See below for a generously funded professorship here at ETH Zurich (due
October 31):

The Department of Environmental Systems Science (www.usys.ethz.ch) at ETH
Zurich invites applications for an assistant professor tenure track in
Ecology and Evolution in Forest Ecosystems.

The assistant professor develops and leads an internationally recognized
research programme and is expected to integrate into research activities in
related fields at ETH Zurich. He or she will use any relevant experimental,
comparative and/or theoretical approaches to explore ecological and/or
evolutionary processes that affect the composition, diversity, structure,
dynamics and function of forest communities. The search is not limited to
plant-based research, hence scientists working with non-plant forest
components are encouraged to apply.

The new professor will teach in the Master of Environmental Sciences
programme, offering subjects in Forest and Landscape Management that are
also relevant to Ecology and Evolution. Undergraduate level courses are
taught in German or English and graduate level courses in English.

Assistant professorships have been established to promote the careers of
younger scientists. ETH Zurich implements a tenure track system equivalent
to other top international universities.

To apply:
https://www.ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/working-teaching-and-research/faculty-affairs/ausgeschriebene-professuren/systemorientierte-naturwissenschaften/Assistenzprofessur-Ecology-and-Evolution-in-Forest-Ecosystems.html

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a
statement of future research and teaching interests, the names and contact
details of three referees, and three of your most important achievements*.
The letter of application should be addressed to the President of ETH
Zurich, Prof. Dr. Lino Guzzella. The closing date for applications is 31
October 2016. ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family friendly
employer and is further responsive to the needs of dual career couples. We
specifically encourage women to apply.

*ETH Zurich not only supports the quantitative measurement of your
achievements but also the qualitative assessment of academic
accomplishments. This is why you are kindly asked to submit a short
description of your three most important achievements (maximum a half page
each). Besides research findings, these could also be extraordinary
achievements in teaching and its further development, services in the
benefit of the academic community or society, software development, patents,
knowledge transfer and its practical application, spin-off companies or similar.

[ECOLOG-L] Job: postdoctoral researcher on ecophysiology modeling

2016-09-06 Thread David Medvigy
POST DOCTORAL POSITION

Relating Plant Hydraulics to Ecosystem Carbon Accumulation

The Medvigy lab (https://biology.nd.edu/people/david-medvigy/), in the
Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, is
seeking an ecophysiologist or wood anatomist with interest in plant
hydraulics and numerical modeling. The fellow will work both independently
and as part of a collaborative team to study how changes in climate, and
especially precipitation, impact plant hydraulics, plant biomass production,
and ultimately ecosystem carbon balances. This is primarily a modeling
position, but a measurement component may be possible depending on the
candidate.

A range of available projects includes: (1) Modeling and analysis of coupled
water-carbon dynamics in plant stems; (2) Modeling and analysis of the
phenology of wood formation; and (3) Developing and testing models of carbon
allocation to better understand how ecosystem carbon storage will respond to
changing climate regimes.

To align with these projects, the candidate should have a strong working
knowledge of mechanisms related to tree stem growth and/or plant hydraulics,
and how these mechanisms depend on the physical environment. Expertise in
the numerical modeling of ecosystems and/or organisms is preferred, but
outstanding candidates with an experimental background will also be
considered.

The position is designed to ensure a strong training trajectory for a
biologist aspiring to an independent research career. This includes a rich
opportunity to interface with other quantitative/computational/environmental
biologists in the department and across campus, including the Environmental
Change Initiative (https://environmentalchange.nd.edu/), along with
collaborators at other institutions. Salary will be at standard levels per
NIH and institutional guidelines.

Submit a current C.V. and names of 3 references to Dr. David Medvigy,
Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Notre
Dame, IN 46556-0369, dmedv...@nd.edu .

The University of Notre Dame is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
Employer. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

[ECOLOG-L] HABs session at ASLO 2017

2016-09-06 Thread Alan Wilson
Hello. If you are planning to attend ASLO in Honolulu this February 26-March 3
and study harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater, brackish, and/or marine
ecosystems, please consider joining our session. We are especially interested
in including scientists from all career stages. Given the threat that HABs pose
to aquatic ecosystems and human health, we are encouraging presenters to
highlight the management implications of their research. Note that the abstract
deadline is 14 October 2016. If you have questions about our session, please
let us know. Thanks for spreading the word about our session. See you in sunny
Hawaii. Bryan, Chris, Raphael, Thad, Jeffery, and Alan

Session title: SS021 - Crossing disciplinary boundaries across the
freshwater-marine continuum to advance the understanding of harmful algal
blooms (HABs)

Session link:
http://www.sgmeet.com/aslo/honolulu2017/sessionschedule.asp?SessionID=021

Session description: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) comprised of toxigenic algae
and/or cyanobacteria threaten global marine, estuarine, and freshwater
ecosystems and related services. Their frequency and intensity are hypothesized
to increase with climate change and eutrophication. Although HABs represent a
significant human health threat, the science assessing their occurrence, fate,
toxicity, and risk to public health and the environment remains fragmented
among limnologists, marine scientists, toxicologists, ecologists, chemists and
engineers. While mechanisms that promote HABs across systems are routinely
similar (e.g. elevated nutrients, light, salinity, carbon dioxide,
temperature), a unified understanding of the factors that cause these events is
lacking. Perhaps more importantly, communication gaps among scientists studying
bloom formation and ecosystem effects and those studying the eco- and health
toxicology of blooms have hindered effective HAB managements. This session
seeks to bring together HABs scientists who study multiple aspects of these
events, including their biogeochemistry, chemistry, biogeography, toxicology,
ecology, and epidemiology, as well as approaches to monitor HAB distribution,
genetic diversity, and toxicity. All types of HABs studies are encouraged
including descriptive, correlative, empirical, and/or theoretical. Given the
environmental and health threat that HABs pose to society, we encourage a focus
on management solutions.
