Re: [Flexradio] Maestro WiFi

2016-09-23 Thread Steven Hess

No the Wifi is built in.
If you do not see any Wifi networks you may have a defective unit.
It should not take long for them to show up if they are broadcasting a SSID.
My recommendation is you open a support ticket.
https://helpdesk.flexradio.com/hc/en-us/
Here is hte how to on that:
https://helpdesk.flexradio.com/hc/en-us/articles/202118688-How-to-Submit-a-Request-for-Technical-Support
.
My first unit had defective Wifi and Flex promptly replaced it but you must
open a support ticket so they can determine that.
Seems if you do it by phone it's harder to get the ball rolling.
Have you tried a wired connection with CAT cable?

I am going to install Windows 7 Pro on the machine to run SmartSDR
Can you successfully run SmartSDR on Windows 7 Pro under VMwear Fusion
or will I need to install WIndows 7 under Parallels?
Can you have both VMwear Fusion and Parallels on the same machine?

 Hi Steve

Yes, the current iteration of PowerSDR is mature and a fantastic interface
 to
legacy radio’s. There are no bugs that I have found….HOWEVER…
I think there are some features that would be nice to have in PSDR. Not
critical, but would be awesome to have.

 1. Voice recordings - for personal choice, I take my Flex-3000 on regular
 DXpeditions to Mozambique.
I yearn for the facility of being able to have several recordings (not
 just one), like a
quick memory bank of 10 right on the front panel, so you don’t have to dig
 in sub-menus to find it,
where I can select a recording, and with the push of only one
corresponding button next to the recording
of choice, have the radio key itself up, send the recording, and return to
 RX all on it’s own.
The current system where you have to push the PTT, push the play button,
 and release the
 PTT seems a bit archaic.

 2. Working a pileup on CW, I find it quite awkward to adjust CW speed on
the fly. Yes, it can be
done through the FlexControl (if you have one). But I would like to see
 another method. When working
a large pileup, the stations come in at different speeds. It is cordial to
adjust your speed to the station
calling you. It can be time consuming to grab the slider and try to get to
 the correct speed. Possibly
having 4 small boxes, where the speed can be user defined at say 20 25 30
35 wpm. Then all it would
require is just a click of the appropriate box to QRS to work a slow
 operator.

There are a few more much needed features that would be awesome to have,
 but I have forgotten
what they were. But as far as bugs - yes it’s currently very stable.

Flexers

I just logged in to the community. I've been a member but I don't visit it
much.
It is not easy for me to use at this point.

I went to view the PowerSDR section.. I am seeing posts that are for SSDR.
I am not interested in SSDR.
 I can't afford a 6000 series radio.
I have a Flex-1500 and Flex-3000.
I am interested in PowerSDR and the Flex-1500 and Flex-3000.
Why isn't this 6000 series and SSDR stuff filtered out of the PowerSDR
section?
If it's so much better for FlexRadio to force use into this community it's
got to work.
This stuff needs to be categorized so we don't have to filter through the
stuff that isn't relevant to us.
This email reflector does a good job of that pretty much. The 6000 series
users have segregated themselves from it.
.
Going to the Community site it's also not immediately obvious that the
Flex-3000, 5000, 1500 and, PowerSDR even have catagories.
What you see is all SmartSDR and 6000 series listed.
You have to view all and then again PowerSDR and the Older Flex Radios
are pushed down below the new line of product.

Email is easy to deal with.
There is not obvious link to Email me this stuff
What I see is a greyed out symbol for a RSS feed.

medium - in fact it still works - and I hope Flex realizes that many
of us PREFER this medium to the Community/Forum/Facebook paradigm.
AND, using a browser on a smartphone isn't the most rewarding
experience going. On the go, checking email via smartphone is EASY.
  Using Community is NOT.

Why fix - or worse, abandon - something that's not broken?

