A point that's been glossed over: if you've only created two Gnucash files, why
has the first one dropped off the previous files list? I think that the default
for that menu is four. That means your first file should still be there. Or
have you been opening other files as well (like maybe backups)?

You do not mention which OS you are using. If it is Windows or Linux you can
search for the data file name and then double click on the file name. I am not
sure about Mac OS.

Re: [GNC] data file

2018-05-25 Thread Adrien Monteleone
How are you searching?

Windows Vista and more modern editions include advanced search operators.

Open a file manager window and navigate to the C:\ drive. (or the root of
whatever drive you think the file is on)

In the search bar type:

ext:.gnucash

This will give you all files on that drive with the .gnucash extension.

You can also use the search drop down to further restrict by date and file size.

You can include standard operators such as NOT,AND,-,+ as well as do explicit
and phrase searches using “” to wrap your term(s).

You could use NOT or - to exclude log files if desired, but more than likely,
if you find those, you’ll find your data file since they are usually stored
together.

Adrien

[GNC] mew user; few minor issues

2018-05-25 Thread Tony Jones
Hi

New user here.I just switched from Quicken as a result of a)
Capital One issues b) their change to the yearly subscription model.
I had a few issues setting up the switch, but once I'd pruned things
I'm pretty happy now. Online access to my bank works fairly well. I
have to manually import from Capital One. Still, a years worth of
this is minor compared to a single beat-head-against-keyboard attempt
to deal with Quicken Support.

So BIG THANKS to all the developers of this product.

A few issues:

1) When I go to online->get-transactions it prompts me that my bank
has also sent balance info and do I want to import it. I always say
yes, but it never imports it. When I reconcile, my ending balance is
not correct (usually == start) and I have to manually do
online->get-balance to fix it.

2) Is there any way to not have it auto prompt for reconcile after an
online->get-transactions? I tend to pre-enter transactions, so the
matcher flags these as needing attention. So I usually have to say
"no" to the question of do I want to reconcile. It would be nice if
I could just default to always having to manually reconcile and not be
prompted.

3) The matcher for newly downloaded transactions is odd, I'm not sure
it always gets things right. I get a weird matches of ignore, U, U+R
and usually have to manually intervene.

4) The online password entry dialog needs to always stay on the
foreground above it's parent dialog, This is not the case right now
and it can go behind it's parent. Usually I end up blanking the
desktop and then restoring GNUCash and it will come back.

Thanks again

Tony

The reason this is done is to Freeze the state of the tax table at
the time the invoice was posted. For example, let's say that the tax
rate changes between 2017 and 2018. Generally you don't create a new
tax table, you just modify the existing one. But since invoice values
(and tax amounts) are computed on the fly, you need to know what the
2017 tax rate was if you want to go back and view a 2017 invoice in
2018.

So to solve this problem we make an invisible backup copy of the tax
table when you post the invoice.

When you unpost the invoice you have a choice to reset the tax table or
not. If you reset it, then it will change from the backup to the
current version of the tax table. However, if you do NOT reset it, then
it will remain pointing to the backup version. This was done because
you may need to make a correction to an older invoice but not want the
tax values to change to the current version.

Pretty much, once you post an invoice, that tax table can no longer be
deleted. Period. There will always be the invisible children in the
database. I don't think those children will get purged, even if their
refcount goes to 0.

Looks like the uninstall/install procedure in gnucash-3.1-2.setup.exe left the
old 2.6 version of zlib1.dll in place.

Try uninstalling GnuCash from Control Panel, then deleting C:\Program Files

Please Advise,

Actually, no, that bug is about Windows.

To enable input methods on Macs add the line
  GTK_IM_MODULE_FILE={GNC_HOME}/etc/gtk-3.0/gtk.immodules
to Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gnucash/environment

Re: [GNC] data file

2018-05-25 Thread D via gnucash-user
A point that's been glossed over: if you've only created two Gnucash files, why
has the first one dropped off the previous files list? I think that the default
for that menu is four. That means your first file should still be there. Or
have you been opening other files as well (like maybe backups)?

You do not mention which OS you are using. If it is Windows or Linux you can
search for the data file name and then double click on the file name. I am not
sure about Mac OS.

Re: [GNC] Reconciliation

2018-05-25 Thread Bill McAninch
Thanks David. I was on v31, Windows 10. I have reinstalled v2.6 and
performed the reconciliation without issues. I've little experience with
Linux but when I get some time I'll install Linus Mint and gnucash 3.1 to
see how I like it.

BTW I also noticed in v3.1 that after unsuccessfully checking and
unchecking boxes three or four times, I was dumped back to the transaction
screen.

Re: [GNC] Reconciliation

2018-05-25 Thread DaveC49
Bill,

This is not the case for GnuCash v3.1 on Linux Mint 18.3. You can readily
check and uncheck the boxes. The only hassle I have had is that by default
the credit and debit entries are not ordered by date but by reconcile status
and when you check a box, it is automatically placed at the end of the list,
which can be off the page.

I also personally don't like that items are matched and preselected as
reconciled but with Ctrl-A and unreconcile transactions from the right click
menu to undo the automatic selection, I can live with that.

Clicking on the date header for the table will order the contents by date
rather than the status which is much more useful for checking off against a
date ordered statement. As Dennis suggested your GnuCash version Number and
OS details may be useful.
