Re: [GNC-dev] [GNC] Gnucash-Intel-3.1-2.dmg

2018-05-01 Thread Dave H
Hi John,

Have just installed 3.1.2 from the dmg and I usually double-click on both
the Gnucash.app and the FinanceQuote Update.app to trigger the security
warning and say open anyway before I copy them to the Application folder
replacing the previous version. When I double click on FinanceQuote
Update.app I'm getting an error - "The variable gnc_fq_update is not
defined." - is this something to worry about or is it just because I'm not
running it correctly ?

Cheers Dave H.

oh if I could have an example that would be great!
Template transactions are very similar to normal ones in the file, the
difference is where they are located.
If you search the file till you see the tag gnc:template-transactions
  then that's where they begin.
First there will be a list of some template accounts and then after that

According to Ngewi release 1.5.5 completely ignores scheduled
transactions, which also matches my experience. Since I anticipate
using the Android version mainly to enter day to day cash and bank
transactions, I think 1.5.5 could work for me if it were easier to
navigate. I could live without stocks or scheduled transactions in the
Android version. In fact, I could even live without direct access to
  income and expense accounts.

Yes, I will make modifications to the program so that it first tries to
  parse the SXs.
But if it fails, it will just revert to 1.5.5 behaviour and ignore
  scheduled transactions completely.
I feel this will be a better balance.

I noticed in release 1.5.5 that the split transaction display was
confusing because the 'goes intos' plus the 'comes out ofs' do not add
up to zero. they were identical from the perspective of income and
expense accounts, which is fine if shown correctly. I personally think
that the source register that the split transaction is viewed from
should not matter at all. I wish the regular Gnucash worked that way. I

 stuck in some state.
But the database upgrade is in a one transaction, which means it either
succeeds or fails (and the old data is kept in tact).
Can you tell me what device you're using and what Android version?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the files I'm using (my normal GnuCash
compressed xml files) import into version 1.5.5 fine with one little quirk
- the Scheduled Transactions never show up - when I go to Scheduled

have them set to be created 60 days in advance to give me an idea of my

Re: GnuCash XML sched-xaction split amount formatting

2015-04-29 Thread Dave H
Ngewi,

Can you provide a Preference for the Locale which would allow the user to
select either the Locale in use on the Phone (the default) or another
Locale of their choosing if they happen to be using a different Locale on
their PC - perhaps with an explanation that this affects only Scheduled
Txns ?

Cheers Dave H.

 Hi Geert,
Thanks for that info. That puts us in a tight spot. Now GncA could either:
 - skip scheduled transactions completely (not desirable)
 - parse the wrong amount and let the user edit it later (I am less inclined
 to do this) or
 - fail the import completely (which is what happens now and will make the
import feature less-than-useful for many) .

One solution that comes to mind though, if I could reliably know how many
decimal places are included in the amount, then I can parse it irrespective
 of the separator.
Does GnuCash always use 2 decimal places, or does this depend on the
 currency, or something else?

But then that also leaves the issue of GnuCash choking on XML files
exported by GncA because we cannot predict what locale the user will be
 using.
Best guess will be to use the mobile device locale and hope that the user
has the same setting on the desktop!

  Hi Ngewi,

Unfortunately you hit one of GnuCash's dark corners here. The SX amount
formula is stored in gnucash in the locale that is active at that time.
This has been a poor design decision (more like on oversight probably) at
  the time.

It gets worse if you change locales afterwards because gnucash doesn't
store the locale information itself with the formula and hence can't
convert the stored formulas to the new locale, resulting in errors when
these formulas have to be parsed.

This has been reported as a bug [1] which hasn't been fixed yet so far.

I'm not sure what you can do on the gnucash-on-android side to properly
handle this if gnucash itself even doesn't.

