I bought a brand-new P4/1.8 GHz/256 MB RAM configuration, but maybe with not enough care ? It was without the Iomega Zip which is an old device. I first installed the OS, configured and tested it; when everything worked (network, sound ...) then I installed the Iomega drive in the box and rebooted. And the Zip was not detected. I am listing below : the symptoms, several tests that I performed, and finally my configuration. 0 - the Iomega Zip is internal, 100 MB capacity 1 - symptoms * harddrake2 does not see the new device * the device is seen by the kernel : in syslog, I get hdc: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive dmesg shows hdc too 2 - tests - the drive itself works ! it was in an old 486 box running RedHat 7.1 : I just mounted the drive back in the 486 and started it : it works, I can mount it and read files on the zip. - my previous box was a P-200 with Mandrake 8.2 and kernel 2.4.18, a SCSI hard disk and another internal 100 MB IDE Iomega Zip : I learned there the ide-scsi configuration. On this P-200 both Iomega Zip work currently, with the ide-scsi driver. - I tried to configure the device by hand, first with the IDE driver, then with the ide-scsi driver: * IDE : declare ide-floppy in /etc/modules, and the corresponding line in /etc/fstab * SCSI, as IDE did not work : declare module ide-scsi in /etc/modules, add hdc=ide-scsi in /etc/lilo.conf, and add /dev/sda /mnt/zip ... in /etc/fstab. For both previous points : it's interesting : the kernel goes far enough : for sda for example : sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB well, I don't know if I should bother about the 1GB. Anyhow, the drive is accessed - but when I want to mount it, I get (I did not write it down accurately) wrong fs type, wrong option, bad superblock in each case, IDE or SCSI. 3 - Configuration - the motherboard is from DFI (is this the error ?) www.dfi.com, model NB70-BC or NB71-BC, I cannot guess which of both it is : for NB70-BC, the Intel chipset is 845D, for the other one it's 845E. But Google shows noone using such motherboard in a Linux configuration :-( - the IDE controller, as returned by lspci, is Intel Corp. 82801BA IDE U100 (rev 05) - there are two IDE connectors, I have the hard drive and a DVD on the first one, the Iomega is alone on the second one, the jumper on Master position. - in the BIOS, the PIO/DMA selection is set to Auto - in the motherboard booklet documentation, they say: PCI Bus Master Controller * Two PCI IDE interfaces * Supports ATA/33, ATA/66 and ATA/100 hard drives * PIO Mode 4 Enhanced IDE (data transfer rate up to 14 MB/sec) * Bus mastering reduces CPU utilisation during disk transfer * Supports ATAPI CD-ROM, LS-120 and ZIP - the DVD is a Pioneer DVD-117 : not really present in the supported hardware list, but it works : one can notice that the installation went very smoothly, but when I logged in the first time, I did not see the drive any more ! I looked around, finally installed myself the driver ide-cd in /etc/modules, then I was able to mount and read CDs. But if I want to do a very large job : such as query all the rpms of an installation CD, I get plenty of errors if supermount is enabled; if it's disabled, there are almost no errors - but I am not sure that there are really no errors at all. If somebody has an idea, it would be nice ! When I run XFdrake it finds both video cards now (new Radeon 7000 and the original integrated video) but I cannot find a configuration that'll work. I really only want the Radeon card set up so that's the one I select. It loaded XFree 4.20 the first time I selected the Radeon card but the system displays a scrambled screen and freezes when I try to test the configuration. I skipped the test one time and tried to 'startx' but that also displayed garbage and froze. Can anyone offer advice on how to get this to work? [expert] KDE3 install fairly well... just a few things to fix
I installed KDE3 last night on my 8.1 box. All in all a good experience. There were some deps I needed to fulfill, probably around 10 or so. KDE3 comes up just fine, as long as you are user. The KDE3 is listed in the kdm login screen dropdown. (I installed KDE3 alongside of KDE2.2.x However I have a few issues. KDE3 isnt an option for login for root. Although when logged in as root, i can run the control center and kde3 is listed. Also my fonts look real bad again. Anti-aliasing is checked (as user) And I get some error about some font xxx-xxx-medium-xxx not being found I get about 4 of those error boxes. Also, some modules arent in control center (user) I get an error box stating I am trying to run an older module, or perhaps it wasnt installed. Sound - Fine, Video - Fine (XF4.1) I didn't delete my .kde dir yet, backed it up though. The icons are real nice in 3, except I don't like the one for Konqueror. Konqueror seems slower to me Any help on the few probs P.S. kfontinstaller seems gone.. is there a new version for kde3? Brian D. Star Office is appropriately designed for installation in such an environment. As a result, properly designed programs seem a little strange in a home desktop environment. However, many apps are not designed to live in a multi-user networked environment (like Netscape which needs to be heavily customized to behave well on a network) and present problems to the sysadmin like inappropriate permissions, wasted disk space for redundant files, unnecessary use of bandwidth for eye-candy, and so on. According to what you guys told me, the sequence for installing StarOffice for multiple users is as follows: 1. Install SO with the /net option 2. Change directory to where soffice is located 3. Execute soffice and follow the instructions 4. Done That seems straightforward to me. But, when I executed soffice, I got an error message that SO was already installed. Anyway, I installed it in my home directory. Maybe I'll try the /net option at some later date if someone knows what happened. