  SuSE kernel: 2.4.20-4GB
  Both running Xfree 4.3x
  It's gotten to be kind of a challenge no to find out why if I can...

 I think it has something to do with the attempts MDK is making at
 anti-aliased founts.  Not sure.

Very possible, I see there is a directory under /usr/X11R6 for mandrakefont
(or some such), may have a look in there and see what I see.
On the other hand, Slacware and Knoppix will show the correct font until the
Xserver is restarted then the fonts get tiny again, sometimes running
fc-cache will make it show the fonts correctly again, might be a clue.. It
doesn't seem to have any affect in MDK.

Subject: [expert] Advertisment about a digital pictures organizer

I am very glad with the digital camera I bought on Chrystmas (Fuji Finepix S02
Zoom), I have taken lots of pictures of landscapes, minerals, plant
communities and plants (the macro function is runing like a charm).

With Mandrake 9.1 a harddrive icon appears on my kde desktop as soon as I
connect the camera to the usb port (the first time a line is added to fstab).

But I am starting to have too many pictures and I need to organize them. In
the windows environment is known the ACD-See package to do that, including
look for metadata of the pictures and the possibility to look for one
specific picture using keys.

I don't use Windows (just in a computer I have a dual bot system with
windows98 and Mandrake because my son likes to play some games) but I don't
know if there are for linux a similar package to ACD-See. Does anyone know
something similar to ACD-See? or could anyone tell me how have organized the
pictures?

Thanks so much for the help in advance; regards

Joerg - strange things are happening. When you told me to add the new windows

the stanza to lilo.conf. As I said, it worked.

Examining lilo.conf afterwards, I found that the odd mapping lines had
disappeared, and I then seemed to have WindowsOriginal stanza and Windows2
stanza identically set up.

I then deleted WindowsOriginal, and renamed Windows2 to Windows98.

To my surprise, when I get the lilo menu I still see WindowsOriginal and
Windows2. I have no idea where it's reading these from. The current
lilo.conf is attached.

Can you point me at an explanation?

Civilme should be here on this one. If you do a search through the
archives for Civilme + Western Digital you'll find a more complete
explanation but if I remember right it has something to do with the way
WD has chosen to not follow DMA standards. Linux does rather strict
checking and WD doesn't so WD drives can be problematic.

Subject: [expert] Iomega Zip not detected under v9.0

Hello,

I am wondering what is happening. I bought a brand-new P4/1.8 GHz/256 MB RAM
configuration, but maybe with not enough care ? It was without the Iomega Zip
which is an old device. I first installed the OS, configured and tested it;
when everything worked (network, sound ...) then I installed the Iomega drive
in the box and rebooted. And the Zip was not detected. I am listing below :
the symptoms, several tests that I performed, and finally my configuration.

0 - the Iomega Zip is internal, 100 MB capacity

1 - symptoms
  * harddrake2 does not see the new device
  * the device is seen by the kernel : in syslog, I get
  hdc: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive
  dmesg shows hdc too

2 - tests
- the drive itself works ! it was in an old 486 box running RedHat 7.1 : I
just mounted the drive back in the 486 and started it : it works, I can mount
it and read files on the zip.
- my previous box was a P-200 with Mandrake 8.2 and kernel 2.4.18, a SCSI hard
disk and another internal 100 MB IDE Iomega Zip : I learned there the
ide-scsi configuration. On this P-200 both Iomega Zip work currently, with
the ide-scsi driver.

- I tried to configure the device by hand, first with the IDE driver, then
with the ide-scsi driver:
  * IDE : declare ide-floppy in /etc/modules, and the corresponding line in
/etc/fstab
  * SCSI, as IDE did not work : declare module ide-scsi in /etc/modules, add
hdc=ide-scsi in /etc/lilo.conf, and add /dev/sda /mnt/zip ... in
/etc/fstab.

For both previous points : it's interesting : the kernel goes far enough : for
sda for example :
sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB

well, I don't know if I should bother about the 1GB. Anyhow, the drive is
accessed - but when I want to mount it, I get (I did not write it down
accurately) wrong fs type, wrong option, bad superblock in each case, IDE
or SCSI.

