Re: [GNC] Fwd: The two modules

2018-06-21 Thread Stephen M. Butler
Christopher

Going to the latest version is stymied until I hear back from one of the
developers on what went wrong with make.

I'm new to using GnuCash so have not delved into the Foreign currency or
stocks.

So, let's build a COA together and see what happens (on paper):

100 - Asset
110 -   " : Bank1
112 -   " :    "  :Checking
114 -   " :    "  : Savings
116 -   " :    "  : Bonds
120 -   " : Bank2
130 -   " : ForeignBank   (GBP currency)
140 -   " : Broker
142 -   " :    "  : Cash
144 -   " :    "  : Stock
150 -   " : House

200 - Liability
220 -   " : Bank2
222 -   " :   "  : Loan
224 -   " :   "  : Creditcard

300 - Equity

400 - Income

500 - Expense

We may fill in the above further as we work along.  So, our initial
transaction will be to setup our initial balances:
[Normally we would setup somewhat prior to the above purchases and buy
things out of the checking account -- but, we just installed the
software and are starting in the middle.]

Transaction 001
    114 Debit $100
    116 Debit $2000
    120 Debit $500
130 Debit GBP 500  (equivalent to $625 at time of purchase)
    142 Debit $2000
    144 Debit $4000 (20 units @ $200)
    222 Credit $9000
    224 Credit $500
300 Debit $275   [Note, we are below water here.  Equity should be a
credit account and we are in the hole.]

At this point I went to the house accountant and asked about unrealized
gain and how to book it.  She said you don't.  Not until there is an
event in which it is sold or traded.  For tomorrow GBP might drop back
to parity, the stock might crash, and the housing market could implode.

So, we may need input from others who might have a different viewpoint.

Please be sure to include gnucash-user@gnucash.org in all communications by
using reply All or whatever works best in your mail client.

I personally installed release 2.6.17 from GetDeb into Ubuntu 16.04 Gnome
on an older laptop and it has worked as well as I could expect with only 2
Gig of Ram. However, I have a very large data file and I only use
AlphaVantage to update stock prices on a different machine so I am not sure
about AqBanking. Perhaps others can share their experience with GnuCash on
Ubuntu.

While GnuCash 3.2 will be released very soon for Windows and OS X, it will
take a while to get to Ubuntu, unless you are willing to compile it
yourself. Personally, I am not in a hurry.

You did not say whether you are using the release of GnuCash that is found
in the software offered by Ubuntu or a newer release from Get Deb or yet
another package. Please name the release that you are using and whether
you also installed all the supplemental packages required for Aqbanking.
See the FAQ on the website for more information.

You will almost always see that error messeage when reopening a file after
a crash. Usually you choose open anyway unless you think that the file is
open on a different computer.

As for the cause of the crash, it is necessary to know which version that
you have before someone here can suggest what to try next.

Good luck.

Are all of the characters in regular English characters (i.e. a-z,
A-Z, and 0-9)?
Are you absolutely sure that the is in fact random? How many
trials did you run? Are all of *those* characters in the regular English
character set?
Is the server path mapped to a drive with net use? Have you tried that?

I discovered today why this is a problem on Gnucash 3.x and not on 2.6.x.
While Bob already committed a fix to prevent this from happening again, he did
not add a cure for existing bad WindowPosition values. I have just committed
that part so it should no longer happen from gnucash 3.2 onwards.

[GNC] Can't save a file to redirected folder.

2018-06-21 Thread RedFishGnuFish
Admittedly, I'm brand new to GnuCash but I think this is a real issue.

I'm using GnuCash 3.1 on Win 7. My windows Desktop directory is redirected
to a 2008 Server on my home network.

I create a new project and try to save it.
1) I first create a folder (Accounting) on my Desktop which succeeds.

2) I enter that folder Accounting

3) I try to save fool.gnucash

Note, the network path looks something like:
\\servername\Share\Users\\Accounting\foo.gnucash

I get the error:

You attempted to save in

or a subdirectory theerof. This is not allowed as GnuCash reservers that
directory for internal use.

Please try again in a different directory.

I'ts ironic that the only reason I'm upgrading from Quicken 2003 is it
doesn't seem to handle network path names.

Re: [GNC] Is there a Save As command line option

2018-06-21 Thread DaveC49
Steve,

One possibility is to use synchronized data bases using master-slave
replication. I know this works with MySQL and it is a bit of a pain to set
up but once it is going it is generally pretty good. Also a bit of a pain to
restart if the replication gets out of sync. I have been meaning to setup
scripts to do that but haven't yet got around to it. I keep several database
on my laptop and desktop in sync automatically. Not sure about PostGRES or
sqlite3 replication capability.

Also if you have Dropbox or similar access you can store the GnuCash files
in a Dropbox and access it from multiple devices.