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have configured without problems a usb scanner (Epson Perfection 1200 USB) using MDK 8.0 (mknod /dev/usb/usbscanner0 c 180 48; chmod 666 /dev/usb/usbscanner0, insmod usbcore, insmod usb-uhci, insmod scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0104; modifying the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file putting the last line: usb /dev/usb/usbscanner0) and it is runing fine from the laptop, but from the main computer runing 8.1 the scanner is not detected. After read some messages in the list, I am thinking this could be a problem with the use in 8.1 of devs instead of dev (this main computer has also a mandrake 8.0 installed and from this the scanner is accesible without problems. I have used also scanner-drake, the scanner is well detected and ¿configured?, but xsane don't detect it and stops. ¿What can I do to? Second question I have activated the scanner updating xsane, xsane-gimp and all the related dependencies in the laptop and the new look is splendid :-). I have heard about the kde 2.2 faster than the 2.1 releases, so I would like to update it in the laptop. I think that to do that the files coming with the Mandrake 8.1 cds could be enought, couldn't be? I don't know, perhaps I do need download the packages from any mandrake update url, do I? Anyway, what are the files I need to update? I suposse that the kde files and some libs; do you know where can I find the whole list of files to be updated? Will the libs updated give me problems with others packages? Thanks in advance for the help, yours sincerely Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] screensavers not working
I have 8.0 installed on my laptop. Fresh install from format of drive. One of the problems I am having is that I don't get to set a KDE screensaver. I get a listing of xscreensaver files though. And of those, any of them that need GL don't work. i.e. KPipes, Tux, and whatelse is in the GL list. GL is installed on the laptop, and in 7.2 it worked. I have been installing all the KDE updates as they came out, and they would work fine. I am sure I am missing something but what I don't know. I have glx loading in XF86Config-4.. v 4.03 Brian D. [expert] RC-1 upgrade from Beta 2 results
I upgraded my laptop from beta-2 to rc-1 last night. The upgrade went well, it actually let me change cd's this time. I however lost my background settings for kde. Not a big issue. I don't have the connection to the home pc right now, however there are a few errors upon bootup, which I will try to post this weekend, if I get a chance. I didn't see an option for Supermount in the upgrade, is it now defaulted to no? Upgrade took my PIII 650 128M like 2.5 hours though. My Gnome settings also got wiped out as well. I was checking the sites this morning and noticed all the beta download sites have 8.0 beta 3 with the exception of one that has rc-1. I forget which site it was though. But it has a pcmcia network adapter and all I had to do is buy a cross-over cable to connect. Made the pcmcia bootdisk. Notebook boots and asks for the data (IP, domain, etc). Then it tries to get to second stage but fails because no connection to server. On VT 4 I see that cardmgr has loaded the proper modules and declares eth0 as ready to go. But: issueing the command 'network start eth0' it fails with: 'network: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/if-up not found' AFAIK this command is used to give eth0 the IP and to initialize it (or something that way). So what can I do? This file should be on the boot disk, or not? RE: [expert] pci device irq conflicts how do you avoid them?

I hit something like this before: I solved it by pulling one card and removing all the config settings, and then carefully reinstalling it with kudzu. Lazy, I know, but why worry if it works? What's happening is that the sound card was not correctly identified as such; I used get these messages dropping out of X telling me that this weird card had been found, and please e-mail some guy in Mandrake. Do you have them? I did, e-mail him he talked me into installing some rpms, which brought out a lovely problem with rpm, as it didn't recognize my AMD '586. This was only a '486 at heart, I'm now told, so rpm said it was a '486. It nevertheless ran '586 code very well :-}. Just like the K6 is a i586 at heart, and runs i686 code quite happily, except for kernels. I then solved the 300 or so dependency problems, and was asked for the readout of the pnpdump program I had just put in. That was all he wanted. It also uses Irq 11 so I turned off the hpt 366 card in the bios temporarily, and then installed mandrake, worked ok then I was hoping to be able to enable the hpt 366 in the kernel 2.4.2 in order for it to work. ( i assumed this was the reason for the crashing ) I went to check the kernel settings, and hpt 366 in the newer kernel is enabled by default, and it is shown as detected in the bootup, but after detection, it crashes. so I am assuming the fact that the video card (agp) uses irq 11, and the hpt channels use irq 11 ( 2 of them ) is the conflict that crashes my computer upon booting. what I'd like to do: move snd card to irq 5 move video card to irq 10 then the hpt366 can work ok on irq 11 or simply move the hpt 366 to irq 5?
