Then, with further testing, I understood that the problem was with spaces in some strings but I didn't revert the first changes to the file so the commit come out dirty. I noticed it when looking at the commit in github, but it was too late Also I personally prefer to use spaces for indentation instead of tabs. The width of a tab is highly editor dependent. So what appears as nicely aligned in one editor may look totally misaligned in another. It usually looks misaligned on a diff as well (as the mail message shows). That's a tip I'll take note of! PS Ubuntu 13.10 64bit with GC 2.6.1 and git Hi Cristian, I had to experiment a bit before I could reproduce this. There is indeed a bug: autocompletion in the jobs field doesn't distinguish between vendor and customer jobs. So when you start typing a job name which auto completes to a customer job, a customer invoice will be created (for the customer that owns the job) instead of a vendor bill. This is a side effect of bug 625505 [1]. Geert [1] https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625505 Thanks Geert, [1] is surely the same problem I reported when it's clear that there is a difference between customer and vendor jobs. In fact, I was expecting only a unique job definition to which you can link customer (generally one) and vendors. I was simulating a scenario where you get commissioned by a customer for a job and you need materials from different vendors to accomplish the job. At the moment I can't see the advantages to have jobs defined separately for customer and vendors. Can you make some example so that I can better understand (and document) the principles behind the implementation? I've got most of the services already installed and tested, (although some less vital services have not been fully tested yet). My main question is when to migrate? One thing to keep in mind is that the new server will not support subversion (except in a read-only fashion so existing trac URLs will work). This means that once we migrate the 2.4 series will be dead, unless we upgrade the build server to handle 2.4 from git. Migration will require downtime, probably a good 4 hours (or more) in order to make sure data isn't changing as the migration occurs. I've pre-copied most of the data already so subsequent rsyncs should be faster. But then I'll also need to test everything to make sure it's working, and I'll have to migrate/upgrade mediawiki by hand. Frank changed the names of the language directories a couple of weeks from e.g. de_DE to just de, so that someone using e.g. de_CH would also get the German translation instead of the English doc. To avoid having to touch docs.phtml, or perhaps viewdoc.phtml, he created links from de_DE to de, it_IT to it, and ja_JP to ja. I didn’t make those links when I uploaded the 2.6 docs; I thought that it would work without them. I just made the links and the German and Italian pages seem to be loading correctly now. That is: my patch applies only to code generated by 2.0.10 or more recent. Until now GnuCash only required swig 2.0.10 if compiled with guile 2. I didn't consider the option of building gnucash with guile 1.8 and an older version of swig. There is a tiny chance that this patch is not needed either for guile 1.8. So in that case I can simply skip the patch application when building with guile 1.8. If it is mandatory in both cases, I may have to create two patches, one that applies to old swig generated code and one that applies to new swig generated code. I'll check and report back. It turns out the patch is only necessary for guile 2. I had already learned from the guile developers that the string handling changed radically between guile 1.8 and 2.0. This was one of the side effects. I have committed r23559 to make sure the swig patch is only applied when building with guile 2. In that situation we require swig 2.0.10 anyway. Or more precisely we should require it. I have also committed r23560 to improve the swig check to test for 2.0.10 when configure detects guile 2. So that should now be covered as well. So each application that wants to be visible in the new software centre needs some nice screen shots to show and a nice summary of what the application does. That's the very short explanation. More details about this can be found here [1] I have created a basic appdata file as required for the software centre, but there are two problems with it: 1. I'm not a good writer, so the summary is not good enough (too short). 2. I have referenced some screen shots from our website, but those are not accepted due to a wrong aspect ratio (the software centre wants images in the 16:9 ratio) So what can you do ? 1. look at the description that is currently in our appdata file [2] and make it better. The guidelines for a proper description can be found at [1]. 2. Make some nice screen shots of GnuCash in action and make them available somewhere for us to view. The best 3 will be used for the software centre. If there are many more submissions, a selection of the nicest screen shots will be used for a gallery on the GnuCash website. Re: Announcement: GnuCash Bounty Program GCBoP in June/July 2013