Is Community Flex's way of distancing itself from those of us
  satisfied with PSDR-based Flex radios?
I hope not, because as a retiree I must not be too profligate with
what $$ are available! Would I like having a SSDR-based radio? Yes,
and I l do like the new system architecture. Am I clamoring for a SSDR
radio? No, because SSDR is not on par with PSDR; and both the F3K and
F5K radios I've been using the past 5 years beat the socks off most of
the knobbed radios I have used in good contesting environments.
The ones that come close, I could not afford.

[Flexradio] Source code for PowerSDR

2014-06-02 Thread Steven Hess
Listmates

We have an individual on the yahoo list claiming that he was given the cold
shoulder when he requested the source code to the open source parts of
PowerSDR.
I know this claim to be false.
How do you prove that they are lying?

They are generally talking trash but claims like this need to be deal with.

I'd like to know what is arrogant about making a radio that surpasses all
legitimate legal requirements by quite a bit?
Most places have a noise floor so high you'll never notice this at all.

Some people just live to complain and tear things down.
I put that in this category.

Lets just drop it.

2014-02-28 Thread Steven Hess
I have 3rd party cookies blocked by default.
Allowing the 3 non FlexRadio cookies associated with this site to be set
allowed my to log in.
I am playing now.

In the mean time I solved my original issue.
My waterfall on my Flex-3000 disappeared however my Flex-1500 running on
the same computer at the same time did not.
A reboot of Windows 7 restored it. I had done a factory reset before doing
that and it didn't restore it. So it was a issue with Windows 7.

As far as the FlexRadio community goes. You have to go looking for the
legacy FlexRadio products. They are non obvious. All you see is 6000 series
FlexRadio products.
They are still selling the Flex-1500 and Flex-3000. They should be
obviously represented. You shouldn't have to go looking for them.
I can't afford a 6000 series radio. I have what I can afford. I am willing
to meet FlexRadio's need to concentrate all the stuff formerly done on the
reflectors on the community.
That said don't force me to go looking for my product category by looking
at all make the link obvious and visible.

Third party cookies and not good. You don't know what they do or what they
are spying on as far as your online activity. That is why I have them
blocked by default.

Thanks for the help effort. Issue resolved.

  Dear Flex Group Members,

I understand the user interface with NaP3 is streamlined from PowerSDR,
removing functions intended for use with the Flex.

This begs the question if there are valuable functions that a Flex can
do with PowerSDR that can't be done with NaP3?

Conversely, does NaP3 do some cool things that PowerSDR can't do?

After the upgrade I've only got 2 watts out on my Flex-1500 before I

I love my Flex-3000 but mechanical relay on a CW rig is a terrible idea to
me.
The Flex-1500 does CW well on a tuned computer system.
If you have latency problems you will not like it.
If your computer underpowered or you can't tune your system you'll have
problems.

You are not hearing from all the people who have no CW issues or have given
up on the list due to a high signal noise ratio.

FlexRadio still fully supports the Flex-5000 both for repair and service.

 Hi Folks,

This post is somewhat similar to a current thread being discussed -on the
merits of purchasing the KX3 or Flex 3000.

I am somewhat committed to trying a Flex or similar SDR radio. As I
understand, the Flex 5000 is no longer being manufactured, but is still
available in some stores/supply houses and can rarely be found used in some
 other places (ebay, etc.).

As this will be my first foray into SDR, I'm not thinking that I want to
invest the full cost of the newest line (the 6000 series), but would
consider the Flex 3000, 1500, or trying to find a used 5000 (or purchase
from a store that still has a stock).

 1. Is there any possibility that replacement or other less expensive line
(similar to the 5000) will be offered in the near future?

 2. I do work some qrp, but mostly 100W or so. The 1500 seems less of
what I want, which leaves the 3000 and some used or a 5000, not being
offered directly by the manufacturer (and not offering direct tech support
anymore- I assume this, although forums such as this may make up for the
lack of direct manufacturer support). If I'm even able to find a 5000, is
it wise to make the purchase with the manufacturer no longer making the
unit and not offering direct tech support/repair?