3 - Configuration
- the motherboard is from DFI (is this the error ?) www.dfi.com, model NB70-BC
or NB71-BC, I cannot guess which of both it is : for NB70-BC, the Intel
chipset is 845D, for the other one it's 845E. But Google shows noone using
such motherboard in a Linux configuration :-(
- the IDE controller, as returned by lspci, is
  Intel Corp. 82801BA IDE U100 (rev 05)
- there are two IDE connectors, I have the hard drive and a DVD on the first
one, the Iomega is alone on the second one, the jumper on Master position.
- in the BIOS, the PIO/DMA selection is set to Auto
- in the motherboard booklet documentation, they say:
PCI Bus Master Controller
* Two PCI IDE interfaces
* Supports ATA/33, ATA/66 and ATA/100 hard drives
* PIO Mode 4 Enhanced IDE (data transfer rate up to 14 MB/sec)
* Bus mastering reduces CPU utilisation during disk transfer
* Supports ATAPI CD-ROM, LS-120 and ZIP

- the DVD is a Pioneer DVD-117 : not really present in the supported hardware
list, but it works : one can notice that the installation went very smoothly,
but when I logged in the first time, I did not see the drive any more ! I
looked around, finally installed myself the driver ide-cd in /etc/modules,
then I was able to mount and read CDs. But if I want to do a very large job :
such as query all the rpms of an installation CD, I get plenty of errors if
supermount is enabled; if it's disabled, there are almost no errors - but I
am not sure that there are really no errors at all.

If somebody has an idea, it would be nice !

Best regards

 I have tried ide-floppy (which is what 8.1 saw it as)
 I have tried ide-scsi as well.. Win works it in this box

Do not use either ide=floppy or ide=scsi.

If this is a clean install of 9.0, not an upgrade,
edit your /etc/fstab.
Remove the existing entry, if any, for your zip and replace it with
this:

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip auto user 0 0

Use mount -a or reboot your system.

Put a disk in the drive, issue mount /mnt/zip and you should be able to
access it.

Here are the results of this example:

[root@mrroboto root]# mount -a

mount: /dev/hdb4 is not a valid block device

and it is the same if i use sdb4

This is the slave on the Primary.
hda = 40 hd
hdb = zip 100
hdc = sony cdrw
hdd = toshiba cdrom
sda1 = 9.1G Seagate

Oddly enough sda1 although set to, will not mount at boot. It will mount fine once
booted and all.
The SCSI card is Adaptec 2940.

Go into mcc/mount points and create the device there.
If there is no sda4 entry there for your drive the easiest solution is
for you to do an Expert/Upgrade install with the drive connected so that
the installer can create the device.
You will not need to select any pkgs for installation and you can skip
the network and printer config.
The whole process takes between 10-15 min.

Okay, so in dmesg (do a dmesg dmesg.txt and read it) your Zip drive is a
slave on the first IDE (primary) channel, right?

Well, then you would need to set my earlier /etc/fstab example to:

/dev/hdb4   /mnt/zipvfat nosuid,user,noauto,nodev   0 0

As su do a mount -a

Then right click on your KDE desktop and pick create new floppy (I'm told
CD-ROm will work too) device. Fill in the fields, it should find your Zip
drive then.

BTW, I didn't notice earlier (sorry) do you have supermount disabled as well

Slave, using ATA100 cable. Secondary is a CD-ROM

I tried to let devfs do it's thing, no luck. I disabled supermount, no luck

I never liked either one of these anyway, however did not see any way
to turn them off during install.
So the error I receive is:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip
mount: /dev/hdb4 is not a valid block device

I have tried to edit lilo.conf and change from ide-scsi to ide-floppy.
I understand the norm is to be used as ide-floppy, but mdk9 set it
up as ide-scsi from install.

Also my scsi drive (Seagate) will not mount upon bootup, but manual
mounting once up is fine. The card is a Adaptec 2940.
The error there is the: wrong fs... maybe too many mounted fs's.

