for me to
quickly see if any "dangerous" warnings were emitted, and has led to
several patches being sent to upstream projects. Sent here in the
hope that it will help other packagers. Regards,

Request package page: namespace choice

2016-07-15 Thread Jerry James
I just pushed the button to request a new package in pkgdb. I have
gotten into the habit of ignoring the namespace dropdown at the
bottom, since it has only had one option. But I happened to glance at
it, and I'm glad I did, because it said "docker". There are two
choices now, "docker" and "rpms". Is it really a good idea for the
default to be "docker"?

Also, has something been sent to the list about the difference between
the 2 namespaces? If so, I missed it.

Review swap: foma (rebasing Voikko, the Finnish spell-checking stack)

2016-07-15 Thread Ville-Pekka Vainio
Hi all,

I've been away from Fedora for a while and during my absence the Finnish
spell-checking stack called Voikko has gone through major changes. I've
started the work to rebase the packages in Rawhide to the newest
upstream versions.

The Finnish dictionary is now using the new VSFT format and needs foma
to be built. That's why I'm starting with the foma package.

The bug report is here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1357110

There's also a COPR for this work:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/vpv/Voikko-4.0/

I'm willing to do a review swap, preferably C/C++ or Python stuff.

I think at some point it was a link to, like, /var/log/wtmp or
something like that. I could be dreaming it, I always have brain cramps
when it comes to that file.

And yes, now you mention it, of course it's obvious that the file will
be bigger when large UIDs are in play, but I was missing that - it
explains some things that didn't add up...

We can meet in the middle and make this LOG_NOTICE. That's not the
usual LOG_INFO, but also not the higher LOG_WARNING.

I'm glad you've commented on the thread. I admit that I was personally
surprised to find that such a feature had been activated without
logging.

Would it be reasonable or feasible to activate a "WARNING" level for
UserKillProcess, similar to that used by SELinux? For an admin
considering this feature, it could be invaluable to generate a day or
week of logs about which processes *wouild* have been killed. I'm
particularly thinking of some hand-run backup tools used by former
colleagues, tools that used all manner of MySQL, Postgresql, rsync,
dump, tar, and scattered backup tools run manually as opportunities
occurred.

From your explanation, I think you're correct. I'll note that
reporting "SIGTERM" operations might be useful as an admin selectable
debugging uption, I don't have a good sense of how much it would spew
into the logs. Might it be useful as a debugging option? Do you need
or want a feature request for that?

> abandoned scope process is different however, as in that case the

Please note that my personal concern is processes for which logging
out or losing a login connection *should not* shut down the process.
Whitelisting them seems infeasible, and modigying them all to work
well with KillUserProcess quickly becomes a herculean task. Just
thinking of my work in the last few years, they include "dd", "rsync",
"tar", "mysql" and its related commands, "psql" and its related
commands, "gzip" and all its variants, "xz" and all its variants,
"bzip2" and all its variants", "mock", "koji", and "make".

Lst: I'm afraid the list also includes the wrapper "nohup", which many
of us use to log long-running tasks. It's especially useful when we
don't want to incur the overhead of using "screen" or "tmux", and of
leaving those dangling sessions. And let's be honest: as soon as
"nohup" is effectively whitelisted. the game is pretty much over. The
most system abusive processes, exactly those for which KillUserProcess
is most effective, can typically be wrapped with nohup.

Orphaning pypy's epel5 branch

2016-07-15 Thread Michal Cyprian
Hi,

We've decided to orphan epel5 branch of pypy package. There is pypy in version
1.8 which is really outdated (current version is 5.3.1), it doesn't make sense
to update it and the maintenance is quite difficult.
I was not able to build it properly after application of fix for CVE-2016-0772
python: smtplib StartTLS stripping attack.

Re: Package Reviews Statistics

2016-07-15 Thread Michal Novotny
The truth is that the script for the review awards will need to be written
almost from a scratch and it seems to be a longer shot from where we are
now. As a lazy programmer, I need to cheer for the stats being sent to the
list :).

Oh, never mind, found http://www.noah.org/wiki/Lastlog_is_gigantic whic
h explains the size issue at least. I'm sure it used to be a symlink,
though? Oh well.

Weird behaviour of /var/log/lastlog on F24/Rawhide?

2016-07-15 Thread Adam Williamson
Hey, folks. I just noticed something a bit odd in the behaviour of
/var/log/lastlog . IIRC, this is supposed to be a symlink that's
pointed to the most recent log file to be updated (somehow or other).
However, in openQA tests and also on my workstation, I've seen it be -
seemingly - an extremely large regular file which doesn't actually take
up as much space as it should. For e.g., right now this is how it shows
on my Rawhide workstation:

[adamw@adam openqa_fedora (freeipa-password %)]$ ls -lh /var/log/lastlog
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 43G Jul 14 13:19 /var/log/lastlog

But note the output of du:

4.2G/var/log

of which 4.1G is /var/log/journal . So it seems the file isn't 'really'
taking up any space at all.

Anyone know what's going on?