 3. The 3000 has been described as a stripped down version of the 5000,
and has some things that I'm not excited about (BNC rather than so 239
antenna connectors, etc.), but otherwise seems to offer most of the
features that one would like to have/experience/experiment with in an SDR
radio. If I get a 3000, will this give me a true feel for the SDR
experience, and after a couple of years, give me enough of a feel for SDR
to decide if I want to delve more deeply and possibly look at something
 with more functionality or not?

 4. Just out of curiosity, I assume that dropping the 5000 from the
offerings is meant to drive customers to the 6000 line as the replacement.
I guess I understand this, however, from my reading, it sure seems like
there are a lot of folks that are very happy with the 5000 and that there
is still a lot of active interest in the model. Other than driving folks
toward the 6000, what was behind the decision to drop the 5000? It seems
to me that there is a significant price differential between the two lines,
and that there are those who will likely never be interested in paying the
costs associated with the 6000 series, but might have been able to swing
the 5000- why take this option off the table?

Thanks in advance for any input/advice. If this post is felt to be too
general/inappropriate for this forum, please feel free to reply directly.
My apologies, as I am a total newbie with respect to SDR.

I've been running 5 ms and seemed to have no problems there but am cautious
which is the reason for my inquiry.
I have a Harbach Electronics Soft-Key installed in the SB 200 and also am
using a AmpKeyer in line as it provides a standby mode and I was gifted it.
I have noted the 50 ms and am trying that as it seems like an idea that
will be gentler on the 572b tubes.

But being a conservative person I bought a Sunlight isolation relay box

problems. But then I've long felt that people tend to be overly cautious
which can lead to wanting to be taken care of.

50ms is probably around the minimum for an SB-200.

It all depends on the relay(s). In the case of the SB-200 it's an old
open-frame type, very slow. Amps advertised for QSK use often have vacuum
relays, which can switch many times faster.

If you're running SSB, keep in mind that hotswitching the antenna
contacts is the major issue, but not the only one. Some amp designs (not
the SB-200) have a separate relay for the tube bias, which is often
buffered with a simple R/C network. The point is that you shouldn't put
drive on the tube(s) before the operating bias has had time to switch from
cut-off to operate. In the case of the SB-220 for example, the cutoff bias
is set to a unnecessarily high voltage as a matter of convenience, which
 makes the situation worse.

I have mine set at 50ms. That's a pretty reasonable time for power and
antenna relays to pull in and get seated.

I originally started at 100ms, but the delay was noticable-- not long,
but you could kinda tell it was there. I can't tell 50ms at all, except a
little on CW. I start getting faults in my amp with less than 20-25ms of
transmit delay on 80 and 40 meters. 20 meters I could set it at 0ms and it
 never faults. Go figure.

Re: [Flexradio] TXOut Delay.

2013-09-02 Thread Steven Hess
Seeing as I am using two of these devices in series I am good to go here.

I can understand the relay closure and setting issue. My understanding was
the Grid voltage dropped when keyed? Or am I thinking of something else?

I am trying 50 ms. I am not seeing any real difference in how my rig
responds with the increased setting. I may try an even less aggressive
setting here.

If you have a -125Vdc line to be keyed, use a relay with contacts rated for
that voltage or better. A 30-50ms delay should be fine...

If you don't care about arcing the relay contacts or generating a burst
of nasty, broad signal when you key up,
then of course you'd be right.

If your transceiver could handle the switch voltage/current/inductive
spike of the amplifier relay key line,
you'd be right again. In your case, though, since the SB-200 uses a 120V
relay coil, I somehow doubt the F3K's
switching transistor would tolerate that for long without the isolation
box. Perhaps someone from Flex knows the actual spec.

Not sure how overly cautious applies here?