I have had problems viewing encrypted dvd's with xine - in that I can't

I used to be able to a year or so ago.. I have taken backwards steps it
seems :)
The default mdk 8.2 setup didn't work for me.. couldn't seem to install
plugins for it.
So I uninstalled and went with the following packages:

package libcss-0.1.0-5 is already installed
package libdvdcss2-1.2.0-2plf is already installed
package libdvdcss2-devel-1.2.0-2plf is already installed
package libdvdnav-0.1.1-0 is already installed
package libdvdread-0.9.3-ogle1 is already installed
package libdvdread-devel-0.9.3-ogle1 is already installed
package libxine0-0.9.10-1 is already installed
package libxine0-devel-0.9.10-1 is already installed
package w32codec-0.50-1 is already installed
package xine-dvdnav-0.9.10-0 is already installed
package xine-ui-0.9.10-1 is already installed
package xvid-0.20020412-3 is already installed
package xvid-devel-0.20020412-3 is already installed

I would have thought these would work.. but they did not.

So I uninstalled them and went with a suggestion from the newbie list
of: xine-0.4.3-fr1.decss.rpm

that didn't do the trick for me either.
So I am asking here. Can I not use this impressive list of packages
above and somehow just enable libcss support?
Help?

many thanks

I have Mandrake 8.1 with kde3 installed. All has been fine until a couple of
nights ago when I decided to scan some pics with kooka. I had problems
with this in 2.x, however tried it. Well my system locked solid, couldn't ssh,
telnet, nothing. So after reboot I find that no users have real access to their
taskbar icons. You can click one, once that one is running, the taskbar seems
locked (nothing but a nice image).
I have tried making a new user, same results.
What do I do to get kde functioning again.
I have deleted relevant items in /tmp. Shutdown system safely. Nothing works

All things work if I bring them up in konsole
So currently I run kde progs through konsole

Well the Intel Proshare 500 has a BT848 chip on it, so
I would think it could be used as video capture card.
Seeing as there is no tuner on the card, it cant do TV.
You should be able to do modprobe bttv to get it going.

I have an IBM box (300PL) that has integrated S3 video.

My son wants better video so I've obtained a 64MB Radeon
7000 PCI video card. I can't use an AGP card even though the
machine has an AGP slot because of the way the case is built
- one of those proprietary designs that only a few cards
will properly fit.

I was surprised to find that the hardware drake didn't
detect any hardware changes when the box started up. I
finally have the box booting to init 3. When I run XFdrake
it finds both video cards now (new Radeon 7000 and the
original integrated video) but I cannot find a configuration
that'll work. I really only want the Radeon card set up so
that's the one I select. It loaded XFree 4.20 the first time
I selected the Radeon card but the system displays a
scrambled screen and freezes when I try to test the
configuration. I skipped the test one time and tried to
'startx' but that also displayed garbage and froze.

Can anyone offer advice on how to get this to work?
Thanks...

[expert] KDE3 install fairly well... just a few things to fix

I installed KDE3 last night on my 8.1 box. All in all a good experience.
There were some deps I needed to fulfill, probably around 10 or so.
KDE3 comes up just fine, as long as you are user. The KDE3 is listed
in the kdm login screen dropdown. (I installed KDE3 alongside of KDE2.2.x
However I have a few issues. KDE3 isnt an option for login for root. Although
when logged in as root, i can run the control center and kde3 is listed.

Also my fonts look real bad again. Anti-aliasing is checked (as user)

And I get some error about some font xxx-xxx-medium-xxx not being found
I get about 4 of those error boxes.

Also, some modules arent in control center (user) I get an error box stating
I am trying to run an older module, or perhaps it wasnt installed.

Sound - Fine, Video - Fine (XF4.1)

I didn't delete my .kde dir yet, backed it up though. The icons are real nice
in 3, except I don't like the one for Konqueror. Konqueror seems slower to me

Any help on the few probs

P.S. kfontinstaller seems gone.. is there a new version for kde3?

On dual boot systems, Windows expects the hardware (BIOS) clock to be in
localtime not GMT (UTC not precicely the same thing anymore). So you have a
choice. Leave hwclock set to local time and live with it on the Linux side or
set the BIOS clock to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and have the time always
be wrong under windows.

J. Grant wrote:

 Anway, I'm in linux most thats what counts, but I have a problem with
 the clock, MDK seems to use clock set to GMT where as the other OS
 seems to think clock set to TOKYO.