David,

Go to www.gnucash.org and scroll down about half a page to the Gnucash for
Android section - it's just off the bottom of the screen on my monitor.
Click on the Info and Development link which will take you to the README
for the app at
https://github.com/codinguser/gnucash-android/blob/master/README.md. If
you click on one of the blog links or just go to http://www.codinguser.com/
for the blog home page you will be able to read some of the blog postings
which will give you more of a feel for the app and how to use it. There is
also an Android Import Guide from 2014 on the blog home page -
http://www.codinguser.com/2014/03/gnucash-android-account-import-guide/

I seem to recall that the version prior to this latest beta will also read
my gnucash xml file directly and I was able to just import that the last
time I played around with the app. I won't be upgrading to this latest
beta for a week or so as I have some transactions I need to export from my
phone and import into gnucash proper on my desktop.

  Hello everyone,
We are kinda feature complete for the 1.6.0 release and would like to
 enter
the testing phase. I am releasing first to the developer mailing list,
 then
to the beta group and then a rolling release to the general public. Of
course while fixing any issues that arise in-between the different
 phases.

Attached to this email is a properly signed apk file which you can
 install
on your device. You can just download the attachment and install or build
your own from the sources in the develop branch (very easy to do with
  Android studio).

This is a pre-beta release so please **BACK UP YOUR DATA** before
  installing it.

Notable highlights in this release include:
  - Improved recurrence options for scheduled transactions
  - Basic reports generation (with bar, pie and line charts)
  - Scheduled export to SD Card, DropBox or Google Drive
  - Improved creation of backups and restoring of backups
  - Improved reliability of account imports and db migrations
  - Numerous bug fixes and improvements

I would like to thank Yongxin Wang and Oleksandr Tyshkovets for
  contributing significantly to this release.

This release also adds automatic logging of crashes and errors to
Crashlytics which helps detect errors and improve the stability of the
 app.
This logging is enabled by default in pre-release builds but will be
 turned
off in production releases (with an option to enable it later).

Also, GnuCash Android now produces GnuCash XML which can be read by
 GnuCash
on the desktop (YAAAY!!) - There is a new XML export UI option and also
 as
  backup format .gnca

*NOTE: *please remember that this is NOT a two-way synchronization*.*
However, the compatibility now enables you to start working on a file on
GnuCash desktop, open it in the mobile app, edit and save (to DropBox
 etc)
and then resume editing on the desktop. Each time you save, a new file is
created but the workflow is possible. GnuCash Android also registers
 itself
  to open .gnucash files.

Accounts, transactions and scheduled transactions are the only features
supported at the moment. If your desktop file contains more features
(budgets, customers etc), these will be ignored completely.

All the same, I am excited that we have arrived this point and continue
 to
look forward to new features and further integration with GnuCash
 desktop!

So please try out this pre-release and tell me what you think.
  Cheers,
  Ngewi

P.S. Now is the time to send in translation for strings, or create a new
one if your language is not yet supported. Email me if you want to help
 but
  are unsure how to.

It could well be that GnuCash 2.6.4-2 doesn't exhibit the hang-on-exit
problem on WinXP. I don't remember if I've tested that. It does hang
 reliably on Win7 and 8.
I can test on other Win versions tomorrow.

What I'm unsure about is the blanket not working on Win which is
 clearly too broad.

If you (not any individual) wanted to screw acceptance of gnc then the
co-incidence of POTM and actually, it doesn't work on Windows is getting
on for perfect storm stuff in non-acceptance terms :(
  Wm,

Don't waste your time. I can replicate the problem and I'm actively
working on it (and have been for over a month). That it's a wide-spread
problem is amply attested by the 8 duplicate bug reports we've closed on
 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=738477.

No one says it doesn't work on Windows. We say 2.6.4 has some
problems on Windows, Windows users should use 2.6.3. I'd think the impact
on acceptance is far worse when users download 2.6.4 and it's broken.

As for POTM, meh. We're on that list two or three times a year, and
AFAICT it makes no appreciable difference to download rates. I don't have
access to the stats from www.gnucash.org so I don't know if there's any
 affect there.

fixes and new features that have been incorporated into the 2.6.x
releases, and I feel that now I can temporarily live with the chart
rendering problem while testing other issues, so I am now starting to do
that. I am finding that 2.6.4 is noticeably nicer than 2.4.13. When I
suggested that other venturesome Windows users might try it, it was
intended to be taken in that context of testing other features.

