Slightly OT: Word Choice for iPad App

2013-03-25 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, all!

Please forgive the slightly off topic question.
If any of you have done any documenting of iPad apps (or any tablet for that
matter), what word do you use for choosing the actual app? On a computer we
usually use click or select. So is this touch, select, open?

Thanks!
Kristy

Hi Kristy

From the Microsoft Manual of Style, Fourth Edition:

Use tap and double-tap instead of click and double-click when writing
content specific to touching a
screen or using a pen pointing device. Tap means to press the screen with a
finger or pen tip and then
to lift it, usually quickly.
Use tap and hold if required by the program to achieve a specific
interaction. Do not use press and
hold or touch and hold.
Microsoft style
Tap the Internet Explorer icon.
Tap Internet Explorer.
Tap and hold the album that you want to remove, and then tap Delete.

And, from the Apple Publications Style Guide:

tap (n., v.) Use to describe the action on a trackpad or Multi-Touch device
that’s
equivalent to clicking. Users can tap with one or more fingers (depending
on the
device and the action the user is performing). Don’t use tap on.
Correct: Tap Return to move from one field to another.
Correct: To open an item’s shortcut menu, tap the item with two fingers.
Correct: You can zoom out by tapping the map with two fingers.
Incorrect: Tap on the video you want to play.
See also click; double tap (n.), double-tap (v.), double-tapping (n., v.);
press; type (v.).
tap and hold Don’t use. Tap means to touch and release quickly, so use
touch and hold
instead. See also click and hold.*

The standard iOS terms are tap, drag, flick, swipe, double tap, pinch,
and touch and hold. Somebody put some thought into making them
unambiguous. (The difference between flick and swipe is hard to
explain, but meaningful to experienced users.)