But being a conservative person I bought a Sunlight isolation relay box

which can lead to wanting to be taken care of.

I originally started at 100ms, but the delay was noticable-- not long,
but you could kinda tell it was there. I can't tell 50ms at all, except a
little on CW. I start getting faults in my amp with less than 20-25ms of
transmit delay on 80 and 40 meters. 20 meters I could set it at 0ms and
 it
 never faults. Go figure.

[Flexradio] FreeDV. USB or DIGU?

2013-08-11 Thread Steven Hess
List mates

I got some good advice from list members on setting up FreeDV as far
as my audio question went privately. Thanks for those responses.

It's just another Digital radio program and sets up just like all
other except for the need of a second audio input and output hardware
device
I found my USB headset so I am ready to go there for the audio input
and output from FreeDV.
VAC is already set up and in I use it for Digital modes all the time.

Question is do I use DGU or or USB?
If you use DGU you have no audio chain processing or other audio
setting getting in the way or causing potential problems so that would
be prefered I'd think.
If you use USB I guess I'd just set a new audio profile up for the USB
headset and use that profile?

Please respond to the list so others can search for this info if they
are looking for this subject in the future.

Thanks in advance

I haven't even listened to the audio out of the headphones jack since I got
my Flex-1500 a few weeks ago but when I did tonight I got a intermittent
white noise at a very high level out of that audio jack. Sounds like
tearing.
I've been using it strictly for Digital mode so I've never had speakers or
headphones plugged in.

A secondary issue is my output power seems erratic. When set at .5 watts it
will jump to full output then drop back to .5 watts randomly.

This is a second Flex rig on the same system. I also am running a Flex-3000
with no problems I can detect in the audio out of the rig.

In the manner of our late great prez RMN, Let me make one thing perfectly
clear! This post is NOT a vote of no confidence for Dudley who is a Flex
Wizard. I'm just querying the brain trust just in case someone may have
useful input. This august group has a lot of grey matter in fine working
order and may think of something overlooked.

I have an F5K which has been working really swell for months with no
problems encountered loading new S/W releases. I'm not doing anything
fancy, just SSB using only one of the RCVRs. I upgraded to the latest S/W
and then... Everything works fine again except PSDR crashes at random but
frequent intervals. Sometimes throwing an error window about an external
device raising an exception and sometimes not. Sometimes cycling the
 on/off
on-screen switch restores operation till another crash and sometimes that
just causes the exception error to display. Rebooting the computer and or
just restarting PSDR seems to have the same result making no difference.

By telephone Dudley professionally guided me through installing the
 legacy
1394 driver and confirmed that I have a good TI chipset. It is capable of
bidirectional streaming at the 800 data rate whereas the F5K is now
streaming both ways full time at 400 data rate vice the previous S/W
 release
using interrupt driven service for the 1394 data. Dudley told me this new
demand on the firewire interface is even more demanding of a good cable
and the driver. So, Dudley is having a new cable mailed to me to arrive
 real soon now.

Yesterday the MTBF for crashing was on the order of a couple hours whereas
before Dudley's intervention it was on the order of a couple minutes. This
afternoon things took a turn for the worse. Invoking PSDR and clicking on
[Start] in Panafall display mode gives a uniform Pink waterfall that moves
down ward at the normal rate filling the entire space with a nice restful
pink. There is no audio. Repetitively clicking the [Start/Stop] on-screen
 button doesn't elicit different behavior.

 Suggestions?

 Hi Jon,

 Is this true?
Martin Lynch and Sons wanted ?25 for the TURF file?
How on earth can they charge that?

I got mine from Klaus for free ... surely the UK dealer gets it for free
from Flex/Klaus too or do they generate their own file?
What is FlexRadio's take on this - Tim/Dudley?

  Rolf,

PowerSDR has always shown 6 digits after the decimal point, 3 the same
size as the digits to the left of the decimal point 3 slightly

 smaller.