 I found in /etc/sysconfig/clock

 ARC=false
 UTC=true (I changed this to false)
 ZONE=Asia/Tokyo

 I assumed UTC was the american name for GMT, as i had read that
 somewhere, but nothing happed after i changed it to false. I even rebooted!

 So how does one have 2 OS's co-existing on the same system with the same
 time zone?

 Windows does not have any options unfortunatly. I set MDK to GMT, but
 then all my email times are messed up.

 Any solutions appreciated. (but its only the windows time so not a
 serious loss IMO)

Try this:

If partition hda6 is where your boot records for Linux are, do this:
dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
copy this file over to your C drive or over to the drive that boots up
Windows with the boot.ini file.

In boot.ini add this line:
C:\BOOTSECT.LNX=Linux Mandrake 8.1

This should do it for you.

 I've checked the dev dir and I couldn't find sda4 (though /dev/sda is
 pointing the right place - cdrecord -scanbus confirms that my system has a
 zip on 0,6,0).

 How can I create /dev/sda4? Or how can I mount /dev/sda4?

 Many thanks

The 4 in the sda4 is supposed to refer to a partition number on the drive. I
suspect that Zip drives don't have that many partitions.

Does mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/zip2 work? Do you have any other SCSI

I think WMA is a Microsoft proprietary format. If it is, then it is very

'reverse-engineering' it would be illegal (the DMCA would apply, at least

 Then, just install it without the /net option, selecting your home
 directory for install (a.e. /home/lee/office52).

It can't do a straightforward install because Linux is a multi-user,
networked OS. Star Office is appropriately designed for installation in such
an environment. As a result, properly designed programs seem a little
strange in a home desktop environment. However, many apps are not designed
to live in a multi-user networked environment (like Netscape which needs to
be heavily customized to behave well on a network) and present problems to
the sysadmin like inappropriate permissions, wasted disk space for redundant
files, unnecessary use of bandwidth for eye-candy, and so on.

According to what you guys told me, the sequence for installing StarOffice
for multiple users is as follows:

1. Install SO with the /net option
2. Change directory to where soffice is located
3. Execute soffice and follow the instructions
4. Done

That seems straightforward to me. But, when I executed soffice, I got an
error message that SO was already installed.

Anyway, I installed it in my home directory. Maybe I'll try the /net option
at some later date if someone knows what happened.

Hi List!

I'm looking for a product (if it really exists!) to allow me to
print via Ethernet using parallel printer. I mean, a kind of box with one
RJ input (so I could set a IP address) and some parallel ports, where I
would connect printers. So I would be able to set printers in my linux
(even Winblows and Applows) to print over network. Is such a thing
possible? Is there a such device?

Thanks for any suggestion.

 iptables-1.2.4-2
 Should I upgrade them?? it all seems to be fine and iptables is
 definately working...

kernel-2.4.16.1mdk-1-1mdk
iptables-1.2.4-2mdk
initscripts-6.40.2-3mdk   ... is what I've got, additionally I have

setup-2.2.0-16mdk  and
lm_sensors-2.6.2-1mdk

   IIRC, setup was a dep for initscripts. 'iptables -L' gave me the
mismatch with kernel version error, so I knew to get the latest for
2.4.16. 'sensors' quit working with 2.4.16,, but an upgrade fixed
that.

   Difference might be that I used the ready made 2.4.16 kernel, but
all the other ones were cooker src.rpms using rpm --rebuild. If your
usin a vanilla source kernel, I have no idea if the supermount patch
will work. I've had no problems with Mandrake kernels = 2.4.13 and
supermount.

/lib/modules/2.4.16.1mdk-1-1mdk/kernel/fs/supermount/supermount.o.gz

 Secondly, with supermount -i enable and mount -a

 should I add them to rc.local???

   No Frank, I just ran them initially to add 'supermount' to fstab.
I believe I forgot to mention to 'umount' all your removable devices
before doin 'mount -a' , mea culpa.

 I really would love to get supermount working for cdrom and
 floppy,, (so samba can share them effectively.)

 any help, much appreciated.