I have also done some limited testing in a couple of flavors of Linux
and seen good results, but I have not been able to get my network set up
properly to move copies of files between machines easily.

That is mostly a problem of getting the various machines to talk to each
other, which has just resisted all my efforts to date. It is supposed
to be very straightforward setups on both the Windows 7 machines and the
Ubuntu, Debian, or even PC-BSD machines, but I keep hitting walls. I
cannot even get the Windows 7 homegroup feature to work between the two
Windows 7 machines. I am about ready to substitute a different router.
I feel much better now after getting that rant out.

Hi again Ngewi,

No luck with importing accounts and transactions. I've saved my normal
GnuCash file as uncompressed by removing the Compress Files check under
the General Preferences and saving it as xxx.gnucash. I've then used
Dropbox to upload and download it to a number of Android devices running
different versions of android. Then I've used the app and selected Import
GnuCash Accounts and the Dropbox option, selected the uncompressed file and
it's pretty much straight away displayed the an error occurred
importing... error message :-(

Cheers Dave H.

Hi Ngewi,

Yes I'll try that, I already marked it as a favourite in DropBox and let it
download fully to try an rule out any caching issues. I'll use the file

result.

can exclude the external service as the problem. Sometimes (not often),
when import fails almost immediately, the app providing the file could be
an issue. (downloading issues, Caching, etc)

Re: Announcing GnuCash Android v1.4.0-beta1

2014-07-26 Thread Dave H
Hi Ngewi,

Thanks for your work on bringing this app to Android.

I've been looking for the option to import the transactions from my
existing GnuCash file and cannot seem to find it. The only option I see is
Import GnuCash Accounts under Account Preferences - perhaps I'm missing
something here - any pointers ?

I'm using V.1.4.0-beta2 version of the app you posted earlier today on a
variety of android devices - Samsung Galaxy Tab running Android 2.6.35.7,
ASUS Transformer TF101 tablet running Android 4.0.3 and a Samsung Galaxy
Note 3 running Android 4.4.2 and don't seem to have an option to import
transactions anywhere ?

I've been able to import the account tree after a bit of a false start. I
forgot I had to export the account tree in xml format and exported the csv
format file first time around :-( Importing it on android just gives a
fairly unspecific error message - an error occurred importing the GnuCash
accounts. Perhaps you could change the Import GnuCash Accounts to
something like Import GnuCash Accounts (XML only) or something similar as
a reminder to those of us that are doing this rarely?

Cheers Dave H.

 *v1.4.0-beta1*.
I would like your help for testing this release to weed out any bugs before
 the wider release.

Attached is a properly signed APK which you can easily install on your
 Android device.

*NOTE: This is a beta release, so BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE INSTALLING*.

The main highlights of this release are:

 - Multiple splits per transaction (including an all-new split editor)
 - Fixed computation of account balances (and corresponding movements caused
 by splits)
 - New: Importing of transactions from GnuCash XML file (not just accounts
 like before).
 - Use of accounting labels (instead of generic CREDIT/DEBIT) for
 transaction type

I would especially like to hear about your experiences on the following:

 - Upgrade expericnce: should be seamless. But if you experience any loss of
 data, please let me know

 - Exporting and importing into GnuCash desktop with QIF and OFX.

 - UX for creating and deleting transactions/splits

 - Any thing else which you notice

Even if you're not regularly using the Android app, if you have an Android
device I would still appreciate your feedback.

 Thanks a lot in advance.

 Cheers,
 Ngewi F.

P.S. After a few days on this list, I will release to the Play Store beta

No, you're not missing anything. The Import GnuCash Accounts feature just
 now handles the files better.

Just import accounts as usual and the transactions will come along.

You're right. I will look to make it clearer that XML is the supported
format for import. And maybe provide a more descriptive message when
 something goes wrong.

 Cheers Dave H.

Once you have it mounted you should be able to run GnuCash on Ubuntu and
then do a file open and browse to the network drive I would think ?
