[digitalradio] Crossband Military/Amateur Test - May 8

Crossband Military/Amateur Test - May 8

Here's a link for info, freqs and skeds:
http://www.netcom.army.mil/mars/docs/AMC_Test_2010.pdf

This is one of my favorite amateur radio drills. We listen to their freqs,
they listen to ours and we set rigs accordingly for the frequency splits (A/B
split).

It looks like several military stations will be running MT63 durning the test
but most are phone, RTTY and CW.

They also transmit broadcast bulletins (a message from the Secretary of Defense
to all participants). The bulletin is sent from different stations at different
times and modes, including MT63.

Besides being a great drill and practice should we need to intercommunicate
with the military during a major emergency, the event is a lot of fun and is a
great way to show our support for the military.

I'd highly encourage all to participate.

[digitalradio] Don't miss another 6M meter season

2010-05-04 Thread Tony
All,

I suspect there are a number of folks on the reflector who may not be
aware of the fact that the six meter band becomes quite active this time
of year. Sporadic-E season starts in the spring and lasts throughout the
summer. The mechanisms that cause Sporadic-E are such that the 50MHz
openings happen each year regardless of where we are in the 11 year
sunspot cycle.

Single hop contacts out to 1300 miles are most common, but it's not
unusual to work multi-hop distances in excess of 4000 miles. The long
distance openings are thought to be caused by widespread Sporadic-E.

The reason I thought this was worth mentioning is that I've watched many
Es seasons come and go with little to no digital activity and I suspect
that it's probably due to the misinformation being passed around about
high sunspot numbers being the only reason to bother with six.

If you're interested, check some of the cluster sites such as DX Summit
for 50MHz openings throughout the day. Yesterdays openings to the
Caribbean lasted for a couple of hours and the openings to many parts of
the U.S. went on into the late evening.

DX Summit 50MHz --

Sporadic-E is also responsible for the 28MHz openings you'll find this
time of year so this may interest 10 meter buffs. It would be nice to
see more digital activity on 50290.

The first official release of SDR-Radio Console, released May 2nd.

As demonstrated by K3UK at the Allegheny Valley Radio Association
Ripley , NY hamfest May 2nd.

Too bad I did not have a few SDR-IQ's to sell, quite a bit of interest
in both the SDR-IQ and the software.

Hi Andy,

Are you near Ripley? I'm in Houston know but grew up just east of Buffalo in
East Amherst. My father is from Westfield and had a lot of family there so
we used to drive down once a month of so. Of course we went through Ripley
to get there.