  As I alluded to in my earlier reply, I suspect different people are
gonna experience different results/success/failure, since we're all
runnin different hardware. FWIW, here' my fstab after 'supermount -i
enable' for removable devices

  Upon leaving windows, Linux would not re-boot, because it couldn't

modprobe g_NCR5380 ncr_addr=0x240 ncr_irq=255 dtc_3181e=1

And it works fine for my scanner. The irq=255 is not
a typo, by setting it to 255 lets it grab the first
free irq, if I recall right.

[expert] printing in 8.1 and kde

2001-11-30 Thread Klar Brian D Contr MSG SICN

OK, I have decided devfs isn't for me. I have the nomount option upon boot
My question is how do I get printing to work in MDK 8.1 and KDE. Anything
I print comes out with a complete black page. I can print with my laptop
in Windows (gf likes win better) with no problem. So I assume the driver
wouldn't be the issue, but I am sure I am wrong here :)
Here is my Samba printers section though.

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /tmp
read only = No
create mask = 0700
guest ok = Yes
printable = Yes
print command = lpr-cups -P %p -o raw %s -r   # using client side printer
drivers.
lpq command = lpstat -o %p
lprm command = cancel %p-%j
browseable = No

Cups is set up and sees the printer fine, and verified through the cups web-gui. I
have tried printing from many progs on this system with no success.

Any help appreciated.

How do they deliver, (UPS, Fedex ground or air)?
How long is it taking?

The easiest way out is to boot one of the two with a bootfloppy. This is also

In this message I have two questions, I hope you could help me ^_^

I have a home net composed by the main computer (Pentium III 800,
conected to internet by a cable-modem and runing Mandrak 8.1) and a
Toshiba laptop (celeron 400 conected to the main computer and to
internet by IP masquering; that runs Mandrake 8.0 because I have found
problems to configurate the screen under 8.1; I think is a problem with
XFree86 4.1).

I have configured without problems a usb scanner (Epson Perfection 1200
USB) using MDK 8.0 (mknod /dev/usb/usbscanner0 c 180 48; chmod 666
/dev/usb/usbscanner0, insmod usbcore, insmod usb-uhci, insmod scanner
vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0104; modifying the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file
putting the last line: usb /dev/usb/usbscanner0) and it is runing fine
from the laptop, but from the main computer runing 8.1 the scanner is
not detected.

After read some messages in the list, I am thinking this could be a
problem with the use in 8.1 of devs instead of dev (this main computer
has also a mandrake 8.0 installed and from this the scanner is accesible
without problems.

I have used also scanner-drake, the scanner is well detected and
¿configured?, but xsane don't detect it and stops.

¿What can I do to?

Second question
I have activated the scanner updating xsane, xsane-gimp and all the
related dependencies in the laptop and the new look is splendid :-).

I have heard about the kde 2.2 faster than the 2.1 releases, so I would
like to update it in the laptop. I think that to do that the files
coming with the Mandrake 8.1 cds could be enought, couldn't be?
I don't know, perhaps I do need download the packages from any mandrake
update url, do I?

Anyway, what are the files I need to update? I suposse that the kde
files and some libs; do you know where can I find the whole list of
files to be updated?
Will the libs updated give me problems with others packages?

[expert] screensavers not working

I have 8.0 installed on my laptop. Fresh install from format of drive.
One of the problems I am having is that I don't get to set a KDE screensaver.
I get a listing of xscreensaver files though. And of those, any of them that need
GL don't work. i.e. KPipes, Tux, and whatelse is in the GL list. GL is installed
on the laptop, and in 7.2 it worked. I have been installing all the KDE updates
as they came out, and they would work fine. I am sure I am missing something
but what I don't know. I have glx loading in XF86Config-4.. v 4.03

[expert] RC-1 upgrade from Beta 2 results

I upgraded my laptop from beta-2 to rc-1 last night. The upgrade went well, it actually
let me change cd's this time. I however lost my background settings for kde. Not a big
issue. I don't have the connection to the home pc right now, however there are a few
errors upon bootup, which I will try to post this weekend, if I get a chance. I didn't
see
an option for Supermount in the upgrade, is it now defaulted to no? Upgrade took my

Your partitions may have changed.
Try mounting different partitions, looking for boot.
   # mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt

shouldn't there be something after /mnt since /mnt is a dir
like /mnt/disk or just some name, so long as you mkdir it in
/mnt first?