Feel free to send me any comments and questions that come up. Goals The goal of the GnuCash Bounty Program GCBoP is to make good use of some of our available donation money, specifically for the following aspects: * Get some issues fixed that have been a pain for many users but somehow were not interesting enough for developers previously * Attract new contributors by rewarding them for working on those issues * Stimulate current contributors to take on issues that remain open for too long * Experiment with this sort of bounty program in an Open Source project How does it work? The GCBoP program puts a bounty on the completion of any of the tasks that are listed on our GCBoP page [1], for any contributions received between June 1 and July 26, 2013. Some of the current developers will be act as Evaluators. As soon as some contributor sends in a patch that completes a task, one evaluator from our Pool of Evaluators will evaluate this contribution and decide whether a task is done so that the bounty is paid. See [1] for details. What are the eligible tasks? The following items from Bugzilla (see [1] for the clickable list) are tasks whose completion will be rewarded by a $200 bounty (or 160 EUR): * 514492 Win32: Crash when loading data file with invalid txn dates * 669964 Importing log file from a transaction that moves money between mutual funds creates a brokentransaction * 672595 If the data file is not saved when the new file wizard terminates, no confirmation is issued if you exit gnucash * 678103 Crash when creating new invoice * 691587 Crash while loading corrupted .gnucash/stylesheet-2.0 Criterion for choosing those tasks: They have severity CRITICAL and remained opened for quite some time already. Also, the following items from http://gnucash.uservoice.com/ are tasks whose completion will be rewarded by a $200 bounty (or 160 EUR): * Transaction Classifications (Bug 113772) * Add Undo Functionality (Bug 509267) * Make it easier for users to work with alternative/non-ISO/private currencies. (Bug 657215) * Add the ability to attached scanned images to invoices. (Bug 336843) * Type ahead search when entering the accounts to a transaction (Bug 545160) * More charting: Budget vs. Actual chart (Bug 700801) * Better Budgeting (Bug 700802) * Allow the database to be secured by way of a password (Bug 700803) * Manually change ordering of Transactions (Bug 700804) * Allow saving of Custom Reports without changing name, overwriting existing report (Bug 649284) Criterion for choosing those tasks: Those are the Top Ten feature requests by count of the user's votes. (Excluding the declined ones due to the immense structural changes they require.) And yes, they are not easy to do. That's the whole point of the GCBoP program. Questions? Comments? Feel free to send any comments and questions that come up to me privately or here on the list. I'll summarize and send out the final announcement on June 1st, when GCBoP will actually start. Ok, sorry; I should have asked before committing the changes. I've run a sed command and committed. Lesson learned for next time! Thanks Cristian Il 18/05/2013 22.07, Christian Stimming ha scritto: Hi Cristian, thanks for spotting this typo and fixing it. However, please be a bit more cautious about the types of files that you change in one commit: In cases like this where you fix or change the wording in a user-visible message, I'd like to ask you to make one commit that *only* changes the respective source file (.h, .c., .glade or similar). Please do not change all the po files in the same commit. Changing the po files (and even all of them) should be done very seldomly. Usually the translators will merge with a pot template anyway, and that pot is then generated from the very latest source anyway. Having all po files changed makes this single commit rather hard to read, i.e. when I want to know What is the real change in this commit, I have to search through all 30 files that have been changed but the real important change was only in assistant-csv-trans-import.glade. Hence, in cases like this, please make one commit that only changes the source file. The additional changes in the po files can either be ignored (and only your it.po gets updated by you), or sent in a separate second commit. Even the changes in the code comments can go into yet another commit with a commit message such as Fix typo in source comments, because that sort of commit message makes it clear that neither actual source code statements nor any user-visible messages have been changed. I hope you get the point: Changes can be of different level of importance, and those different levels should better not be mixed up into the same commit. Thanks of course for fixing the typo! Re: r22563 - gnucash-docs/trunk/guide/it_IT - Update Italian Translation.
Sorry Geert, it was not intentional. It happened because for Italian translation of guide and help I use a potfile based system. I generate a it.po file based on the English xml files (C folder), I update the it.po file and then generate the xml file in Italian using files in the C folder as template. When I've regenerated the Italian guide xml file, your changes were discarded. I've looked at your changes and I can see: - capitalized V changed in v for revisions (I can do this in my it.po file and regenerate the file) - Entity date: in my workflow that's picked up from the C folder and it is not picked up by the pot file generation: for me it's not a problem if it remains untraslated - My personal info in the authors section are added during the generation of the xml file based on what I've set in the po file as translator credits (you can see in the diff that my info in the copyright tag are moved some row down: that's where they are automatically placed in the po to xml generation). Are there other differences from the ones I listed? Re: r22563 - gnucash-docs/trunk/guide/it_IT - Update Italian Translation.
