Re: Upgrading 9.1-BETA1 - 9.1-RC1

2012-08-25 Thread Thomas Mueller
from Maarten Billemont lhun...@lyndir.com:

 I've installed a FreeBSD server using the BETA1 release because RC1 was
 delayed. I notice the 9.1-RC1 is available now, so I thought I'd upgrade
 ASAP.

 The following command, however, fails me:

 freebsd-update -r 9.1-RC1 upgrade
 Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 3 mirrors found.
 Fetching metadata signature for 9.1-BETA1 from update4.FreeBSD.org... failed.
 Fetching metadata signature for 9.1-BETA1 from update3.FreeBSD.org... failed.
 Fetching metadata signature for 9.1-BETA1 from update5.FreeBSD.org... failed.
 No mirrors remaining, giving up.

 Upon inspection of the code, it appears BETA1's ssl.pub cannot be found at
 any of the mirrors, and as such the process aborts.

 The release notes for RC1 specifically mention freebsd-update.

 How do I perform a correct update to RC1, and why is the freebsd-update flow
 failing me or not supported?

 Thanks!

I believe freebsd-update only works, to and from, on supported releases; this
would not include betas.

I built it from sources yesterday using the stable-supfile and csup. I've had
no issues using that method. It took a heck of a long time to compile world
though, ~2-3 hours in single user mode with -j5 option to make(1)

Re: FreeBSD 9.1-RC1 Available...

2012-08-25 Thread Thomas Mueller
from Peter Wemm pe...@wemm.org:

 As a data point.. if you're talking about stable/9, then that is
 still available via cvs/csup/cvsup as RELENG_9.

 If you track 9-stable, you're unaffected.

 I got two private emails about this.

 To be clear, yes, if you're tracking RELENG_9, you will get
 9.1-STABLE, and future 9.2 things just like before.

 All that is missing is the release management branch.

 But there will never be a RELENG_10* anything in cvs.

from Ken Menzel kenfree...@icarz.com:

 As I see no answered your real question. But I agree with them: yes you
 can still use csup or cvsup for releng_9 (stable 9).

 But as to your question, if you are switching to svn to try it out: In
 my experience I had to remove (rm -rf /usr/src) /usr/src or the old
 files remained. The checkout process did not update the existing files.
 But maybe I did something wrong.

 Tools other than cvs and cvsup are unaffected. You can still use
 portsnap or make fetch in /usr/ports etc.

 Ken

This should help get me started.

I could even attempt to cover both bases with

cd /usr
mv src src-csup
mkdir src

and be ready to go with svn.

But since I could run csup again if needed/desired, this might be overkill,
unless I want to compare the file formats.

It looks like it would be easier to keep track of revision number with svn than
with csup.

If svn is going to be the main tool for keeping up to date with source, then
subversion ought to become part of the base system.

I might some day want to try 10-current (HEAD) on a different partition, then
csup will not work at all to get the source.

connecting Sony PRS-T1 to FreeBSD

2012-08-25 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hi,

I'm thinking in acquiring an eBook reader, some Android based one, for
example the Sony PRS-T1, which has USB and Wifi; as well there are
methods described to 'root' the device, i.e. to get full access into the
Android Linux; someone here who has such a device and know if it
connects to FreeBSD via the USB Ethernet driver cdce(4)?

Thanks

 Perhaps it depends on the camera; or perhaps Canon puts all of the

 Another possibility is you are missing some info you aren't aware of.
 I'm curious to know if Canon stashes things in other places;
 I know nikon does similar to the way oly does as reported below;
 exiv2 -u -p a on a nikon raw file shows 112 nikon specific values.

Hi,

you need to specify the device, take a look at

# ls /dev/dsp*
/dev/dsp0.0/dev/dsp0.1/dev/dsp1.0/dev/dsp2.0/dev/dsp2.1

for example, i can send audio output to headphone jack:
# mplayer -zoom -x 1280 -y 720 -fs -ao oss:/dev/dsp1 -mixer /dev/mixer2
/path/to/file

Haven't tried skype on FreeBSD but there should be a device setting. I've
noticed that some machines seem to automatically switch, ie when I plug in
headphones to the headphone jack or a mic into a microphone jack it just
works. But other machines don't work automatically and I have to set the
device manually as above. A simple way, you can try setting each device to
see which one works. :)

Enter the command

# make configure

and deselect the PDF_MANUALS option. (Not tested!) This
should leave you with GNU info manuals if you keep that
option selected.

Then repeat the installation command.

 how can i do now?

I have the same port version here, and I can get to the
configuration menu. First of all, make sure you have done

# make rmconfig

And then you should see no error message when doing

# make configure

And in the menu, do _not_ select PDF_MANUALS. Having
examined the port's Makefile for the BROKEN variable
and other options that might trigger it, it seems
that the R port has significant problems regarding
its documentation.

 ++
 |   Options for R 2.15.1 |
 | ++ |
 | | [ ] ATLAS Use ATLAS instead of BLAS/LAPACK | |
 | | [X] GHOSTSCRIPT   [dev2]bitmap() graphics devices  | |
 | | [X] ICU Use ICU for collation in multibyte locales | |
 =  | | [X] INFO_MANUALS  GNU info manuals | |
 | | [X] JPEG  jpeg() graphics device   | |
 | | [ ] LETTER_PAPER  US Letter paper  | |
 | | [X] LIBR  R shared library and a dynamically-linked R  | |
 | | [X] PANGOCAIROcairo and pango graphics support | |
 | | [X] PCRE_PORT Use devel/pcre instead of the bundled PCRE   | |

Then you should be able to continue building (will possibly pull
gcc 4.6.3, this is the point where I stopped testing it myself.

If this doesn't work, again remove the configuration and re-enter
it by make configure: Then deselect INFO_MANUALS also. As I
said, the port's Makefile shows:

.if ${PORT_OPTIONS:MINFO_MANUALS}  ${PORT_OPTIONS:MDOCS}
ALL_TARGET+=info
INFO=   R-FAQ R-admin R-data R-exts R-intro R-lang
.endif

.if ${PORT_OPTIONS:MPDF_MANUALS}  ${PORT_OPTIONS:MDOCS}
BROKEN =The PDF_MANUALS option cannot be used, because\
print/texinfo is incompatible with print/teTeX-base
BUILD_DEPENDS +=pdftex:${PORTSDIR}/print/teTeX-base \
texi2dvi:${PORTSDIR}/print/texinfo
ALL_TARGET+=pdf
CONFIGURE_ENV +=INSTALL_INFO=${LOCALBASE}/bin/install-info \
MAKEINFO=${LOCALBASE}/bin/makeinfo
INSTALL_TARGET+=install-pdf
PLIST_SUB+= PDF_MANUAL=
.else
PLIST_SUB+= PDF_MANUAL=@comment
.endif
.endif # LIBR_SLAVEPORT
.endif # !LIBRMATH_SLAVEPORT

Keywords are MDOCS and MINFO_MANUALS here. So if the problem
might be inherited from other ports (mdoc related?), you could
do

# make rmconfig-recursive

followed by

# make config-recursive

to visit and carefully check all configuration screens that might
have an option that triggers the BROKEN mechanism, possibly
related to some info, texinfo, teTex or other dependency for the
documentation of R.

Finally, you could try to install R from package (via pkg_add -r).
The Makefile doesn't define RDEPS (runtime dependencies), so that
should be relatively easy. The LaTeX dependency seems to be a
build dependency (see Makefile excerpt above).

If you don't have success with any advice, maybe file a ports PR.