This has not changed with v2.6.4.

I notice 2.6.4 now shows the frequencies with four digits after the
 decimal point.
I don´t know if that helps or not, but I personally find it confusing.
E.g. 50.0150 now could be missread as 50.150 if one is not carefull.
Wonder what others think? Maybe it could be made user-selectable?
Thanks for fixing that memory form bug (DE1043). That really helped!

On the PowerSDR software front, we will be limiting updates to bug fixes
  and
essential enhancements in order to devote our resources to the new
 software
architecture. We plan to strictly limit feature additions to PowerSDR so
that we can turn our attention to the new development, which will enhance
our ability to rapidly bring new capabilities to our customers. It is

 customers

If YOU search the archives I know you will find many more.

Good for you David. So you are unhappy with Flex's past performance. I
guess the major question is, What is your point? What is it that you hope
to accomplish? Are you hoping to punish Gerald? Are you hoping to hurt Flex
somehow? Are you hoping to help the rest of us who are too stupid to
 realize how malevolent/stupid Flex is?

We are all big boys (and girls) here. Many of us have owned Flex products.
We are walking into this with our eyes open. I know that I don't really
need your help in this area. I am well aware of what has been promised and
what has been delivered. I even have a pretty good idea what was and is
wrong. I understand why Flex never delivered on its rewrite of PowerSDR and
I also understand why Flex has stuck with PowerSDR even given its
limitations. I also understand how the new architecture of the 6x00 series
is different and how that is going to change how they develop software for
it and why that is likely to produce a product that is far more flexible
and extensible than their previous products were/are.

I guess what I am saying here in a nutshell is, Thank you for your concern
but I don't really need your help.

Re: [Flexradio] Will there be a yearly charge for future PSDR releases for non-6000 owners?

2012-05-19 Thread Steven Hess
I've got no problem paying a reasonable fee for major software
improvements to my Flex-3000. Major and minor bug squashing not so
much but a yearly fee seems reasonable.

People who think you can't charge for the open source part of your
software don't understand open source and are free to fork if they
can.

The customer support part of FlexRadio is second to none and is
something they ought to be rewarded for as well. So a modest yearly
fee seems logical.

living doing it, even though we hate to put a price on the solution to a
 user's problem.

The choice is to charge people per incident or on a time contract. Its very
difficult (and usually not in the support person's character) to negotiate a
payment beforehand nor determine a fair charge for its solution, so the time
contract is really the only thing I have seen work.

So, you might not love it but its a needed thing (if you want our help).

 Colleagues,

Please keep in mind that your Flex radio will continue to work in a superb
fashion under the most recent software release. If Flex chooses to charge a
reasonable amount for future upgrades, you always have the choice of not
purchasing those upgrades. I personally have been waiting for a long time
for them to make such a move; I want them to continue to be a financially
viable company so that they can continue to support my Flex-5000 and
Flex-3000 and hopefully my Flex-6700 sometime in the not too distant

considerable risk in building this company.

Exactly Ed. You hit the nail precisely on the head.

[Flexradio] Sample rates

2012-04-15 Thread Steven Hess
Excuse me for having slept and forgot quite a bit.

Do I need to match all the sample rates to the selected bandwidth I chosen
on my Flex-3000?
So if I select 96k I need to match my VAC sample rate to 96K and my Windows
6 64 sound properties for my VAC inputs and output to 96K?
I have been running 48k forever and decided I wanted to zoom the panadapter
out more and would sacrifice some filter sharpness to do so.

Re: [Flexradio] Dedicating cores?

2012-03-22 Thread Steven Hess
Well I have a good idea of why I don't want to do that now.