Thanks Geert for taking the time to (re)update the Italian files. When the new documentation release is complete, I will advertise it on Facebook and Google+ and if you haven't made it yet, I will write a news for the GnuCash website. Thanks for all your work! PS Did you manage to document the documentation release process? It happened because for Italian translation of guide and help I use a potfile based system. I generate a it.po file based on the English xml files (C folder), I update the it.po file and then generate the xml file in Italian using files in the C folder as template. When I've regenerated the Italian guide xml file, your changes were discarded. I've looked at your changes and I can see: - capitalized V changed in v for revisions (I can do this in my it.po file and regenerate the file) This was done to be consistent across translations. I forgot you were working from a pot file, otherwise I would have updated that one as well. - Entity date: in my workflow that's picked up from the C folder and it is not picked up by the pot file generation: for me it's not a problem if it remains untraslated Not too important. I just noticed this date was translated in the other languages, so translated it for Italian as well. I don't know if in Italian the month is normally captialized (like Novembre) or not (like novembre). I changed some capitalizations of dates in the revision list because I thought months are not capitalized by default in Italian. Those revision dates that consist only of a month and a year, I kept capitalized as the month is the first word in such sentence. - My personal info in the authors section are added during the generation of the xml file based on what I've set in the po file as translator credits (you can see in the diff that my info in the copyright tag are moved some row down: that's where they are automatically placed in the po to xml generation). I had moved your credits to the top, because I considered you the primary contributor to the documentation at this point and wanted to give you credit for it. But if that's complicated with the po file, it is ok as it is as well. Are there other differences from the ones I listed? The (non)capitalized dates I mentioned earlier, but other than that, no. I will let you know when I'm done. Thanks for waiting for me again! The patch for that bug will apply to 2.4 and trunk. Can you please give me advice on how to proceed? Do I have to apply it to trunk first and then to 2.4 or the other way around? How do I write the commit message for backporting? I don't remember having seen a reply to these questions. In general, changes should first be applied to trunk and then backported to 2.4. At least if the change is also relevant for 2.4. The commit message for trunk should contain a line with only BP on it to indicate this commit is meant to be backported. That helps to check later if all the relevant commits are really backported. It also alters the commit messages that are sent to gnucash-patches and gnucash-changes to begin with AUDIT. There used to be a release manager once that decided on whether a patch should be backported or not and the AUDIT/BP marks were meant as a request to backport. The marks were the release manager's clue to start evaluating a patch for backporting. This function no longer officially exists and nowadays each contributor backports his own patches. But the AUDIT/BP marks are still useful for other Developers to follow what gets backported and what not. The commit message on the commit that goes into the 2.4 branch essentially uses the same text with one small change: the line containing the BP mark is removed, and instead the revision number of the trunk commit is prepended to the message, surrounded with square brackets. An example will probably make it much clearer. The commit to trunk would have this message: My latest changes BP Let's assume this got committed in r22445 and now has to be backported. The message to use on the 2.4 branch will now be: [22445] My latest changes That's it. Re: GnuCash backup files
Thanks Geert for the explanation (clearer than my example!). In particular point 3 answer my question. BTW the problem was solved after the user read the section of the GnuCash guide about how backup files works. Thanks for the explanation! I've an Italian user reporting the deletion of a GnuCash file that he currently used with a filename set as a backup file. I was wondering if GnuCash could have deleted the file because its filename was composed with a date older than X days. I'll try with an example: let's say my financial data are managed in a file named data.20120101.gnucash saved last time on 2012.01.01. Let's say I have preferences set to remove backup files after 5 days. Now if I open the previous file on 2012.01.08 (more than five days later) could my file be deleted by GnuCash? And what if the same file with the same name was saved last time less than five days before the reopening? Cristian, Your example is not completely clear to me, I'm afraid. Can you give more details about the filenames (you talk of opening a backup file, but don't specify what it is called exactly for example). In general (from reading the code) I see there are a lot of rigorous checks in the old file cleanup code. Let's take datafile example.20120101.gnucash and backup file example.20120101.20120930225014.gnucash as example files below: 1. any file that doesn't end in .LCK, .xac, .gnucash or .log are never touched. 2. any file that does not begin with the name of the opened file is skipped. So if you open the datafile, any file that doesn't start with example.20120101.gnucash will be skipped. Our backup file begins with this string, so it's still a candiate for deletion. If on the other hand you open the backup file, the normal data file will be skipped, because it doesn't start with example.20120101.20120930225014.gnucash 3. The opened file itself is skipped, so if you open the data file, that file itself will not be deleted. If you open the backup file, the backup file won't be deleted. 4. Files ending in .LCK get a special treatment (only the active lockfile is kept), but that's not relevant to your questions. 5. At this point possible candidates to be deleted should a. start with the open file's name b. end in .log, .gnucash, or .xac The next check now is whether there are a dot and 14 digits right before the extension. That's the timestamp gnucash adds to the backup and log files. If this patterns isn't found, the file is skipped. So if you open the data file, the backup file above still matches all criteria up until now. 6. Finally the code checks if the file is older than the retention time defined in the preferences. This doesn't use the timestamp in the filename, but the file's actual modified time. This is so both in current 2.4 branch as in trunk. While talking about this feature, when GnuCash checks for the deletion of backup files? every time you start it? Yes.