Hi,

got a notebook w/ a broken cdrom drive. But it has a pcmcia network
adapter and all I had to do is buy a cross-over cable to connect.

Made the pcmcia bootdisk.
Notebook boots and asks for the data (IP, domain, etc).
Then it tries to get to second stage but fails because no connection
to server.
On VT 4 I see that cardmgr has loaded the proper modules and declares
eth0 as ready to go.
But: issueing the command 'network start eth0' it fails with:
'network: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/if-up not found'

AFAIK this command is used to give eth0 the IP and to initialize it
(or something that way). So what can I do? This file should be on the
boot disk, or not?

BTW: There is no os on the notebook.

For some reason, samba wasn't starting at bootload, so I check in the
linuxconf services. It's listed as "manual" and not running. So I click
on the Automatic button for it, do Accept and leave. Later, for some
reason, I went back and was looking at some services, and happened to see
the entry for Smb. Guess what? It still says "Manual"? I experimented
with several other services and discovered the same thing. Also, for some
reason, there are two entries for Imap. This has gotten more than a little
frustrating, I must say. I don't remember running into any of these issues
when I was running 6.1. Some of these issues seem like basic QA oversights.

I hit something like this before: I solved it by pulling one card and
removing all the config settings, and then carefully reinstalling it with
kudzu. Lazy, I know, but why worry if it works?

What's happening is that the sound card was not correctly identified as
such; I used get these messages dropping out of X telling me that this weird
card had been found, and please e-mail some guy in Mandrake. Do you have them?
I did, e-mail him he talked me into installing some rpms, which
brought out a lovely problem with rpm, as it didn't recognize my AMD '586. This
was only a '486 at heart, I'm now told, so rpm said it was a '486. It
nevertheless ran '586 code very well :-}. Just like the K6 is a i586 at heart,
and runs i686 code quite happily, except for kernels. I then solved the 300 or
so dependency problems, and was asked for the readout of the pnpdump program I
had just put in. That was all he wanted.
Mandrake has gone the road of making Linux configuration automatic -
and brougt in many of the problems of this nature. I would prefer an advice
centre saying where to look your problem up, or how to hack it, A course on
Perl by e-mail, and train us all to be capable of hacking our own systems from
a console. If people can master a system, they'll stay with it. But many
windoze users try linux, find it as inscrutable as the Oracle at Delphi, and
get fed up; they are lost to linux for the foreseeable future.

 using mandrake 8.0 beta 1

 my apparent problem:

 according to:  cat /proc/pci

 my sndblaster live uses irq 10
 my matrox g400 uses irq 11

 when I install mandrake, I can't get the hpt 366 on board udma "card" ( on

 to work -- computer crashes upon bootup. It also uses Irq 11

 so I turned off the hpt 366 card in the bios temporarily, and then installed
mandrake, worked ok
 then I was hoping to be able to enable the hpt 366 in the kernel 2.4.2 in order for
it to work. ( i assumed this was the reason for the crashing )

 I went to check the kernel settings, and hpt 366 in the newer kernel is enabled by

 so I am assuming the fact that the video card (agp) uses irq 11, and the hpt
channels use irq 11 ( 2 of them ) is the conflict that crashes my computer upon
booting.

 what I'd like to do:

 move snd card to irq 5
 move video card to irq 10

 then the hpt366 can work ok on irq 11

 or simply move the hpt 366 to irq 5?

 Well I had a chance to use the Matrox

 I really wasn't able to use the second to
 any real advantage. Windows kept opening
 too far down, and I couldn't move them.
 I think it is a KDE issue. I recall read-
 ing that KDE is "not" multi-monitor
 compliant. Thanks for the help, and info

I have been able to get two separate displays working in KDE2, xfce,
GNOME/Elightenment and blackbox, but I can't get xinerama enabled for a single wide
screen.

I'm using 8.0beta2, a Voodoo3 AGP card and a Matrox PCI card.

I am using Option "xinerama" "on" in /etc/XF86Config-4 to enable xinerama (that worked
when I had 7.2 installed with the same hardware).