I am running PowerSDR, WSPR xChat2 and Air Video server on the
machine and I never see it go over 6% CPU utilization. If I start
streaming a video to my iPad I get a brief spike in CPU utilization to
50% then it's back down to under 6%

For some reason LatencyMon says I have an audio streaming problem.with
real time audio.I may have to save my money and get Neal to tweak my
machine. It was built on one of his former build lists. The FlexRadio
latency monitor recommends Normal mode. I get a occasional DPC hit up
in the 180s but it's usually around 75 or less. Windows 7 64 seems to
send one in the thousands once every few days which glitches the
'audio stream'.

going 24/7 doing something I enjoy. I use my cellular phone (which is a
radio) for text messages (ala packet radio 20 years ago.) the same applies
to my iPad (also a radio.) I usually talk to my Wife and rarely to any
other humans.

What you are experiencing is a spike in deferred procedure call (DPC)
latency causing the driver to lose synchronization with PowerSDR. A quick
stop/start resets everything and reestablishes synchronization. This is a
long-time issue that has been around from the beginning.

The problem is usually a misbehaving driver in your system. The worst
culprits are usually the WiFi (802.11), Bluetooth, and the video driver.
The Ethernet driver also causes problems occasionally. The fix is often to
update the driver or disable the device.

Sometimes there can be programs that cause problems. Someone alluded to
Carbonite which is a known problem. Some versions of browsers and mail
programs have caused problems as well. It is best to make sure that NOTHING
 else is running.

And then there are system configuration changes that can help. I disable
paging which I have found to help substantially. If your system puts
devices to sleep or it switches the processor to low-speed, low-power mode
that can cause problems as well.

So there are lots of things that can affect this. If you want to see when
it occurs, bring up the Flex FireWire driver, click on the DPC button, and
click Clear to start the data collection. It will show you the DPC
latency over time. It will also tell you which mode you should use for your
 driver.

Ah, ham radio changes and evolves. The no-code license was a big
controversy in its day, but now just a few years later no-code hams
are in the majority. About half of U.S. licensees are technicians, and
the other half also contains many no-code ops, with the number
steadily increasing. As their ranks have grown, they have come to
represent a significant market for manufacturers to serve. In Japan,
where there are twice as many licensed hams as in the U.S., VHF
licenses and gear dominate. I would guess that in this country HF gear
leads the market by dollar volume, but maybe not by number of units
sold, and many of today's buyers of HF gear will never use it for CW.
It's plain in reading postings on ham discussion groups that no-code
hams have their own preferences in operating style, equipment, and
activities. But hey, there's enough spectrum for all.

For situations like that, I would recommend using Autohotkeys, where you
can define a AHK file that could turn off the wireless, then start PSDR and
at the conclusion of PSDR re-enable the wireless. I am using it for a lot
of setups, especially people who want to use DDUtil in various combinations
(like with N1MM for contesting, DXBase for dx;ing, fldigi for digi work,
 etc.).

There are several processes that can stop the computer with a long deferred
procedure call. I suggest that you download dpclat.exe from thesyscon.de,
and run it. This will confirm that your problem is indeed with a DPC
 spike.
Let it run in a little window. Watch for the occurrence of a red spike
(that is, over 1000 us.) If it happens, you know that is the cause. Big
buffers can sometimes absorb a short spike, but I'm betting something is
stalling your computer more than a little. If you can't immediately see that
a certain program takes some action and causes the DPC spike, the next step
is to download LatencyMon from Resplendence.com. This one will tell you
which process is stalling everything behind it. Do whatever you have to do
to stop that- update the driver, use the legacy OHCI1394 firewire driver,
don't let the program run at the same time that PowerSDR is running, or
disconnect the piece of hardware that is associated with the process. Or,
you can ask Neal to remote troubleshoot your PC for a nominal fee. Jim

If it's anything like trying to control PowerSDR via TeamViewer from my

pretty limited in control as a true touch screen linked to the computer
isn't. I can see having a touch screen to control certain aspects of the
PowerSDR interface via touch screen. I already run PowerSDR and another
radio application on a second 21 inch monitor. My main monitor is switched
back over to my Linux desktop. Having more control than the marble mouse

Hi Bob

The question isn't its technical capability, its whether I actually use it.

HP had a tough time selling those systems and I think that have pulled that
line off the market, which would indicate that either it was not engineered
properly for the price, or its not that useful an implementation to the
public at large.

I honestly didn't think I was going to like the Hercules MP3 controller
very much, and it exceeded my expectations by a long way. Lets see if using
a touch screen is the same way!

Re: [Flexradio] Amendment to Alternate WSPR programs

John

I am pretty sure WSPR asks what directory you want to install WSPR to
during the installation process. Tell it WSPR2 then navigate to the folder
it installs in and link the exe from WSPR2 to your desktop after the
install. You will have two config files and can avoid having to change
thing every time you want to change rigs. You also can run two instance of
WSPR at the same time this way if your computer can handle it.

I am running two instances of WSPR here on my Windows 7 64 system. I made
some some stub filters and operate on 30 and 20 meters at the same time no
problems. I am currently WSPRing on 10, 20 and 30 meters. One instanse of
WSPR is running on my Linux machine.

  computer sound card.

Here is the problem that may negate your attempt to automate the switching
process. You see, WSPR is broken. WSPR doesn't use the sound-device name
but rather the sound-device enumeration in order to select the sound
device. The problem is, the enumeration changes any time you add or remove
a sound device. Have a set of USB computer mic/headphones? Plug them in and
negate the sound-card settings in WSPR. Same with turning on or off the
1500. The only solution is to make sure you check and reset the sound-card
settings manually every time you start WSPR and every time you add or
remove a device. Given that, you may as well just plan to touch the
settings and not bother with multiple config files.

[Flexradio] Them or me?

2011-12-08 Thread Steven Hess
The panafall screen capture at the URL was in the presence of a S-9 signal.
Was it PowerSDR, my Flex-3000 or their signal causing these images to
appear in the panafall?

http://www.slhess.com/pictures/KE6GLA.jpg

Their signal is not distorted.

Re: [Flexradio] 3000 or 5000

2011-12-07 Thread Steven Hess
My computer fan noise is -40 dBm according to my iPhone and the IC-706 I am
using on 10 meters for WSPR has a more noticeable fan than the Flex-3000
here. The Flex-3000 is some distance away from my operating position.

If a computer fan, which are not that loud, bugs you, then FLEX-3000 when
 transmitting will also bug you.

I mitigated the problem by putting the FLEX-3000 underneath the operating
desk at the far end from where my mic is located. Be careful about putting
it in an acoustic enclosure since the radio has to work at relieving itself
of heat due to the small form factor and low thermal mass.I also use
the Downward Expander in PowerSDR to mute back ground noise. it works much
better (smoother) than the noise gate.

I love my new 3000 and the fan noise makes no difference to
me since I use a professional directional dynamic
microphone. Most decent directional microphones will
not pic up fan noise coming from behind them as they are
designed to be receive sound from the front and slightly off
front to either side. My FLEX 3000 on my desk is maybe
16 inches from the back of the mic - which is on an $80
 telescoping desk boom. No
problems. Wiring the modular mic plug was a
small challenge, but the FLEX website has detailed
explanations of how to wire various mics/cords to
them. It's really not that hard. Good luck, Best

To me, the fan in the 3000 is very noisy and you have

 to deal with the

modular RJ45 mic plug. It's worth it to me to have the

 5000.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] (no subject)

2011-12-04 Thread Steven Hess
I'll have to agree. I have run my Flex-3000 on a 1.4Ghz XP machine with one
gig of ram. It can be done. It was not a satisfactory solution and it
didn't do the Flex-3000 justice. I did it only to see if it could be done.
I run my Flex-3000 on a 6 core AMD based system built off of one of Neal's
past recommended ASRock motherboards with 8 gigs of ram and lower mid range
ATI graphics card that I built. Cool and Quiet is turned off in BIOS and
the machine is locked to 3.2GHz. I have no latency I can hear even with
DPCs that average around 75 us and peak up to 250 us sometimes. My CPU
load running PowerSDR in the panafall mode and two instances of WSPR and
CPU utilization monitor and Xchat averages 5.6%. I have done no tweaking to
Windows 7 64.

A excellent radio deserves a excellent computer. Why would you cripple half
of your radio if you didn't have to? Most off the shelf systems are built
from the cheapest components to meet a price point not to function as well
as they can.

added RX2. I know that many people can enjoy their $3,500 radio with a
$500 PC. But I look outside at my antennae, and figure my PC should at

I admit it right up front. I have a bad-ass computer. Beginning with my
Altair (anybody remember those?) and working forward, I've always built
 my
own computers, with the exception of my last one, which I bought in a
moment of temporary insanity. It was a game-but-lame little Gateway
 with a
Core Duo processor and 2GB of RAM. Now that is gone and I'm typing this
 on
a homebuilt AMD Phenom II 6-core with 16GB of RAM, a wicked fast graphics
card, a nice solid-state drive, and all the trimmings.

The cost for all this luxury? A thousand bucks and change. Much less
 than
most people think, a little more than half the price of a 3000. Two
 hours
of my time to assemble it, another two hours to install the OS, reload
 the
apps, and move over the data.

What's my point? Well, I made the remark a few days ago that a good
 radio
needs a good computer. Ever since, people have been chiming in to report
that they have old or small computers that run PSDR just fine. The
latency is short enough that I've gotten used to it and it mostly doesn't
bother me, said one of our faithful, who took me to task in a private
email for being a computer snob.

Although someone will probably chime in to say that they are able to run
PSDR with a germanium crystal, a cat's hair, a bobby pin, and two rubber
bands, we continue to hear all the little bits of guidance: You'll need
 to
  run GBoost...run Autorun...turn off services...get a registry
 optimizer...

I appreciate that some folks (like me!) are workin' stiffs without a lot
 of
extra cash. But we all saved up for our Flex radios and we can all save
 up
for good computers. And then we won't need GBoost or Autorun or PC
Optimizer. We won't need one computer to run the radio and another to do
everything else. We won't have to worry about latencies or CPU usage.
  We
can just play in the radio sandbox.

A good radio needs a good computer.

Yeah, the Samsung XL2370 has a problem with that. The buttons on the front
are soft buttons, that is, spots on a touch-screen interface. When there's
an RF field, these buttons can think they are getting pushed and shut the
monitor off or make other changes.

However, another user posted a solution. He taped some copper foil over the
soft buttons and ran a ground strap from it to the back of the monitor,
which he said cleared up the problem.

The older Samsung 2333 has no problem with strong RF fields, puts out no RF
noise, and has a great picture. My setup is an ASUS laptop with the 2333
 monitor providing an extended desktop.

They both have good color fidelity but I use the 2370 for Photoshop because
its color fidelity is really tops.

ATI video cards and drivers will give you the lowest DPCs in the video
card category. I swithced from Nvida and was shocked. It was a huge
improvement. I think I spent about 57 dollars in the card on sale at NewEgg.

I am running 8 gigs and Windows 7 64 seem to like it.

I did not see any difference (the computer does show 4 gig now).
CPU is running 40-60% with everything buffered up, screen refresh rate at
10, at 96khz sample rate, and dropouts from time to time. No dropouts at
 48KHz.

I expected some results from adding another 2 gig of memory but it seems
 to have done nothing really.
Any time I open something else, like resource monitor, the dropouts go up.

Turning the panadaptor off reduces the cpu usage to about 20%, which seems
 odd for just that.
The computer can run the radio, decode all the I and Q stuff, at 20%, and
to display the panadaptor takes 40% of the cpu??? At a refresh of 10?

I may try and update the video driver and see what that does.
